A computer hard disk crashing is the stuff nightmares are made of for all those who depend entirely on computers for their day-to-day work. When one talks of a hard disk crashing, it generally implies problems in the computer, the magnitude of which can be ascertained only when the data is recovered.

There are two basic types of damage to the hard disk, physical damage and logical damage. As the name would suggest, physical damage implies actual damage to parts of the computer or the central processing unit. It would comprise of wires, circuitry, chips, fuses, burnouts, etc. It means replacement or repair of parts. Logical damage, on the other hand indicates damage to the file system like incorrect reporting of various functions, system crashes, loss of data, directories gone wrong and other unaccountable discrepancies. Most operating systems come with a basic inbuilt tool kit and are able to repair faults up to a certain level.

A lot of lost data can be found using data recovery or date backup. Backup is very important and even a basic user should regularly implement it. Backup has to be done regularly, checked regularly and the data has to be uncompressed. Data backup has different roles to play. An effective rotation scheme, backup to a remote location and recovery strategy involves use of checksums to avoid making redundant copies. Data can now be salvaged from the backup storage files. There is another feature that ensures effective storage and that is continuous backup where backup is an ongoing process. It is far more effective than traditional backup systems.

Most manufacturers ensure that their product has certain features regarding data recovery and repair of logical systems. Call in a professional and you will be able to retrieve most, if not, all your lost data.

Data Recovery 101 – What to Do When Your Hard Drive Crashed

Data recovery is the best option you have at hand in the event that your hard drive crashes. By hiring the services of a data recovery expert, you stand a chance of recovering a big part of the data you lost, if not all of it.

You should not panic when your drive crashes, and neither should you do anything that may worsen your problem. If you act quickly and with a clear head, it is even possible that you may be able to fix the problem yourself without turning to a hard drive recovery specialist.

There are things that you should do and should not do in the event of a drive crash. You can read them below.

Things to Do When Your Hard Drive Crashes

You will know that your drive has crashed or is about to crash when you hear loud grinding or clicking sounds coming from your computer tower. However, it is also possible for your computer not to be able to read the hard disk without any obvious reasons.

When your computer cannot detect your drive and you do not see or hear any telltale sign as to why, here is what you should do:

1. Check if the connections of the disk cables and the power cables are where they should be.

2. See if the disk configuration is correct.

3. Try to access the crashed drive using another controller interface or adaptor. You can also try to see if another computer will be able to read the hard drive.

Things NOT to Do When Your Hard Drive Crashes

Just as there are things that you need to do when your drive crashes, there are also a few things that you should never do. Otherwise, you will only worsen the problem and increase the chances of all that data you need to have recovered being lost. Here they are.

1. Do not boot up your computer if it is obvious that your hard drive has a physical problem. If the grinding or the clicking is really loud, quit trying to start up your computer.

2. Do not attempt to repair your drive by yourself using data recovery freeware you have downloaded from the Internet, especially if you do not really know what you are doing. Using data recovery freeware without determining exactly what happened to your hard drive will only worsen your problem and increase the probability of you not being able to retrieve any bit of data from your drive.

Data Recovery Is Your Best Option

As soon as you have determined that your hard drive crashed and there is nothing that you yourself cannot do to reverse the problem, you should call a data recovery expert right away. A data recovery expert will determine the exact cause of the crash and perform the appropriate solution to the problem. You should be prepared when you give your hard drive to a drive recovery expert because the service can be expensive and time-consuming.

Data Recovery Solutions to Save Your Hard Drive

Because of data recovery solutions available today, a crashed drive does not have to be a moment of trauma for you. There are possible solutions you can turn to in order to get back the data that you lost, and if you act immediately, it is possible for you to have at least 80% of that data back.

Of course, preventing a hard drive crash is still the best solution to drive failure. Failing that, here are possible hard drive recovery solutions you can turn to in the event that your hard disk gives out on you.

Data Recovery Using Third-Party Software

If you are a person who knows his or her way around computers, you can attempt to perform the recovery yourself. You can do this with the help of third-party recovery software. What these pieces of software do is to help repair what logical errors caused your hard drive to fail and then try to retrieve the data stored in the bad sectors of the drive.

Although there are freeware out there that you can use to get your data back, you have a better guarantee of getting the job done with proprietary software. Still, the use of third-party software to perform your data recovery is very risky.

You should not attempt to do this if you are not that knowledgeable about computers. Otherwise, you will end up wasting precious time and money, and you stand the chance of losing all your data altogether.

Hiring Data Recovery Services

The best way to get your lost data back by far is hiring the services of a data recovery engineer. These recovery engineers are experts in their field. They investigate the cause of the hard drive error and then perform the appropriate measures.

Sometimes, in order to recover the data lost in the hard drive crash, a data recovery engineer may take your hard drive apart to repair whatever mechanical errors that caused it to crash. Sometimes, they may just use software that they have developed themselves. Anyhow, industry standards call for them to retrieve for you at least 80% of your lost data.

It is no secret that data recovery services can be quite expensive. Still, data recovery engineers know their job well and can be relied upon to do it, no matter how complicated the task is.

Preventing Hard Drive Crashes

Of course, the fact remains that the best way to deal with hard drive crashes is to prevent them from happening in the first place. It is actually easy to get this done. All it takes is for you to make it a habit to back up your files frequently, to defragment your hard drive regularly, and to implement measures such as protecting your computer with power surge regulators.

Data recovery is a lifesaver in that you can expect to get at least part of your data back. However, an ounce of prevention is still better than a pound of cure.

Flash Data Recovery

Flash disks have become ubiquitous media for everything from computer data, mp3 players and digital cameras. It has replaced the floppy disk as means to carry data around. Flash disks are solid-state devices and, therefore, have no moving parts. Plugging it into the USB drive, the flash drive is automatically recognized by the computer without any need of installing additional software. With expected lifetime measured in hundreds of thousands of write-erase cycles, flash drives are expected to last up to 10 years. That’s more than twice that of a hard disk.

Flash disk portability however leads to a higher probability of damage due to environmental factors. Aside from the regular causes of drive failure, flash drives could get wet in the rain, the casing could shatter when it is accidentally dropped, or it could be damaged while inside the camera.

The difference in data storage between a flash drive and a regular hard drive or a floppy is due to the data residing on a chip. This allows for a truly random access across the whole media. In fact, the disk access algorithm makes sure that the data is spread evenly among data sectors with the use of “wear leveling algorithm.” The flash disk has a finite number of write or erase cycles. If it were to keep on writing to a particular sector, that sector would literally wear out from use much earlier than the other sectors. The wear leveling algorithm ensures that the sectors wear out evenly. And also because of the wear leveling algorithm, when a data sector wears out, the rest of the disk is sure to quickly follow.

In some instances, the camera cannot distinguish between the file system on the flash disk and force a format. Early flash disks used FAT12 or FAT16. FAT32 is used by current generation large capacity flash disks. If the digital camera fails to detect the flash drive’s capacity it might wrap around data while writing the photo and over-write system areas.

There are times the flash disk could not be read by the computer. Though attributed to the computer, this is an error caused by the camera or MP3 player OS. Unplugging the drive while it’s writing data may also cause a corrupted flash drive.

Flash data recovery in most ways is like recovery from any other media using FAT. The only difference is the location of the media files. The data can be recovered by using data recovery tools capable of reading FAT. Typically for cameras, the file structure is fixed. The camera’s limited operating system will write to a specific folder on the directory. The same goes with MP3 players. The mp3 files have to be located in a specific directory for the mp3 player to locate and play them. Some specialized tools look for the specific folder where the media files should be.

Treating all the data on the disks as data files, disk recovery programs or other utilities are capable of correcting any errors. The Windows CHKDSK utility treats the disk like any other drive.

In case of lost data, flash data recovery is just like recovering data from any other medium but, again, with slight differences. Because the data is stored differently, there are more tools available for flash data recovery. Available tools and utilities include flash data recovery specializing in picture files or mp3 music files. Other specialized utilities which can be used for flash data recovery are those which specifically recover data from FAT drives. In case the pictures were accidentally erased from the camera, these utilities are also able to recover them and recover the picture.

In some cases, data recovery can be even simpler. A flash disk recovered from a lake or which got wet from the rain may still be usable after making sure that the circuitry is completely dry. And a flash disk with a broken case might even be usable. In both instances, it would be good to test first by plugging it in. If the drive is still readable, just copy the files before deciding what to do with the flash drive.

How To Use 7 Basic Steps To Perform A Windows Data Recovery

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In our computerized world, there are a lot of horror stories out in our world when it comes to retrieving this data. In lots of situations, when there is lost data because of hard drive issues, it is almost critical to not run the drive.

Are there many people using software to recover data?

Many people who have used software to recover the data and because it can be a long process with the program, more damage can occur. In order to prevent this, here are some steps on how to perform a windows data recovery.

What are the 7 steps? They are:

1) Shut down the computer, and then find another computer that is running Windows 2000 or XP. Then download your computer recovery software onto the second computer, and go back to the computer you were on and remove the hard drive from it.

But before that it is a good idea to make an image of your whole drive with a disk imaging software. Do these before you decide to start work on the drive.

There are chances your drive may not ever work on your computer again. The procedure that you are about to learn will help prevent you leaving being important data without knowing it. Inadequate software can be the cause of what is called “feather”damage to your drive. Then after that take the hard drive and install it on the second computer as a data drive.

2) Laptop computer hard drive can be connected to your desktop computer with an adapter. If you want to have cheap data recovery because your recovery software doesn’t work with USB, but you are capable of using IDE, you only need a 44 to 40 pin IDE adapter.

These is just affordable, it only cost you around ten to twenty dollars. It’s available at most leading stores that carry supplies for computers. Make it sure that your windows program does not use the “check disk” utility to repair the drive.

3) Use the data recovery program to run your windows data recovery on the second computer you are using. Immediately shut down your computer if you are only using one computer. With the second step of your windows data recovery, you are still going to remove the hard drive of this computer.

4) And then install a new drive, reinstall windows and use your recovery software on it, just take safety precautions, because many people used software to recover data but because, it takes you time to process the program, more damage can occur, just be careful with this.

When the drive becomes more damaged, it can make the recovery process almost impossible. The recovery software does serve its purposes when you can afford to bring your drive to a professional recovery service.

5) Then use your recovery software to recover the data to your new hard drive. But Make it sure that the windows “check disk” utility program does not try to repair the drive when it is booted.

6) Make sure that you recover your data completely, If you want your windows data recovery run smoothly as possible, make it sure that you protect your file.

7) In order to protect your file, once you have installed and downloaded the recovery program onto your computer, you can use it to search for files that you can’t find and recover them to another drive that is on your computer.

What are the items you need?

USB external drive, memory stick, and network-shared folder these are some items that you can use to store your files.

In conclusion, performing a windows data recovery is simple and easy to do provided you know how to do it. I believe with the right tools and practice you can perform any kind of windows data recovery with a breeze.

Therefore, Eddy has started a information guide on how to help any level of computer users to manage their data recovery process with ease and also recommend some tips and techniques in data recovery.

Is Online Data Backup Part of Your Disaster Recovery Plan?

Whether you have a small business or a large corporation, one of the most valuable assets of your business is its electronic data. Your business’s electronic data consists of its financial information, documentation on clients and sales, and all other data stored on your computers and file servers.

Have you ever thought about what would happen to your company if you were the victim of any kind of disaster? Natural or man-made?

How expensive would the recovery effort be? Would your business be able to recover from such a loss? Where would you even begin the recovery process? All of these questions, and more, should be addressed in your company’s disaster recovery plan.

Every single business today, large or small, should have a disaster recovery plan in place for its electronic data. No matter what the size or income of your company is, you need to be able to recover your electronic data if something happens to your servers or to your buildings.

To start to build your disaster recovery plan, you will have some serious choices to make about how you archive your data and where you will store it once it has been backed up.

One option for backing up your data is to back it up on tapes each day. If you have a small amount of data you can perform complete daily backups each evening when no one is in the building and using your file server.

If you choose to backup your data each night, you will need multiple tapes so that you will always have archives to restore from if the need ever arises and you find something wrong with one of your tapes.

If you perform onsite backups then you will need to take your media to an offsite location to store at least once each week. By storing a copy offsite, you make certain that if there is a disaster at your building then your data will still be available to you. This will help you if you have to rebuild your file servers from scratch.

The downside to onsite backup is that it requires you to have an information technology technician to physically change-out tapes. And, more importantly, they need to remember to move your media tapes offsite each week.

Another downside to localizing the task is that the media tapes can be very expensive to purchase, and you will probably need many of them for your nightly and weekly replication tasks.

A more attractive option to using onsite data backup is to perform all of your replication to an offsite backup location. You can do this by utilizing a professional online backup service.

To use a professional online data backup service you would simply schedule a time for your server to connect to your backup service and duplicate your data onto their server. The data will travel over the Internet, through a secure and encrypted channel.

There are many big advantages to using an online data backup service. You do not have to purchase tapes and tape drives. You do not have to have someone remember to physically change your tapes, and remember to bring them to an offsite location.

And, your data is much safer being stored a long way away from your business, in a safe and secure computing environment.

It is vital to the existence of your business to address the issue of backing up and storing your electronic data. By making a disaster recovery plan, which includes online backup services, you can be assured your data is safe and secure in case you need it for any reason.

Data Recovery For NAND and NOR Flash Memory

Image : http://www.flickr.com

NAND or NOR Flash Memory: Flash memory is a non-volatile data storing memory wafer that involves electrically erasing and reprogramming technology. Being non-volatile these chips are capable of storing data even in the absence of power and are renowned for fast reading and better kinetic shock resisting qualities. NAND devices are accessed serially, using the same eight pins to transmit control, addressing and data. NAND flash was introduced by Toshiba in 1989.

Although NAND and NOR memory chips function differently they are still widely being used in various electronic devices where data storing, erasing and reprogramming are essential. Both invented by DR. Fujio Masuoka in his work place Toshiba, the main goal was set to outdate the old storage devices that functions under magnetic energy like: hard disks and cassette tapes by reducing the cost per bit and increasing maximum chip capacity.

Hence, NAND flash is widely used in MP3 players, USB drives and digital cameras where higher storage capacity is crucial. But, some devices like pocket PC’s can be found using both types of flash memory at the same time. These PC’s typically use NAND for memory storage and NOR to boot the operating system.

Flawed Memory Drives and Data Recovery:

Data recovery is a highly specialized science which is equally valid for rescuing data from both NAND and NOR flash. Although, NOR is rarely used and is quite expensive, NAND is preferred extensively for mass storage and a huge godsend for thin and smaller devices.

The probability of data loss is elevated when bad memory storage is used: unbranded USB drives, unbranded NAND wafer devices, etc. These unbranded memory devices & chips are often noticed in spontaneous reboots leading to program failure. A malfunctioning RAM is often noticed to write correct data in an incorrect location of the drive which eventually creates a data malfunction and data loss. Furthermore, using flawed memory can also cause degradation of your hard drives logical capability and can finally destroy your device, the most extreme: an unbootable system or device.

Data recovery or NAND data recovery can minimize your loss and protect your machine from any incurable situation; we highly suggest avoiding the purchase of unbranded USB drives, SD cards, USB sticks, CompactFlash cards, and any other no-name devices for storing your crucial data. NAND recovery is possible but very complicated.

First Aid Before Data Recovery:

Data loss is a common problem that we often face due to virus attacks in our USB drives or when our computers get physically or logically over used. To fix these data degradation problems data recovery is only one solution that can rescue you and your data from the nightmare of any permanent loss. But, experts believe that data loss often becomes a complicated task when a user ignores the safety measures that help to avoid further data losses. Thus, in case of data loss some safety measures should be applied.
When data loss is acknowledged, further procedures to retain the data should not be made. This may lead to much more serious data loss.
It’s better to contact experts for help and other remedy measures.
Using software like: scandisk should be completely avoided.
Avoid no-name or unbranded devices.
eBay sellers are not always honest eProvided (TM) has learned many times where customers data is stored on fake NAND wafers, your purchase of a 16GB SD card may yield a soon to be damaged 1GB NAND wafer inside.

Data Recovery for Hard Drives & NAND Storage:

Data recovery processes embrace various techniques with latest technologies. At first, experts determine the fault on the device and classify them into Tier 1 and Tier 2. If your device falls into Tier 1 this means your device is suffering from a logically damaged component and data recovery costs are normally cheaper as compared to Tier 2. But, if your device has Tier 2 fault than your device is physically injured and may have many internal damaged circuits which need circuit and recovery experts; the process will normally be more costly.

After determining tier 1 or tier 2 an image of device is saved and these images are relocated to a separate server to avoid any accidental loss. Then the original copy of the image is transported to a lab where first degree data recovery is performed using various utilities which may include repairing faults in the device, dumping directly from NAND wafers, repairing circuits, crystals etc. Other various attempts are also made which includes testing and recovering from the logical damage on the device.

If the first degree recovery fails then the task is considered to be severe and second degree recovery is practiced which includes high level techniques and experts with professional knowledge over critical uses of software and hexadecimal formulas. These software utilities are used to re-build the drive and manipulate other drive errors.

In case of physical faults like: motor replacements, repairing heads or cleaning scratches different cleaning liquids and other spare parts are available according to the size and code. After every physical and logical recovery attempt the rescued data is copied to an additional storage device like: CD/DVD’s, flash drives, and hard drives.

Data Loss Prevention and Recovery

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Data loss is un-intimated and the best way to stand firmly against it is prevention. Data recovery will not be necessitated, if you adopt top two rules of the computing and data saving life. The first one is taking backups and the second one is taking care of your system.

Systems do have failure chances, always at peek level. But before they could crash, they always give you some warning signs, where some classic signs include scratching and clicking sounds. If you become unable to save your system from crash, data recovery services are always ready to pull you out of the crisis, lying at a telephonic call distance.

On the other hand, the data loss occasions where you are responsible for doing the mischief of deleting the file or letting the virus in, because the anti-virus software was not installed, lets you to recover the lost data through data recovery software. However, if ignorance to the system and its data is not adopted, the data recovery will be less demanded.

Always consider your system not just the source of recreation, data saving destination or the stuff of your work room, but also the lifeline of your organization. With the regular maintenance of the system, you can be able to safeguard it to the maximum. The topmost ways comprise of having the updated virus protection utility for your system, keeping care that your system may stay away from liquids, over heating conditions and other data horrifying situations. Always make sure that you plug your system into a surge protected outline.

Regularly freeing up the disk space and cleaning up your system also contribute to prevent data loss and hence reduce the risks. But unfortunately, even the foolproof plan is not practically able to bring complete immunity to the hard drive and data. Data loss always remains undesirable reality for your business.

The good technology statement has a clause that data recovery tools and procedures can grant you the success in recovering the lost information hopefully. Data recovery software through the scanning abilities and data recovery service through their media examining and repairing tricks help you out of the major disasters of data loss.

Suncourt AIRIVA HE150 Heat Recovery Ventilation System

Poor Workmanship on the Assembly line – K. Kordes – Denver,CO
The Suncort Airiva HE150 was shipped on time and arrived in a timely manner, the item was well packed and arrived undamaged. However when I started the insulation I noted that a large number of the rivets holding the case together had not been properly set, therefore the case and latches were falling off the rests of the assembly. Since it was in place and hocked up it was easier to replace the rivets than to remove the unit and return it. Appears to be a Quality control issue on the assembly line with riveting.
The Airiva HE150 works great and is doing a great job with supplying fresh air for the basement.
