Is religion an addiction? What is the definition of addiction and if religion is an addiction; how does it work? What causes sane, intelligent people to succumb to the power of religion? What aspect of religion keeps people in the faith when their intellect is telling them to get out?

Definition: Psychological and bodily dependence on a substance or practice which is beyond voluntary control.

As I begin to write this I am forcing myself to type every letter. Something is compelling me to go one even in my reluctance; and I have never turned away from that inner voice. I still have the option of not publishing the article when it’s finished. I am always curious about the journey some of these articles take me. My step son operates a successful addiction treatment program, so this will give me an opportunity to do some bonding.

There is nothing that man does which is inherently right or wrong, these are religious concepts. However, given what man says he wants for himself and the world, there are some things that he does, which does not work for him. They take him the long way around. War, religion, and drugs are all addictions which effect humanities evolution and well being. There is nothing wrong with these things – they are physical manifestations of humanities thoughts about whom and what it is. However, his participation in them could be considered insanity if in the process of engaging in any of them, they do not take him to the experience of his own desires. In other words, if taking a pain killer does not relieve the pain, then it is insanity to continue using it unless you have become addicted.

I don’t really want to write about addiction, especially religious addiction. All of us have some kind of addiction. Television is the world’s number one addiction, followed by coffee and alcohol.

Much of the time my articles are written for just one person; this is one of those articles. I do not want to change the world, and drugs and religion are part of the physical experience. My only personal gain is to change my perspective of the world. The world is the way it is because it is how most people want it; otherwise it would be different. The world is also the way it is because religion is practiced by 84% of the world community, therefore people’s root thoughts will be influenced by it. What I know and what I must pass on here needs to be addressed to this person that I do not know. Others will also benefit from the awareness. My article is not about drugs, religion or addiction. It is really about empowerment. I want to empower people to take responsibility for the awesome power that they have to create the world they wish to experience. This article and all the other articles I write are about giving you an option to move away from the current mind set that you have that disempowers you.

For the record I am not against religion; I am against anything which inhibits man’s natural evolution; addictions do that. They disempower and create dependency. Dependency leads to exploitation and abuse. But even addiction can lead to something better, in fact once the addiction has been identified and treated; it most often leads to a better life experience.

There is a saying; “I cannot tell you my story, while you are busy telling me yours.” There is another one that I have made up. “I can not create my story while I am busy telling yours.”

While under the influence of an addiction, religion or drugs; you are not telling your story, you are telling the story of addiction. Your road and purpose will be cyclical, going around and around in circles until you have ended it one way or the other. While under the influence of a belief system, you are telling its story. A story which was told thousands of years ago, told and retold until it doesn’t even resemble the original story. A story which is so far out of date, it sucks you in, and keeps you locked in a time that goes nowhere. It is not possible to move to the next step while you are chained to the one you have just taken. Religion and drugs are regressive, each wanting to hold you in its control and to bring others under its power; addiction has a life of its own. Both religion and drugs are manifested or maintained by mind control – your mind out of control.

In my own story, I was raised in the Christian belief. As children we attended many different denominations. I was confirmed in the Anglican Church; I sang in the United Church choir, and had a girlfriend who happened to be a Pentecostal preacher’s daughter. Every one of them wanted to own me, they seduced, enticed and threatened; I was lucky to escape. The positive results of the experience were an increased awareness which brought me to this moment. It was one step leading to another with few scars. I consider myself very fortunate for having the experience. Religion has had its moment for me, some very positive. There is another expression; “Everything in moderation.” For most of us, a drink of alcohol will not kill us, but once you let it take control; you are lost. Attending any religious ceremony and learning about the faith will not lead you to dependency as long as you value your freedom and individuality more.

There is always the danger that in an unguarded moment you will move past the point of no return and surrender to the powerful seduction that is presented to you.

Whether it is the first drink or the first meeting, you must be clear in your mind what it is that you want to get from the experience. You must never let go of that thought. You are dealing with powerful forces and after a period of time, if you are not experiencing what you want, you must get out quickly. You must also keep in mind that your experience is now in this life. Everything that you experience must relate to this lifetime. Promises of an afterlife do you little good here and now. There is no way that you can ever prepare for something that you know nothing of. If you are taking the word of another or have faith in a religion to clarify this for you; you are making a huge sacrifice. Religions were made up (4-5 thousand of them exist today) by man. They are institutions which have their own agenda.

Religion and faith are chosen emotionally, not intellectually. People are motivated and kept in religion or faith by fear. If at anytime you consider changing your beliefs or deviate from its doctrine and you feel any sense of fear; you are addicted. Every addicted person believes they have control over their habit. They all say the same thing; that they can walk away from it at any time. In religion you are always damned if you do and damned if you don’t. You are always in fear of being damned. And because religion is all about emotion, not intellect, you will always be a prisoner of your emotions.

Using information that I have gathered from the internet, the latest data says that 84% of the world’s population is religious. This is the path most have chosen. So it is no wonder the world is the way it is today. Most of the population is influenced by religion; not yet ready to take the next evolutionary step. This current step in the influence of religion has lasted for thousands of years. Perhaps it is appropriate considering humanity moves very slowly in relationship to human lifecycles.

For the 16% of the population who are free; trying to change the minds of the majority is futile and a waste of time. The world does not have to be changed. It is your own personal perspective that needs changing. Each of us creates our own world and our personal circumstances. We are all free to do that, even while under the influence. The only thing the 16% can do for the rest is to demonstrate an alternative that works.

In my view, if you can demonstrate that what you believe in brings you all that you desire in your current physical life, then you have chosen well. Under the influence of addiction, many forget what they truly want and reverberate the perceived benefits of their addiction or the futility and despair that they now feel. The motivating feeling behind drug or religious addiction is the same; it’s fear.

It is sometimes frustrating for me to agree to help someone with an issue when I find that they are not willing to let go of the thought process that got them into the situation in the first place. What many people look for is immediate relief from a current situation, but for the most part it is a waste of time; theirs and mine. What good does it do to fix a wound caused by a dull, rusty knife, if you are not willing to get it sharpened before you use it again? To think that you can do the same thing over and over again using the same thoughts, and expect a different result, is the effect of an addiction to a defective mind set.

I recently received an email from someone I have been helping for several months. He has been chasing his tail trying to figure out why his circumstances won’t change for the better. I have given him all the information that he needs to begin to heal himself; but he continues with his search. He was aware enough to know that what he currently believed in was not helping him. So he started searching outside of his comfort zone to find the answers. Finally after all these months his email revealed why he is failing in his quest.

He wrote that he was not willing to let go of his current beliefs because they gave him structure and purpose. What a revelation; it is easier and more desirable (comfortable) to live within the limitations of one’s own thinking than to let go of it with uncertain results. It is all about fear; it is fear that is the crippling element of our own evolution to higher awareness and the power and responsibility that it brings with it.

The Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga was referred to as “the master of us all” said famed designer Christian Dior. Cristóbal in 1914 opened his first boutique is Spain and eventually Barcelona and Madrid. The royal family of Spain and the aristocrats were famed for wearing his designs, but he was forced to move to Paris when the Spanish Civil War broke out and he was forced to close stores.

In 1937 Cristóbal opened his couture house in Paris, his very first runway show was heavily influened by the Spanish Renaissance. Journalists who have reported the death of Krishna Kumar Sanyal, popularly known as Kanu Sanyal, couldn’t fail to describe two things. That he lived in a thatched two-room mud hut at Hatighisa village in Naxalbari where a worn out reed mattress and some plain rugs lay on the floor. His only other possessions were few books, clothes and utensils. The other thing they have noticed is the framed black and white portraits of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao that hung on the mud wall. This description is given to confirm the simple yet ideologically dedicated lifestyle of the legendary Naxal leader who has committed suicide on 23 March. For the last one year, the undisputed leader of the Naxalbari uprising was ailing after a brain hemorrhage and had become too feeble to move outside his home. But even so, he refused treatment from any government hospital in Kolkata. How could he approach the State when he is fighting it? – Kanubabu used to argue. “I was popular once,” he bitterly stated in one of his last interviews, “I have lost my popularity. I am unwell. That is the reason I cannot organize the masses anymore.” Former comrade-in-arms Azizul Haque believes that his suicide is symbolical – a protest against “the slaughter of innocent people in the villages in the name of Maoism and its counter-measures”. Kanubabu was known to be severely critical about the Maoists who often torture and kill poor and innocent villagers for refusing to join their movement or for turning against it. “In this respect, I do not approve of today’s Naxals,” was his sharp and clear remark. The reason behind his suicide remains an enigma. Did he take the extreme step because he could not bear the pain of his diseases anymore? Was he depressed and frustrated by the current form of revolutionary extremism in the country? We can speculate whatever we like but the real truth will never be known.

Charu Mazumdar, Kanu Sanyal and Jangal Santhal were the three famous leaders of the Naxalite rebellion that sparked off at Naxalbari on March 1967 when sharecroppers armed with conventional weapons rose in revolt against the local jotedars (landowners) and forcefully occupied farmland. On May 23, when a police force raided a troubled village in the area, armed peasants attacked them and killed a police Inspector. The police hit back two days later, by firing upon a crowd of villagers killing ten, including six women and two children. This event became a flashpoint and soon the movement spread like wildfire all over the land. Kanu Sanyal and Jangal Santhal were the grass-root leaders who practically led the Naxalbari peasant uprising. While the two were involved with the day-to-day struggle, trying to spread the movement among the peasants and mobilizing them, the 49-year old Charu Mazumdar who was basically an ideologue was providing the theoretical guidelines. At some point during the incidence, the idea of capturing State power through an armed struggle was born in Mazumdar’s mind as he perceived that “there was an excellent revolutionary situation in the country with all the classical symptoms”.

Mazumdar had even predicted that Indian people will complete “the great epic of liberation” by the end of 1975. How did he predict this specific time limit? In a speech published as “March Onward, Day of Victory is near” in the September-December, 1970 issue of the Naxalite mouthpiece Liberation, Mazumdar explicates: if the idea of armed struggle that had originated in his “revolutionary consciousness” in 1967 could seep into the minds of ten million people by 1970, “why is it impossible then for those 10 millions to rouse and mobilize 500 million people of India in a surging war by 1975?” A brilliant prediction indeed! Mazumdar’s argument sounds infantile and awful today but during those days his fiery clarion call to “Make the 70s the Decade of Revolution” found wide response among the youth, especially among college and university students from affluent families. Ignited by the “romanticism” of an armed revolution, they jumped into the revolutionary fray to pursue Charu Mazumdar’s mistaken dream. In May 1969, on the hundredth birth anniversary of Lenin, Kanu Sanyal formally announced the formation of CPI(ML) at a rally in Kolkata’s Shahid Minar.

In a 2007 interview, Mazumdar’s erstwhile lieutenant Kanu Sanyal passed a caustic remark to strongly counter the popular belief that Charu Mazumdar was instrumental in initiating the Naxalbari movement. “Charu Mazumdar was never directly attached to the Naxalbari Movement. When the Naxalbari uprising took place, Charuda was bedridden at his Siliguri home, with a severe heart ailment,” Kanubabu bluntly declared in that interview. He further went on to affirm that Mazumdar’s “role was limited to providing the philosophical base for the Naxalbari uprising”. (Source: resistanceindia.wordpress.com) According to Kanubabu, while all the grass-root leaders of the uprising including him were underground, the radical minded people who became excited by the news of the uprising and wanted to join the movement was only able to approach Charu Mazumdar since he lived in the adjoining town Siliguri and was easily accessible. Mazumdar’s infectious, unequivocal and sharp rhetoric promptly induced and convinced the radicals to fight for the great cause of liberation.

There was serious difference of opinion among the leaders on the strategy of armed struggle from the initial stage of the movement. Mazumdar propagated for instant armed struggle by forming small and mobile guerrilla units which will annihilate individual “class enemies” and take over the lands. Completely ignoring the need of mass movements or mass organizations to build up popular support, Mazumdar announced that “guerrilla struggle is the only form of class struggle” and annihilation was its “higher form”. He thought that the “actions” will instantaneously lit fire among the masses and awaken them to revolt against the system. Though leaders like Kanu Sanyal too believed in armed struggle, yet they stressed on building up mass movement involving the entire working class and peasantry as the primary task before forcefully taking possession of farmlands owned by big landlords. Deploring Mazumdar’s treatise of individual killing, Kanubabu later sarcastically said, “Charuda never missed the opportunity to preach his line of ‘individual terrorism’, labeling it as the spirit of the Naxalbari Movement.” He further argued that, “In a people’s movement, individual feeling, individual anger must first become crystallized for a people’s movement to succeed.” Armed revolution cannot be forced on the people if the objective conditions are not present.

Charu Mazumdar who coined the slogan “China’s Chairman is our Chairman” had even gone to the extent to proclaim that, “He who had not dipped his hand in the hands of class enemies can hardly be called a Communist”. Infatuated by Mazumdar’s incendiary ideas, the Naxalites went ahead to accomplish India’s liberation and started killing landowners, their associates and agents, money lenders, petty businessman and police informers. Initially, the strategy had borne some fruits. Due to the fear of getting killed by the Naxals, many from the oppressor class in the remote villages either fled or knelt down before them creating a power vacuum in the areas to fill by the “revolutionaries”. The Naxals loved to call those areas as “liberated zones”. In numerous cases individual murders were perpetrated by local criminal and lumpen elements those who had silently infiltrated among the Naxalite rank and file. The top Naxal leadership soon started to access the revolutionary triumph and its spread by the number of class enemies killed by them. Jubilant by this initial “success” in some small pockets of a vast country, Charu Mazumdar and his followers started exaggerating their so-called revolutionary achievement, completely underestimating the mighty State power and also the imminent white terror backlash perpetrated by armed goons of the Congress Party.

Mazumdar committed another serious blunder when he granting full sway to the Naxal action squads to plan and execute their own programmes. The squads started to function independently without any coordination between each other which intensified reckless violence and more bloodshed. Instead of creating confidence among the masses, Mazumdar’s erroneous strategy of revolutionary terror largely alienated the masses from the movement. Soon the State forces swung into aggressive action. Kanu Sanyal was captured along with 37 comrades by the police from his northern Bengal jungle hideout on August 1970. Charu Mazumdar was arrested in Kolkata on 16 July 1972. Twelve days later he died in police custody. The movement collapsed into shambles after being brutally crushed by a massive State repression called “Operation Steeplechase”.

Charu Mazumdar desired for an instant revolution – he was literally in too much hurry. His deteriorating health condition could be the vital reasons why the man became so frenetic to achieve the liberation of Indian masses by 1975. Whatever might be the reason, his ultra left-adventurism and revolutionary romanticism was primarily responsible for the heavy losses of precious lives within and outside the movement. Making a pointed attack on Charu Mazumdar’s tactical eccentricity, Kanubabu had stated, “…with arms in hand, youths tend to believe they can bring about a revolution by using bullets alone. But the reality is, they simply can’t. Without a solid mass base, all efforts will be futile.” In his later years, Kanubabu became an unabashed critic of the common perception that gun-culture is the ultimate identity of a communist revolutionary and continued to say that acts of terror can only damage popular movements and alienates the masses.

After his release from Visakhapatnam jail where he was imprisoned for seven years, Kanubabu took the initiative to form the Organizing Committee of Communist Revolutionaries (OCCR) to assimilate splinter Naxal groups. In May 1985, OCCR merged with the Communist Organization of India (Marxist-Leninist) . In June 2003 he formed a new CPI(ML) and kept his political activities confined in north Bengal region. Taking up local issues, he continued working quietly among the peasants and tea garden trade unions. Kanubabu was a severe critic of the Left Front government’s industrialization policy as he felt that the policy will only benefit the imperialists. He had also firmly voiced his opposition to the land acquisition methods in Singur and Nandigram. At the same time he was very much skeptical about Mamata Banerjee and the rainbow alliance led by her party, the Trinamool Congress. He had no doubt in his mind that the alliance “lacks the political will to work for the common people”. On a June 2009 interview Kanubabu had also spoken about his disapproval of the Lalgarh agitation. He considered the Lalgarh agitation “strictly an ethnic insurrection by the Adivasi community”. Condemning the Maoists for exploiting the Adivasis to carry forward their agenda of individual terrorism, he had thundered that, “Lalgarh is certainly not a Communist uprising”.

Since he had openly repudiated the ruthless violence of the neo-Naxals, popularly known as the Maoists, it is quite natural that their backers will consider Kanu Sanyal’s viewpoint as stale and redundant. A soft and lenient Kanubabu was indeed a disappointment for them in comparison to the fire eater Maoists. While Kanubabu lived and died inconspicuously in a remote north Bengal village and has certainly failed to develop into a “collector’s item”, the smart, crafty and “successful” Maoists have attracted the glossy attention of mainstream Indian media and ensured a high-profile, luxury position in it. The Maoist leadership and the neo-liberal media are equally comfortable when the image of a half-naked sexy model is presented next to the stunning image of a gun wielding grim faced Maoist women. For the Maoist leadership, it is free propaganda. For the media, both the images are sensational and thus a highly saleable commodity.

Highbrow intellectuals and celebrity activists who are singing the same tune to sanctify the Maoists and propagate their cause believes like Arundhati Roy that the noteworthy rebels are keeping “hope alive for us all” by creating “the possibilities for an alternative”. In a recent essay-cum-travelogue of her sponsored journey into the Maoists’ hotbed Dantewada, Arundhati Roy writes, “Charu Mazumdar was a visionary in much of what he wrote and said. The party he founded (and its many splinter groups) has kept the dream of revolution real and present in India. Imagine a society without that dream. For that alone, we cannot judge him too harshly.” She wonders if Charu Mazumdar could have ever imagined that the tribals turned Maoist cadres of Dantewada are “the ones on whose shoulders his dreams would come to rest”. Roy is fascinated by the “superbly organised, hugely motivated” Maoist guerrilla fighting force and its members, those who always carry “a weapon and a smile”. She writes emotionally about one Comrade Kamla who told her that she likes watching “Sirf ambush video (Only ambush videos).”

Roy even endorses a Maoists’ version of tribal history and shares it with her readers since in her warped “outlook” she measures the tribal people’s struggle for rights and the deceiving politics of the Maoists’ as equivalent. Her opposition to the government’s anti-Maoist offensive “Operation Green Hunt” leads her to bizarrely eulogize the total militarization of everyday tribal life, the killing of a village panchayat president because he was a “Tata’s man” and the Maoists’ Jan Adalat (kangaroo court) where they regularly try and execute their adversaries. Lionizing the ultra left movement, the believer Roy gets prompted to write, “Each time, they have re-emerged, more organised, more determined and more influential than ever”. Kanu Sanyal was counted out long before his mortal death; today’s neo-Naxals do not need a Charu Mazumdar either. And possibly they never really needed Mao! They just want apostles like Roy to spread their blood thirsty politics under the disguise of a noble intention.

History appears first time as tragedy, the second time as farce. It seems that an over-enthusiastic and obsessive Roy has completely forgotten this basic lesson.

Most worship leaders loosely subdivide church worship into 2 parts: Praise, nominally the faster, more lively section, and worship, the gentler, deeper, more heart wrenching section. This difference is very arbitrary and does not have to be catered to at all, but for the sake of this article, I am going to concentrate on the faster part of the worship service, the part known as “praise”. A later article will talk directly about the worship section.

I love to rock, but even more I love the deep songs which we tend to refer to as the area of worship leading, rather than praise leading. Even so, praise has it’s purpose, and if you’re intelligent about it, it can offer a lot of enjoyment, and become a amazing part of your worship leading.

Worship leaders, I challenge you, if you are in a church who would enjoy this (and not all are!), encourage physical activity to praise songs, things like clapping or actual movement of hands, feet and so on. In my church we have a guy who is intellectually challenged, and he’s a super sweet guy who loves action songs. So, when we start church with brisk songs (which we usually do), I will sometimes get Roy up on stage with the band to show the church how to do the actions.

So here’s some ideas from the worship leading manual I’ve written concerning praise.

How Much Praise?

Frequently I will do 1-3 praise songs. These tend to be lively, up tempo, rocky songs designed to be fun, full bodied expressions of love towards the Lord. Most people cannot dive straight in and worship the Lord deeply, so these songs give them a chance to just relax, enjoy and, hopefully, praise God with real rejoicing and passion.

Now, if your congregation is a screaming, chandelier swinging, Holy Ghost Revival Pentecostal church, full of stone deaf young rockers who love loud, heavy metal music, you may want to do a lot more loud praise songs.

Then again, you may be worship leading at a congregation that is gentle, stayed and full of over 80 year olds. In which case you may want to do only one moderately fast song and move straight into worship.

The main significance here is THINK ABOUT IT! Look at your church and ask, what do they enjoy? How can I serve them and fill them with joy, and how are they comfortable in showing it.

Then ask your pastor, asking his assessment and where he wants to go with the worship.

So, I encourage you to think about it, and above all, PRAY ABOUT WHICH SONGS GOD WANTS YOU TO DO!

I am definitely against formulas in worship leading (3 fast, 2 slow, etc.), and we worship leaders are really good at inventing the formula for success, often at the expense of whatever the Lord is doing.

Formulas can be beneficial, but don’t get stuck there.

I loved Janet the moment I saw her. I was fourteen, hurling footballs in the park, when she walked up with my friends. She was new, just arrived from California. She needed help adjusting to the East Coast, and I was the perfect person to help her.

We started out as friends. I introduced her to the local hang-outs….Roy‘s Pizza Parlor, Amy’s Donut Shop, and the parks, where my friends liked to go. Janet was fun. She brought out the silly side of myself. She loved to feed the ducks, and I loved to chase her, around the large pond at Brandy Lake. She loved to ice skate, and I loved the rougher, sport of snow sledding, so we did both. Janet’s family always had the hot chocolate ready, after a heady, winter’s afternoon, with Janet.

Things changed when Janet and I first kissed, behind the bleachers at a basketball game. I felt my life spin out of control. when her soft lips met mine, the smell of her jasmine perfume, heating me with a tropical warmth, I’d never felt before. After that, all I could think of, was Janet…. Janet in the morning, Janet at lunch, and Janet before I fell asleep.

By the time I got to tenth grade, Janet accepted my ring. Everyone knew she was my girl. Janet and I were inseparable. We sought ways to be alone. Running around the lake, wasn’t as much fun, as steaming up the car windows with her. She was warm and soft, and she was mine.

By the time we were both eighteen, we were engaged. Our parents were disappointed, but there was nothing they could do. We got married on my nineteeth birthday, on the lawn of my Aunt’s lakeside house. It was a beautiful ceremony. It was the happiest day of my life.

Janet and I got along for the first twelve years of our marriage. Three children later, and a job that barely supported the family, and the stress started to crack our marriage. When our house mortgage fell behind, Janet and I argued. The arguing turned into constant bickering. Janet packed up the children and moved to her mother’s house, several times. The last time she moved, she stayed. She refused to come home.

The divorce was simple. There was nothing to divide. Janet was good about sharing the kids. I wasn’t bitter, just empty, where Janet had been. After a few years, the emptiness became numbness, like a scab forming over a wound. I walked around dazed for a few years, trying to make my life better. I returned to college, and got a good trade, so I could start my own business. I started to do well.

I was lonely. My friends wanted to fix me up. I tried a couple of blind dates, but I was surprised, to find myself comparing my dates to Janet. Nothing worked. I decided to see a counselor.

My counselor, Dr Adams, was a wise and compassionate person. He let me talk about Janet over and over. Finally, after the third session, he told me that I had built my life around her, and in many ways, my life had become dismantled when she left. He told me it was good I did not become an alcoholic or drug addict, as many divorced people did. Dr. Adams said I showed inner strength, by going back to school, and trying to better myself, instead.

Dr. Adams told me that accepting blind dates was putting pressure on myself, and my dates. It was natural, after such a long relationship with Janet, to compare her with other women. He said many people, who lost their wifes or husbands prematurely, tend to do the same thing. As a result, they have difficulty being intimate with others.

Dr. Adams helped me the most, by letting me realize, that a first love is a special love, and as such, it deserves to remain in one’s heart. However, other relationships have good things to offer, too. For instance, compatibility ranks higher in relationships formed later in life. Companionship becomes the main attraction, and great partnerships, are formed as a result. Dr. Adams taught me a lot.

I looked back to the fun that first drew Janet and me together. It’s true, we stopped enjoying each other’s ocmpany over time. While I continued to love sports and the outdoors, Janet didn’t. With the passing of time, she preferred books, and crafts projects, indoors. She stopped going out on cold winter days.

Dr. Adams helped me take post-divorce, baby steps, towards meeting other women. He said dates put too much pressure on me, so I took his advice, and joined a club. My counseling ended, when I stepped out and made new friends. As Dr. Adams told me, it was important to mourn the loss of a marriage, but it was also important to move forward.

My first trip with the ski club was fun. There were more men than women, but what a great group of people. We skiied, and afterwards, the club had dinner and drinks together, before we boarded the bus home. We laughed the entire way home.

On my next ski trip, I met a couple of new women. They were athletic and fun. I took a few more ski trips, and by my third trip, Anne was becoming a close friend.

Anne loved sports. She invited me to her volleyball match at Sexton Hall, a community sports club in the local area. I enjoyed watching her play. She was competetive and sharp. I realized she was like me. Perhaps, that’s why we felt easy with each other. I didn’t have to explain myself to her.

Anne and I decided to get married, after we took our first trip together. We drove to Indianapolis to see the Indy 500. It was a great time. I decided she was worth keeping in my life.

Our wedding was small. I didn’t want to get married in the same town where I married Janet.

Anne and I decided to get married in Europe. Only a few family members showed up, but it was exciting. Anne had a way of making simple things daring. We toured through nine European countries for our honeymoon. We camped the entire time. Once we took a hot air balloon ride, in the south of France.

I don’t have the flame- throwing relationship with Anne, that I had with Janet. Yes, I do still think of Janet, sometimes more than I should. But I can say this: I am peaceful with Anne, in a way I never was with Janet. Anne and I can go anywhere together and have a great time. We go long periods without talking, we can just be together. It’s almost like she’s another part of me.

Looking back, I am glad, I did not jump into relationships after my divorce. Some of my friends did, and they have gotten divorced again. Some of them drink too much now. It’s sad to see. As Dr. Adams told me, after divorce, you have to treat yourself better, not worse. Divorce is hard, but it’s also an opportunity, to get to form the relationship with yourself, that might have been missing. When you are missing a relationship with yourself, you put too much pressure on your partner, to recognize who you are.

Janet has become a sweet memory for me. If we hadn’t parted, I probably never would have gone back to college. I’m making more money, I have new friends, and Anne and I are still in the ski club. We’ve got a great social life, and we go a lot of places. Life coudn’t be better.

As for Janet, she’s been a good mother. She started a preschool. She stays at home, which is her favorite place to be. Nothing wrong with that. She’s doing well, and I’m glad for her. However, I can’t imagine a life without Anne. It took me getting to know myself, after the divorce, to be able to find her.
