A product that is labeled “refurbished” automatically causes us to question it’s performance and safety. We suspect that it has had some major wear and question whether it has been restored to an acceptable level of newness. However, a refurbished product is typically not one that has been restored from a state of wear; it is a product that has been returned to its retailer because of a minor imperfection and, therefore, cannot be sold as new. Electrical tools are a class of products where the word refurbished is used in this sense.

The term minor imperfection can sound like a sneaky appraisal of something that is actually a major problem, but in the case of electrical hand tools, the term typically refers to something such as an imperfect paint job, a wider than normal plastic seam, or a slightly tarnished rubber hand grip, meaning that, in terms of utility, the product is literally as good as new and, for that matter, as safe as new.

Electrical tools begin to show their wear by displaying the following characteristics: wear patterns, looseness, vibration, unusual noises and strange odors, the last four of which could be indicators that the product has become dangerous to use. But there is nothing dangerous about a missing paint chip, which makes refurbished electrical tools, from analogue battery testers to cordless drills an economical purchase.

Among retailers, the term refurbished is synonymous with the term factory-serviced, but it differs sharply from the term reconditioned, which means: To restore to good condition, especially by repairing, renovating, or rebuilding. Across the Internet, numerous discount sites that do not sell reconditioned products offer bargains on refurbished electrical tools. In fact, most refurbished electrical tools still offer a factory warranty, which would not be sensible if the products were of second hand quality.

One popular discount site describes refurbished electrical tools as being devices that customers returned for “any” reason. Even if customers decide that they do not “like” a product, this places it in the realm of refurbishment. After the product is returned, it passes through an examination process where it is checked at least twice for proper working condition before being resold. There is no hard data on the safety of refurbished electrical tools, which almost certainly means that there are not enough complaints about refurbished electrical tools being unsafe to warrant such data.

Everyone knows that when a new car is driven away from the dealership, it immediately loses its sticker price value. If the owner returns less than five minutes later wanting a refund, he or she will receive markedly less than they paid for the car, even though the automobile’s performance and safety quality have not diminished. This is a helpful analogy to remember when considering purchasing a refurbished electrical tool. Compared to refurbished electrical tools, the price that one pays for a “new” electrical tool is not paid for a deliverable quality such as safety, but for the pleasing notion that the product is considered new.

Preventative Measures to Relieve Joint Pain

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Joint pains, osteoarthritis and other related illnesses are common now. Many people suffer from stiffness of the joints which is accompanies sometimes with inflammation and redness. These chronic pain conditions can be collectively called arthritis.

There are different types of arthritis that affects the different joints in the body. It can be a degenerative disease of the cartilage or osteoarthritis, which is the most common. When the cartilage that covers the bones is worn away, it results to rubbing together of your bones. The hands, hips, knee and spine are the commonly affected parts. Another unbearable kind of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. It is an autoimmune disease which means to say that your own body’s immune cells mistakenly attack your joint lining causing it to swell and lead to inflammation and cartilage and bone damage. Gout, on the other hand, is a type of arthritis which is caused by the deposition of mineral crystals in your joints.

As of today, the exact causes of joint pains, especially arthritis, is still unknown. However, there are certain risk factors that can make it easier for you to acquire these illnesses. First of which is age. As you know, as we age our body is also deteriorating thus increasing our risk to various kinds of diseases. It has been found out that females are more frequently affected than males. When you are a heavy person, this means that you also put more pressure on your joints which can lead to painful joints. Your lifestyle and the type of work you do every day can also raise your risk for joint conditions and arthritis.

There are a wide range of treatments for joint pains. Omega-3 from fish oils is said to be a great addition to your diet because it does not only promotes general health but also reduces joint pains. Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements are claimed to make wonders for aching joints. There are different medications that are prescribed such as anti-inflammatories and pain relievers. There are some of these medications that have serious side effects that is why it is not readily recommended.

Painful joints are such a nuisance to your routines and make it harder to function. Therefore, before you develop such conditions, you must prevent the habits that lead to it. You have to maintain your quality of life so you also need to prevent such things from holding you back to doing what you want to do. Anyway, prevention has always been better than cure.

Japanese Pokemon Rare Promo Cards – Which Ones Should I Buy?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As all of you probably know, Pokemon started in Japan. Therefore the oldest and rarest Pokemon cards are from Japan. But, which ones should you buy?

This is a very fascinating and difficult question. The answer really depends upon why you are buying the cards. Are you buying the cards for your personal collection, to sell for profit at sometime in the future, or to use in the Pokemon game.

For those of you who are looking to collect rare Japanese Pokemon cards for your own personal collection, its obviously best to choose which cards you like the best. The Japanese Pokemon promo cards are much nicer than the US ones. They are much more nicely designed, have better detail, and don’t have the cheap looking yellow border like the Wizards of the Coast US Pokemon cards. But, that is my personal opinion and the choice is completely yours. Whatever cards you like I think you should collect.

Those collectors who wish to buy Pokemon cards in hopes of turning a profit later, the answer is simple. Buy the older Japanese Pokemon trophy promo cards. These cards are the ones that will truly hold their value. As with baseball cards, the older the card, usually the more valuable it will become. Although this is not always true, its a good rule to follow. The older, rare Japanese Pokemon promo cards are becoming harder and harder to find and the value is skyrocketing. Take the rarest Pokemon card of all time, the Pikachu Illustrator for example. 8-10 years ago there was one of these for sale for about $6000. Now, you are lucky if you can buy one of these beautiful gems for less than $25,000 (There is one currently on eBay for $32,500). Other rare Japanese Pokemon cards such as the Pikachu trophy card, SSB (Super Secret Battle) Mewtwo, Tropical Mega Battle Exeggutor card have all increased in value. You used to be able to find these cards for about $3000, but now they are close to $7000 each. The price will keep increasing with time, as they are getting harder and harder to find, especially in mint condition. The trophy cards were produced in such limited quantity and they were made before anyone really new about Pokemon cards, so they are extremely difficult to find. The newer Pokemon cards are nice, but they just don’t seem to have the same charm as the older ones. Plus there are many more produced than the classics.

Finally, those of you who wish to use the Pokemon cards for the actual Pokemon game itself, I have very little advice. Due to new rule changes in the Pokemon game, its getting harder and harder to be able to use Japanese Pokemon cards in tournaments. My advice to you is to wait. The way it looks now is that Japanese cards will be banned completely from tournament play sometime in the next couple years. Of course they are still great to collect, as they are much nicer than the US ones, but if you are looking to use them in tournaments, its not a great investment.

Is a Backpack Blower Your Friend or Your Neighbor’s Foe?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Those who own a backpack blower have come to love the power and convenience it offers. As these gas powered engines crank out hundreds of CFM of air flow, they also emit high decibel noise levels. The raw debris clearing power is adored by the owner, but neighbors often scorn the noise levels that interrupt their relaxing day off. The following 7 tips can help to ensure that your neighbor is as fond of your blower as you are.

Tip 1 – Observe reasonable hours of operation. Avoid early morning and evening usable of your blower to limit the chances of interrupting sleep or quiet time. Your neighbor will appreciate this on his or her morning to sleep in.

Tip 2 – Make sure that your leaf or debris problem doesn’t become your neighbor’s problem. Ensure that you do not blow excessive debris onto your neighbor’s yard. When using your blower, blow your debris inward, away from your neighbor’s land.

Tip 3 – Control your dust by dampening leaves or debris before blowing them. Watch your dust and the direction that the wind is blowing. If neighbors in that direction are outdoors, consider delaying your blowing.

Tip 4 – Lower your RPMs to lower your noise. Most backpack blowers have a trigger throttle or a hip throttle. Depressing the throttle only half way will still give ample power at a much reduced noise rate.

Tip 5 – Ensure that you observe all of the recommended safe operating procedures. Be aware of when your neighbors, their children, or their pets are outdoors, and don’t cause any flying debris that could result in injury. You don’t want your nearby resident to view your blower as a danger.

Tip 6 – Talk to your neighbors about your blower and your plans for using it. Determine if there is a time that works best for them for you to do your blowing work. You will often find that this showing of respect is met with appreciation, and they will be more tolerable because of it.

Tip 7 – If you want your neighbor to really be fond of your blower, then do them a favor sometime and blow their leaves or debris into a pile for them. Just imagine how elated your neighbor would be when returning from work to find a leaf-free yard.

Outlook For Coal – Even Greater Use And More Pollution

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Everyone has heard that the use of coal for power generation should be de-emphasized in favor of greener, less -polluting sources. But what is the outlook, according to the New York Times? Even greater use of coal between now and the year 2050.

Why?

Because economic growth in China is, and will continue to be, powered by burning coal. Current trends are for the usage of coal to decrease in Europe by 2050, but more than double in China over the same period of time. In other words, even though there will be a shift to cleaner power generation in the USA and Europe, that shift will be overwhelmed by growth of coal-burning power plants in China.

No one beleives China will avoid coal due to its lower cost compared to other power generation sources. That is why carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) may be the only hope to keep emissions in check. Nobuo Tanaka, executive director of the International Energy Agency, said that when it comes to climate change, the “single most important issue is how to get China to deploy carbon capture and storage into its coal sector.”

Of course, carbon capture and sequestration also adds cost. The USA has poured funding into new technologies that could make CCS more economical, including a recent 575 million in grants. But even the best methods will likely add $30-50 per tons of CO2 emitted, which would add about 30% to current power  generation costs.

And get this: China thinks the rest of the world should underwrite the cost of efforts to get China to reduce its emissions. Will Western countries be willing to do this? I hope not. China is the fastest growing economy on earth and should bear its own responsibilities and costs in this area.

The Way of Pursuing Proper News Translation From English to Chinese

Image : http://www.flickr.com

News as journalism is a genre of publicizing latest events. It informs us of what is going on in the world at large. So if we want to introduce China to the world and let people from other countries know us well, we should adopt a proper way and should pay more attention to the translation of news into English and avoid the appropriateness.

The reconsideration is accepted by so many people. And it is widely used to translate it. Such as the news from “The Guardian, Dec.26 2001″

“Japan’s Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka stressed Tuesday at a press conference in Tokyo that the Japanese government will certainly make great efforts for China’s peaceful reunification.”

And from “The United Press International, April 14 2004″

“Vice President Dick Cheney held talks with China’s President Hu Jintao, his predecessor, Jiang Zenmin, who stepped down from communist party and government posts but retains control over the military, and Premier Wen Jiabao, responsible for the overall operations of the nation’s cabinet…Hu reiterated the Chinese position of adhering to ‘peaceful reunification, and one china, two systems,’ and its commitment to the ‘peaceful solution of the Taiwan issue, but…not…Taiwanese independence”

Both of these approve that our translation has affected the opinions of other country. It plays a very important role.

“According to a spokesman for the Beijing Trade Union, Trade Unions will be organized in all three kinds of ventures.”

The three kinds of ventures include enterprise for Sino-foreign joint venture, enterprise for Sino-foreign co-production and enterprises with sole foreign capital. If we just translate it as enterprises in three forms of ventures, the readers will not know which three forms are they. And this may affect the trade between China and overseas. It is harmful for us economy development. Therefore, we should express it more clearly. “According to a spokesman for the Beijing Trade Union, Trade Unions will be organized in all Sino-foreign joint ventures, co-production, and solely foreign-owned enterprises.”

All above examples have shown some inappropriateness in English news translation. Our Chinese culture is different from most of western countries and we have some exclusive features in journalistic English translation.

Backpack Leaf Blower

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the best tools for the garden or maybe the backyard or front lawn is definitely the backpack leaf blower. It is very easy to use and it is getting less and less expensive by the day.

We have bought ours last year, and you could not imagine how much it eases the labor around the house. Our also has a vacuum function, which is great, but you can get an ordinary one as well. Vacuuming the backyard with the backpack leaf blower (or vacuum if you will) is almost as easy as vacuuming your own room. Our weighs about 20 pounds, but on your back it feels no more than 2 pounds. Nowadays a 20-pounder is considered a heavy one, as far as I am informed. Just the other day I saw a banner advertising a backpack leaf blower, weighing 12 or 13 pounds. Technology really is improving by the minute. Ours is so lightweight and easy to use, even my little sister works with it sometimes, and she is only 13.

We use a battery powered one in our home. It is great, because it is very small, and the full charged battery last just long enough for our 1000 square foot yard. It is also nice that it is a lot quieter than the one with the gas engine. And above all, ours does not pollute the environment.

We used to own a cordless handheld blower and it was pretty good, but it was just impossible to do the whole backyard in one piece. One time I tried to do it, I thought my arms will fall off half way through. The tool itself was not that heavy, but I swear it felt like it was gaining a pound per minute. The backpack blower I just strap on, and off I go.

Should I Do a Cool Down After Exercise?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You are probably thinking what a stupid question. Of course you should do a cool down. We all should. It’s what we have learned since we first started exercising. And it’s important. Isn’t it?

When I played school football (and played very poorly I might add) we always did a cool down. At tennis we did a cool down. After a run. After a bike ride. After a gym workout. Always. It’s because a cool down, um… stops you getting sore after exercise I think. No, it’s um…because you won’t get tight short muscles and they will cool down in a relaxed state or something. No that’s not it, I think it’s because we need to get the lactic acid out isn’t it? Look, we just have to do a cool down that’s all.

You may be very surprised to know that the literature behind doing a cool down after exercise or sports is next to zero! The research on the benefits is pretty much non existent. We have machines in the gym that have ‘cool down phases’ at the end of the exercise. But here’s the thing. The problem, says Hirofumi Tanaka, an exercise physiologist at the University of Texas, Austin, is that there is pretty much no science behind the cool-down advice.

The cool-down, Dr. Tanaka said, “is an understudied topic.”

“Everyone thinks it’s an established fact,” he added, “so they don’t study it.”

However, most people are not even clear on what a cool down should be. Is it stretching? Or doing the same exercise but more slowly? Or is it a walk from the gym to get into your car?

There is only one particular fact that exercise researchers agree on in regards to the benefits of a cool down. If you exercise really intensely, the blood vessels in your legs expand to send more blood to your legs and feet and your heart is beating very fast. If you stop all of a sudden, your heart slows down and your blood is pooled in your legs and feet. This can cause you to feel dizzy or even pass out.

The elite athletes are at most risk says Dr Paul Thompson, a cardiologist at the Hartford hospital in Connecticut.

“If you are well trained, your heart rate is slow already, and it slows down even faster with exercise,” he said. “Also, there are bigger veins with a large capacity to pool blood in your legs.”

According to Carl Foster, an exercise physiologist at the University of Wisconsin,

This effect can also be problematic for someone with coronary disease, because blood vessels leading to the heart are already constricted which makes it difficult for blood to get in. “That’s always a concern,” Dr. Foster said. “But to my knowledge there is not a wealth of experimental data.”

Ok, well that’s for your highly trained elite athletes. But what about your average Joe who pays some sports, a bit of tennis maybe, goes to the gym and does his workout.

“Probably not a great deal,” Dr. Thompson said. And moreover, people don’t just exercise and then stand in the one spot. They walk around to get to the locker room, or to get to their cars or even to the next machine. This is a cool down in a sense.

The whole idea of a cool down originated from the thought that if you didn’t do it, lactic acid would stay in your muscles and leave you sore afterward. We now know that to be completely wrong. In fact it is actually good to have lactic acid in your muscles because it’s a fuel. There was a study of cyclists done where the conclusion was made that it was better not to cool down because the lactic acid was changed back into glycogen, a fuel for the muscles, when they just stopped however, when they cooled down it was wasted. It was used up to fuel their muscles.

The muscle soreness theory also has no justification either. There is no physiological basis for it. There was a South African study done where they had 52 people walk backwards downhill on a walking machine for 20 minutes to induce muscle soreness. Half the group did cool downs and the others didn’t. There was no difference in the muscle soreness between the two groups.

And muscle tightness? There is also absolutely no evidence that this reduces muscle tightness.

“In a different generation we would have called it an old wives’ tale,” Dr. Foster said. “Now I guess I’d call it an old physiologists’ tale. There are no data to support the idea that a cool-down helps.” But, he added, once again, “It’s an idea we can’t get rid of.”

As far as Dr Thompson is concerned, if he does a really intense track workout he will do a small jog just to avoid the possibility of getting dizzy afterward. As far as Dr Tanaka is concerned, when he plays his weekly soccer match he doesn’t bother to cool down at all. According to Dr Tanaka, he sees no point in doing anything after his game other than just to stop.

Why Online Business – The Harsh Reminder Why Online Business Is For You

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Many people want to achieve financial freedom and they know very well that running their own business has always and will always be the best road to financial freedom. Here are some reasons to remind these people why online business is the best way toward financial freedom.

1. Online Business provides a HUGE market.

Internet is not just expanding, it’s BOOMING. In 2001, there are more than 500 millions people using the internet.

By 2006, more than 1.1 billion people will start using internet. Doing business with such a huge market sounds good doesn’t it?

If you are able to create an effective online business that is able to reach out to the global customers, the potential of profit earning is really high.

Having your own online business does not necessarily mean huge capital.

I know a couple of people who earn thousands of dollars selling things off E-bay, which by the way costs less than $20 to open up a store.

Another suggestion is to join an online network marketing company. Robert Kiyosaki, the author of bestseller “Rich Dad Poor Dad” suggests that network marketing is a cheap way to start doing business.

I will talk more about starting your own online business in my other articles.

2. Some online Business creates passive income.

This is the key to financial freedom. By building up your passive income, you are on your way to financial freedom. The word passive is defined as: “receiving or subjected to an action without responding or initiating an action in return”. The word passive income is to have an income in which you don’t have to put much action in return.

Many people refused to believe this concept of being able to earn money without doing anything.

It is true that you won’t be able to earn anything if you do not do ANYTHING!

Let’s view it this way, if Bill Gates were to stop working for a day, will he still earn money from people purchasing his already well established “Windows” product?

He does! And that earning is what we call passive income.

This earning is possible for everyone as long as you know how to do it right.

Again, online network marketing is providing you with the system of earning passive income.

3. You will never get rich working for someone else.

A handful of people are fine working for a steady paycheck. But if you are reading this, most likely you are not those people.

This has been said many times but it bears repeating – You will never get rich working for someone else! Income you generate as a cog in some giant machine is an income that you earn by trading your energy and time. Passive income doesn’t work that way!

Passive income can be generated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

The only person that will be rich at the expense of your energy and your time is your boss!

4. Work at your leisure.

Creating passive income online provides you with free time to be used to enjoy quality time with your family and friends.

By working for others, despite how hard you work, your income will remain the same: your salary!

Having your own online business, you will earn more with more effort you put in.

That sounds more like a fairer deal doesn’t it?

Online business can be done by everyone at any age. If you are reading this, consider yourself lucky. You can take the step now toward your financial freedom!

Working together with you toward financial freedom,
