Pure Tragedy and Triumph – James F. Ware – Arizona
This edgey drama about the hoplessness of poverty and drug addiction has the veiwer plunging into the depths of despair, and finally lifted into the arms of hope. Young David Wenham is inspiring as the oldest son of a hoplessly heroine dependent mother played admirably by Molly Parker. Wenham’s range of emotion is surprising and broad for so young an actor. Keira Knightley is typically brilliant as the young boy’s emotionally challenged friend and, unfortunately, his dark enabler. Knightley’s character’s struggle with her circumstance and the better angels of her nature yield a performance equally inspiring to those of Parker and Wenham.
In the end, you are left cheering for the mother’s apparent recovery, and wrenching decline of the friend. I’d recommend this film to anyone not already swallowing antidepressants. For those who are, see a nice romantic comedy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Firstly, Harry Eden who plays Paul carries this movie brilliantly. He’s so convincing, cut with raw emotions that I found myself completely mesmerized by his performance. Molly Parker, who plays his mother, Mel, is incredible as well, and the scenes with Paul and Mel together are so compelling you forget they’re just actors. David Wenham, who I swear I’d seen before but couldn’t place until near the end of the movie (300, Van Helsing, Lord of the Rings), is fantastic as the drug dealer. Good to see him in a normal looking role for a change. I was surprised and happy to see Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot’s Dad) playing the detective. Unfortunately I wasn’t to convinced with Keira Knightley’s performance. The problem is everyone gives so much emotion while Keira’s character only appears to skims the surface. That might be the point, no need to drown us all in misery, but I just had a hard time connecting with her, probably because we never get to delve into her character much.

One small complaint: I really dislike films where the actor hardly looks pregnant but is really about to give birth. And when the baby arrives, heroin addicted, they’re about as plump and healthy as a 1 month old. Granted, I’m sure it would have been difficult to find a scrawny looking newborn, but still… Then again, I really dislike how films can be so powerful and wonderful in everyway, but lack deserved recognition. This is one of those movies.

I probably shouldn’t review it so soon after watching it, because my “intellectual side” probably isn’t online right now. This is a powerful drama, flawless in conception and execution, about a ten-year-old boy with a dead father, a mother addicted to heroin, and various and sundry other problems to deal with. I’ve watched two British films about heroin addiction this year and been moved to tears by both, but I’ve never met a heroin user in my life. We don’t have heroin in Watha. We probably don’t have British DVDs in the stores either. We don’t even have stores. But I digress. If you see this one, grab it. I know I’ll watch it again. I just don’t know how many times. Oh, and if you’re an author, consider this. “There are no minor characters.” If you’d like to see this premise in action, get this film. After all the crap I’ve reviewed this week, you don’t know how happy it makes me to cite an instance where a novelist can learn from a filmmaker.
2K4 INC DBA INDICAN PI: Set in the East-End of London, PURE is a story about the bond between a family and the pull of drugs. Following the death of his father, ten-year old Paul (Harry Eden) becomes the caretaker of his family mother Mel (Molly Parker) and youngest brother Lee (Vinni Hunter). His only friend is a flighty waitress Louise (Keira Knightley) who helps Paul in his desperate attempt to protect his family from the mother s drug addiction and her boyfriend, the local dealer (David Wenham).
