Radio based phones that can send and receive voice signals have become the rage in the world of wireless communication. While they are similar to mobile phones, the condition with such radio phones is that you can either receive or send voice signals at a given time.

The 2 way radios popularly known as walkie-talkie have a push- to- talk or (Press to Transmit) button to activate the transmitter. There radios can be classified into 2 categories: the first type operates on Family Radio Service (FRS) and the second operates on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). For personal use, FRS radios are used and they are inexpensive as compared to GMRS. If weather permits, they can transmit signals within a maximum range of 2 miles. GMRS radios, on the other hand are more expensive, but have a higher connectivity range and can transmit signals to a maximum distance of 10 miles.

These radios come with several features. These features include the use of private code to protect the system from being caught by any other radio users, system of reduced eavesdropping and different ways of getting call alerts if a new message is on its way. Some highly efficient radios are endowed with features like barometer, thermometer, digital compass, AM/FM radio and GPS navigation unit.

These radios help the user to stay connected wirelessly. Not only that, they are cost effective too. Another benefit of 2 way radios is that they are very user-friendly. To add to that, their batteries are very durable and can be carried anywhere quite easily. Those parents who cannot afford costly mobile phones for their children can give them the radios for staying connected.

Interesting to note is the fact that initially these radios were being used only by the defense forces and police but now have trickled down to the masses and become hugely popular.

Self-Improvement – Visionary Goal Setting in the Second Half of Life Brings Joy to Life

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The second half of life can be a new creative time of life. This is the time when ones inner voice gets louder urging one on that there is more to life – that being happy and productive doing something one really enjoys is possible. Time and again studies have shown that those who follow that deep inner voice are happier and healthier.

Over the years life has become not only routine but also full of obligations. Doing something different now means moving out of the comfort one. It may not be comfortable but change will take one out of the familiar towards a new path. You can start today to add vibrancy and energy to your life. These e-tips will start you on your journey.

Tip 1. Clarify Your Vision

Your vision is what you see when your inner voice speaks. Do you want a career change, start a new business, change where you live, have more connected relationships etc Really listen to yourself and get specific with yourself. It is easier to go after a goal when you know what it is.

Tip 2. Write Down Your Vision

Writing will help you clarify your thoughts and refine them. The creative process of writing may even take you in unanticipated directions.

Tip 3. Stay with Your Vision

Let it sink in. Your vision is something that you see and feel is possible for you. Create a picture for yourself.

Tip 4. Share Your Vision

Let close friends and family know what you would like for yourself. You may get support from people you least expect. If you get negative responses ignore them. If you can envision your vision for yourself hold on to it.

Tip 5. Begin With The End in Mind

Your vision becomes like the beacon from a lighthouse that urges you forward. If you can not picture the end result you may be chasing something that is not right for you. Re-think your vision and make it something you can be passionate about.

Tip 6. Take Action Towards Your Vision

Start taking steps that move you towards your vision. Anything you do to upgrade your life will get you closer to making your dream a reality. By evolving yourself you start moving out of your comfort zone.

Tip 7. Enjoy the Journey

Your vision or goal has given you a clear sense of direction. You do not know the steps you will take to get there so focus on the journey and not the outcome. The fun is in the journey. If you enjoy the journey the direction will evolve and you will make your vision a reality.

Churchill: A Life

Churchill: A Life Extraordinary – Abe F. March – Germany

Churchill was an extraordinary man and his contribution to the world, highly significant. He is a study in persistence and determination. His political presence was felt prior to World War I, although his genius was not utilized. He was beaten down time and again, but bounced back. His service as a soldier in WWI provided him with insights he used to enhance the fighting capability of the soldier, as with the development of the tank. His views were always centered on the big picture and how events would affect Europe in general.
After the war, Churchill became concerned about the rise of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. The military build-up in Germany was not matched in England much to Churchill’s dismay. He pressed for improvements in military readiness without the power for implementation. His concern for the welfare of the workingman was also high on his priority list and he was instrumental in introducing needed social reforms. As events developed, his predictions proved true. He was the most capable person to take charge in a time of crisis and won the support of the British people. As Prime Minister, his fight was not just for England, but also for the protection of Europe against the Nazi regime that threatened to engulf the region. He refused to give up in the face of adversity. As other countries were surrendering, he stayed the course. He inspired hope where there was despair and worked tirelessly in coordinating the war effort. He traveled numerous times to Washington to meet with President Roosevelt and to Russia to meet with Stalin. Russia was needed if Germany were to be beaten, however he soon realized that Stalin could not be trusted. Churchill then worked to prevent all of Eastern Europe from being assimilated into the Russian sphere of influence and control. Even at the age of 70, he continued to work. He was prepared to die for his country and for the people of Europe to save them from tyranny.
The book, “Churchill, a Life” is filled with details about strategies, events and tragedies that occurred in the course of his life. Churchill was a proponent of learning from history, however history was often repeated when good advice was ignored.
I highly recommend this book. It is more than 1000 pages in length and well worth the read.

Churchill as a pro-man – Felipe Andrés Gómez – Bogotá, Cundinamarca Colombia
This is a wonderful and detailed book. It gives a clear sense of WSC personality and tenacity. The one thing it probably lacks is a look at WSC personal life, but it goes deep into his public and political life. It is a wonderful an long read in order to determine WSC’s impact on modern history.
: Distilled from years of meticulous research and documentation, filled with material unavailable when the earliest books of the official biography’s eight volumes went to press, Churchill is a brilliant marriage of the hard facts of the public life and the intimate details of the private man. The result is a vital portrait of one of the most remarkable men of any age as well as a revealing depiction of a man of extraordinary courage and imagination.
It is impossible to understand the Second World War without understanding Winston Churchill, the bold British Prime Minister who showed himself to be one of the greatest statesmen any nation has ever known. This lengthy biography is a single-volume abridgment of a massive, eight-volume work that took a quarter-century to write. It covers Churchill’s entire life, highlighting not only his exploits during the Second World War, but also his early belief in technology and how it would revolutionize warfare in the 20th century. Churchill learned how to fly a plane before the First World War, and was also involved in the development of both the tank and anti-aircraft defense. But he truly showed his unmatched mettle during his country’s darkest moments: “His finest hour was the leadership of Britain when it was most isolated, most threatened, and most weak; when his own courage, determination, and belief in democracy became at one with the nation,” writes Gilbert. There are several wonderful books available on Churchill, but this is probably the best place to start.

Is Your Glass Half Empty?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It’s a question of perspective. Do you know instantly how you would answer that question? Or do you hover between the two, not quite wanting to be one way or the other but instinctively knowing which one you really are. When you ask yourself this question you are basically summing up the way you measure your levels of happiness and satisfaction. Do you look at life as though your glass is half empty? Only noticing what is missing or do you think your glass is half full; crammed with all the good things that you have in your life.

Satisfaction and happiness are interlinked, yet it often seems easier to measure how satisfied you are rather than how happy you are. Satisfaction can appear to be easier to achieve than happiness yet when you think about it, if you are satisfied with the result of something you become happier in that area.

Happiness is unique.

It is possibly the only thing that is sought for itself; people want to be happy. There are various things that you almost certainly seek to have within your life that you think when you have them they will make you happy or at least go towards making you happy. The only reason to have happiness is to be happy.

Happiness is an attitude.

It is a perspective that can be applied to the way in which you measure how satisfied you are in any or all areas of your life. It is possible to be happy in one area of your life and yet still feel unhappy with others, similarly you may feel happy with one area of your life and that spills over and makes you feel happy as a whole.

Happiness is a choice.

I have spoken before about how we choose our response in any given situation. It is also your choice whether to be or remain unhappy or whether you want to create steps and find ways to bring more happiness into your life. You can choose your perspective on happiness and be open to allowing in more of the things that make you happy. Recognise when your glass is half full. If you already see your glass as half full, what would make it overflow?

So how can you change your perspective and allow more happiness into your life?

1. Discover what makes you happy.

What really makes you happy? Take some time to think about the day to day things that make you feel happy. Remember times when you have felt really happy in the past. Look at the different areas of your life. What makes you happy in your career, relationships, health or environment? Note the things that currently make you happy, even the really tiny things. Is it getting all your work done? Having enough money to pay the bills, spending time with friends or singing out loud in the shower?

2. Increase your self awareness.

Tap into your feelings and you will recognise the things that make you happy. If you don’t know what it is that makes you happy; how will you know when you are? By telling yourself that life would be better if you were happy or that all you want in life is to be happy and yet not recognising what it is that makes you happy, you will never feel as though you are successful. The goal posts will forever be moving. Define what makes you happy and you will notice its existence more often. After all – we get what we focus on.

3. Find your passion.

What are the things that you are good at? Where do you feel most authentic? Find ways to pursue your passions even if it is only in the smallest ways and you will find that your happiness levels build up from a sense of connection with your true self. Understanding your values can help you to tap into your authentic self.

The Law of Attraction tells us that we are magnets and we attract what we give out, practise thinking positively and focusing on the things you want from life and you will start to feel happier, healthier and more at ease with yourself. Why not give it a try and surprise yourself!

Kabbalah For Dummies

Kabbalah For Dummies For what it is, definitely a 5. – L. Byron – New Orleans
This book is a very well organized and accessible primer on Kabbalah from a mostly traditional Jewish perspective. I have found it very useful as a ready reference and basic text on Kabbalah for my study of Qabalah in the Hermetic tradition.
: Kabbalah For Dummies presents a balanced perspective of Kabbalah as an “umbrella” for a complex assemblage of mystical Jewish teachings and codification techniques. Kabbalah For Dummies also shows how Kabbalah simultaneously presents an approach to the study of text, the performance of ritual and the experience of worship, as well as how the reader can apply its teaching to everyday life.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Unrated) [HD DVD]

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Unrated) [HD DVD]: Universal Pictures: Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) has gone 40 years without “doing it.” Now his pals are making it their mission to help him score… fast! Can he survive their hilariously bad advice? Will he land in the arms of the way-too-experienced or the way-too-drunk? Or can he find true love where he least expects – from a gorgeous grandmother (Catherine Keener)? When it comes to sex, there’s only one sure thing – The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The outrageous comedy hit is now the DVD that makes the pleasure last forever! Cult comic actor Steve Carell–long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman–leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There’s no point describing the plot; it’s about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet… something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm–and it’s a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. –Bret Fetzerread more.

When You Take Care of the Present the Future Takes Care of Itself

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What I am about to say may shock you, but other than those times when you are looking forward with joyful anticipation to an upcoming event, practically all of the thoughts you entertain about the future are in fact rooted in fear. In particular, the desire to know what will occur, and the urge to make detailed plans to ensure one’s own security down the road, are both related to the ego’s need for safety as a result of its deeply held fear of death. You can deny the truth in this, arguing that it is only prudent that a person plan for the future. However, if you are able to look deep within yourself, you will realize that it is indeed an accurate observation concerning human nature. To varying degrees, every single one of us is apprehensive about the future (i.e., the unknown), and so we burn amazing amounts of energy trying to get a hold on something that quite simply is impossible to grasp. According to Fr. Anthony DeMello in “Awareness”:

“So why are you anxious? Can you, for all your anxieties, add a single moment to your life? Why bother about tomorrow? Is there a life after death? Why bother about tomorrow? Get into today. Someone once said, “Life is what happens to us while we’re busy making other plans.” That’s pathetic.”

These certainly are powerful words, and yet it is really tough to challenge DeMello’s observations. Think about it carefully for a moment or two. What possible benefit can be derived from feeling anxious about the future? The answer is none, unless of course you happen to enjoy experiencing the feeling of anxiety. Moreover, what is the payoff for spending a great deal of time planning one’s life in minute detail? Perhaps all of this preparation helps people to assuage their fear of the future to some extent, but it quite obviously prohibits them from truly enjoying their present moments.

In truth, detailed planning for the future is not nearly as important as learning to keep your powerful thought and feeling energy concentrated in the present. The key to having the future you want is to clearly set your intent today, and then make your best efforts to focus thoughts and feelings each day on what you do want rather than what you don’t want. This sounds like simple advice, yet most people are inclined to let their fears get the better of them, and subconsciously allocate more of their “currency of creation” (i.e., thoughts and feelings) toward concerns about not getting what they want.

Getting out of this trap is very challenging, because the ego’s desire for security is so strong that your mind tends to automatically gravitate toward ‘future-thought’. From my own experience, a key to freeing yourself from this tendency is to work towards becoming a conscious observer of your thoughts. This means cultivating the ability to step back and acknowledge your thoughts as they crop up, and then doing your best to give the minimum amount of energy to those that are based in fear. As with any skill we work to develop within ourselves, remember to be patient with yourself, and also keep in mind the old adage that “practice makes perfect.” One rather thought-provoking way to overcome our inclination toward ‘future-thought’ is described in this additional quotation from Fr. Anthony DeMello:

“Visit a graveyard. It’s an enormously purifying and beautiful experience. You look at this name and you say, “Gee, he lived so many years ago, two centuries ago; he must have had all the problems that I have, must have had lots of sleepless nights.” How crazy, we live for such a short time. An Italian poet said, “We live in a flash of light; evening comes, and it’s night forever.” It’s only a flash and we waste it. We waste it with our anxiety, our worries, our concerns, our burdens.”

The next time you find yourself concerned with the future, visualize yourself looking down at your own tombstone, lamenting about how much time you squandered worrying about what might happen someday. The question is, do you really want to experience such feelings of regret after you depart this earth? Of course you don’t!! So one thing you can do when you find yourself feeling fearful or anxious about the future is to recall that image of your own gravestone, and use it as a reminder to keep your thoughts focused in the present moment.

Taming one’s trepidation about the future ultimately requires that a person muster up the courage to face up to his or her fears. What you will find as you embark upon this course is that it is kind of like confronting the neighborhood bully when you were a kid, in that those fears are not nearly as intimidating as you thought they would be.

Before closing this article, I will share with you this insightful quotation from “The Quest, A Journey of Spiritual Rediscovery” by Richard and Mary-Alice Jafolla:

“What about the future? Can you believe that if you keep on thinking the same thoughts, saying the same words, doing the same things, going in the same direction, the future will be any different than now? To look to the future as a savior without changing the present is to think an orange tree can grow from an acorn.”

Each moment of your life you have the unique opportunity to plant new seeds of thought, seeds that have the potential to someday sprout into all that you desire. In light of this reality, do not waste time fretting about what may occur, rather make full use of all of your ‘now’ moments by choosing to consciously create your ideal future instead.
