New Shady Brady Hats Review

If you’ve watched Julia Roberts carefully in The Runaway Bride, you are sure to have noticed the classy straw hat she was wearing. Now any one would ask why a straw hat of all the fancy things available these days! However, in reality these straw hats, produced by Shady Brady Hats are regarded as one of the coolest accessories that one could possess. Known both for their style and quality, these hats have been in the business of hat making for more than two decades. In most likelihood, they are going to be around for at least a couple more.

Where to Make a Purchase

The Village Hat Shop generally houses close-knit hat corporations that are operated by the owners. These United States made Shady Brady Hats are worth every penny. They are available in high-end retail shops only so do not go looking for them in your neighborhood super market. I think that already speaks highly of the brands reputation and the kind of quality it offers.

Straw Hat: A Clever Pick

Now what makes these straw hats so special? They are made of an unbreakable natural fiber called raffia straws. So when you are traveling with them, they won’t get de-shaped because of pressure in your bag. So you see, they are highly packable. They also come with a warranty period of one-year and are made in dark colors lending them a classic ad sophisticated look. Tough looking, the brims are wired and shapeable.

The Cool Cowboy Hat: A Smart Pick

The other widely popular pick is the Cowboy Hat range. They have a subjected to dry heat to make them water resistant and are very durable. They come with cushioned sweatbands and toughened brim reinforced with wire.

The Specialty of the Hats

These hats are crafted by hand lending a unique look to every product. Special, treated leather is used for different parts to make them hardy and last for years. The coolest thing about Shady Brady Hats is that the brim never loses shape; and even if they do, they can be re-shaped with ease. The brims are particularly wide giving you adequate protection from the sun. And for all you ladies, the cushioned sweatbands prevent the sweat from falling to your face, keeping you make-up the way you had done it. Shady Brady Hats are generally available in two kinds: one type gives way for ventilation while the others do not.

Take Your Pick

If you are still pondering over buying it, I suggest you look at the reputation Shady Brady Hats have in terms of durability, quality and style. Television commercials host a hundred ads on straw hats. But none of them will serve all your needs like Shady Brady Straw Hats. If you are spending your hard earned money, go for Shady Brady Hats, they are absolutely worth it. Whether you opt for straw hats or leather or even felt, once you start wearing the Shady Brady Hats you’ll know what I mean.

Film Review – Funny Games (2007)

BOTTOM LINE: “Funny Games” has some interesting potential with its two antagonists and self-referential treatment, but the confrontational anti-violence themes get lost in a very ugly and mean-spirited execution of a story that will do nothing but leave a bad taste in your mouth.

THE GOOD: Director Michael Haneke has a dislike for violence and its role in the media, particularly in the media’s ability to sensationalise violence for its own ends. In directing “Funny Games”, a shot-by-shot remake of his own 1997 Austrian horror film, he attempts to confront you with how vicious and nasty real violence actually is. This is a film that makes you feel the brutality and ugliness of violence, particularly as nobody is spared. A young family on vacation at their holiday house are suddenly taken hostage by a pair of well spoken male psychopaths who proceed to torture and kill them through the use of sadistic games. In some ways, the realness of the violence in this film, the propensity to focus on the psychological aspects of it as opposed to outright blood and gore, and the number of self-referential nods to it demonstrate how disgusting the torture-porn genre which include movies such as “Saw” and “Hostel” really are in using this horror as an entertainment. Throughout the film, the two psychos nod and wink to the camera, as if actively asking you to participate in their fun, even asking us at one point to bet on who will be the victor between them and their victims. There is a nice demeaning banter between the two psychos that can at times be amusing and the two actors, Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet, do a very good job of portraying two deeply disturbed individuals who execute their brutality through a thick layer of politeness and supposed etiquette. Naomi Watts puts in an excellent performance as Ann, adding a layer of depth that might have otherwise been absent. “Funny Games” has the potential to be a unique take on violence in the media.

THE BAD: The experience of watching this film vacillates between total disgust and boredom. The film is disgusting in its mental and physical torture that it portrays, and it is boring in every other aspect for its slow direction and lacklustre visuals, not to mention some extremely long-winded shots, one of which lasts for ten minutes with action that could have been wrapped up quicker. I guess the idea is to make it as real as possible, but then this is a film and artistic licence is always a given. The film plays with genre conventions by setting up the possibility of escape and then turns them on their head; not necessarily a bad thing, but when for example the son is the first one brutally shot, or George (Tim Roth) is gauged off screen with a kitchen knife before being shot in front of Ann, and the absolutely ridiculous scene of one of the psychos using a remote control to literally rewind the action to get the upper hand after something goes wrong for them, the film does nothing except turn you against it. There may be an anti-violence lesson in here, but the ugly, mean-spirited and uninspired direction of this film will do everything to sabotage that lesson and its ability to teach you anything about the brutality of what you are seeing.

Motorola S9 Headphones Review

The styling of this headset is one of the greatest assets of this headset. It is very well built. It is a black design with red rubber coverings, but I have seen an all black one. The S9 comes in a very small package. It is hardly noticeable when being worn. You will be ready to hit the gym with this sleek headset.

One of the downsides of the S9 is the button sensitivity. They are extremely touchy! You will need to work hard to control this beast if you have large fingers. On the right you will find the Next/Previous and Play/Stop buttons, and on the left are the Volume and call controls. This is nice since it is easy to keep them straight. You will get audio feedback while increasing and decreasing the music volume or changing tracks. Though I had some issues with the track controls I have read many review of people who love them.

Well how do they sound? I have been very happy with the quality of sound the headphones produce. The audio is reproduced richly with bright highs and pumping bass. The only problems I have had are infrequent skipping. I have tested the device many times and have not experienced the skipping and thought it was resolved, but alas it does occur on occasion. Motorola after receiving numerous complaints of the skipping issue are investigating the problem.

Call quality is not quite as good as the musical reproduction of the headset. I have heard scratches and interference while on calls. Also the person I was talking to has heard the interference. The calls are not stereo also any you only hear the other person on the call through the left speaker of the headphones.

The headband is not as comfortable as I would like. It seems that my hair is continuously getting caught up in it when trying to remove them. The earbuds do not really contour to the shape of my ear very well and the arm that goes over the ear cuts into the tops of my ear a bit. Maybe I have irregular ears because I have not seen this as a common complaint in other reviews. The S9 is very small and lightweight though which helps especially when exercising or doing outdoor activities.

The S9 seems to be geared toward active people. The S9 is supposed to be sweat resistant, but I sweat profusely when exercising, probably much more than the average person. The S9 seems to get clogged up with sweat and the sound production gets deadened during exercise.

Overall the Motorola S9 Bluetooth headphones are not too bad compared with other offerings available. They have a sleek design and pretty good sound quality despite their few shortcomings.

Book Review – Remember Who You Are – Seven Stages on a Woman’s Journey of Spirit

Linda Carroll’s Remember Who You Are is a spiritual rather than religious book for women. It is subtitled ‘Seven Stages on a Woman’s Journey of Spirit’, and as this suggests, the book focuses on the stages of the spiritual process, apart from any particular religion. The seven stages Ms. Carroll identifies are Forgetting, Remembering, Exploring, Practicing, Shadows on the Path, Reclaiming, and Acceptance. Forgetting is “losing [our] connection to essential spiritual self” and Remembering is any spiritual experience or insight that helps us to reconnect. The other stages are all steps in the process of seeking that spiritual self. Although these stages are presented linearly, Ms. Carroll tells us that often “the stages overlap, circle back, and intertwine, forming a pattern that reflects the multifaceted quality of the feminine spirit.”

Of course, these stages aren’t intrinsically feminine, and each are described in the mystic writings of all the world’s major religions. But two things make Remember Who You Are a uniquely feminine book, and a beautiful read. First, Ms. Carroll incorporates dozens (maybe hundreds) of poems, quotes, and passages from fabulous women poets and authors such as Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Alice Walker, Annie Dillard, Virginia Woolf and more. Second, she includes a comprehensive guide to using the book as part of a women’s book club or spiritual support group, with detailed guidelines for forming, organizing, and conducting such a group.

Ms. Carroll herself clearly loves poetry, and her prose reflects that. The chapters are more like musings or contemplations of each spiritual stage, and she seamlessly integrates the poems and passages of others. Each chapter gets to the point quickly, and thus the book is a little gem, at only a little over one hundred pages. The Practicing and Shadows chapters were my personal favorites, each exploring ways we can get sidetracked or distracted by our own spiritual practices. As a mother of young children, I especially enjoyed a story about a mother attempting to start a regular morning meditation practice, only to end up frustrated and angry as she is continually interrupted by her young boys’ demands. As Ms. Carroll tells us, “[Lily realized] her practice was hurting all three of them. What her true practice should be…was to use every event in the day as an opportunity for kindness and patience to emerge. Nowhere was this practice more important than with her children.”

Another favorite section of mine, ‘The Secret Club’ tackles the spiritual ego, and the feeling of exclusivity and specialness that can easily arise. Ms. Carroll quotes Julia Cameron here, from her book God is No Laughing Matter:

“Sometimes when you talk to them, Very Spiritual People close their eyes and sort of nod sagely as if they were on heroin. They do this in a lot of settings where they are being officially spiritual. You’re at a spiritual talk, for example, or a concert, and all of a sudden, whoops, there go the eyes…Very Spiritual People scare me to death. They know the secrets. It’s like a spiritual clubhouse.”

As this quote demonstrates, much of Remember Who You Are is probably most meaningful to women who already consider themselves on a spiritual journey. However, the reflection questions at the end of each chapter, and the guidelines for using the book as part of a women’s group, help to make the material accessible and relevant to anyone reading it as part of such a group.
