Snoring – Types and Causes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are two types of snoring: primary snoring and snoring indicative of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If your significant other is a snorer, you can conduct a sleep study, which is called a polysomnogram, to determine which type of snoring your significant other is suffering from. Of the two types of snoring, primary snoring, which is also called simple snoring, is the one that you should be concerned about the least. A person will not suffer from any health problems or lose out on any sleep because of primary snoring. You can tell a person is suffering from primary snoring if you can hear loud breathing while that person is sleeping. Primary snoring is uninterrupted and periodic. The noise from the loud breathing can be of any decibel level. Primary snoring results from some type of nasal passage blockage. The other type of snoring is more of a health concern and a doctor should be consulted for treatment recommendations. OSA can occasionally cause a complete blockage of the air passages for as long as 10 seconds and this may result in death due to suffocation. According to the National Institutes of Health, 12 million Americans have OSA and it is as common as diabetes. OSA sufferers can have as many as 20 to 30 involuntary breathing pauses per hour during sleep. These pauses occur because the throat muscles and tongue relax and block the opening of the airway. A person suffering from this type of snoring will have early morning headaches, problems staying awake during the day and low oxygen levels in the blood. If OSA is left untreated, a person can have high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiac arrest, stroke and heart disease. Unfortunately, 90% of OSA sufferers are undiagnosed and untreated.

Snoring occurs because of the vibrations of tissues against each other in the back of the mouth and nose. These tissues obstruct the airway and consist of the soft palate, the throat, the uvula, the tonsils, or the adenoids. Snoring occurs during sleep because deep sleep is what causes the relaxation of the throat muscles. This partially closes the airway. This narrowing of the airway obstructs the air flow, which causes the snoring. A narrower airway will cause louder noise because there will be more friction. There are several other causes of snoring. If you’re not in shape, this can lead to poor muscle tone and lax muscles, which can contribute to snoring. Alcohol, sleeping pills, or antihistamines can increase the relaxation of throat and tongue muscles. Excessive fatty tissue in the neck can cause your throat to become smaller. A long soft palate or uvula can narrow the opening of the airway. A stuffy nose from a cold can block your nasal airways and make it harder to pull air through it. This will create a vacuum in your throat and pull together the tissues of the throat. Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke can cause the throat muscles to relax and also creates nasal and lung congestion. Men are more likely to snore than women because they have narrower airways. When you’re middle-aged or older, your throat become narrower and the muscle tone in your throat decreases. A deviated septum, which is a deformity of the wall that separates one nostril from the other, can cause obstructed breathing.

How Long Do You Cook Hamburgers on a Grill?

Introduction

It is a true American favorite treat to cook hamburgers on the grill on holidays, special occasions, or just whenever you have a hankering. But if you are inexperienced at grilling hamburgers, then you may be wondering:

o How long do you cook hamburgers on a grill?

o What temperature should you grill them?

o What should you season them with?

In this article you will learn the answer to these questions. Plus you will learn a variety of useful hamburger grilling tips.

Grilling Times & Temperature

The following table is a general guide and should not replace checking inner temperatures of the grilled hamburgers with a meat thermometer:

Patty Thickness: 1/2″;

Grilling Time: 9 min;

Grill Temperature: Low (Lid & Vent Closed)

Patty Thickness: 3/4″;

Grilling Time: 13 min;

Grill Temperature: Low (Lid & Vent Closed)

Patty Thickness: 1″;

Grilling Time: 18 min;

Grill Temperature: Low (Lid & Vent Closed)

Seasoning the Hamburgers

Some of the mix-ins frequently used by cooks across America include:

o Onion Soup Mix

o Butter & Minced Garlic

o Minced Onions & Garlic

o Cheddar Cheese & Chopped Bacon

o Equal Amount Of Pork Sausage

o Barbeque Sauce & Bacon

o Cheese & Jalapenos

o Diced Onions & Shredded Cheese

o Lemon Juice, Chopped Basil, Chives, Rosemary, & Thyme

o Teriyaki & Pineapple

Often mix-ins are left out and seasonings are liberally sprinkled on each side:

o Salt & Pepper

o Seasoned Salt & Lemon Pepper

o Cajun Seasoning

o Barbeque Seasoning

o Various Grill Seasonings (found in the seasoning isle in grocery stores)

Grilling Tips

o For best flavor, use freshly ground chuck (about 20% fat) or freshly ground round (about 11% fat).

o When making lean hamburgers (such as when using fresh ground round) mix in one egg for each pound of meat in order to prevent crumbling.

o The leaner the hamburger patties, the drier the hamburgers will be, and the more likely they will crumble while grilling.

o When forming the hamburger patties, be sure to press the middle thin or make a thumb-sized hole to keep uniform thickness while cooking.

o Make hamburger patties about 1/2″ larger around than the hamburger buns you will be using as the hamburger patties will shrink.

o You may shape the hamburger patties by either using your hands or using a hamburger patty mold press.

o Pre-heat the grill on high temperature. After pre-heating the grill, clean and oil the grates.

o Brushing a little canola oil on the hamburger patty as well as on the grill will help keep the hamburger from sticking to the grill.

o Closing the lid and vents while cooking will reduce moisture-robbing flair-ups.

o Another way to avoid flair-ups is to place the hamburger patties in an aluminum pie tin. Place the hamburger patties so they do not overlap each other. Still turn the hamburger patties over about half way through cooking. Cook directly on the grill after they are 90% done.

o Turning the hamburger patties one quarter of a turn clockwise or counter-clockwise will create crisscross grill marks.

o Do not press the burgers on the grill as this will cause moisture to escape the burger.

o Flip the burger over only once, half way through cooking time, in order to preserve moisture.

o Never cut a hamburger on the grill so that the moisture stays inside the meat.

o When the juices start coming out of the top of the burger, then it is about medium.

o When the juices pool clear (not red) on top of the burger, then it is about medium-well.

o Use an instant read meat thermometer to determine if the hamburgers are done. 160 degrees Fahrenheit is medium. 170 degrees Fahrenheit is well done.

o Never place cooked meat back onto the same plate as was used for raw meat.

o Brush melted butter onto the hamburger buns and briefly toast them on the grill.

Summery

When you have a hankering for a hot, juicy hamburger, nothing beats a freshly grilled and tasty burger. Now you know the answers to: How long do you cook hamburgers on a grill? How hot should you set the grill to cook the hamburgers? What are some ways you can season the hamburgers? Enjoy!

Tips For Calculating Mileage Between Destinations

A map and a ruler will just take too long, if you’re trying to figure out how far apart two locations are. There are many websites that will assist you in computing the mileage of your next journey. The following are some different methods of figuring out the total mileage from point A to point B.

Step 1:

Try MapQuest. Widely considered one of the best mapping sites on the web, mapquest offers a simple tool that lets you figure out your mileage total from one point to another. Go to “Get Directions” and enter your beginning location, as well as your zip code. Next, enter the address of your intended destination into the ‘To Where’ box and click “Get Directions”. The directions from one destination to another will pop up in a few seconds. But right at the top is what you’ll need to know. As well as the total length of the trip following the directions they gave you, MapQuest will provide you with an estimated time to travel from the starting destination to the last destination. Your trip’s length will be decided by how many miles it is from one place to another.

Step 2:

Also try MapMyRun. An alternative website for finding out the distance you have traveled is [http://www.mapmyrun]. A common runner’s tool, MapMyRun allows you to draw out your path on a map, which it will then take and tell you the total distance of your run. That you aren’t restricted to road travel is the benefit of using this site. The website is able to compute between any two points.

Step 3:

Use a mileage calculating tool. You won’t be let down by the broad range of web-based services that Google provides at your fingertips. When you use Google maps to plan your vacation route, it is possible to load these details onto a web-based mileage calculator found at mileagecalc. You will be asked to input your starting destination. Click on “Continue” to see all of the available events or trips you have had. You can view the distance from one destination to another by using the ‘Get Mileage’ option.

Step 4:

Rand McNally has a great website for this purpose. Without Rand McNally’s maps, we might otherwise get lost. In addition, they offer terrific web-based tools that furnish vacationers with maps and directions as well as a mileage calculator. Click on http://www.randmcnally.com/rmc/directions/dirGetMileageInput.jsp and enter your starting location and your ending location. If you want to calculate the distance from one point to another, click on ‘Get Mileage’.

You can look online lots of different mileage calculators. It is easy to get an estimated figure on your travel mileage by just having the zip code and address of both your starting point and your destination.

An Easy Pork Chop Recipe, Southern Style Smothered Pork Chops

This easy pork chop recipe is a southern favorite. The pork chops are covered in thinly sliced onions and gravy, and simmered to a flavorful finish.

Choose a thicker sliced pork chop that is an even thickness throughout. Chops that are an even thickness will cook evenly with less drying.

Start the chop at a high heat to brown quickly, then finish at lower heat on the stove in the gravy. This produces a more tender and juicy chop.

Watch your heat and do not overcook. Overcooking will cause the chops to dry out. Serve this with a nice bread or biscuit to soak up the extra gravy or over rice. Excellent!

Easy Smothered Pork Chops

1 Tablespoon Oil

2 Tablespoons Butter

2 Tablespoons flour

2 cups broth, beef, chicken or a combination of the two

4 bone in pork chops, 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick

2 medium yellow onions, sliced thin

2 garlic cloves, minced (2 teaspoons)

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaved, minced

2 bay leaves

1 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced

2 tablespoons water

salt and black pepper

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over high heat. Season the pork chops with pepper.
  2. Brown the pork chops in the oil, turn and brown the second size. When brown, transfer to a platter and set aside.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter and onions and a little salt. Cook for about 5 minutes until the onions are softened and browned.
  4. Add the flour and cook, stirring until the flour is lightly browned.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic and thyme and cook for a few seconds until fragrant.
  6. Increase the heat to medium high. Add the broth slowly, whisking until well mixed. Add the bay leaves. Bring to a boil. Scrape the bottom of the skillet to loosen any brown bits on the bottom of the pan.
  7. Return the chops to the skillet and cover them with the onion gravy.
  8. Reduce the heat again to low and simmer until the pork is tender and done, about 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the chops to a platter and cover with foil to keep warm. Increase the heat to medium high and cook the gravy rapidly until the sauce is reduced to a gravy thickness. Remove the bay leaves. Add the parsley. Adjust seasonings if needed with salt and pepper.
  10. Pour the gravy over the chops and serve.

I hope you enjoy this traditional southern favorite easy pork chop recipe.

Norway Fjords, Mountains & Wildness – Exploring Norway’s Natural Beauty

Norway is named the best country to stay in the world by United Nations. Besides being a great place to live, it is also a popular tourist destination for those who want a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. The famous tourist attractions are the museums, cultural heritage, monuments, fjords, mountains, and wildness.

One great way to tour Norway fjords is to join a cruise and explore the farms and villages in the fjord areas. Some villages can only be reached by ship during winter. You will definitely be amazed by the natural beauty and tranquility of the surrounding during your visit.

You can also enjoy the spectacular view of Norway’s wildness by traveling on two of the world’s most popular rails, the Flam Railway and Bergen Railway. The Bergen train is the main line commuting Osla with Bergen and travels across the Hardangervidda highland plateau and National Park. The Flam Railway is a side line of the main Bergen Railway, and it is one of the steepest railway lines in the world. Its highest attitude is at 1,222 meters above sea level.

While cruising in these areas, you will see the amazing Norway fjords, waterfalls cascading down from the rocky hillsides and snow-topped mountains. At the foot of the mountains is the beautiful Flam Valley. From the valley, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the waterfalls, rivers and snow-clad mountain peaks from a different viewing angle.

The most popular Norway fjords are the Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord, and both are listed in the Unesco’s World Heritage Site. The Naeroyfjord, a spur of the large fjord of Sognefjord, is about 17 kilometers, and it is attributed as the most beautiful fjord in the world.

The famous Norway In A Nutshell tour will provide you a complete experience with train ride, fjord cruise and road journey going up the hill so that you can explore Norway in a limited time. There are plenty of tour packages offering from one day to a week itinerary to suit your traveling schedule, and you can start your Norwegian journey either from Bergen or Osla.

For more traveling tips and information, I would recommend checking out the Norway fjords.

The Recipes of Liberia

Liberia, with its capital Monrovia on the Atlantic is a beautiful country on the outskirts of West Africa’s central rainforest belt. However, the country is one of the world’s poorest and is just emerging from a devastating civil war at the turn of the millennium. The economy and infrastructure are still wrecked and the fall-out of the civil war is still being dealt with.

The country was first settled by freed African slaves from America in the 19th century (the name means ‘Land of the Free’) and it was one of the few African countries not to come under colonial rule.

As a result of this heritage Liberian cuisine is a melange of influences. Liberia is one of the few African countries with a native tradition of baking and this is juxtaposed with native traditions of creating palm-oil-based stews with forest greens. Being tropical the country has a high rainfall and rice is successfully grown there. Drinks such as ginger beer are also common and made locally.

The recipes below will give you a brief taste of what Liberia has to offer:

Liberian Cake

Ingredients:

150g butter(

180g caster sugar

4 eggs(

240g plain flour(

3/4 tsp baking soda(

1/2 tsp cinnamon(

1/2 tsp ground allspice(

1/4 tsp ground mace(

1/2 tsp baling powder(

1/8 tsp cloves(

200ml golden syrup(

150ml milk(

60g lemon zest, finely grated(

90g seedless raisins, chopped

(60g shredded coconut

Method:

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and beat into the butter mixture. Sift all the dry ingredients together, mix in the grated lemon zest and fold into the egg mixture, adding alternately with the syrup and milk. Stir until the mixture is smooth then fold-in the frut and coconut. Divide the batter equally between two 22cm springform cake tins. Bake in an oven pre-heated to 170°C for about 40 minutes, or until the cakes are completely set.

Greens with Green Pepper

Ingredients:

1 onion, finely chopped(

1 garlic clove, finely chopped(

4 hot chilli peppers, pounded to a paste(

2 green bell peppers, de-seeded and chopped
(

2 ripe tomatoes, chopped(

900g greens (eg spinach, cassava leaves, kale, collard greens, turnip greens etc) de-stemmed and parboiled(

salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper to taste(

120ml peanut butter

Method:

For the native Liberian version pound a handful of the onion, garlic, chillies and tomatoes together in a pestle and mortar to form a paste (you can omit the chillies if desired).

Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add your remaining chopped onion for a few minutes before adding he tomato and chilli paste. Fry for a few minutes then add he greens and 60ml water. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cover. Add the peanut butter and stir in, season and then reduce the heat as much as possible. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce is smooth and serve with FuFu.

I hope that these recipes have given you a little taste of the foods of Liberia and that you are now prepared to find more.

Robyn Lee is an author for the Celtnet African Recipes site and you can find many more Liberian Recipes in at the West African Recipes site.
