I started with a Whisper 1hp pool pump. Integrated into that, I had an older ComPool system with solar water heating panels and an attached spa. The panels are on the roof about 30 feet above the level of the pool.

I integrated this new pump with the new easy-to-swap-out ComPool system upgrade. This allows nearly infinite control of the pump and the same features as the older ComPool system.

As a stand-alone pump, this pump is actually a 3HP pump, but can be set to any of four speeds. If coupled with a controller, it can be set to numerous different speeds as necessary such as a Cleaner speed, water feature speed, solar speed (for when the water can be heated through the panels), spa speed and a slow filtering speed. FYI, a traditional pump draws about 1000 watts (1kW) for each horsepower.

The new system is great. The new system allows virtually infinite control of the system. Coupled with the Compool system, you can set any speed in 10 rpm increments. It also allows you to see the status which will reveal its current speed and the number of watts it is using.

What this will do for your electricity bill: Dropping the speed down to 1/2 of max, the amount of electricity drops to 1/4 and proportionally so on.

And in CA, there are rebates available from your local utility company for installing this pump.

And I’d also buy the VS over the VF models. The VS is about 0 cheaper too…

I’ll post some typical wattage draws later on.

UPDATES:
Coupled with the controller: Another point I forgot to mention was this has a Priming feature (option) for each time the pump starts. This is important and very worthwhile for me. With my old pump, if it started and it was already hot enough to turn on the solar heating, it would immediately switch to this. Because of the long rise and the volume of water in the panels, many times it took 30 minutes or more for the pump to prime. With this priming feature, the pump primes before turning anything else on. If you did not have the controller, you would just set the pump to a different speed before it turned on any other features.

POWER USAGE UPDATES:
1500 rpm = 257 watts, used for just normal filtration (a huge savings over the 1000 watts the old pump pulled)
2500 rpm – 870 watts, speed for my pool cleaner
3100 rpm = 1519 watts (this is the speed I need for the solar panels, but only because the rise is so high)
