.NET Internationalization: The Developer’s Guide to Building Global Windows and Web Applications
Awesome – Dave A – Australia
This is actually one of the best technical books that I have read in a long time. It is to the point, it does not reiterate, it is well considered in its structure and it elegantly covers the topic from the beginner to the advanced.

Don’t Neglect Squint Eyes
Squint eyes over the years have been looked upon as a black spot
on the human beauty. Nevertheless, it has been posing the
prospective brides with innumerable problems in matters of
matrimony. However of a beauty she might be, one look at her
eyes the boy turns her down. Such boys do not care to probe
whether squint eyes can be set right.
Sometimes, on the other hand, people with squint are considered
lucky in the society. But the Ophthalmologists who know the
consequences of squint, do not think so. On the contrary, they
stress the disadvantages and negative aspects of squints- as
outlined below.
The two eyes normally should be in a definite visual axis.
A manifest deviation of the visual axis of either eye is known
as squint or strabismus. So one eye is deviating or squinting,
the other eye takes up the visual function mainly. So it
becomes a dominate eye. Most of the time, the deviating eye
slowly becomes impaired functionally. Later it almost becomes
blind. This hard fact will not be known to the squinting person
unless he closes the good eye and tests for the other eye vision.
When the degree of squint is gross, it is very easy to recognise
that. But when there is a small amount of squint, various tests
have to be done to diagnose correctly the type and amount and
presence of squint.
Mainly there are two types of squint -paralytic and non-paralytic.
There are seven small muscles around each eye-ball, which are
responsible for the various movements of the eye. These muscles
are supplied by 3rd,4th, and 6th cranial nerves- which are derived
from the brain.
Whenever these nerves become weak or lose their conducting
capacity, the respective eye muscles become immobile. So when
the other normal eye moves in a particular direction, if the
affected eye cannot move in the same direction, squint becomes
evident which is a paralytic squint.
Non- paralytic or concomitant deviations are for the most part,
produced by anomalies of the power of convergence and divergence
and the co-ordinated use of the two eyes to obtain binocular
single vision. In these cases the amount and character of the
deviation does not vary when the eyes are turned to the right
or left.
Before going to the causes of squint, it is necessary to know
the necessity of two eyes. It is the fact that when we observe a
single object with both the eyes we see it as a single object
instead of two. Obviously one may ask -what is the necessity of
having two eyes? Even if one becomes blind, the other one can
function normally – one may think.
One eye is always complement to the other eye. When we see
with both eyes, the extent or field of vision is definitely wider
than with one eye. Moreover, two eyes are necessary to have
what we call as ” BINOCULAR SINGLE VISION” the important
aspect of this being depth perception. There are 3 stages in this
binocular single vision.
1. Simultaneous perception.
2. Fusion.
3. Steriopsis ( the one which gives the sense of depth )
The development of reflexes concerning the binocular single
vision and the movements of eye muscles – are not complete
until the child is 5 years. Usually this will be established
when the child becomes 8 years old. So any disturbances during
this period ( below 5years ) may hamper the relation between the
movement of the two eyes and may cause a squint.
Causes of Squint :
1. Accommodation and convergence anomalies.
2. Refractive errors.
3. Weakness in the nerves supplying the eye muscles.
4. The gross difference in the vision between 2 eyes
due to any reason.
5. Patching or closing of one eye for a prolonged period.
6. Defect in the development of the nerves between retina
and the brain.
7. Hereditary and genetic or familial causes.
Clinically, there are two types of squints – Convergent Squint-
when one or both eyes are turned in, and Divergent Squint -
when one eye is turned outside the normal visual axis.
Treatment :
No case of squint can be said to be ‘cured’ unless, in addition
to normality of appearance, there is restoration of binocular
single vision in all circumstances. Although the latter cannot
be achieved in every case, a satisfactory cosmetic result can
invariably be obtained by means of operation or surgery.
In a case of squint there may be three possible defects of
function which have to be remedied:
1. The loss of normal function of the squinting eye. This
may not only concerns visual acuity but also visual
localisation.
2. The loss of normal binocular function.
3. The physical deformity caused by the deviation of the
visual axis. This is the defect which attracts the attention of
parents but is the least important from the point of view
of visual function.
To give complete treatment, child should be between 6 and
8 years. So the parents and school teachers have a very
important role to play. They should subject these squinting
children for treatment at the earliest. Because any treatment
or surgical correction done after the age of 8 years is not
complete or perfect because then we can only correct the
physical deformity but we cannot get the very important
functional part of it i.e. binocular single vision. So most of
the time in persons who are treated for squint after the age
of 8 years, one eye would be stronger, other eye would be
weaker. They will not have binocular single vision – which
can give them the exact form and depth perception.
The methods of treatment:
1. Correcting the refractive errors – by glasses whenever
refractive error is found to be the cause of squint.
2. Deliberate occlusion or patching of the fixing eye so as
to improve the vision of the squinting eye.
3. By special type of (orthoptic ) exercises in order to
improve the binocular faculties.
4. By operation or surgery – to restore parallelism of the
visual axis.
One or more of these methods or all four may be needed in any individual
case.
Finally it is the dire responsibility of the parents and the
teachers to detect this malady, which renders their children
look ugly in the eyes, during the tender age of 6 to 8 years
lest it is practically impossible to develop a squintless society.

Brake Vibration
On a number of newer vehicles these days there is a concern regarding brake pulsation, there may be those of you who have experienced this problem, when you knew the vehicle may stop smoothly. It is later perhaps when you have driven a several thousand kilometers the brake pedal begins to pulsate during braking.
The brakes, for instance, may seem as though they are grabbing and releasing and to stop smoothly is impossible. The problem may have arisen following the removal of the wheels. This was virtually unheard of in the late 70′s and 80′s and you may ask why it happens now.
It is all to do with the weight. The idea is that by increasing the fuel efficiency in new cars, this will help to decrease manufacturing costs, so the accounts department or “bean counters” as they are sometimes referred to, tries to ensure that each part of a vehicle is reduced in weight as much as possible.
This may sound fine and for the majority of parts, it works well. But a brake system engineer may say that for brake rotors, heavier is better. The heavier the brake rotors the more heat they absorb fading less giving a better braking performance, are more stable and rarely warp as this is a cause of pulsating brakes.
Brake engineers may sometimes get their own way. Unfortunately, it is the accountants that win and brake rotors are built to weigh less. Then the problems may start. It is possible to make brake rotors that are light, stable and powerful.
On racing cars carbon fiber/ceramic rotors can be obtained and used, but for the average passenger vehicle the cost would be too high. The Porsche 911 Turbo model offers a higher performance brake option, and stops in an amazingly short distance with its stock brake system.
Many are stuck using standard cast brake rotors. But if these aren’t handled properly, they will warp and then it’s the start of pulsating brakes. When the rotor becomes warped, it wears from side to side unevenly, causing it to rub against the brake pads. Eventually, the sides of the rotor cannot remain parallel to each other any longer.
Tolerances for parallelism quite often are less than 0005 inch maximum or for example ¼ of a hair’s thickness. If rotor sides aren’t parallel, this will cause the pistons in the brake calipers to make the brake pads push in and out at a rapid pace. It is this fast motion being transmitted via the break system into the pedal that you feel as a pulsation.
Something as simple as changing a tire can cause rotor warpage. For instance, when changing the tire, if there is rust, dirt or corrosion in-between the wheel and the brake rotor when putting it back, it will be clamped unevenly and this can cause the rotor to warp.
When tightening wheel nuts, care has to be taken. If tightened incorrectly, this can also warp the rotor. It is far better when fitting a wheel to tighten the wheel nuts in two stages by doing an alternating in a criss-cross pattern. On modern vehicles a torque wrench is critical; there are some wheel shops that tighten the nuts using air impacts.
Torque sticks are used by many as these are designed to limit the torque on nuts. Neither one is sufficiently accurate for today’s modern cars. Try to make sure that a torque wrench is used. Any brake pulsations after the wheel has been changed may mean having to loosen the wheel nuts and re-torque. This is best done sooner rather than later and the rotor will normally correct itself, leaving it longer may result in it staying warped.
Brake rotor run-out can also be a cause of pulsing brakes. There are many manufacturers that allow a rotor and hub to wobble up to 003 inch due to machine tolerances and it will wobble too much, acting as though it has warped. There are cars that are sensitive to rotor run-out if more than 001 inch, which will cause brake pulsations will occur.
Probably it is better to correct a run-out to less than 001 inch. An answer to this is to machine rotors in their place whilse on the car rather than using the off-car brake lathes that most workshops use, this way run-out for both rotor and hub will be corrected. It is due to the cost of these machines that many repair shops unfortunately don’t have one.
It is better to take certain steps in trying to prevent or correct brake pulsations, mounting surfaces should be kept clean, if machining rotors make sure sides are parallel, rotor run-out should be kept to a minimum, to torque wheel nuts always maintain to use the proper procedure, hopefully brake pulsations will be in the past for your vehicle.

Tips To Improve Your Writing Skill

Image : http://www.flickr.com
If you have a good writing skill then it can be very useful at times. How to improve your writing skill depends upon your motivation. If you feel that you can never reap a good writing skill then you are wrong. Everyone can accomplish quality writing skill if they try it. There are many grounds why you would want to learn how to improve your writing expertise.
Some of you might do it as a passion and some of you for the money. Reason may be whatever; you should have the proper motivation to write well. Only the precise motivation can send you on the right path. Here are some helpful tips to get better writing skills.
First of all you need to learn how to open your mind more. One of the obstruction in good quality writing starts with the expansion of ideas. For this to grow you have to write something each day. If you practice it daily then you will gain something and this is very true in the key of writing. If you want to learn how to improve your writing skill then you must put off your ‘editor’ side for a moment. When you are trying to generate a new material of writing and at the same time offensive ideas are coming in your mind then try to be more open in that case. A good writer is one who moved out of this and has brought in his more innovative side.
You can do brainstorming exercises, if you feel it hard to opening up your mind a bit. This can be done about certain topic. Attempt to think of words and images that come out from your mind while thinking about the topic. Make a listing of everything. Abstain from not including an image or a word just because you feel that it is too contemptible. Let your mind go released instead. Doing this simple exercise you can help yourself to open up your mind.
While writing, follow some basic rules like sequence of tenses, parallelism etc. Anything we write, usually it has some reason and starting point. Always keep in mind that once something is in written form then it can not be taken back. After writing the matter allow it to be read by a critic. If you are just writing something and not showing it to someone to read then you will not be able to spot your mistakes. Once you have written the article, make a habit of proofreading. Even when you think that whatever is written is correct or is exactly what you want, read it thrice.
Here are some basic tips to remember:
1. Avoid using jargon words.
2. Do not use abbreviations.
3. Take care about the spelling of the names of people.
4. Keep sentences short.
5. Use simple language.
6. Never try to use a huge vocabulary you have, this may confuse your reader.
7. Avoid using clichés.
Initially you might think that your writing contains a lot of errors, but it’s just a part of the process. You are going to learn from these mistakes. Your writing will gradually improve as you go on doing practice.
