Scrapbooking has become one of the biggest hobbies in America and overseas! It’s become so popular that scrapbook supply stores have been popping up on the streets, online – everywhere! There are so many different things you can do with a scrapbook, there is no telling where you could begin or stop! I have gotten into myself (creating scrapbooks for my two daughters).

Let me tell you, I am far from an artsy-type, crafty person. However, once I got those albums, stickers, pens, brads, and everything else in my hands, I was instantly hooked! I absolutely love it, and my kids love seeing their pictures and memories put together in their own creative books. It’s a fantastic hobby, and it’s just so much fun. I especially love the rub-on stencils. What a great invention!

Oh, yes, you’re interested in starting a business. I told you about my excitement with scrapbooking to let you know how widespread this hobby is, and how overly addictive it can be. It is just a wonderful thing to be able to preserve your children’s memories and pass them down when they are old enough to take care of them. However, it doesn’t just stop there. There are many different themes a scrapbook can take. Some include:

3. Religious Ceremonies

4. Remembrance

5. Birthdays

6. Sports

7. College

8. Scouting

9. Traveling

11. Seasonal

There are so many more ideas, I couldn’t even list them all. It is just a matter of what someone wants to preserve with a scrapbook. It’s much more fun and creative than a simple photo album. It combines arts and crafts with photography. The possibilities are endless.

If you sound like you would love to do this, find your local scrapbooking store (I’m sure there is one, otherwise you can search online), and see what is out there. It’s amazing. There is such a variety of supplies, and it is overwhelming if you are new to this hobby. Speak to others who like to scrapbook, talk to your local store owner, chat with others online in appropriate forums and chat rooms. See what your potential competitors are doing, and how well they are doing.

Since this is such a widespread hobby, and is so vast, there is a variety of businesses you could spawn. One is creating scrapbooks for those who can’t find the time. Not only would this be fun (if you find you enjoy it), but you would be getting paid for it, too! Creating precious memories in a scrapbook for someone can be quite the fulfilling career.

There are many tricks you can use to make your photos more interesting. The most common method is to cut and crop pictures so that they are different sizes. But there are several other things that you can to add interest, including placement of pictures and using low-tech and high-tech solutions to manipulate the picture itself.

One trick is to make a collage in order to fit several photos on one page. As well, you can use newspaper clippings or blocks of text in the collage to emphasize a theme or commemorate an occasion. Each picture or clipping can be a different size. The trick with collages is to layout the pictures first, to see how you would like them to overlap, before permanently attaching them in place.

Another trick is to give a mosaic look to your photograph. First, on the back of the photo, draw both vertical and horizontal lines to create a grid of very small squares. Then cut out one square at a time. As you cut each square, glue it onto a white piece of paper, making sure to leave an equal amount of space between each square. It is important to cut and glue one square at a time so that no squares get out of order. The end result is a beautiful mosaic.

A third trick that you can use is to weave photographs together like a straw mat. This look will create texture and dimension on your scrapbooking page. To start, select a picture and print out two copies of it. Turn both pictures over so that you can draw lines on the back of the photos. On one picture, draw vertical lines and on the other picture, draw horizontal lines. Make sure that both the vertical and horizontal lines are the same width – half an inch is a good width. You will probably find that anything smaller is too hard to work with and anything larger will not have enough strips. Next, cut along the lines on both pictures. Finally, weave together the cut out strips and place the finished picture on decorative scrapbook paper to give it a framed look.

A fourth trick involves downloading and printing clipart from the internet. Since there is such a wide variety of clipart on the internet, you will be able to find exactly the right picture or expression to fit your scrapbook page. As well, you can glue the clipart to foam in order to give it a three dimensional look and feel.

A final trick is to use a software program like Adobe Photoshop or IrfanView (free) to manipulate a picture. Using the software, you can create different effects. Play with them until you find one effect that you like. Build a scrapbook page around the newly manipulated picture. Another idea is to take the same picture and save it every time you use a different effect. Then take those pictures and make them into a collage. You will end up with the same picture on one page, but each picture will be slightly different so the page will look very interesting.

A wonderful way to start your scrapbooking tradition is with a wedding scrapbook album. It is a good idea to plan page layouts and ideas ahead of time. You can start by making a list of activities that will be taking place before the wedding. Or plan the activities around the pages you do want to include in your album. Metal embossing is the art of creating designs on a metal sheet, by raising or sinking and smoothening the surfaces, to give it a three dimensional look. The hollows or raised portions may be filled with paint or may remain as it is. This is done to make simple wall hangings or as a collection for scrapbooks. It is mainly done as a hobby and one could make money by selling the pieces to people who would like to use them as home décor.

Metal embossing as a craft, was used by the ancient Celts and later found its way into Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The sheet metals that are generally used for embossing are copper, pewter and aluminium. They come in various thicknesses, with a shiny finish and are available in all the hobby outlets and craft shops. Generally, a craft scissors can be used to cut the sheets, and are very flexible and will dent at the slightest touch.

The tools required for metal embossing are very simple. A beginner’s kit comes in a set of a few sheets of metal, a stylus tool, a few patterns and instructions. The stylus is a wooden bulb-shaped to be held like a pen and used to trace the pattern. This rounded tip of the “pen” pushes out the areas on the metal sheet that is out of the pattern. The other tip of the stylus is pointed and is used to create lines.

The stylus can be used to write text and emboss alphabets in the sheets. Swirls, dots and other patterns can be done to give a background for the main picture. Strips of embossed metal that are decorated with accessories or paints can be used as frames for scrapbook photographs.

One need to choose the design first and a beginner could do well to choose a simple one. The metal sheet is to be placed on a soft surface like a stack of newspapers or a mouse pad. The design has to be placed on the metal sheet and traced using the stylus, pressing wherever needed. Once the paper is done with, the stylus has to be moved over the embossed lines to deepen them by pressing down firmly and evenly. Once this is done, turn the metal sheet over so that the raised lines face up. The smoothening of the excess scribbles and creating of finer lines and details can be done at this stage.

Use paint to give colors. Various textures can be added to make it more interesting. Cross-hatching can be done by making small crosses with the tip of the screwdriver to give it a rough finish. As one gets better control of the stylus, more and more intricate designs can be made.

I have always been a proponent of cheap scrapbooking. I mean, I totally love using new products and I’ll admit to spending into the double digits for some scrapbooking pages. But I love being frugal too and I like the creativity that can come from not having a ton to spend on scrapbooking supplies. So what are some of the ways that you can keep your money in the bank and still make great layouts? Here are some of my suggestions to be “cheap” without looking like it:

1.) Look around the house. You would be surprised what “scrapbooking” supplies you can find. I have used many household supplies or products including: paperclips, craft paint (not only can you use it to accent a page, but you can use it the same way you use stamp ink), old envelopes and used stamps (great for destination/travel pages), old/broken jewelry (use as embellishments), shopping/clothing/market tags (you can paint over, dye, or cover them), wrapping paper, gift ribbon, hair ribbons or rubber bands, game pieces, old maps, book pages (as backgrounds), cereal/shoe boxes (for chipboard) and much more. Just be careful that these items are acid free or at least if they are not, won’t be touching any of your photos.

2.) Go digital – or at least a little bit. There are many sites out there that offer freebies every week or so. I have stated loading up on these free downloads. Not only can you use them to do digital scrapbooking layouts, but I take parts of them and print them off to use on my regular scrapbooking layouts. 3.) Have a scrapbooking supply swap. The next time you want to get together to scrapbook, just tell everyone that you will be having a “swap” table where people can bring supplies they don’t use any more or don’t want. You could also make it a sale too if someone wants to sell something they have. The last time I did this kind of “swap” I ended up going home with a ton of papers and stickers that others didn’t want.

Scrapbooking may not be the cheapest hobby out there, but it needn’t be expensive. I am sure there are lots of other ways that each individual can make it even more affordable. If you have any more ideas for making scrapbooking cheaper, let me know your great discoveries.

I guess you could say that I’m fairly new to the digital side of scrapbooking. While I’ve been doing traditional scrapbooking for many, many years, I have only just recently delved into the digital realm and begun creating my own unique layouts using computers to aid in my designs. I have found that while this style of scrapping doesn’t have the same tactile familiarity as traditional scrapping, the final product is somewhat easier to make clean and neat.

The textures and scents of things – the way paper feels in your hands, or the smell of the adhesives and glues (I’m not talking about getting high here, so don’t start!) are some of the things that have grown on me over the years. I’m used to getting in and getting my hands dirty and really playing around with the physical components to each design, so it’s a little bit of a struggle to get my head around having everything inside a flat screen in front of me. I feel like it’s all so far away, and sometimes want to reach into the monitor and touch what’s inside.

One of my favorite tools for manipulating digital imagery is Adobe Photoshop, an expensive program by any standards, but one that I luckily have the use of through my husband’s business. I would consider myself a beginner with the software, but even while using other specific digiscrapping programs I find that Photoshop is best for touching up pictures, cropping, and doing my own basic background, texture, and pattern designs.

The main thing to remember when scrapping in a digital format is that no matter what kinds of colors or visual depth you try to create, your designs are always going to come out completely flat until you add physical decoration of some kind. Often scrapbooks can become thick and the pages separated when you have many designs which incorporate some type of “three-dimensional” object, whether it be a raised button or some other object that sits up off the top of the page. Doing designs digitally and then adding physical objects later is called “hybrid scrapbooking,” and in fact this is what I have been doing most often these days. If you know your tools and can incorporate both digital and physical elements, you can create some pretty nifty designs. Happy scrapping!

• Why decorate using crepe paper sheets? Because the variety of colors you can get are astounding. These sheets come in blues, greens, reds, yellows, purples, oranges, and so on. This paper come in pale colors such as your pastels, bright colors, and your normal everyday colors. The colors can be mixed and matched to achieve any effect that you might desire. He or she can use the material as a backdrop or frames for his pictures or to even decorate the pictures after they have been pasted into the book.

• What other advantage is there to using crepe paper sheets? They are inexpensive. You can buy many of these paper sheets for just a few dollars. Then, if he or she makes a mistake, the error can just be thrown in the trash and a new shape can be cut from the inexpensive paper.

You will love being able to look back on your son or daughters childhood with them, reviewing with fond memories the hours and hours of fun you had creating this adorable, personal scrapbook, using the crepe paper sheets to embellish the memories, with your child.

One of the great things about scrapbooking as a hobby is that the longer you do it, the more possibilities you uncover. As you learn to view the world through the eyes of a scrapbooker, other hobbies like stamping or sewing, start to seem applicable to your scrapbook album as well. Then you form a pocket by sewing the edges of the cardstock over the vellum so that the stitches are apparent. Sew simple!

4. Bold and Beady: Some people avoid using beads because they imagine they are too difficult to adhere well. Try using thin wire with small uniform beads, and then affix with both a clear adhesive tacky tape and liquid glue that is safe on pictures. Then use the design as a border for your photos.

5. Create a Background: Stamps and die-cut letters can offer a fun alternative to plain paper for your background. Consider stamping or adhering die-cut words or letters all across your page. You could use words to a song, names or random word choices. Finally, tape your pictures over your prose. By selecting the font and colors you like, your possibilities are infinite.

When trying new scrapbooking techniques, keep in mind that the proper tools can make or break the experience. Just imagine trying to crop and journal your pages with dull cutting utensils or dried out markers. The first step to using a new technique is to set your self up for success. Scrapbooking has become very popular lately, adding new trends to keeping family albums. So why would someone want to do a baby shower using scrapbooks? Well this is a simple answer in a way.
