Auerbach, Lera – Images from Childhood ; “After the War (The Field of the Dead)” (2000)
Dedicated to Hexameron for his great contribution on youtube. She was born in Chelyabinsk, a city in the Urals bordering Siberia. Auerbach made her Carnegie Hall debut in May 2002 performing her own Suite for Violin, Piano and Orchestra with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica. Ms. Auerbach’s music has been presented at Carnegie Hall each season since then.[2] In 2005, she was awarded the Hindemith Prize by the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany. Auerbach’s compositions have been commissioned and performed by a wide array of artists, orchestras and ballet companies including Gidon Kremer, the Kremerata Baltica, David Finckel, Wu Han, Vadim Gluzman, the Tokyo, Kuss, Parker and Petersen String Quartets, the SWR and NDR (Hannover) Symphony Orchestras, NDR Hamburg and the Royal Danish Ballet. Auerbachs music has also been commissioned and performed by leading Festivals throughout the world including Caramoor, Lucerne, Lockenhaus, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein. Auerbach has appeared as solo pianist at such venues as the Bolshoi Saal of the Moscow Conservatory, Tokyo’s Opera City, New York’s Lincoln Center, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Oslo’s Konzerthaus, Chicago’s Symphony Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center. Auerbach holds degrees in piano and composition from The Juilliard School, where she studied piano with Joseph Kalichstein and composition with Milton Babbitt. Pianist Vestard Shimkus plays 2nd movement of Piano Concerto No.1 by Johannes Brahms. With Czech Philharmonic conducted by Lawrence Foster. Recorded live at Kissinger Sommer festival, Bad Kissingen, Germany, June 15th, 2008. Audio only. The photograph was taken during the concert. Vestard Shimkus (Vestards Šimkus) studied in Riga, Los Angeles, Madrid and Munich with professors Dmitri Bashkirov, Daniel Pollack, Vadim Suchanov and others. Has also studied composition with Peteris Vasks. Among his prizes are 1st prize at the international Bad-Kissinger KlavierOlympiade piano competition (Germany, 2007), Los Angeles Liszt Piano Competition (2002) and Stockholm Performing Artists Competition (2001). In 2002 he was awarded with the Grand Music Prize of Latvia (2002) and “White Star” order of Estonia (2005). Shimkus has given performances throughout Europe, the USA, the Middle-East and Japan. Festival appearances have included Bergen Festival (Norway), Lockenhaus Gidon Kremer Festival (Austria), Kissinger Sommer Festival, Al Bustan Festival (Lebanon), amongst others. He has performed with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, KREMERata Baltica, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and Tallin Chamber Orchestra and has collaborated with such conductors as Lawrence Foster, Vassily Sinaisky, Eri Klas, Woldemar Nelsson, Anu Tali, Jonathan Darlington, Andris Nelsons and Olari Elts.
