Maybe you take espresso for granted as a modern pleasure, but this drink has been around for a long time. The biggest difference is how easy it is to make today. You can still use the old-fashioned methods, but when choosing how to make espresso, you have lots of choice.

Social Drink:

When deciding how to make espresso, consider the social nature of this drink. Before technology made the steaming and frothing processes so quick and easy to use at home, making this elegant drink took time, sometimes more than it was worth. Creating an espresso had to be special. Now, coffee houses enjoy the profits of its popularity and versatility. Still, anyone can make espresso at home without the expertise of a coffee house server.

Old-fashioned:

If you can find a hot plate, your stove-top espresso maker can go with you even on a camping trip. Go for all steel, aluminium or even a glass-topped model. Some models even let you make frothed milk. Styles vary from streamlined to more of a kettle shape.

Domestic Appliance:

An electric model may have a cord, but the result is faster and requires less attention. Consider models which suit your decor and space allowance as well as lifespan. Spending a bit more will get you a better machine. Electric models often feature such things as a warming plate and the option to make other kinds of drinks with your machine such as specialty teas.

Coffee Shop:

A busy coffee house still wants an efficient, tidy machine built to fit in the available space. Some commercial machines come in a wide format, others are tall and narrow. Tank capacity varies too. Rank the popularity of espresso in your establishment to assess what you need.

Glass Press:

No steam, buttons or electronics will contribute to the making of espresso in a French Press. You will, however, enjoy the benefit of a small appliance useful for making regular coffee too. A press is easy to clean and put away when you are done. Just use the press as you normally would changing only the product you put in it.

Additional Pieces:

To help you choose which espresso maker to buy, consider the extras you want from your machine, if any. A lift tray makes cleaning the drips easier. Barista tools might include instructions and materials for making designs on your froth. Considering the strength of espresso, you may want to find some small cups which stop you from drinking as much espresso as you would normal coffee.

Recipes:

Change the style of your coffee by adding a few ingredients. Mocha provides just one variety. Others include after-dinner coffees with liqueurs. Enjoy espresso beans covered in chocolate, or make ice cream with the rich flavor of this special coffee.

Next, find out more about how to make espresso and how to choose the right type of automatic espresso machine for your needs.

Espresso Coffee – How to Make an Excellent Espresso at Home

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Espresso is strongly brewed coffee made by forcing steam and hot water

through darkly roasted and finely ground coffee beans. The aroma of

espresso makes it especially hard for many coffee lovers to resist.

Coffee aficionados the world over know that a shot of excellent

espresso is crucial to making a good cup of coffee. There are a

variety of espresso machines in the market that can produce great

tasting espresso.

So how do you make a great cup of espresso? Here are the basic steps:

1. Remove coffee ground residue of the previous shot in the shot

holder before using the espresso machine to make a new cup of

espresso.

2. Have adequate ground coffee ready and place it in the grinder hopper.

3. Release seven grams of the ground coffee into the shot holder,

making sure that you get a full pull as you do so.

4. Using a hand tamper, even out the coffee grounds. Tamp only once

and do not twist the tamper as you tamp the coffee grounds. By doing

this, you are assured that the hot water and steam will evenly extract

the coffee. You can also correctly gauge the pressure if you use a

hand held tamper to pack down the coffee grounds as well as remove

excess coffee grounds from the shot holder.

5. Secure the shot holder in place and lock the espresso machine

handle so that water does not leak as it passes through the coffee

grounds at a high pressure.

6. Position a warmed up espresso cup under the the espresso machine’s

coffee holder spout. Start the espresso machine. Keep an eye on the

the color and consistency of the brew coming out of the spout. In 15

to 20 seconds, you should have about 1.5 ounces of freshly brewed

espresso in the cup.

Making a well-brewed cup of espresso does take time and practice. The

presence of a creamy honey-colored foam called crema that is about a

quarter of an inch thick sitting on the coffee’s surface is a sign

that you have successfully made an excellent cup of espresso. And if a

teaspoon of sugar can rest on the crema, you can probably consider

yourself an espresso guru!

The crema is the result of several important factors: the coffee

blend, fineness of the coffee ground, extraction time, water

temperature and amount of coffee used. You achieve a perfect cup of

espresso every time if you can consistently attain an optimum mix of

these factors.

* Most espresso aficionados will agree that the coffee blend should

include some Robusta beans.

* Several reasons could account for a dark color of crema: too much

coffee grounds may have been used; the coffee grounds were packed too

hard and too tightly in the shot holder, resulting to a longer

extraction time of the coffee; the coffee grounds used was too fine;

or too much water was used.

* There are several reasons, too, for less crema: the coffee used may

not have been enough; the time it took to extract the coffee may have

been too short since the coffee used was coarsely ground; there was

not enough water to pass through the coffee; the coffee grounds were

packed too lightly in the shot holder; or the water that passed

through the coffee was not hot enough.

* If the espresso machine, shot holder or cup is cold, it may affect

the amount of crema produced.

Espresso can be served as it comes out of the espresso machine or it

can be served in a variety of ways. In fact, many of the specialty

coffee drinks today has espresso as their base. Some of the specialty

coffee drinks that have a shot of espresso include macchiato (espresso

topped with foamed milk), espresso con panna (espresso topped with

whipped cream), cappuccino (espresso with milk and foam), café latte

(espresso with milk, but without the foam), mocha (espresso blended

with milk and chocolate syrup) and Americano (a “weakened” espresso

made by adding warm water).

Coffee With Chicory

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I recently tasted New Orleans Chicory Blend coffee for the first time. I’d read about it in historical fiction books and was always curious about it. So when this opportunity arose, I thought I’d see what it was all about.

My first question was, “What is chicory?”

Chicory is a perennial bushy herb; it is the common name for curly endive. It is part of the dandelion family. While the leaves are used in salads, it is the root of the plant that is mixed with dark roast coffee. The root needs to dried, roasted, and ground. When brewed, it becomes syrupy and bitter and tastes nothing like coffee.

Now my next question is, “Why use it?”

The Germans began using chicory as a coffee substitute in the 18th century to avoid the tax on foreign luxury items. Napoleon had a plan to make Europe self-sufficient; the best substitute the French could find for coffee (because it is not widely grown in Europe, if at all) was chicory. After Napoleon’s demise, most French people went back to drinking coffee, but some never lost their taste for chicory. It was the French settlers that brought chicory to the southern United States. Chicory has been used widely in the United States to “stretch” coffee when coffee and money are scarce.

And my third question: “What does it taste like?”

New Orleans Chicory Blend is usually made with a dark roast coffee and chicory. This American coffee has an earthy, sweet aroma. It is full-bodied with a fair amount of acidity. I found the flavor to be a bit bitter. But I suppose the end result would depend on just how much chicory is used. (The standard ratio is 2 parts coffee to 1 part chicory).

Chicory has no caffeine, so if you’re watching your caffeine intake, but don’t like decaffeinated coffee, adding chicory may be an option for you.

Diena Zavetsky became enamored with gourmet coffee during her college years.

She is the owner of Hot Gourmet Coffee, where the coffee gourmet can buy coffee online. Coffees are available in whole bean, drip grind, espresso grind, and French press.

What is So Good About Keurig B100?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Keurig b100 might not seem like anything special to you, it looks just like a single serve coffee maker. But, this is no ordinary machine; this is the one that propelled the brand into what it is today.

This model is the first keurig coffee maker to be rolled out and is the one that help the brand capture market share and established itself as one of the key players in the coffee industry. Currently, it is among the top three brands in the single serve segment, and in terms of market share, it is second, after Senseo but more than Tassimo.

And it is not easy for this fellow to do what is has done, if you consider that when it was first being retailed, it was selling at close to $250! Usually, new comers into the market would try to capture market share by entering at a very low price, but she is entering at a very high price.

At that time, Senseo is retailing at less than a hundred dollars and one can get a drip filter brewer at less than $50. So, this unknown brand at that time, is selling at close to 3 times higher than the market leader, and 5 times more than the usual brewer. Now, think about it, if you are a coffee drinker that has never heard of this brand, would you pay so much money for it? It is very unlikely right? So, what is that key success factor that allows it to capture huge market share despite the odds?

That factor is quality. The coffee maker and the coffee pods that come from keurig is an innovation that is not only different but many notches better than what the industry is offering.

For example, coffee pods that are used on most single serve brewers are sealed together in a special filter paper. The coffee cannot be kept long in this manner and in fact, no matter how well you store it, some flavor would be lost. For keurig, they store in what is known as k-cups, it is not only air tight and the way the hot water pierced through the cups is a patented technology that assist it to produced better coffee.

Then, at a time where most single cup machines has 10 or 20 flavors, this b100 is armed with close to 50 varieties of not only coffee, but tea and chocolate. The fact is, this is a very good machine that produces quality drink, and you really have to try the machine and enjoy the drink to understand it. Otherwise, it would not have capture such huge market share right?

Coffee Dropshipper – How To Sell Coffee On eBay

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you want to sell coffee on eBay then you need to follow these few tips to make sure you are successful. Of course you can use these tips to sell coffee online and not just eBay auctions.

Before selling any product online or at eBay you need to make sure there is a demand for the product. The easiest way to do this is to go to eBay pulse. eBay pulse allows you to see the top ten searches within a product category on eBay. Obviously you want to pick a product that is in high demand on eBay. So at the time of writing this article eBay pulse is reporting these ten items as their most searched items within the coffee category.

Starbucks

Gevalia

Coffee

Keurig

Kona

Flavia

Dunkin donuts

K cups

Pods

Starbucks decaf

So now that you know what is in demand you need to find a supplier of the product. I would search for a reliable coffee drop ship company. This can be a little difficult. You don’t want to pick just any coffee dropshipper. You want to find a coffee drop shipper that can provide you with good service, preferably a live person to talk to when ordering and getting support. So how do you find a good coffee drop shipper?

I belong to several online eBay selling communities. These online forums help me find good drop shippers by providing feedback and reviews of drop shippers. If I want to sell coffee then I simply search for coffee vendors within the community and then check their reviews. Most of the communities I belong to will have a simple star rating system. I am normally looking for the five star drop shippers. This process is extremely valuable because I don’t have to worry if I picked a good drop ship company or not.

When selling coffee online or on eBay, find out what is in demand and then find a good drop shipper. Have fun.

Folgers Coffee – The History and Background of the Folgers Coffee Company

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Part of Proctor and Gamble, Folgers Coffee is one of the biggest brands of coffee in America today. Founded in the 19th century in San Francisco, California by J.A. Folger, it took the United States (the largest coffee market in the world) by storm. In 1963, Proctor and Gamble acquired the company.

There are eight types (called families) of Folgers in America today: Cafe Coffees, Coffee Pods, Instant Coffees, Gourmet Selections, Flavored Coffee (Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Chocolate Silk and Cinnamon), Simply Smooth, Coffeehouse Series and Classic Roast. In Canada, Folgers coffee is limited to Classic Roast and Mountain Roast.

Quite possibly the most catchy thing about the brand is the commercials it ran. The well known slogan “the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” resonated well with audiences and boosted sales.

Other popular television ad campaigns featured people sneaking in to four-star restaurants and replacing the expensive coffee that customers are used to drinking with Folgers Crystals. Not surprisingly, nobody could ever tell that the expensive coffee had been replaced with the cheaper instant version.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Folgers started experimenting with less traditional advertising, sponsoring NASCAR racing. By sponsoring popular drivers, it was almost as though NASCAR itself was endorsing the brand, and the ad campaign was fairly successful.

In 2006, yet another untraditional ad campaign was launched through viral marketing. Created by the ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi, the ads known as ìhappy morningsî were seen all over YouTube and various weblogs. In the ads, cheery and happy singers and dancers show up at sunrise to wake people up to greet the day.

Dateline NBC held a taste test of most popular brands of coffee, and in their experiment Folgers Classic roast scored last place.

Keurig Vs Tassimo – Which is Better?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Both the Tassimo and Keurig brewing machines are excellent single serve coffee machines but which is the best of the two? The answer greatly depends on personal preference after carefully examining some key features.

Visually, both machines take up a similar amount of space, but the Tassimo models have a more modern, sculpted look to them.

Keurig Brewers:

Keurig brewing machines are generally the least expensive of the two brands and they utilize “K cups” that are single serve plastic containers filled with an exact amount of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The plastic cups are sealed with foil to maintain freshness for long periods of time. The Keurig will brew K cups in less than a minute, but the miniature model takes a bit longer to brew a cup at around two minutes.

The coffee it produces is excellent, and the strength off the brew varies greatly on the intensity of the particular roast. The Keurig machines are not limited to using only K cup coffee manufacturers, a reusable filter accessory allows you to use any grind of coffee in the units.

Tassimo Brewers:

The Tassimo machines usually cost more money but they offer something the competing brand does not: the ability to make lattes and cappucinos. Tassimo offers a wide variety of coffees and their T disc technology is similar to the sealed Keurig K cups but there is a twist. Tassimo T discs have instruction codes on the sealed labels that is actually read by the computerized machine before brewing.

These instructions on the tops of the T discs enable the machine to decipher and control more intricate beverage techniques such as brewing an espresso at the right temperature and then adding frothed milk to make a cappuccino. This feature and the extra information it involves can come as an expense towards increasing the overall brewing time.

Tassimo brewers also make excellent coffee. Their ability to make cappuccinos and lattes is certainly a plus if you are interested in these additional beverages. While K cups do offer some interesting alternatives to regular coffee such as chai, all of the contents are limited to being sealed within one single K cup.

There is great debate between which of these single serve coffee brewing manufacturers is the superior one. The very best choice for you likely boils down to whether or not you feel the need to include cappuccino, latte or espresso in addition to regular coffee brewing. Keurig brewers are dedicated to brewing coffee only and many believe thisto be a benefit in overall simplicity and reduced brewing time.
