Vintage Mac Collector

Jeremy Mehrle has turned the basement of his suburban St. Louis home into one of the coolest private computer museums you will ever see. He has 74 vintage Apple Macintosh computers impeccably displayed. All of them are fully-functional so you can see what the old operating systems were like. Some of the highlights of his collection are an Apple Lisa, a 20th Anniversary Macintosh, and a next computer. This is an amazing collection — amazing not for its size, but the loving care Jeremy took in displaying these machines. Also thanks to Walkie Talkie USA for providing the great Bowiesque soundtrack for this video. UPDATE! Since I posted this in February 2007, Jeremy has gotten a lot more press, including from CNN.com and the AP. I’m proud that my little project here got to scoop these bigger news organizations.

The Amazing Story Of The Barbie Doll

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the more fascinating toys of all-time would have to be the Barbie doll. And with little wonder since she has been with us for over 45 years. Barbie is the biggest selling doll in toy history, and has given countless hours of fun to many girls from around the world. That brings a good question to mind; How did the Barbie doll come about?

The Barbie doll history is a good story. You really have to go all the way back to the start of Mattel in order to completely understand her beginnings. In 1938, Mattel was formed by two life long friends, Harold Matson (Mat), and Elliot Handler (El). Did you know that when Mattel was originally formed, they were not a toy maker? In fact, Mattel began as a picture frame manufacturer. Later, they began to make doll furniture.

Elliot Handler was married and had a daughter, Barbara, that enjoyed playing with dolls, just like all little girls. Instead of baby dolls, Barbara liked playing with adult dolls, but there were really no dolls like that on the market. On an impromptu visit to Europe one day, Mrs. Handler found a German doll named ‘Lilli’ in a store. The funny thing was, this wasn’t even marketed as a doll. It was more of a joke type gift for men.

When Mrs. Handler returned back home, Lilli was a hit with Barbara. That gave Mattel an idea. They bought the marketing rights to Lilli and changed her name to Barbie, named after their daughter Barbara of course. As they say, the rest is history. Barbie was introduced to the world at the New York International Toy Fair in March, 1959. Actually, March 9, 1959 is Barbie’s official birthdate.

Barbie was an instant hit, and spread throughout the U.S. during that year. It seemed that Barbie was a bit lonely though, so the next year, Ken was introduced. Did you know that Ken was named after the Handler’s son, Kenneth?

Barbie was originally dressed in a black and white striped swimsuit. You even had the option of buying her with brown hair or blonde hair. Of course, Barbies dress was later made available in many different styles and selections. Every conceivable outfit was offered. Barbies dress was patterned after the Paris designer fashion shows.

Barbie has been made into everything from a college student to a president over the years. Every type of accessory has been brought out including, cars, houses, and pets. Barbie has also been an Olympian and even a mermaid. The Barbie doll history is an amazing story. How long can she continue to be popular? That’s anyones guess, but Barbie is still going strong nearly 50 years later, so I wouldn’t doubt she still has many more years to come.

What is the Best CB Radio Antenna That I Should Buy?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I have been driving a tractor trailer for about 10+ years. I am a member to many CB Radio Forums, also a lot of Truck Driver Forums.

I see and get this question all the time, so I thought I would try and answer it here.

You made it through truck driving school, now you need a CB Radio? OK, first off we need to do some research on CB Radios. DO you want a 10 meter radio? Or do you want a standard 11 meter CB Radio? Well it is going to have to be the latter of the two. Because unless you are a Ham Radio operator licensed through the FCC, then it is illegal to own a 10 meter radio.

CB Radio operators are only allowed to talk on the 11 meter band.

There are 40 channels in the 11 meter band, no CB Channels go below channel 1- 26.965 or above channel 40- 27.405. Anywhere in between you are allowed to operate as long as your CB Radio has not been “worked on”, we will get into this later. There are several different kinds of CB Radio’s to choose from that are legal in the US.

Cobra 25 LTD, 29 LTD, 148 GTL, 19 DX, 25 NW, 25 WXNW, 29 NW, 29 WXNW

Texas Ranger 696, 121,966

Uniden PRO 538 with weather, 510 XL, PC 68 XL, PC 68 LTW, PC 78 XL, PC 78 LTW, PC 78 Elite

Galaxy 949 and the Galaxy 959

These listed here are the basic legal radios allowed to be used in the USA today without having to have a Amature radio license. They are allowed to be used as long as no modifications have been made to them such as a “Peak and Tune” where the power has been turned up on the radio. From the factory these radio’s are preset at 4 watts of power, which is legal. Tuned properly they will go up to about 35 watts, but again this is not allowed by the FCC.

But most truckers go to the nearest “cb shop” and pay $50.00 to $100.00 to have a “Connex Board” and a “peak and tune” done to their radios. The “Connex Board” is a echo feature added to the inside of the radio, so as to distort (echo) the voice it also adds a talk back feature so the operator can hear themselves through an external speaker.

Most drivers I know usually buy a decent radio ($150.00) then they buy a cheap antenna to go with it. Well this won’t work, your antenna is 95% of your cb outfit. I recommend any Wilson antenna, especially a Wilson 2000 or Wilson 5000. These range in price from $50.00 to $100.00 and that is usually installed. Yes, have it installed by a tech so that they can set your SWR for your antenna. SWR- Standing Wave Ratio this is what makes your radio talk. If you have a SWR of above a 3 or more it will burn your radio up. The tech will use a SWR meter connected to your coax and antenna to check it’s SWR reading. If it is to high they will cut some of the antenna whip off 1/8″ increments, until a satisfactory SWR is reached. If you do not want to spend a lot on an antenna at least buy one that is tunable.

The coax is another big part of the radios performance. Which would be caught by a good tech when they were installing your “new” antenna. But if you are already using the radio and you notice it drops in performance, it will either usually be the SWR or the coax. Truck stops sell precut lengths of coax, usually you will need a 18′ piece to replace what is bad runs about $25.00, I recommend the gray or clear coax. If you are just replacing the coax you can do this yourself, unless you want the SWR checked.

I hope maybe this has shed some light on what to buy.

Be safe out there.

How to Bring About Discipline in Your Child

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Every now and then parents face this dilemma of having to discipline their child. This discipline is what makes the child into fine young individuals later on in life.

However that takes an enormous amount of patience and perseverance on the parents part to get the child disciplined. Children by nature are free spirits and would want to have all sorts of freedom. You as a parent also do not want to restrict them into binding rules.

There ware always two sides to the coin so total restriction will not be very good for them as well total freedom. There is fine balance between the two that you need to achieve.

The golden rule as a parent for you is to first think about what kind of habits are good for the child and what are not. Then make sure that initially you observe the kids for the first few days and understand the nature of the child. Then also understand as to what are his behavioral tendencies. Make sure you understand how well he or she responds to scolding and appreciation.

Then with all this things in mind you need to develop a long term discipline plan for the kid. For each type of indiscipline you need to observe where he is going wrong. Then approach slowly each problem and try to correct it. For thing that he becomes obstinate about make sure that you have appropriate response. At the outset never indulge into a shouting match with the child. That give and impression to the kid that he is powerful and you are powerless.

Try to be calm in any give situation. Be firm when telling your child that his behavior is not acceptable. Never leave it at that statement but try to explain to him why the behavior is not acceptable. Be very cold and matter of fact when telling him that. He will understand that you mean business. Hopefully after a few such conversations he will start to relate to what you are saying. If he does not understand even then give mild forms punishment but never go extreme. Most kids start behaving at that time. If not, then you need to take help of a child psychologist for appropriate treatments and therapy.

Christmas Gifts For Teachers – A Gift of Gratifying Memories

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Christmas gifts for teachers, teaches children the art of giving. The question is; where do you find thoughtful gift ideas for the educator of your child? In fine-tuning that question, you may ask, ‘what holiday gifts would be enjoyable for a teacher to receive?’

It is important to the child’s self-esteem; they have unique Christmas gifts for an important person in their life. Unique simply means; their present needs to differ from the other twenty-nine gifts in the room. Thoughtful gift ideas need not be difficult, but simple.

Children want their Christmas gifts for teachers to be remembered for years to come. In a blog I read a couple months ago, a teacher explained that a movie gift basket was the best present she had ever received from a child. Upon the last day of school, a child had given her the refreshing break she needed and the gift remained in her memory, as one of the finest.

Movie gift baskets are entertaining any time of the year. Letting go, relaxing and curling up on a cushy sofa with a favorite movie, popcorn and sweet treats, tells us why the student’s gift stood out among the rest. The teacher had retained a gratifying memory.

Festive and delectable holiday food gifts are appropriate Christmas gifts for teachers:

cheerful Christmas gift baskets filled with gourmet coffees cocoas, teas, chocolate gifts, mints, butter cookies, cheeses, crackers and the like will fill her memories with festive holiday cheer.

festive gift bags overflowing with holiday goodies, will be used year after year to bring back the memories of your child’s thoughtfulness.

towering treats in gift boxes, candy baskets and sweet baskets create delicious and festive moments to be enjoyed and shared throughout the holiday season.

Christmas gifts for teachers are simple thoughtful gift ideas, put to good use, when you think about it. Baskets, festive bags, tins and stackable towers are all reusable. The memory of a child and a gift lives from season to season.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P312D4 Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The hard hitting Rockford Fosgate stands as one of the most dependable subwoofer available in the car audio world. This particular model has been around for many years, yet in those years it has outclassed many of its competition. Both stylish and high-performing, the Punch Stage 3 Series P312D4 subwoofer is one of the most popular subwoofers to be sold today. What’s really good about the Rockford Fosgate P312D4 is its incredibly low price ($35). This is due to the aging unit, but don’t worry, you’ll be highly impressed by this heart-stopping bass machine.

The 12″ P312D4 subwoofer is capable of handling 1000 watts maximum power and 500 watts of continuous RMS power. This means surprisingly high-volume, high-power, and high-bass-capable of punching out the bass that you’ve always wanted. The P312D4 features the standard polypropylene cone woofer but is injection molded for extra durability and toughness. The entire cone structure features a wide roll foam surround, capable of flexible cone movement while maintaining its linearity and consistency.

The Rockford Fosgate P312D4 is also a reversible subwoofer, capable of being mounted with the massive magnet structure inside or outside the enclosure, providing extra space in the enclosure. In addition, the P312D4 features 2.5″ aluminum dual 4 ohms voice coil, 8-gauge push terminals, 102oz. (6.375 lbs.) double stacked magnet, 20-200 Hz frequency response, and stitched tinsel leads/spider to eliminate the risk of shorting out. Rockford Fosgate has also tested the P312D4 with their own Klippel DA1 analyzer that truly tests this Punch Stage 3 subwoofer. They’ve measured its ability to perform and be stressed under various demands.

The point is, the Rockford Fosgate P312D4 is an excellent subwoofer that is capable of performing well in virtually any application. In addition, the subwoofer does not require a lot of space, measuring only at 0.65 – 2.00 cubic feet per enclosure.
