Tracing the Roots of Photography

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you a photographer or you aspiring to be one? These days, it’s rather easy to back your technical skills with research. The Internet can make many things happen for you. You can even use it to connect to some of the country’s most famous photographers. You can even be very specific when searching for information. For example, if you’re planning to learn wedding photography, you can simply type in the search box keywords such as ” Portland wedding photographers “. But before you go too technical with your search, you may want to know just how or where this hobby of yours, which you may even be considering to do professionally, originated.

You probably think you know photography inside out, but did you ever have an idea how it came about? The word, photography, was derived from the Greek words photos, meaning “light” and graphein meaning “to draw”. It was first used by a scientist named Sir John F. W. Herschel in 1839. In the 19th century, an Arab scientist by the name of Ibn al-Haithem, known in the west as Alhazen and considered father of modern optics, attempted to discover the rate of light and how it passed through objects. He eventually invented the very first pinhole camera, also known as the camera obscura, with an explanation on why the images were upside down. The first photographic image made with a camera obscura was by Frenchman Joseph Nicephore Niepce on a summer day in 1827. Niepce’s heliographs were the prototype for the modern photograph that was driven by letting light draw the picture.

Another Frenchman, Louise Daguerre, soon experimented on capturing an image, but it took him another dozen year before he was able to reduce the exposure time to less than half a minute and keep the image from disappearing. For the birth of modern photography In 1829, Louise Daguerre formed a partnership with Joseph Nicephore Niepce to improve the process Joseph had developed. After a long year of experimentation and Niepce’s death in the year 1839, Daguerre developed an easier and more effective way of photography and named it after him – daguerreotype.

The first negative was invented by Henry Fox Talbot, a botanist from England who was a mathematician and a contemporary of Daguerre. Talbot did sensitized paper to light with a silver salt solution. He then put the paper under a light. The background turned black, and the subject was rendered in gradations of gray. Talbot then made contact prints, reversing the light and shadows to create a vivid picture.

Another brilliant invention were the wet plate negatives discovered in the year 1851 by an English sculptor named Frederick Scoff Archer. With a flammable solution named collodion, he coated a piece of glass with light-sensitive silver salts. This wet plate created a more stable and detailed negative because it was completely transparent unlike paper. Dry plate negatives and hand-held cameras came in the year 1879 along with a glass negative plate with a dried gelatin emulsion. The dry plates can be stored for a period of time. Dry processes absorbed light more quickly so rapidly that a handheld camera was now possible.

In the year 1889, flexible roll film was invented by a man named George Eastman. This new kind of film was unbreakable and could be rolled. Emulsions coated on a cellulose nitrate film base made the mass-produced box camera a reality.

In the early 1940s, the world was delighted to view their first first colored photographs that came with commercially produced color films. This then new age in photography involved dye-coupled colors with a chemical process connecting three layers of dye to make an visible color image.

If you’re just learning photography, you’re in luck as it has become more convenient and extensive, allowing you fully explore your talent in whatever specialty you may want to pursue. Whether you want to be a Portland portrait photographer or a landscape, family, baby or event specialist, you have all the possible resource right at your fingertips. As always, online is a great place to look.

Folgers Coffee – The History and Background of the Folgers Coffee Company

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Part of Proctor and Gamble, Folgers Coffee is one of the biggest brands of coffee in America today. Founded in the 19th century in San Francisco, California by J.A. Folger, it took the United States (the largest coffee market in the world) by storm. In 1963, Proctor and Gamble acquired the company.

There are eight types (called families) of Folgers in America today: Cafe Coffees, Coffee Pods, Instant Coffees, Gourmet Selections, Flavored Coffee (Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Chocolate Silk and Cinnamon), Simply Smooth, Coffeehouse Series and Classic Roast. In Canada, Folgers coffee is limited to Classic Roast and Mountain Roast.

Quite possibly the most catchy thing about the brand is the commercials it ran. The well known slogan “the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” resonated well with audiences and boosted sales.

Other popular television ad campaigns featured people sneaking in to four-star restaurants and replacing the expensive coffee that customers are used to drinking with Folgers Crystals. Not surprisingly, nobody could ever tell that the expensive coffee had been replaced with the cheaper instant version.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Folgers started experimenting with less traditional advertising, sponsoring NASCAR racing. By sponsoring popular drivers, it was almost as though NASCAR itself was endorsing the brand, and the ad campaign was fairly successful.

In 2006, yet another untraditional ad campaign was launched through viral marketing. Created by the ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi, the ads known as ìhappy morningsî were seen all over YouTube and various weblogs. In the ads, cheery and happy singers and dancers show up at sunrise to wake people up to greet the day.

Dateline NBC held a taste test of most popular brands of coffee, and in their experiment Folgers Classic roast scored last place.

Our Financial Roots Create Our Financial Fruits

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you ever noticed that when a millionaire loses their money they generally have it back in a veral years ago he lost everything. Two years later, he had it all back again and more. What was hisvery short period of time? Why is that? Donald Trump is a prime example. Se secret? Even though he lost everything, he did not lose the most important ingredient to his success, which is his mind. Do you think that Donald Trump would be happy to simply have a million dollars. I don’t think so. He’d feel poor. The reason for that is that his financial thermostat is set for billions and he won’t settle for less than that. Many of us have our financial thermostat set for thousands not millions, hundreds not thousands and some people have their thermostat set below zero.

What determines where our financial thermostat is set? In the book, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind – Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth”, T. Harv Eker states that it come from our “inner world”. When we blend our inner game with the outer strategies, people get results that will take them through the roof.

Most people don’t reach their full potential. They never become financially free the way they want and a lot of people never claim to be truly happy. The reason is that most of us live unconsciously based only on the physical world, the world we see. However, we actually live in four different worlds at once. We live in our inner worlds – mental, emotional and spiritual. These are our roots. The outer world – the physical or material world are actually our fruits or results. The physical world is a printout of the other three. Just as with a fruit tree, it is the roots that are grown below the ground that create the fruits that are above the ground. If we don’t like the fruits of our life, then the roots are the solution.

To clarify, everything in the outer world is a result. Wealth is a result. Poverty is a result. Health is a result. Illness is a result. Friends are a result. Loneliness is a result. Whatever you have in your life is a result of your inner world. The only way to permanently change your results is to change your mind. In order for any of us to truly build a successful life, it’s an inside job!

Synchronicity – The Roots of Coincidence

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Coincidence is where two or more unrelated things seem to occur in close enough proximity to suggest some relationship between them. Eg you dream of a school friend you haven’t heard from for years only to get a reunion invitation from that same person next day.

Between getting the idea for this post and actually writing it a friend told me of two instances when people she hadn’t seen for ages came into her mind. The first she ran into on the street next day, and the second happened to be on the TV when she walked into the next room! And, on the day I posted this, I happened to be flicking through the TV channels and started watching an old series (of about 80 episodes). Bizarrely the episode being shown was the same that I happened upon over 4 years ago also by channel-flicking. I don’t follow this series and don’t recall having watched it inbetween times. Coincidence, or what?

We all experience coincidences. And quite often they send a little shiver down our spine as though signaling some greater hidden force is at work.

But before getting too carried away, let’s make it clear – coincidence happens as a fact of nature. For example, if you continually roll two dice, once in six they will come up with the same number. Nothing spooky about that. Coincidences are significant only when they occur more frequently that chance suggests they should.

The great Swiss psychologist C.G. Jung coined the term synchronicity to describe “temporally coincident occurrences of acausal events”, ie coincidence. Jung ascribed the phenomenon to some “acausal connecting principle”, ie he postulates some greater, unseen, reality having a direct effect on earthly events.

When we are born, a small part of Spirit associates itself with our physical body. But while incarnate the knowledge of our Spiritual nature is buried deep within. Our focus needs to be on earthly matters both to survive, and to fulfill our purpose in being here.

But we remain Spirit; and occasionally we glimpse evidence of that reality. Like us, the physical universe manifests from Spirit and remains subordinate to Spirit. Largely it operates deterministically, but within that apparent determinism lie clues to the existence of a greater reality.

It’s a bit like we’re puppets (albeit with our own Will) in a puppet theatre. We make our moves and observe the moves of others, but remain unaware of the hidden (Spiritual) force that is pulling the strings save for the occasional glimpse of its influence. Perhaps part of our role in this life is to rediscover our Spiritual essence after having it hidden from us. Coincidence provides but one signpost along that journey.

Documents of the Christian Church

Documents of the Christian Church never got the book for my class it’s now week 5 of 8 – letjr – philadelphia, pa
never buy books from balacingmind. They claim the book arrived it didn’t and I never heard back from them or amazon since my claim was filed.
Basic survey of major documents – Brian Parker – Virginia
Handy text for a survey of Early Christian Documents. To use this you need to have a knowledge of the period and document/author you are looking for. Helpful in addition to other Church History books, which provide some of the background to the letters.
: Since its first publication in 1967, this collection of writings from the most important moments in the history of Christianity has established itself as a classic work. Now incorporating a wealth of new material, this new edition will be an essential reference source for anyone interested in the history of the Christian Church.

While retaining the original material selected by Henry Bettenson, Chris Maunder has added a substantial section of more recent writings. These new entries illustrate the Second Vatican Council; the theologies of liberation; Church and State from ‘Thatcher’s Britain’ to Communist Eastern Europe; Black, feminist, and ecological theology; ecumenism; and inter-faith dialogue. The emphasis on moral debate in the contemporary Churches is reflected in selections dealing with modern issues such as homosexuality, divorce, AIDS, and in-vitro fertilization. With the publication of this new edition, Documents of the Christian Church provides insights into the whole 2000 years of Christian theological and political debate.
