Overall, it’s great book, especially for someone who works out at home and needs help with changing up their workouts.

Health and Safety Training – Noise in the Workplace

Many employees are not aware of the numerous health problems noise can cause. Noise is something we’re so used to tuning out but if it is loud enough it can still affect the way we normally function. Loud frequencies of sound can prevent us from understanding crucial information which someone is communicating to us and also trigger health problems. Through health and safety training we can learn how to prevent hearing loss and minimize noise related stress to our bodies.

If we are exposed to loud decibels of noise for an extended period of time our bodies can suffer from hypertension, high blood pressure, ulcers and other serious health problems. Safety Training regulations emphasize the use of ear plugs, ear muffs, or other standard hearing protectors in work environments that have abnormally high decibels of noise. Hearing protectors cancel out most of the sound we are exposed to allowing us to function normally during our day to day tasks. By learning how to use hearing protectors in health and safety training we will be able to perform our tasks without compromising our health.

Safety posters put up in high decibel noise areas will remind employees to put on hearing protectors to prevent hearing loss. Safety posters will outline the steps to wearing protective gear correctly so employees do not suffer from bodily harm while working in these high risk areas. Usually workplaces that expose their staff to high decibels of noise regularly perform audiometric testing to determine the hearing sensitivity of each employee. The test will conclude if each employee’s hearing sensitivity is within normal range. If a physician finds that significant hearing damage has occurred other hearing protector and safety training options are explored to prevent further injury to employees. In certain cases the employees have a right to refuse to perform the tasks at hand until sufficient hearing protectors are provided to maintain their health and well being in the workplace.

Health and safety guidelines help staff become aware of the warning signs that noise levels are at abnormally high decibels and the steps to take to avoid further exposure. Health and safety training not only covers occupational noise exposure but also other important topics such as fire safety, electrical safety, chemical safety, and manual handling. Safety posters are available in the market with all of these topics in mind to outline the important safety procedures in a variety of emergency situations. Safety posters can be put up in bathrooms, high risk areas, in the cafeteria and break room so staff will take the time to read them.

With regular health and safety training in the workplace you can ensure the safety and well being of all your employees and staff members. Browse online for a variety of helpful resources to efficiently conduct health and safety training within your workplace. Some of the notable resources used for health and safety training include safety awareness DVDs, Safety Posters, e-learning software, booklets, ergonomic equipment, trainer guides, basic first aid supplies and more. With so much information and resources available in the market there is no reason why every office and workplace should not be conducting health and safety training for their employees.

10 Tips For Hearing Better Longer From a Hearing Health Pro

Most of us take hearing for granted. It’s just there.

What we don’t consider is the delicate nature and intricate structure of the ear that enables us to not only hear but interpret what we hear. Hearing is one of the five senses we use to learn about our environment and those who share life with us. And hearing loss is rarely “curable.”

In fact, the best hearing care is preventative care – things you can do yourself so you hear better longer. They’re simple steps and precautions that will equip you to hear well all of your life.

So hear on:

1. Avoid loud noises even for a short time. Hearing loss, called traumatic hearing loss, can occur with one firecracker or shotgun round under certain conditions. Many returning veterans experience traumatic hearing loss caused by nearby explosions. Always cover your ears to protect your hearing.

2. Avoid long-term exposure to loud noise. It doesn’t have to be a bang or pop that damages your hearing. The loud background noise in a factory, over time, will cause noise induced hearing loss or NIHL. Wear ear protection.

3. Don’t purchase cheap hearing amplifiers. You often see these dangerous devices for “only $14.95 plus shipping and handling.” The danger of using these devices is that the listeners increase volume levels high enough to hear, but also high enough to do additional damage to the already-damaged hearing mechanism.

4. Get your hearing tested. A no-brainer. Even infants can and should be tested and if hearing loss is detected, these babies can be fitted with hearing aids at two months. If you experience a change in your hearing or if you’re over 50, get some baseline readings and some help from a hearing health specialist.

5. Go unplugged. If you listen to your MP3 player for more than 90 minutes at one time you start to damage the ear mechanics. Give your ears time to recover every 90 minutes and, for goodness sake, turn it down, will ya?

6. Wear protective gear at work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide adequate hearing protection but the regs are rarely enforced. That means if your workplace is noisy and you don’t wear ear plugs or cups, you’re only hurting yourself. Wear protective gear even if you have to buy it yourself!

7. Wear protective gear at home. Noise cancelling headphones block out ambient noise and protect the delicate hearing parts when mowing the lawn, vacuuming the rug or engaged in other loud activities.

8. Hearing loss can occur at any age. Most of us think of hearing loss as something only old folks face. Wrong.

Hearing loss can be caused by age, sure, but it can also be caused by trauma or disease or even common medications.

9. Cut down on the aspirin. Numerous studies show a connection between prolonged, heavy use of aspirin and aspirin substitutes and hearing loss. In fact, there are many ototoxic drugs – drugs that damage hearing as a side effect. Talk to your physician about your aspirin intake and hearing loss.

10. Don’t clean your ears! That’s right. Most of us have been taught to remove excess ear wax and other debris from the ear canal with a cotton swab. This is dangerous. It’s very easy to damage the ear drum for one thing.

For another, ear wax is actually normal and beneficial. It traps dust and other particles before they can reach the sensitive ear drum. Using a cotton swab to ream out your ears removes beneficial oils and actually pushes the debris further into the ear canal, in some cases impacting ear wax to the point of hearing loss.

If you produce an excess amount of ear wax, purchase an OTC ear wax softener and gently rinse your ears with warm water to remove excess ear wax. No bobby pins, toothpicks or fingers. Clean the outer ear gently and dry with a towel. Done.

Look, hearing is something that disappears gradually. There’s a cumulative effect on the hearing mechanism – the longer, the louder, the worse the damage done. Take steps today to protect your hearing health for all of those tomorrows.
