There have always been “Linking Logs” and wooden blocks that functioned as fun and safe toys for the children of the family. The idea of using pieces to create one or more vehicles or designs is not new either. What makes it unique though is the interaction that one has with the project and the details in which one puts onto the pieces. There will never be a set like what you can create for your child. That is what makes the pieces valuable and an heirloom for future generations. Who knows, your great-great grandchildren may play with the toy wheel that you made for your child.

Coconut oil is one of the most popularly used oils to make soaps. What then is virgin coconut oil? What is the difference between the two? Can this kind of oil be used to make soaps? 

Coconut oil is made of copra, which is dried coconut meat or kernel. However, to extract the oil from copra it has first to go through the drying (smoke, sun or kiln) process then the unrefined oil is purified or refined using high heat. This process is done because the procedure of drying the copra is not sanitary so the unrefined oil has to go thru the refining process to remove the impurities. Chemicals are added to prolong the shelf life of the oil. 

Virgin coconut oil, on the other hand, is extracted from fresh coconut meat using non-copra procedures. There is no need to use chemicals or high heat to refine this kind of oil because the extracting process is done either mechanically or naturally thus the extracted oil is natural and pure. The oil is extracted either by quick drying or wet milling process. Whichever process is used, the extracted liquid is genuine and clean oil and retains the scent and taste of coconuts and has a longer shelf life (in several years). It is also of very high quality and with high antioxidant levels. There is also another type of virgin coconut oil called extra virgin coconut oil. The difference between the two is that extra virgin is processed mechanically and/or manually without using heat while virgin oil uses heat in the extraction process. 

Comparatively it is best to use virgin oil in making soap because of its high quality and purity.   Added to this, the oil can be easily absorbed by the skin so it does not leave a greasy feeling and at the same time moisturizes the skin. Although refined oil does have the same properties as virgin coconut oil, the difference is in the purity of the extracted oil. Both oils also have antimicrobial properties that can help prevent bacterial and fungal infection in the skin. Because of its purity, using virgin oil will give your soap a longer shelf life than when refined coconut oil is used. 

The major difference of these oils is in their costs. Virgin oil, due to the tedious and long process of extraction, is more expensive than refined oil. But if you want to really manufacture a unique, safe and long lasting product then you should use virgin oil even if your end product might also be more expensive than other regular soaps.

My sister phoned and asked me if I knew how to clean a steam iron. Well I did have a good idea but I was not an expert, I was just very careful with mine. She explained that now she has this wonderful washing machine and this super clothes dryer, she wanted her iron to work really well too. I explained to her that she should always empty the water out after use, always stand it somewhere safe to cool down and always wrap the flex carefully to protect it. I also told her that if any substance to stuck on the plate, it should be cleaned off but only when the iron had cooled down. This would ensure she didn’t get burnt and make the cleaning much easier and more effective.

Any waxy substances however, can often be cleaned off by heating the iron up to its highest setting and running it across newspaper. Oily substances can be removed with ammonia on a rag and then just rinsing. Vinegar is often recommended for a lot of irons. You just pour it on a cloth and then rub the cloth over the iron. You can also add baking soda to the vinegar for even harder cleaning.

Any build up in the vents can be a big problem as you cannot use anything harsh – scratching the base of the iron just causes massive problems in the future. You need to use something soft like a cotton bud. A great way to clean the water tank out is to pour a solution of half vinegar and half water into the tank and heat the iron up and allow it to steam well for 5/6 minutes. You then need to drain the iron and then about an hour later repeat all this with just clean water. If you don’t you will have some wonderfully smelly clothes next time you iron.

I’ve got an iron with a very shiny bottom plate and I try never to iron over anything that could stick to the iron. However if it ever does accidentally, I wait until it cools down and use window cleaner spray with a soft cloth and it seems to work really well.

Steam generator irons are more expensive but they supply a constant flow of high pressure steam. We were both a bit concerned by the amount of space that one of these would take up. It seems that they make it easier to remove wrinkles even from dry difficult fabrics as they have a high steam flow but there is a delay between pressing the button for more steam and getting it and there is no spray function. They are much more expensive than an ordinary iron and we decided against this type.

Cordless irons are like an ordinary steam iron to look at but without the cord. They are easier to manoeuvre but we read a few reviews and some people loved them as there was no cord to get in the way and some hated them as they did not seem to keep to the set temperature as well. In the end we were sceptical and decided not to take a chance on one of these.

Off to the shops tomorrow – how had we gone from how to clean a steam iron to buying one?

Ironing trousers is easy if you follow my, expert step by step guide. Trousers with no creases will soon be the norm! A perfect guide to ironing your trousers.

Step 1: You will need.

* some trousers

* An iron

* An ironing board

* A spray bottle filled with water

* A Cloth/tea towel

* Some White vinegar

Step 2: Methods. There are two ways of pressing your trousers for that important date or meeting. The traditional method is with an iron. Alternatively, you could use a trouser press

Step 3: Be Prepared. Use a steam iron and a sturdy ironing board to make the task easier. Make sure the ironing board is set to a comfortable height for you. Switch the iron on. Check the label on the inside of your trousers to identify what temperature the iron should be set to, and adjust the temperature dial accordingly. Keep a spray bottle filled with water nearby to help you in the event of any stubborn creases.

Step 4: The trousers. Lay the trousers out flat along the length of the ironing board, positioning one leg over the other. You could spray a little water over the trousers to make ironing out creases easier.

HANDY HINT

To avoid getting the horrible shininess common in wool or dark fabrics, use a damp cloth or tea towel to protect the trousers: Lay the cloth or towel over the trouser leg, and iron through it. A good steam iron at the right temperature should avoid this problem.

Step 5: One leg at a time. Flip one leg back and concentrate on the leg that is left. Do not iron the entire length of the leg in one motion, but focus on small sections of the leg, slowly working down from the pockets in circular motions. This will avoid stretching the trousers. If there is a crease running down the length of the trousers from the last time you pressed them, iron it out.

Step 6: The second leg. Bring back the other leg, ensuring the inseams are still lined up. Repeat the ironing motion with this leg.

Step 7: Repeat. Turn the trousers over on the ironing board to iron the other side of the legs, careful to keep the inseams lined-up. As before, flip the top leg back, iron the 1st leg, and bring the 2nd leg back to iron that.

Step 8: Creating a crease. Not all trousers have a built in crease. If you wish to iron in a crease at the front of the trousers, make sure that you position the inseams and the side seams directly over each other as to ensure that the crease at the front of the legs will be central. To create a longer-lasting crease at the front, you must use a pressing solution. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water. Cover the crease with a thin cloth and spray it with the solution. Press a small section of the cloth at a time, lifting and lowering the iron, until the press cloth is dry. Once you have finished ironing, remove the cloth. Allow the crease to dry thoroughly before moving the trousers from the ironing board.

Step 9: Neatly Ironed. Don’t forget to switch your iron off, and let it cool down for a few minutes before putting it away.

If you’re not wearing the trousers straight away, place them on a hanger and they’ll be ready to wear the next time you need them.
