How did Bob Marley start into the world of music? As with many people, Bob’s path was a long and winding one, with may forks that eventually led him from very humble beginnings to musical prominence on the world stage. His father was a quarter master of a ship in the British West Indian regiment. His mother was actually 32 years younger then his father at the time. His fathers family was white, and due to increasing pressure from his fathers family, Bob Marley saw little of his father.

In his early teens, his mother moved the family from the northern part of Jamaica to Kingston. Not actually Kingston proper, but a small shanty town on the outskirts of Jamaica called Trenchtown. It was here, the Bob Marley would meet the future members of his band. Those included Bunny Livingston and Peter McIntosh. Here, in Trenchtown in very humble beginnings to say the least laid the seeds of one of the most remarkable and influential set of musicians to ever hit the world stage.

It certainly doesn’t seem to be the most likely recipe for fame and success, but the music business is a funny place. At least it was back then, before the big corporate moguls had their say and control. They did exert an influence to be sure, but not the way they do today. Back then, a talented artist, with a message, a little luck, and desire to break out of their surroundings was enough to create an incredibly rich and resonant musical success story the likes of which have never been duplicated. Whether such a remarkable story could happen today is debatable.

Luckily for those of us who were around during the ascension of Reggae music to world prominence, Bob Marley did happen. And his influence was felt everywhere. Not just in his music, but his religion, and his message of peace. A young boy growing up in what must have been very confusing times, managed to become an inspiration and spokesman for thousands world wide. His music and message still survive today. Bob Marley posters, art, music, and prodigy survive and flourish to this day.

We live in a lucky age, that allows for music to be recorded and passed on through the generations. It’s been over forty years since Bob Marley made his first album, and much of his music is still ingrained in out generations youth. One has to wonder, how many more years the next lucky generations will hear his gift.

The origin of hip-hop can be traced back as far as the ancient tribes in Africa. Rap has been compared with the chants, drumbeats and foot-stomping African tribes performed before wars, the births of babies, and the deaths of kings and elders. Historians have reached further back than the accepted origins of hip-hop. It was born as we know it today in the Bronx, cradled and nurtured by the youth in the low-income areas of New York City.

Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ’s comments weren’t as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.

During the late sixties, reggae wasn’t popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who’d been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.

Herc’s DJ style caught on. His party’s grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dance hall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.

Others copied Herc’s style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.

One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it.

Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. He was the guy who used his turntable to create fresh sounds with old records. Then, he became the guy who mixed these familiar breaks with synthesizers to produce completely new beats. Not much has changed in that aspect of hip-hop. The guy who creates the beat is still the heart of the track. Now, we call him the producer. Even though some DJs work as producers as well as DJs (quite a few start out as DJs before they become producers), today’s title “DJ” doesn’t carry the same connotative meaning it did in the eighties. Today’s hip-hop producer performs the same tasks as the eighty’s DJ.

It may seem kind of strange that you would want to know how to tap your own phone line. After all, aren’t phone taps meant to be used on other people? However, there is a definite advantage to having a tap on your own line, as long as you are the one doing the tapping. The best thing you can do, especially if you are fielding some pretty important or incriminating phone calls, is to record them. You can use them for bargaining, or you can use them as evidence that someone is behaving inappropriately.

It is not too hard to learn how to tap your own phone line using simple and relatively inexpensive items that can be picked up from your local electronics store. You will need one Ferrite split core assembly, 75 feet of 28 AWG magnetic coil wire (enameled), one 1/8th inch mini-lug cable (should have tinned ends), and make sure have heat shrink tubing, tie wraps, and electrical tape.

One you have all of these items, it is time to begin learning how to tap your own phone line. Open the core assembly and wind the coil around the end that does not open. There should be roughly 100 turns of coil. You should leave a six inch tail sticking out before you start winding, and then at the end, create a second six inch tail when you clip the wire.

Use fine grit sand paper on the last half inch of the coil wire to remove the enamel. You have to be careful not to break the wire. Slip the tubing over each end of the wire for insulation purposes. Then, solder the ends of the mini phone plug to the coil wire. Use tie wraps to secure the cable to the tap, and insulate solder joints with electrical tape. Slip one (and one only) of the phone conductor circuit through the split core. You can then attach the core to a tape recorder to record all conversations that you wish.

This is a very simple way that you can create your own effective phone tap quickly and inexpensively. Additionally, you have the peace of mind that comes with being able to record conversations because you know how to tap your own phone line.

Some say that inflation is good. The capital of your mortgage becomes eroded, whilst your house price goes up for instance! In fact now at age 55, with diminishing returns and having paid for 25 years, the projection has dropped to £3,000 pa or 555 Mars Bars a month!

It seems probable that more has been written on the subject of “team building” – or, if you want to be formal about it, “group development” – than any other aspect of management.

There is something about the subject that attracts academics like bears to honey, and all want to build their own model and make up their own buzz words.

As early as 1965, Bruce Tuckman was able to collate no less than fifty previous models and studies. Needless to say, the good Professor Tuckman could not resist the opportunity to add a fifty first.

His is the model which divides group development into four phases: Forming; Storming; Norming; and Performing. To this he later added a fifth phase, Adjourning… obviously.

There have been many, many more since then.

If Professor Tuckman’s buzzwords are not buzzy enough, there is always Tubbs’ Orientation, Conflict, Consensus, and Closure… or Fisher’s Orientation, Conflict, Emergence, and Reinforcement… or McGrath’s Inception, Technical Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, and Execution… and so on…

Most of these are cute little internally consistent systems with little relevance to the outside world.

They might provide neat categories in which to fit what has already happened, but it is very doubtful if any team leader has ever said, “So that concludes the Technical Problem Solving Phase, we now move on to the Conflict Resolution Phase”.

Part of the problem is that the sheer bulk of the literature means that there is confusion about the very definition of basic concepts. Different models often use different words for the same thing. Equally, the same words may mean different things in different models.

Even the expression “team building” has become ambiguous.

In academic circles, it refers – correctly – to the whole process of group development, but in popular business culture it has become synonymous with group dynamic games, bonding sessions, trust exercises and the like. At the risk of adding yet another model to the overlong list, the simplest, and therefore the best, way to approach team building is as a two stage process.

Stage one is the recruitment, selection, and organisation of the team in the first place. This obviously happens before the team ever meets.

Stage two is everything that follows, the meeting of the team and getting it to work.

The problem with much of the academic literature is that it only starts at stage two. By that time, it is already too late. If the wrong people have been recruited and selected, or even if the right people are there but have been put in the wrong organisational framework, the damage has been done.

No amount of team building exercises can make up for a having the wrong people or the wrong structure.

Indeed, part of the problem with the narrow definition of team building, and with many of the academic models, is that they distract attention from the really important issues of recruitment, selection, and organisation. If the people are wrong, no amount of paintballing is going to get them to work together successfully.

U.S. Representative Jack Kingston- a Republican from Georgia, has introduced a bill that would lower the drinking age to 18 at domestic and foreign military bases. This proposed legislation would allow these individuals that are under 21 to drink beer (3.2 beer – although most domestic beers are a minimum of 4.6 percent alcohol) at base restaurants and clubs only.

I agree with Sheila McNeill (the Navy League’s former national president) when she says -

“If you are responsible enough to be willing to sacrifice your life for your country, you should be able to drink alcohol. They should not have to sneak around and do it.”

I have always felt and will continue to believe that if our youth is willing to join the military and sacrifice his/her life for our Country then he/she should be afforded the luxury of drinking alcohol in a responsible and respectful manner. There is nothing wrong with our servicemen and servicewomen alleviating stress by drinking a couple of beers while they watch a game or play some cards.

Representative Kingston says he will combat potential problem drinkers by enforcing strict rules regarding obtaining a designated driver and take steps to ensure proper conduct while in public. In addition, legislation will prohibit the consumption of alcohol anywhere other than designated establishments on bases only.

If it is determined that a certain soldier is not drinking responsibly and is a danger to others – he/she should be court-martialed on the grounds that he/she is immature and not mentally sound to handle the responsibilities that come with serving his/her Country – after all, if one cannot control himself, how can he be trusted with the lives of others?

Representative Kingston goes on to say that “unofficially” there is a lot of support by military leaders to get this bill approved; however, “officially” they are hesitant to speak out. Why do you suppose this is? Can you say that JUST those that are under 21 AND in the military can drink? What about those that are in the Army National Guard where “Guard Soldiers are just as likely to serve in their home communities-just one weekend per month, and one two-week period each year”. Are they allowed to drink too?

I am beginning to wonder if this is more a marketing ploy to get more individuals to join the military and what about those that are not in the military? How long is it before Legal Drinking Age is uniformly 18?

If you aren’t yet an organizing master, try getting some practice in your linen-closet. This is an organizing task that is quick and easy, and brings satisfaction for a job well done without too much effort. This is, assuming that the linen closet in your home is kept just for linen. If you also use your linen closet to store other things like towels or cleaning products, you need to figure out if there is enough room in there for everything. You may be able to find better places for your non-linen items.

After you have figured out what will go in the closet, you can then decide how to configure your storage.

Linen closets generally are easiest to use when there is a series of shelves. A combination of shelves and a hanging rod will also work. Try using hooks and little baskets for smaller items, this prevents clutter and loss.

The items that you use most frequently should be kept at eye level for easy access. This would include bed linens and daily use towels. Some people also use their linen closets for storage of out-of-season coats and blankets. If you do this as well, keep these items in proper containers or bags. This keeps them fresher.

Some people also keep cleaning products and appliances in their closet. It’s not uncommon to find the iron and ironing board, and vacuum cleaner in a linen closet. If you do this, consider where you put everything if you have young kids.

For families with small children it is critical to keep cleaning products out of reach of children. You will need to use the high shelves, and ideally put a safety latch on the door. For added luxury, add a nice fragrant sachet to the linen closet. This will keep your towels and bedding smelling lovely, and be a treat when you go to take them out.
