Out of the box, I was not overly satisfied with the sound quality of these headphones. They had a a bit of a crackle during the highs and I was not very fond of it. I began to research “burning in” headphones and came across and great site that has audio clips of white noise, pink noise, and frequency sweeper. I let it loop through my headphones for approx 6 hours and they sound so much better. I haven’t heard a crackle yet. This might be all in my head but they definitely sound a lot better. If you are unsatisfied with the quality at first, try and burn with some different sound clips. I used burninwave.com and they have some audio clips on there. As far as the comfort is concerned, they are very comfortable and I can barely tell they are in my ears.

Sennheiser MX 880 Premium Stereo Headphones

Some months ago while rummaging through my basement, I found a pair of earbuds in a plastic bag that came with the laptop I purchased over 2 years. Knowing the bad rap earbud-styled ‘phones get in the audiophile community, I figured they would be all about sound and little about music. Well, I decided to see how they would sound on my laptop and headphone amp. Needless to say, I wasn’t surprised by its bombastic sound but, depending on the material, they were almost musical in a lot of ways. That got me thinking: Is there such a thing as audiophile-grade earbuds? Well, in a word, yes.

After some research, I found that Sennheiser (among a few other companies) makes earbuds that are worthy of an audiophile’s attention and I purchased their MX-660 in December 2009 which were top-o’-the-line at the time. I did a review on them here stating how wonderful they sounded but I didn’t expect Sennheiser to up the ante with the MX-880. Are these better than the MX-660? Yes, in a word.

Unlike their other bud offerings, Sennheiser chose to use a dynamic speaker with a transducer that gives the beautifully-designed 880′s a clean and vibrant sound with very little midrange/upper bass blare. In fact, these buds are darn near as balanced as my Grado SR-325i which is saying a lot. However, beware that having balanced ‘phones will reveal how great or poor your recordings are. No bass-from-hell design here to cover up any musical shortcomings! If your hardware (MP3′s player, Smartphone, PC, portable CD player, DAC, etc.) is good or bad, and the source (MP3, WAV, 24/96 file, CD, etc.) is good or bad, your results will be, as you would guess, good or bad. While I mainly use these with my NuForce uDAC/headphone amp unit USB’d to my laptop, their sound is simply spectacular. No detectable emphasis or dips in any particular frequency. However, plugging them straight into a PC/laptop (or any portable) will give you the same general characteristics.

Also, as a comparison to the Sennheiser MX-660, the sound is remarkably similar except the 660′s have a slightly wider sound in terms of effect which may be an artifact of the “Basswind” circuit. The 880′s narrow that effect down to give a more center-of-the-head sound but it doesn’t seem to affect the soundstaging of the recordings themselves. In fact, the speaker design (as well as having a larger housing than the 660′s) probably eliminates the “air” of the 660 design while keeping the “air” of the music intact. Well done!

Nits? Well, the rotary volume on the cord can be somewhat annoying to use since it’s a two-handed operation. Not sure why a slider control wasn’t used like on the 660′s with its one-handed operation. However, it isn’t as big as the picture would indicate. Like the buds themselves, it’s made of aluminum and is very light so it won’t get in the way of normal use.

What else can I say? If you want true audiophile-quality, earbud-styled headphones, get them. It’s that simple.
