Small chocolate pralines are easy to make at home and they taste great. Simply melt a bar of dark chocolate, cut some dried apricots into quarters and dip them into the chocolate. If you want you can add some drops of brandy or whisky into the chocolate when it’s melted to give the truffles a subtle liquor taste.

Beauty Products

Men are using more and more beauty products so why not make your own homemade liquid soap. Scented with a few drops of a male aftershave or any perfume oil, liquid soap is a great homemade gift for men.

To make, grate a natural soap bar, add distilled water or vodka and heat it up in a saucepan while stirring with a wooden spoon and it will turn into a nice smooth liquid soap. If you want to give it a color just add some drops of food coloring put it into a plastic bottle. Create a personalized message on some decorative paper and stick it to the front of the bottle.

German Shepherd Information And History

The German Shepherd dog has a relatively short history though it is a well-loved and well-worked dog today. The breed began in Germany in 1899 and was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1911. Briefly renamed the Alsatian Wolf Dog due to anti-German sentiment surrounding World War II, the dog regained popularity so much that over 48,000 Shepherds were enlisted into the German army. The intelligent and hard-working breed can be trained in a variety of areas.

German Shepherd breeders may specialize in dogs trained in a certain line of work or they may be able to refer buyers to specially trained Shepherd kennels. These dogs are commonly trained to be guides for the visually impaired, members of the police force and security for home and business owners. German Shepherds are one of the easiest breeds to train due to their inherent intelligence, desire to work, courage, physical and mental strength and loyalty. This breed excels in jobs that allow them to protect and serve. There is no better protector than a German Shepherd.

Purebred German Shepherds have specific characteristics. Max von Stephanitz inbred the first dogs so that certain traits would be guaranteed in the line. The German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany sets the breed standard. It defines characteristics from body measurements to character to gait. German Shepherd breeders should be familiar with the breed standard as well as what health problems to expect and to have dogs evaluated for. For example, this breed is prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal disorders.

Good breeders will also have registration papers or some form of pedigree for each Shepherd they sell, preferably from the American Kennel Club. German Shepherd breeders will also provide medical records and offer a guarantee against the dog developing hip dysplasia at least within the first year. Good breeders have their own kennels, and dogs should receive daily socialization as well as being well fed and groomed. Unfortunately, there are many breeders who may attempt to sell Shepherds with false registration papers. They may also sell unhealthy dogs. It is important to know how to avoid bad German shepherd breeders.

How does a buyer avoid bad or illicit breeder? There are some obvious signs by which to recognize bad breeders. Unlike good breeders, bad breeders often do not have their own kennels, or if they do they refuse to allow buyers to visit. This is a clue that the breeder does not want the buyer to see the environment in which the German Shepherd has been raised or that the breeder does not have a kennel at all. Some so called breeders are actually brokers who take a fee for finding buyers for breeders.

Another sign is that the breeder cannot or will not provide health information. Some may have ties with specific veterinarians and may want a buyer to get medical documentation only from certain vets. A buyer should be able to take their puppy for evaluation at the veterinarian’s office of their choice. A final sign of a bad breeder is not asking the buyers for any information about themselves. Good breeders interview buyers to make sure the household their puppy is going to will be appropriate and have adequate discipline, care and training. Breeders that don’t ask questions don’t care about their German Shepherds.

So, as either a parent or a child, how do know what to purchase as teacher appreciation gifts? I know cannot speak for every teacher out there, but the gift means more than just a special item or trinket to us. We will remember the student as well as the amount of respect and care that teacher appreciation gifts will show us.

In my experience as a teacher, I have found that any gift from apples to pencils to trinkets, are sentimentally valuable to me. Whether I like the fruit or the trinket they bring me–whether I would have considered buying it for myself or completely ignored it in the store.

The following are a few hints I can make from experience about Teacher appreciation gifts:

1) If the child wants to choose the gift him or herself, let them. And even if you think it is horrible–you really do not have to suggest something else for the child to consider as an alternative gift for his or her teacher. The child will be proud that he or she picked something out all by themselves, and will probably brag to the teacher that the gift was his or her idea without any help. -They do this with big smiles on their faces. It is great to see.

2) Teacher appreciation gifts can be given at any time–and you never have to feel obligated to bring gifts for teachers. Maybe this teacher was especially encouraging and patient with the student in a particular subject where the child needed or wanted to improve. A random gift is so much more surprising and pleasing to the instructor if it is unexpected.

3) If you really are concerned about bringing in practical teacher appreciation gifts that the teachers will be able to use in the classroom, some great gift ideas are things like pencils, nice pens, notebooks, chalk, a new chalkboard eraser etc–especially if the one that belongs to the classroom seems particularly old or worn out.

4) Many parents feel obligated to bring in teacher appreciation gifts on the holidays–especially Christmas. The same rules apply–do not feel that it is an obligation on your part, and do not fell as though you need to spend money.

5) Bringing teacher appreciation gifts on test days may be cute and thoughtful–but often this gift will not improve your child’s grade on the test she or she is taking that day. I still appreciate finding an apple on my desk on the day of the big history test–but I find myself thinking to myself ‘nice try, but you cannot fool me’, even though the gift still puts a smile on my face. The apple on the desk any other day is much more pleasing, simple and sweet. There are also apple gift baskets available for teachers.

6) Gifts for teachers do not have to be something that you buy in a store or order from a catalogue or shop for online. Sometimes the best teacher appreciation gifts are things like crafts, drawings, or projects that their students make for them. The Petrol Strimmer – The Gardeners Best Friend

The petrol strimmer is a great tool for every gardener to have in their sheds. It can be used to maintain the edges of your lawn or getting rid of tough imposing weeds and many other heavy duty tasks. Although not in the same danger league as the chainsaw, the strimmer does though have a couple of safety issues you must be aware of when operating it.

The most obvious danger and threat from the trimmer is that of small objects such as pebbles or fragments of broken glass that can be thrown up at great velocity by the nylon cord of the strimmer. You never know when this will happen, but you can be pretty sure that some time you will experience it.

The petrol strimmer when in full flow can be a loud and noisy little creature and constant exposure to this noise at close proximity can damage your eardrum. So when you buy the strimmer remember that you need to protect those precious senses, sight and hearing, of yours. Invest in a decent pair of eye goggles and some ear plugs or ear defenders then you should be fine.

Now most petrol strimmers are powered by a 2 stroke engine. These engines give out a very high power output for their size and are ideal for such things as power tools. As with all engines the 2 stroke is no exception and needs lubricating in order for it to operate and not seize. But unlike car engines for example the 2 stroke engine cannot use sump lubrication.

This is because the crankcase is actually used to pump the fuel and air mixture into the cylinder. So in order to lubricate and oil the 2 stroke engine you have to mix oil with the petrol. This you do yourself using 1 part oil to 20 parts petrol. So 5% of your fuel mixture should be the lubricating oil. Always remember this and you will never have the problem of a seized engine.

Move Up From A Riding Mower to a Lawn Tractor

If you have a large lawn, and need to do a lot of hauling or digging, it may be time to move up from a small riding mower to a more powerful lawn tractor. You’ll save a great deal of time in mowing your lawn that you can then spend doing something a bit more enjoyable.

Of course, lots of people enjoy the feeling of power that mowing a lawn gives them. Richard Widmark, in an article in Architectural Digest way back in 1991, said, “Mowing is very satisfying. It’s all about wanting everything to be neat and under control.”

Large lawns take a lot of water, and a lot of fertilizer, to look their best all year round, unless you are careful to choose those types of grasses that don’t need a lot of water, and typically don’t need a lot of fertilizer. Native grasses are growing in popularity, as opposed to importing “exotics” from other climate regions, and then forcing them to grow where they don’t normally grow. However, that’s an issue for another time. Let’s get back to lawn tractors.

Buying A Lawn Tractor

Treat your purchase of a lawn tractor as you would that of buying a car or any other means of transport. It is after all a major investment. Visit the showrooms of various manufacturers (or look at their sites on the web) to see what kind of features each model has, and what their quality and reliability ratings are from such independent consumer groups as Consumer Reports. If possible, test drive the tractor.

Engines

There are three types of engines on a tractor – air-cooled and liquid-cooled gasoline engines, or liquid-cooled diesel engines. Each one has its advantages…and its attendant costs.

Accessories

The basic cost of a tractor usually does look quite attractive…and then you learn the costs of those add-ons, or accessories. Just like a car, the nicer the accessories, the more expensive the model will turn out to be.

Accessories consist of such things as canopies over the driving cockpit to keep you protected from the sun on hot days, and grass collection bags. Cutting decks are considered accessories. They vary in width. A smaller cutting deck will come standard on the tractor, but you can replace it with a larger deck, for a fee.

Safety

Lawn tractors have a low center of gravity. This makes it possible for them to mow on slopes – there’s less chance of them tipping over. However, most accidents with lawn tractors do happen on slopes – no matter how low the center of gravity a steep slope will have the last laugh. The best thing to do is plant ground cover on the slope which will prevent erosion – and yet never need mowing.

Always wear ear protectors and safety glasses and sturdy shoes. Never have a “lawn mower race” – if you like to get some speed out of your tractor do it on a track in a recognized event – not on your own lawn.

Never mow with an audience. Kids may become distracted and run in front or behind you and be hit by flying rocks. Never mow with passengers.

If your mower jams, turn everything off. Clear any jam with a tool – not with your bare hand.

A manual will come with your lawn tractor. Read it, and keep it in a safe place so you can refer to it when needed.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

One of the most frequent reasons dogs are taken to an animal shelter is because of their barking. Owners and/or neighbors cannot tolerate the noise barking creates.

When you are considering dog ownership, it is very important to check on the characteristics of the breed, you are considering, as some breeds are natural “barkers.” If possible see the parents, ask questions of the breeder and talk to people that have the same breed and get their input. Even if you are considering a mixed-breed dog look into the breeds that comprise the makeup of the dog.

Excessive barking can mean an end to a pet relationship before it even had a chance to begin.

Why do dogs bark?

Well, truthfully it is fun. It is also a form of communication. A dog bark can be a warning, it can be a welcome sound or it can be a constantly annoying noise.

In case you did not know it, dogs have many varieties of “the bark” from a soft “woof” to a very loud growling type of bark. Each bark means something to the dog. A bark can signify territorial protection, a show of dominance, or an expression of a specific need. If you can develop a good “barking ear” you will be able to understand the differences.

Why do some dogs bark so much?

Believe it or not, some of it can be traced to our own behavior toward our dogs or it can be a natural genetic trait. In many ways we condition them to bark.

Think of this, “a barking dog gets attention” and that is what most dogs want. The fact that we might be reprimanding the dog, matters not, as long as the dog is getting what it wants.

Sometimes dogs bark because they are uncomfortable. Your dog might be hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, or have to eliminate. If he/she does not bark, how will you know?

Make certain your dog has shelter from the heat and /or rain if it is outside, along with plenty of water.

Do not tie up a dog and expect it to be quiet all day. A tied up dog can get hung up on so many things and possibly hurt itself, besides being in one place all day is “BORING.” A dog needs physical exercise and stimulation.

An outside dog has many things to make it bark, other dogs barking, noise from trucks and cars, people walking by, boredom and loneliness.

To relieve the stress and anxiety your dog is feeling, if you are not available to do it on a daily basis, hire a neighborhood teen to walk your dog every day and possibly play with it for a while. Exercise is a great stress reliever and a tired dog will bark less.

Some dogs feel very needy and will bark constantly in order to get your attention.

To remedy a needy barking dog, it will TAKE A GREAT DEAL OF PATIENCE on your part.

Why?

Simply because you are going to have to IGNORE the barking and the dog. Easily said, but very hard to do.

A needy dog is looking for any kind of attention and that is why you must NOT speak to the dog, look at the dog or go near it while it is barking.

Yelling loudly or for that matter screaming to the dog to “be quiet” will not help at all. The yelling once again is giving the dog the attention it wants, plus it will think you are playing a game with it.

Hitting, spanking or beating the dog will not have a good result either. You will create fear in the dog and when it sees you, it will stop, but turn your back and it will be back at it again.

Once the dog stops barking, praise, pets and treats are in order.

This will not be a quick fix, but in order for it to work you must be consistent and ignore the dog, even though you might be tempted to tape his/her mouth shut.

Reconditioning the behavior pattern can also be done by having the dog do something different when it starts barking, like going to find a toy and getting a treat when he/she finds it. Giving the dog a “job” that takes its mind off of barking is the thought behind this idea.

Once you start the training process it is very important you do not deviate from it for any reason until the dog has the “no barking” thought firmly implanted in its head.

Granted there are times when you do want the dog to bark, so choose the barking behavior that is bugging you the most and work solely on that.

If you are living in an apartment and your dog is barking while you are away, there are several reasons for that and each one is handled differently.

Separation anxiety will cause a dog to bark constantly. Many times you, the owner, are the cause of it. If you find yourself worrying about leaving the dog while you are getting ready and you find yourself going through all that wonderful “baby dog talk” we have been known to go through. STOP IT!

What you are doing is creating nervous anxiety and upsetting your dog.

Instead, do not look, talk or pet your dog while you are getting ready to leave. Ignore your pet completely, don’t even think about he/she during the process of getting ready. Concentrate on work or whatever you are going to do.

Just before you are ready to walk out the door, get your pet’s favorite toy and several treats, put them in a room away from the door and without a GOODBYE, leave. Nine chances out of ten, your dog will accept the fact you are gone and will be quiet.

Whether you believe it or not, pets pick up on our anxiety and respond to it.

If outside noises are the trigger for your pet’s barking, try keeping him/her in a room that is not near the street. Play a radio with soft classical music or keep the TV on low while you are gone, keep the blinds closed do something to keep the dog away from windows. Use empty boxes on the chair or couch to keep your pet from getting on the furniture and looking out the window.

Now if you have a dog that for the most part is kept outside and its barking is annoying your neighbors. That is a wee bit more tricky, as you are not home to take control of the situation. I am not a firm believer in using things “mechanical” to stop a dog from misbehaving, however I know that sometimes, it is the only way to control an annoying habit, when you are not there to take control.

There are “ultrasonic outdoor electronic systems” that operate either with an adapter or batteries, they emit a high pitched sound that can only be heard by the dog and they stop when the dog stops barking. They are available for large yards and small yards. I am told that they are quite reliable in stopping unnecessary barking.

For inside the house or apartment there is another gadget similar to the yard one, that even allows you to use your voice commands to talk to the dog .

I would advise looking into these items, only if all else fails and you are at your wit’s end.

Solving the barking problem will take time and effort, along with patience and understanding. Try to determine “why” your dog is barking, if you can solve that problem, you are well on your way to the solution.

Exercise and socialization are such an important part of a dog’s life. A dog is not supposed to sit and be quiet. Dogs were created to be hunters and protectors, we are the ones that domesticated them.

Dogs lived in the wild in packs, they had loads of fun with each other, they obeyed pack rules and followed a leader. We are the ones that changed that and as a result we have to do our part.

We are now the leaders, we are the “alpha dog,” and that does not mean beat the dog into submission, it means provide exercise, social stimulation, proper food, medical care and most of all love.

There has been a time in my life when I felt like the “Pied Piper” of dogs. At one time we lived in an area, where people seemed to find it an appropriate place to drop off unwanted dogs. We had a 550 foot driveway leading to our house and somehow the dropped off dogs found their way to our door. Most of the dogs dropped off were “in the family way” and at one period, we had 32 puppies under our roof and care.
