Online Range Ecology Masters Degree Courses

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Range or range lands are large, barren lands that are not suitable for plant growth, and thereby for agriculture and cultivation. The main use of range lands is as a source of continuous forage for cattle. Ranges can also act as source of natural resources like minerals and timber. Also range lands can be converted as spaces for recreation and enjoyment. An ideal range land is one which provides all the above-mentioned uses. It should continuously provide foliage for domestic animals; it should provide natural resources; also it should have the spatial requirements to be converted as a recreational park. For converting a range land into a multi-purpose eco-system, it should be managed professionally and scientifically. A branch of science has emerged for this purpose. It is called the management of range ecology. Generally the management of range ecology is related with the sciences of environment and agriculture.
There are a number of universities and educational institutions in United States that offer post-graduate courses in management of range lands. Colorado State University, Nova Southeastern University, Washington State University, Oregon State University, Montana State University, University of Florida, Brigham Young University and University of Idaho are some of the popular universities in United States that offer post-graduate courses in range management. The number of students enrolling for the subject of range ecology and management is continuously increasing thanks to the good career prospects the subject offers in various government and ecological organizations.
The idea of distance education has gained an advantage when the personal computer and internet became common household items. Many universities are quick to spot the advent of technology and the opportunities it offers. Such universities began to offer online learning facility for their regular courses. In the online learning program, students can register themselves through the website of the university and choose a course that they like to learn. The university then sends study materials to the students through internet. Some universities even provide video conferencing facility for creating a real-life class-room learning atmosphere. There are several universities that allow students to obtain masters degree on range ecology and its management through internet even though this is not a common and traditional specialization like physics or zoology.
The Animal and Range Sciences Department of Montana State University offers a post-graduate degree course on animal and range sciences. The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences offers an online masters degree course on environmental management, part of which involves management of range ecology, as part of the Duke Environmental Leadership Program. Nova Southeastern University offers an online distance learning program, through which one can enroll for masters degree on range ecology. The Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management of Oregon State University also offers a post-graduate course on range ecology and management. The course is accredited by the Society for Range Management, which is the premier institution of range land management in United States.

Wal-Mart Camping And Other Free Places

Image : http://www.flickr.com
“Do you know about Wal-Mart camping?” We didn’t know, but the old man at the campground in Florida insisted WalMart not only allowed RVs and vans to park overnight, but encouraged it. “Free camping,” he told us, and we didn’t wait long to take advantage of this new knowledge.
Somewhere in northern Georgia we pulled into a Wal-Mart, and sure enough, we saw some RVs off to one side of the parking lot, looking like they were there for the night. We were heading back to Michigan in our conversion van, and free camping sounded good to us. We parked, plugged in our 5-inch T.V., and settled in for the night. Nobody bothered us. In the morning we used the bathrooms inside, and bought some orange juice.
The next night we camped for free again, this time at a “Flying J” truckstop. There were RVs camping there as well. You’ll find Flying J Truckstops all over, and they actively court the RV crowd, counting on gas and other sales. We filled our tank there in the morning, and bought some food as well. As long as campers stay out of the way of the truckers, free camping is likely to continue.
Other Free Camping Places
Generally, you can camp free on any BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, unless it’s specifically forbidden in an area. This is also true of National Forest lands. In both cases you’re limited to a stay of two weeks in one place, though this rule is not always enforced, and the next two-week place might have to be only a hundred yards away. State forest lands are usually open to free camping without permits, but policies vary by state (The two-week rule seems to be common).
We camped in our van for ten days at Williams Landing, east of Tallahassee, Florida, on Lake Talquin. It’s a beautiful place, with hot showers. Our cost? Zero, and you can stay up to two weeks. There are free campgrounds scattered around the country. Ask an RVer about this, or buy a Woodall’s directory from any large RV dealer.
Note: Wal-mart seems to encourage the campers, except in coastal areas where too many RVer’s want to live in a parking lot. Don’t roll out the carpet and put out lawn furniture like one traveler we heard about, or you may ruin it for all. Some stay for a week at a time, going out all day to see the sights (and so they don’t wear out their welcome). Wal-mart gets business from the campers, but they’ll only continue their policy if they don’t have problems, so keep it low-key.
To find a Wal-Mart in the area you’re traveling to, visit Walmart.com. Scroll down to the “store finder” link to search. Thank you for camping at Wal-Mart!

The Soldier and the Vampire, a Russian Fairy Tale for Playing RPG Games
Eastern Europe and Russian are the lands of the vampires. Few peoples have created such a dark pantheon of creatures as have those in Eastern Europe, so it comes as no surprise that Russian Fairy tales like that of “The Soldier and the Vampire” will help you make some of the darkest fantasy role playing games and worlds. Such stories are important to read, not only to go to the source of inspiration but because often times such vampires are very different from what we would expect. In the folk tale “The Soldier and the Vampire” a soldier meets a vampire who acts friendly and cordial to him, and goes with him to a wedding party. At first the vampire is friendly at the wedding party as well but then as he gets drunk he turns into the monster. Driving out the wedding guests and then causing the groom and the bride to pass out. He then uses an awl to drain their blood, in revenge for imagined wrongs, so as to hold their life in vials.
The soldier for his part must fight this vampire until dawn, and then at the cock’s crow the vampire falls lifeless, for it is not that exposure to sunlight burns these monsters, but rather that during the day vampires such as the one in this story loose their magical mobility. However even when lifeless vampires are not so easy to defeat. For in this story he must be burnt with birch wood, and as he burns thousands of maggots, cats, and other animals will appear and attempt to flee the fire, these hold his soul so if but one gets away he will come back to life to seek revenge.
In Role Playing Games vampires have become fairly typical with only one kind, or perhaps different clans in some cases. However in folklore there where dozens of different vampires some barely resembling others, needing to be killed by stakes, by burning, or in this case by burning with a specific type of wood. Such a vampire could make for a long term villain for PC’s as it comes back over and over again. Forcing them to face a now more clever opponent every night as they search for someone who would know how to kill this creature for once and for all. This search could lead them into dark woods, and distant lands to find a witch, perhaps to Baba Yaga herself.
Another interesting way to run the way to run the search for the defeat the monster in RPG campaigns is to have an elder, a grandparent type figure help direct the PC’s. This would help to draw them into the world, and would therefore allow more of a story, something necessary for true horror campaigns (should you wish to run one).
It is also important to notice in the fairy tale of “The Soldier and the Vampire” that the soldier and the vampire start out as relative friends, that only after drinking does the vampire show any real outward signs of evil. The villains the PC’s are forced to fight then could be a friend, someone they may have known for a short time or even a longer while, who is prone to a sudden violent attack not even directed towards the PC’s. The PC’s are then left with the choice between saving a village or the person they know, again such fairy tale dilemma’s are what could truly make the RPG plot line so interesting.
Another important aspect of this story to add to your plot lines is simply the act of visiting peasant weddings for a rest. Doing simple things like this can help bring your characters more fully into the richness of the fantasy world and it is such things as this after all that help separate good fantasy novels from bad ones, for where nearly all fantasy stories will have battle scenes only the great ones will have your characters interact with the folk of the world. It is this first and foremost that you will be able to take from folktales to make all your role playing game ideas better.

Connecting the Dots of the Paranormal: Hollow Earth Theory and The Lands Beneath

Image : http://www.flickr.com
I know I’ve dwelled on fairies for quite a while in my articles, but this mostly due to their constant reappearance, in some form or another, as times go by despite how much our world changes and becomes more modern. This last aspect of their existence, called “The Lands Beneath” by the Reverend Robert Kirk in his book, ties in very well with other legends that our Earth may be hollow.
Hollow Earth Theory, if you are one hearing this term for the first time, is the concept, thought, or belief that the Earth is hollow. Normally it is believed holes exist at the poles of the Earth that can lead one inside. While no modern account really exists of anyone actually entering the Earth and returning to tell the story, it is had long belief across the globe in various forms as the times changed.
“The Lands Beneath” is what the beings Robert Kirk encountered in Aberfoyle, Scotland, called where they live. A place under the Earth. His books are really worth checking out, a lot of his writing lives on today as the basis for what we typically widely regard as fairy life and culture. The place, described by Kirk, is said to be as real as it is to you reading this article now, filled with forest, mountains, and countryside much like our fairytale vision of that today. He would have no feeling of traveling far if he did with his companion, and believed the world around him was thought into existance. Even the things he saw he was unsure were really there later, figuring that’s how he thought it should look. It was a dreamlike world, seemingly controlled by thought.
Before getting into other areas here, a basic difference should be noted. The fairies of Kirk’s writings went back to The Lands Beneath through passages of their own design in the hill and land forms where Kirk lived. The Hollow Earth Theory almost exclusively cites the poles at entrance points. This is a small, but I think important, detail.
The Greek’s belief in Hades, Christianity’s Hell, and the Egyptian’s Underworld are great examples of how beliefs and thought of a place beneath us has changed over thousands of years. Another theory has been proposed that our Earth exists in layers. Us on the surface, caves and tunnels with their own culture and cities in the next layer, and finally the existance of a world like ours in the center. The idea of a dimly lit sun suspended in the center of the Earth seems to reappear in what seem to be unrelated stories and accounts of strange happenings to people, though few exist today. There is the idea that aliens are landing their spacecraft under the Earth as well, taking off and landing at their own leisure.
Without actually going inside can we find out how true any of our current theories or past beliefs are. Like many paranormal things a hollow Earth has many avenues of tradition, legends, and stories, even if they don’t directly say so. By looking between the lines we are bound to fine bits of truth, maybe enough to discover if a place under us really exists.

Annihilation of Native Americans

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In America today, there are many discussions about racism, diversity and cultures. Some believe we are a melting pot with blended families and everyone is treated equal. While others view our society as one of disparate treatment, inequities among the races and injustice and unfair treatment inflicted by the majority population towards minorities.
One culture of people that does not appear often in today’s headlines is the Native Americans. In my opinion, there is little discussion about their experience and their sacrifices. While much is said in regards to Jewish holocaust experience, Vietnamese and Latino immigration experience and the African American slavery experience, there is little mention of the first inhabitants of American soil.
After reading the Fact of Life by George Russell, the Native American experience interests me. Thus, I pose the question did the U.S. Government’s negative impact on Native Americans caused an annihilation of the first inhabitants of American soil. If they have not been annihilated have they blended into mainstream America without a trace of their own culture and heritage? If they still exist, as a separate culture/ race of people, I want to know how did they survive and what is their status in today’s society. This paper is my attempt to uncover the answers to the above questions and reach a conclusion in regards to the Native Americans.
Prior to 1492, Native Americans roamed the plains of the vast lands that later became known as the United States of America. During this time, they had their own culture, language, and society. The Native Americans culture was similar to other people that inherited the earth. They had a sense of family, values, spirituality, and survival, as they harvested the land, hunted fish and made a living for them. These Native Americans existed in tribal relationships with each tribe having their own language, nutritional habits, and religion and spirituality and beliefs system. Some of these tribes were known as of Mogollon, Atezc, Cherokee, and Navajo.
Before the 1492 invasion by Europeans, the first inhabitants existed in a vast population. However, after the Europeans began their colonization and land confiscation, many changes occurred for the people who later became known as Native Indians/Native Americans. These changes occurred as a direct result of the actions of European settlers. With the arrival of Europeans settlers and government’s intervention, the Indians land system changed forever.
As the Europeans descended on this land, they begin to put their own government in place. The Dutch, French, English and Spanish created a government relevant to their native experience and began to claim territorial rights, in North America. This was a way for these invaders to set up laws that they thought would be a practical and appropriate manner to acquire the land.
Although, initially the new setters were seeking to compromise and establish mutually acceptable terms. Over time, those first inhabitants were deprived of their rights of land ownership with severe consequences to them. The initial policies established by the settlers, required payment for the acquisition of land from the native landholders. However, the government did not uniformly enforce this policy to all Indians. Occasionally they would pay the Indians and other times they would acquire the land by right of occupancy. Thus, these settlers were manipulating the Native Americans and the squatter’s rights prevailed. The land was acquired from Native Americans by these settlers by a squatter merely taking up residency on the property with no payment to the Indians. This became the prevailing practice as competition for land ownership existed among the settlers.
As the settlers’ families increased so did the need to acquire more land. Frustrations over previous land ownership laws became prevalent among the settlers. Many were looking for justification to enhance their cause and quest for additional land ownership. Not only did they look for revisions in laws but religious justification for their actions. Some of the arguments that were presented were that the Indians did not own the land by natural right, that the Bible required man to inherit the earth and the Indians were not considered men. Thus, laws begin to formulate solely to benefit the settlers. Therefore, violence and bloodshed erupted between the settlers and Indians.
Congress step in and bridge a gap between farmer and Indian in 1756 appointing Sir William Johnson and Edmund Atkin as superintendents of the newly created north and south districts for Indian affairs. Their report indicated that colonist frequently and fraudulently purchased Indian lands or occupied the land without consent or benefit of title. The relationships between the settlers and Indian became more strained, and armed conflicts increased.
America’s attention was diverted to a war with Great Britain, and the issues between the settlers and the Indians were decided in the settler’s favor. The government created a new structure based on the Articles of Confederation. This new structure as well as Congress enactment of laws, disadvantaged the Indians’ rights to land ownership.
The American government began to conquer villages and tribal nations with the intent to make treaties with the Indians. These treaties would arbitrarily draw boundaries lines in favor of the government. The government became the landowner and force the Native Americans into land reserved and designated solely for them. This land later became known as Indian Reservations.
After the new government intervened, the American Indians were not considered a citizen. This was the precursor to the government forcing the Indians off their land and turning some into slaves, or prisoner of war. Not only were they stripped of their land, enslaved, some were killed, many were also plagued with diseases, and relegated to land that was not as desirable. The annihilation of the American Indians began.
The beginning of Columbus sparked a 400-year cycle and the exploitation, enslavement, and genocide has plagued the American Indians for centuries. In 400 years, a massive number of Indians have been exterminated through genocide.
Summary
This reminds me of the disadvantage small farmers of the 21st- century. After a number of disappointments (treaties, land grant, housing) American Indians continue to develop strong cultural boundaries between them and the government. Now in the 21st century, we need to appreciate the accomplishment and contributions that American Indians have made to humanity and the land. In a Washington Post article dated Friday, July 27, 2001, some appreciation and acknowledgment was bestowed upon the Navajo Indians for their contributions made during World War II. This is just one step in recognizing the Native Americans for their diversity, culture and values that they bring to all America.
Former President Kennedy further amplifies this in his quote below.
“It seems a basic requirement to study the history of our Indian people. America has much to learn about the heritage of our American Indians. Only through this study can we as a nation do what must be done if our treatment of the American Indian is not to be marked down for all time as a national disgrace.” John F. Kennedy-1963

Ballistics in Forensics – Reading Between the Ridges in a Gun Barrel

Image : http://www.flickr.com
When lands and grooves grab and spin a projectile, or bullet, moving down the barrel of a firearm, they also create cuts in the projectile. These cuts leave behind distinctive markings that are at the heart of firearms comparisons. Lands, or ridges, refer to the high parts made when the factory makes cuts into the barrel of a firearm to make grooves, the low parts. These lands and grooves create markings known as striations on the projectile. Striations are straight and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the projectile. One can see that striations are more prevalent on soft lead bullets than they are on metal or jacketed bullets.
Silencers are gadgets that are designed to suppress or muffle the report of a gunshot. These can include a shirt wrapped around the barrel to a high-tech sound-absorbing screw-on attachment. Such attachments can also leave behind distinctive markings on projectiles, but these markings are not predictable. If a silencer does leave distinctive impressions on the projectile but is not available for examination by the time the forensic firearms examiner test-fires the gun, these impressions may hinder the scientist’s attempt to find a match between the bullet and the gun from which it was fired.
In addition to the presence of lands, grooves, striations, and twists, each rifled barrel has minute qualities that set it apart from all others. A rifled gun barrel is the result when the manufacturer carves spiral grooves into the parietal surface of the barrel in order to make projectiles spin as they are forced down the barrel. This spinning action allows the bullet to stabilize itself during flight. This is the same physics concept with footballs as the quarterback passes the spinning ball to the receiver waiting to catch the ball down the field. For this reason, gun barrels are said to be rifled in order to promote the spinning of a bullet.
For the purposes of forensics, a rifling tool cuts through each metal gun barrel a bit differently. As subsequent barrels are carved out, the cutting or carving equipment becomes worn with repeated use. This progressive wear and tear creates rifling patterns that differ from one barrel to another. Furthermore, repeated firing also wears down and damages the lands and grooves. This action makes each barrel unique as well as each bullet that passes through it.
In a nutshell, projectiles fired from the same firearm have the same striated patterns, but bullets fired from different ones do not. The microscopic striations found on a projectile are so unique that they are indicative that the bullet had to come from a particular gun excluding all others. This singles out one gun that sets it apart from others of the same make and model.
It is useful for the forensic firearms examiner to compare individualized striations. The first step to making this kind of comparison is to get an intact projectile fired from the suspect weapon. To do this, many firearms laboratories have a test-firing chamber. The forensic scientist then looks at the lab-fired projectile and compares it to the crime-scene bullet, using what is known as a comparison microscope. This microscope can juxtapose the images of the two projectiles to help make an accurate comparison.
For instance, projectiles found at the crime scene can be compared to ascertain whether they were fired from the same gun. If not, it can be concluded that more than one firearm was used. Similarly, separate bullets, each one retrieved from different crime scenes, can be compared to find out whether the same gun fired them. If there is a positive match, this can strongly indicate that the two crimes are connected. Most importantly, a projectile extracted from a shooting victim can be compared with a projectile that has been test-fired from a suspect weapon. A positive match would indicate that the weapon of suspect is the one used in the crime. This, in turn, can be the key to identifying the offender.
Two bullets do not have to be a 100% match in every detail to be considered solid evidence. Many times, they never do. The reason for this is that every projectile fired from a gun slightly changes the barrel and leaves behind soot and grit. These alterations inside the barrel and the deposited foreign materials change the impressed markings left on a subsequent projectile. Moreover, handling a soft bullet such as a lead bullet may add, remove, or change the existing markings. Even though two projectiles do not need to be exact copies, you have to find the same identical patterns on a minimum of three consecutive striations on each projectile for them to be a positive match with a gun.

The Contemplative Ideal of Buddhism

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In all Buddhist lands, though good laymen are promised the blessings of religion, the monastic and contemplative life is held up as the ideal. In Christendom, this ideal is rejected by Protestants and for the Roman and Oriental Churches it is only one among others. Hence every one’s judgment of Buddhism must in a large measure depend on what he thinks of this ideal. Monks are not of this world and therefore the world hates them. If they keep to themselves, they are called lazy and useless. If they take part in secular matters, they meet with even severer criticism. Yet can any one doubt that what is most needed in the present age is more people who have leisure and ability to think?
Buddhist monks are men of higher aspirations than others: they try to make themselves supermen by cultivating not the forceful and domineering part of their nature but the gentle, charitable and intelligent part. The laity treat them with the greatest respect provided that they set an example of a life better than most men can live. A monastic system of this kind is found in Burma. I do not mean that it is not found in other Buddhist lands, but I cite an instance which I have seen myself.
The Burmese monks are not far from the ideal of the Buddha, yet perhaps by adhering somewhat strictly to the letter of his law they have lost something of the freedom which he contemplated.
In his time there were no books: the mind found exercise and knowledge in conversation. A monastery was not a permanent residence, except during the rainy season, but merely a halting-place for the wanderers, continually hearing and seeing something new. Hermits and solitary dwellers in the forests were not unknown but assuredly the majority of the monks had no intention of secluding themselves from the intellectual life of the age.
What would the Buddha have done had he lived some hundreds or thousands of years later? I see no reason to doubt that he would have encouraged the study of literature and science. He would probably have praised all art which expresses noble and spiritual ideas, while misdoubting representations of sensuous beauty.

Take in Scotland’s Wickerman Festival in 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com
If you’re desperate to check out some great live music while staying in Scottish castles for rent, then be sure to head to the Wickerman Festival. Taking place every year at the East Kirkcarswell Farm, near Kirkcudbright, the two-day musical extravaganza will see established bands and up and coming acts alike perform at a number of stages and tents.
July 23rd and 24th are the days this year’s Wickerman Festival takes place on and numerous bands and solo performers from across the UK will be appearing.
Whether you are staying in castle accommodation in the UK or otherwise, the wide variety of acts should offer something for you no matter what your taste in music is. However, if you’re a fan of acoustic music the suitably-titled acoustic tent may be the place for you.
Some of Britain’s most well-known musical acts will appear at the main stage so if you’re keen for a massive sing-a-long then be sure to head here.
Wickerman is known as one of the country’s premier grassroots music festivals, so may well find you’ve got the chance to take in some performances from lesser-established bands – and who knows, you could discover the next big thing!
Both single and weekend passes are available – so if you just want to take in a performance from one of your favourite acts that are appearing or are keen for the full festival experience, you should be able to get a ticket package that suits you.
With the event taking place over the course of the weekend, you have the option of camping out but if you’re taking in the festival as part of a longer break in the area then seeking out castles to rent in Scotland may make for a more convenient base.
If you want to take a break from the music or have time to kill while you wait for one of your favourite acts to appear why not go for a wander through the on-site village shop?
Here you can stock up on food and other supplies, as well as buying Wickerman Festival-branded merchandise such as t-shirts as a souvenir of the fun you had while away.
All the action is overseen by a giant wickerman statue which is located near the main arena. At midnight on Saturday he will be set alight – don’t worry, it’ll be from a safe distance – which is sure to bring a memorable end to the fun you’ve had during this fantastic Scottish festival.

Baseball Hitting Drills For the Stride

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In our Hitting System, we practice striding during the following batting practice sequence:
o Soft body, no stride, full take
o Load and Stride – Take
o Load – Stride – Pivot
Isolating these three activities by themselves can be performed alone at home without a pitched ball, or during batting practice, like in our Hitting Agenda and Tempo Drills. This builds the stride to the point where it is constant. Here are the rules for the best stride:
o The stride travels only 6 inches.
o The stride lands on the ball of the foot
o The stride goes directly ahead and in the same place each time.
o The stride begins on pitchers release.
o The hands stay home near the back shoulder during the stride and are not released to make the bat contact the ball until after the pivot (rotation of the hips).
Another coaching point: The stride should be initiated in the large muscle mass of the hips. In other words, it is a slight linear push of the hips toward the ball. The front foot merely follows this push, landing on the ball of the foot. When the front heel goes down, this keys the turn of the hips and the weight transfer.
When facing a pitcher with above average velocity, a baseball player must be quick in the hips and rotate accordingly… having the ability to clear his mid section and allow his hands to get out in front makes for better contact with the ball. The stride plays a vital role in developing from linear to rotation for a sinker or four seam fastball for weight through the ball.
