Is a Backpack Blower Your Friend or Your Neighbor’s Foe?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Those who own a backpack blower have come to love the power and convenience it offers. As these gas powered engines crank out hundreds of CFM of air flow, they also emit high decibel noise levels. The raw debris clearing power is adored by the owner, but neighbors often scorn the noise levels that interrupt their relaxing day off. The following 7 tips can help to ensure that your neighbor is as fond of your blower as you are.

Tip 1 – Observe reasonable hours of operation. Avoid early morning and evening usable of your blower to limit the chances of interrupting sleep or quiet time. Your neighbor will appreciate this on his or her morning to sleep in.

Tip 2 – Make sure that your leaf or debris problem doesn’t become your neighbor’s problem. Ensure that you do not blow excessive debris onto your neighbor’s yard. When using your blower, blow your debris inward, away from your neighbor’s land.

Tip 3 – Control your dust by dampening leaves or debris before blowing them. Watch your dust and the direction that the wind is blowing. If neighbors in that direction are outdoors, consider delaying your blowing.

Tip 4 – Lower your RPMs to lower your noise. Most backpack blowers have a trigger throttle or a hip throttle. Depressing the throttle only half way will still give ample power at a much reduced noise rate.

Tip 5 – Ensure that you observe all of the recommended safe operating procedures. Be aware of when your neighbors, their children, or their pets are outdoors, and don’t cause any flying debris that could result in injury. You don’t want your nearby resident to view your blower as a danger.

Tip 6 – Talk to your neighbors about your blower and your plans for using it. Determine if there is a time that works best for them for you to do your blowing work. You will often find that this showing of respect is met with appreciation, and they will be more tolerable because of it.

Tip 7 – If you want your neighbor to really be fond of your blower, then do them a favor sometime and blow their leaves or debris into a pile for them. Just imagine how elated your neighbor would be when returning from work to find a leaf-free yard.

Which is Better, the South Fork Or the North Fork of the American River?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

This is a question that often comes up for first-time rafters in Northern California. Whether you choose to raft the South Fork or the Middle Fork of the American River, you will have a great time. People often focus on the “class” of the river in order to determine whether they are going to see “more” or “bigger” rapids. This simply is not true. The higher the “class,” the more TECHNICALLY difficult the rapid; size is not necessarily a factor. A quick presentation of river classification will be helpful in determining which type of river is right for you.

The first thing to be aware of is that the single highest rapid classifies the river. For example, a river filled with nothing but class II rapids with just one class V is still a class V river. While there are several different systems for classifying a river, the I-VI system is the most common in the United States.

  • Class I: easy, slightly rippling, swift moving water with few to no obstacles
  • Class II: easy, rippling water, some whitewater, swift moving, few obstacles and most require minimal maneuvering to avoid
  • Class III: moderate, typically requires a guide, powerful hydraulics with tall rapids, some maneuvering required for set up and minimal maneuvering within rapids
  • Class IV: moderate-advanced, requires a guide, powerful hydraulics with tall rapids, maneuvering while in the rapid is common to safely navigate the rapid
  • Class V: advanced, intense hydraulics and or technical lines need to be navigated to safely enter and exit rapids. Previous experience required and good physical fitness often a must. Professional guides a must
  • Class VI: un-navigable. this can be anything from a trickling creek to Niagara Falls

Most commercial whitewater rafting falls within the class II to Class V range. If we review the list and we compare a class III river and a class IV, the differences are nominal with regard to power of rapid. The real difference is whether you’ll be required to paddle through the rapid to help safely navigate. Surely some of the Class IV rapids can be more powerful but by and large the difference is in duration and or maneuvering.

If river classification is the only criteria important to your decision-making, you are done. However, there are other considerations to be aware of. The South Fork offers a whole host of features that the Middle Fork does not have. These features may or may not be part of your decision-making process but are worth noting in order to be aware of your options, if nothing else.

The South Fork of the American River is one of the most rafted rivers in ALL of the United States, year in and year out. It is popular for many reasons: it’s easy to get to, it offers one-day and two-day rafting options (so it is doable in a weekend), there are many campground options, and there are an abundance of rafting companies operating on this river. Additionally, the rapids are fairly consistent, and the class III rating promises predictable hydraulics that get the blood pumping but are manageable for wide age ranges (7-years to 70+). The shuttles to and from river put-in and take-out are not overly long and tiresome. Access to the riverside is relatively easy, there are no hikes and or rough trails to get the gear to the river and back to the vehicles.

The South Fork of the American River is truly a river that accommodates a wide variety of people, it has a relatively long season (May to October), predictable water flows with the damn arrangement, is located in the historic river valley where gold was discovered and it’s an affordable vacation.

Famous rapids on the 21-mile South Fork of the American River are Meat Grinder, the Triple Threats, Trouble Maker, Satan’s Cesspool and Hospital Bar.

The Middle Fork has much of the same as the South Fork. The Middle Fork is dam controlled and has relatively consistent flows. Its season is not as long as the South Fork’s. The Middle Fork does offer bigger hydraulics, rapids that require maneuvering, a beautiful waterfall that needs to be walked around and the famous Tunnel Chute. The Middle Fork is more remote than the South Fork, so the shuttle rides are longer (but still tolerable). The Middle Fork offers one-day rafting from most companies, with a two-day wilderness option from others. The Middle Fork does not have campgrounds and convenience stores nearby; once in the river canyon you remain there until the trip is over, and is some 20+miles long. The Middle Fork is a step up in difficulty when one reaches the higher rated rapids, otherwise, it offers longer stretches of calm water, is less crowded and has a remote beauty, which should be taken in and enjoyed while the trip lasts.

Famous rapids on the Middle Fork include Panic Alley, Tunnel Chute, Chunder, Cartwheel, Duck Soup and Parking Lot. There is a portage on the Middle Fork around Ruck-a-Chucky Falls (which simply means that the gear needs to be carried around the rapid via rivers edge).

Which river speaks to you? It really depends on what you are looking for. As a rafting operator, I find that the convenience of the South Fork is the most appropriate option for my guests. However, both rivers offer different challenges, dimensions, and appeal, and the ever-changing water flows always offer a new adventure!

Useful Tips When Buying Yard Blowers

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are gardening tools that propel air from a nozzle. Its goal is to move yard debris like leaves. It is also called leaf blowers. These blowers are generally powered by two-stroke engines or electric motors. Since there were issues on air pollution using these two-stroke engines, four-stroke engines were introduced.

blowers or leaf blowers are handheld, self-contained units but there are also backpack mounted units with handheld wands. This is the more ergonomic type for prolonged usage.

There are also units that can suck in small twigs as well as leaves with the use of a vacuum and then, shred them to a bag. These units are called “blower vacs”.

Dom Quinto is the inventor of blowers or leaf blowers. Originally, these units are for spraying agricultural chemicals. However, manufacturers learned that most of their consumers take out the chemical dispensing parts and just use the blowers on their lawns and gardens. Since then, its use has evolved and is currently even used in various amateur construction projects.

Blower Buying Tips

Since blowers or leaf blowers are commonly used for gardening purposes, there have been issues about its noise levels. In fact, there are cities and towns now that have established laws regarding its usage. With this in mind, make sure you get updates about its use and restrictions before you buy an electric leaf blower or gas leaf blower.

Some of the top brands in the market are Toro, Stihl, Ryobi, Black & Decker as well as Echo, Craftsman, Poulan, Homelite, Tanaka and Husgvarna. Many favor the Toro Super Blower Vac51591 because it does all the chores like blowing and vacuuming your yard. It only weighs 7 pounds and it can generate air speeds of up to 210 mph. It is easy to switch from blower mode to vacuum mode. It also has zero emissions which means, it is environmentally friendly and not very noisy. However, since there’s a cord attached to it, there will be restrictions on the coverage area, especially if you’ve a very large yard. This leaf blower costs $60.

If you’re all set on buying a blower, you can first head to Lowes, HomeDepot or any household power tool supply store. This way, you’ll have a better idea when it comes to the features, weight and noise levels of your prospect. For Stihl products, only Stihl dealers can sell them.

Once you’ve checked the different features and styles of your prospect, you can just do your shopping online. The net has a wide range of sites that sell and ship. Just make sure it is a trusted site before you go on and give them your credit card information.

Who Needs Backpack Leaf Blowers?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you wondering who needs backpack leaf blowers? If you have a lot of beautiful trees in your yard, you probably have a lot of leaves to pick up in the fall. If your walkways or other areas you want cleared of leaves and other debris is further away from an electrical outlet than 150 feet, you will want a gas leaf blower. The backpack variety is the most powerful because it’s a professional or commercial grade blower. It’s great for people with a lawn care business or for people with lots of work to do their yard. You’ll probably be shocked at the amount of power the backpack leaf blower has. They’ve been reported to be able to move small rocks and limbs too.

It’s true, this piece of machinery can be a bit pricey, but you’ll get lots of use out of it. You’ll surely put it to good use in the fall when leaves are cluttering up your lawn and walkways almost daily. It’s a great way to keep your deck or patio clear and also to keep your lawn looking pristine. Since the backpack leaf blower is so powerful, you can actually blow on almost any surface, and rounding up the leaves into a pile on the lawn is no problem. You’ll also get lots of use out of it in the summer after you mow. Indeed, whether you use a push lawn mower, riding mower, or a zero turn, the leaf blower is a great companion. It makes short work of clearing out the fresh grass clippings. You’ll even find a few uses for it in the spring to help clear out all the clippings you’ve done with your electric or cordless hedge trimmer. The only season that you may not get to use the blower at all would be during the winter, when it’s all about your snow blower.

There are a lot of options to choose from, so be sure you do some research, look at reviews and ratings of well known brand names. A few good ones to look into are Husqvarna, Redmax, Homelite, and Echo. Take into consideration the type of job you need to do with your blower and see if the descriptions and reviews match your needs before narrowing down your selection.

Tips to Organize Your Patio & Porch

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are a night owl or an early bird, work with your own natural timing of energy to help you get the job of organizing everything done without to much trouble of running out of steam.

1. Pick up any clutter or garbage and dispose of properly.

2. Anything that you no longer use or want that is still in useable shape should be given away or donated to charity.

3. Next, move everything off the patio or porch and out of the way while you are organizing your patio and porch.

4. Sweep away all dirt and grime.

5. If your patio or porch can withstand water, take the garden hose and spray down all ceilings, walls, windows and floors.

6. Next use an out door broom for scrubbing any dirt or grime that was not washed away with plain water. You can add a small amount of soap to a bucket of water for cleaning.

7. Rinse the soap off with the water hose again, and take a break while the area dries.

8. On the other hand, if you are still eager to go, and have the hose in hand, wash out any outside garbage cans, spray off the sidewalks or wash out the barbeque grill. If you have a wall type barrier for placing things out of sight, put the garbage cans and grill out of sight.

9. If there are windows, wash those as well, and remember to clean and replace any window screens.

10. Once the area has dried, and you can always use a well-placed fan to help the drying process along much quicker. Begin choosing just what items you will place back on the patio or porch.

11. If you have large furniture, place those first, such as a tables or porch swings. Then place the other items in complimentary areas of the porch or patio.

12. To catch sand and dirt before it gets on the porch or patio, you can place a basket or bin at the step edge and ask everyone to take their shoes off before entering the area and tracking in dirt and grime.

13. A heavy outdoor rug can be placed outside the door, and on the inside place a lighter weight rug, this will also help cut down on a lot of dirt entering the house.

14. If you are limited in shelf space, you can use a plastic bookcase for outdoor storage on the porch and patio.

15. Hanging baskets along the inside ceiling of the area will add some much needed storage space, as well as keeping some things out of a child’s reach.

16. If you have special outdoor furniture that is made of wood, find out the proper way to clean and care for them as this will add years of life to a piece of good outdoor furniture.

17. Once you have your patio and porch clean and organized it really only take a little upkeep every now and then to keep it looking nice, so be sure not to forget to do some outdoor housekeeping while straightening up the inside. You will be glad that you did.

A Telescopic Ladder is Portable and Can Be Stored Just About Anywhere

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If there is one aspect of modern living that we cannot afford to go without with, then that is convenience. What people nowadays want is something that can make their lives easier. Technology has tremendously advanced during the past decades, and there are numerous innovative implements that can certainly make our lives easier. One example of that is a telescopic ladder.

It cannot make distant objects appear large like a real telescope, but this ladder functions somewhat like a telescope. Remember that optical telescope that you use to play pirates when you were young? Remember how you can extend and retract it to make things large or small? Well, the telescopic ladder has that extend-retract mechanism. Let us say that this ladder has an overall height of 12.5 feet; when it is fully retracted, it collapses down to just 2.5 feet.

Advantages of a Telescopic Ladder

Easy Storage

Because it can be retracted to a compact size, a telescopic ladder would not pose a storage issue for you. Some people who do not have extra space to store their ladder often leave it outdoors. Leaving your ladder to the elements is not good since it may easily get damaged from being exposed to constant cold and heat. If you have an already cramped garage or work shed, then you do not have to worry about where you will place your ladder: you can just retract it and place it anywhere in your storage area.

Light to Carry

People often complain that they get back pains from carrying their lengthy ladders to the work area. DIY work at home is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime and not a burdensome task. To avoid getting constant muscle pains or possible injuries from carrying heavy ladders, you can just get a telescopic ladder. Because it is made of lightweight material, you will not have a problem carrying it to your work area.

Portable

Got a beach house or some other place you use to spend the vacation months? Need some repair done? Need to use a ladder? Well, it is definitely tiresome to transport a conventional long ladder on your car. And it also poses a possible danger to other motorists. What if it breaks lose and there is a car or motorcycle next to you? Of course, you do not want something like that to happen. So it is best to get a telescopic ladder. You will not have problems transporting this ladder in your car: you can just retract it and place it inside your car’s trunk.

Safe to Use

Of course, the safety of the ladder is one of the main concerns of people when it comes to buying ladders. Safety is not an issue with telescopic ladders. Made from sturdy materials, like aluminum, a standard telescopic ladder can support a weight of up to 300 pounds. Also, most ladders have steps that are designed to make climbing or descending on the ladder easier.

A telescopic ladder is certainly a smart solution to your ladder needs. Easy to store, portable, lightweight, and safe to use, your money will absolutely not go to waste with a telescopic ladder.

What is Epoxy Putty?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Epoxy putty is a useful home improvement material that is versatile and can be used for a wide variety of projects. In fact, there are many specialty styles of this putty that are specifically designed for a very particular use. The most common one most people hear about is the one that plumbers use, but that is only the tip o the iceberg.

This material is used to form a tight seal. Starting out with the consistency of resistant play-doh, once cut, molded, and used this stuff will bond an air tight seal on whatever it is being applied to. This is part of the reason it is so popular in filling gaps between say wood frames and insulation.

In addition, plumbers use this stuff quite often when working with awkward pipes or reinforcing a seal in a hard to reach place that they may be worried about. Because this substance is so easy to shape and work with, yet keeps a strict bond, it is very popular among many types of handymen.

There is even specialty epoxy putty for stuff like underwater welding, or other extreme conditions. While this definitely is not the normal use, many individuals will sometimes use this to form bonds around leaky faucets on old pipes, or even patch an actual leaking pipe (although this should never be anything other than a temporary solution).

The point is that among the many different tools and supplies that a good do it yourself person can have, they want to make sure not to overlook epoxy putty, possibly the most versatile of them all.
