War of the Worlds: Now here’s a plot so full of holes it makes the earth’s moon look like a croquet ball. Speaking of outer space, WOTWs is an alien summer fright feast courtesy of Steven Spielberg, who has pointed his camera at the heavens a few times before. Instead of the wild West, where he set Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the auteur has also returned to the East Coast, sight of yet another of his summer hits, Jaws. As you only wouldn’t know if you’d been sleeping under a rock star’s stash of Valium, Tom Cruise stars in WOTWs as a 3D dad: divorced, detached, despicable. As most other reviewers have failed to note, WOTWs owes a tremendous debt of tribute to “Signs.” The parallels are obvious and, considering that M. Night Shyamalan’s summer alien flick rocked theaters just three summers ago, staggering. Consider these things: In Signs, Mel Gibson is a widower, father of two kids. True, he has a younger brother in Joaquin Phoenix, but mini-actor Tom Cruise has a chip on his shoulder at least as big as Phoenix (the city).M. Night also chose to focus his film on a Northeastern family.Mel Gibson, a holy roller’s holy roller in “real life,” played a man of the cloth having doubts. Tom Cruise is a proud – fightin’ proud – Scientologist! Basements figure heavily into both movie sets. Apparently, aliens are smart at getting to earth, and invading, but all systems are no-go when it comes to the mental acuity required to negotiate cellars, the underground equivalent of a garage, the flip-side of the attic. And in both movies (incoming spoiler) the aliens are not quite cogent enough to figure out that such basic matters to life as water and germs are here in abundance. How they evolved on disease-free planets with nothing to drink, presumably, is a matter for the philosophers. Or maybe it’s a matter for a sci-fi sequel in the spirit of “Alien vs. Predator”: “Shyamalan vs. Spielberg: War of the Nerds.” “Steve, Steve, Steve. You don’t even – you’re glib, Steve.” “Oh yeah? What’s your next movie to be filmed exclusively in Pennsylvania? ‘Return of the Amish’? ‘The English Always Ring Twice’?” Sigh. One can dream: Steven Spielberg has given us license to do that, if nothing else. In fact, as I dozed through the loooooooooooooooong basement sequence of WOTWs, I did just that, dreaming peacefully of less boring alien invasions, until I was awakened by Cruise killing Tim Robbins. It was a mercy killing, considering the recent state of Robbins’ film career. Until Spielberg and Shyamalan settle the feud I’m trying to spark, this reviewer urges you to hold on to your $8 and rent, for just a couple of bucks, the only WOTWs that matters, the 1952 version, which won an Oscar for its once-state-of-the-art special effects, a surprise since the rays the Martian machines squirt look a lot like what would happen if an arc-welder tried to light his own flatulence using the tools of his trade. Interestingly, as a friend of mine notes, the novel and subsequent movies are framed in socially telling ways, giving us a clue to their various eras. In the H.G. Wells original, the narrator is a know-it-all philosopher type to rival any Jules Verne egghead. In the ’50s flick, the protagonist is a manly scientist with a female sidekick – educated, slightly liberated, but easily a decade and a half away from burning her frilly underthings. And in WOTWs 2005, there’s every-moron Tom Cruise, who treads the image waters as a dysfunctional family man with Peter Pan Syndrome and a winning smile – when he’s not calling his only teen son a “dick” during a game of catch, or telling mechanics how to do their job, or singing decades-old songs to his daughter orplanting grenades down (or is it up) a marauding alien invader’s esophagus. Stop. You had me at “dick,” Tom. You had me at dick. Speaking of Dick, if you want to see what Cruise and Spielberg can do with less-dated, less-challenging, more-cerebral material, rent Minority Report, a vastly superior sci-fi flick based on the work of Philip K. Dick. Actually, I’d rather watch just about anything, even a Jerry Maguire marathon, than sit through “War of the Worlds” again, although I did rather like seeing Tom Cruise flee for his life. As long as I was in the theater, I could totally relate to the feeling.

One of the most powerful Pocket PCs, manufactured in 2005, Dell Axim x51v still has the hardware to compete in today’s PDA market. XScale 624MHz processor paired with 16MB dedicated 2700G graphics adapter from Intel can handle many tasks with ease. Axim x51v replaced x50v that did not have the persistent memory. This guide will give some insight into x51v usage possibilities. You can get a used Dell Axim x51v on eBay for around $100 and up. For your money you will get: SD and CF slots, Bluetooth, wireless B draft, 3.7″ VGA touch screen with ability to drive an external monitor, etc.
1. Multimedia. Install the free TCPMP player on your Axim and you will be able to play most music file formats; from mp3 to FLAC and APE, Axim beats iPod with Rockbox. TCPMP will also play a wide variety of video files utilizing hardware acceleration of Intel 2700G graphics adapter in your Axim. I have smoothly played Divx, Xvid movies compressed for PC without converting them especially for Pocket PC.
2. GPS Navigation. You can buy a GPS receiver that plugs into Axim’s Compact Flash card slot or using Bluetooth. Pair the receiver with TomTom navigation software for Windows Mobile Pocket PC and you have a fully functioning GPS device.
3. Web Browsing. Install Opera Mobile browser on x51v. The experience will come close to browsing in Safari on iPhone. Flash playback is available in this browser but it is not watchable due to the hardware specifics of x51v.
4. 3D games. There are numerous games available for 3D accelerated Axim x51v. New Axim came with Toy Golf and a GeoRally games. Today some of my favourites are: Enigmo (also available for iPhone) and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
5. External monitor. You can buy a cable on eBay for your Axim that will drive the external monitor. Resolutions will be poor by today’s standard, but they do the job. I was able to achieve a resolution of 640×480 pixels. It is best to buy a cable that will allow you to charge x51v while external monitor is connected.
6. Google Maps. Google Maps with street view says it all. 7.Language learning software. Practice Chinese characters on your screen. There is plenty of software out there. Popular Pocket PC learning programs are available from Declan Software and LigvoSoft.

Samsung has upgraded from success to success. Yes, Samsung has been having a good recorded of phones and the Samsung Blast is an addition to their record. The Samsung Blast has as QWERTY keyboard, a 1.3 mega pixels camera an of course the beloved Bluetooth option. Samsung Blast is the new edition to the T-Mobile factory. If you need a new phone this phone should be a good test drive.
We all know about the Bluetooth option, but why is it so different with this phone? Do you know the Bluetooth ringer? Most phone have the default ringer when the Bluetooth is on but with the blast the ringer you choose for that person or that group that will ring regardless if Bluetooth is on or off. Any Bluetooth may be used, so get your Bluetooth hooked up to this phone and enjoy.
The QWERTY keyboard phones are becoming the most popular phones up to date. So if you have a QWERTY keyboard you should know something about the Samsung Blast a little bit. The format is blackberry pearl with a slider experience. Slide the phone up and get the keyboard, keep it down and get the basic call function. It’s an optional phone, text to make your life a whole lot easier of just slide it up to make you look cool.
My experience with the phone is just amazing. I had it since the first week it came out and yet to have a complaint about this phone. I’m actually the envy of everyone that has a razor phone. Razors are cool but their nothing compare to the new Samsung Blast. I just can’t wait to see tons of accessories for this phone; I’m ready to customize this phone. I love my Samsung Blast and I’m sure if you tried it out you’ll love it too.
Samsung you hit this one out of the park. You receive an A+ from me, personally. T-Mobile signature phones are the sidekicks but with the Samsung Blast that just might have to change. The blast is fun for any true texter out there. Text really fast, get email sent to your phone without an extra service on your phone (it counts as text messaging), have tons of ringer for every single person in your phonebook. With the Samsung Blast the sky the limit. Samsung keep up the good work and ant wait to see your next project.

Britain has been responsible for some of the finest human beings ever to grace the Earth. We have also been responsible for Simon Cowell but no country is perfect. Never the less we know a few things about achieving our goals. As a Britain (and a qualified Life Coach) I thought I would do my last good deed of 2009 and share that knowledge with the world.
Now us Brits have a worldwide reputation for being friendly and approachable individuals. To be fair that’s utter nonsense but none the less whilst reading this article please believe that you are amongst friends. So be honest, how many of your resolutions make it past the first week every year? How many of us are on the phone to the pizza place and lightning a cigarette before the gym card even has chance to gather dust?
With my 5 top tips to keeping your resolutions you are almost guaranteed to make it into your second week or even further… So read on and start the process towards the New You (or at least the New You that’s slightly lighter, fitter, or less likely to need a sit down after walking up the stairs!)
Tip 1: Be an emotional banker!
When you are trying to succeed at any goal you are going to need willpower. Sometimes lots of it. Some people are blessed with it whilst other struggle to find this mystical substance. The good news is that you can generate it.
Think of your will power as a bank account that is stored in your mind (bear with me on this one). When you sit down and set your goals for the year you also need to set down your reasons to succeed. Once you have these reasons, build a picture in your mind of you achieving this goal and all the good things that will come from it. To build this clear picture you will need to think about all the positive emotions, images, and changes to your life that can happen as a result of you hitting this goal. The key is to repeatedly think about these images until you can draw on them mentally in an instant. You will know if it is working because thinking about these things will make you feel happier or your heart rate will increase or you will feel a surge of determination to make these things real. Congratulations this is your emotional bank account.
When ever you feel weak and temptation is calling go into your emotional bank account and draw upon the mental deposits you have made for that goal and remember why you are doing it and why you should resist your urges. You will find that the vivid images you have drawn will help you keep moving in the right direction.
But do remember like all bank accounts this one needs regular deposits so refresh those images in your mind a couple of times a week to make sure you have plenty to draw on.
Tip 2: Write here, Write now.
This one is painfully simple. Write it down. Write your goals down clearly and display it where you will see it every day. There are several reasons for doing this. Writing goals down makes them real. It’s like a contract that you have made with yourself. Seeing them everyday gives you a reminder of what you want to achieve This allows you a moment to draw on that emotional bank account which will then give you the willpower reserves to fight the days challenges and temptations.
There is also a strange element to writing goals down that no one really knows how to explain. Even me and I am British! The simple fact is that writing goals down makes them more likely to happen! Some people say that this is the Universe or God (of which ever religion you have chosen) or Karma or Fate recognising your wishes and helping you to succeed. How many times have you thought of a friend and they have telephoned or you have seen them on the street within days sometimes even hours? Can this always be a coincidence?
My solution is a bit more down to earth. By writing down your goals and letting your mind absorb the information you are training it to observe the world for opportunities to achieve that goal. For instance, if a friend in conversation observed how many white cars there are on the road today you would start to notice more white cars on the road because your brain has been fed the suggestion and will start to filter that information (that it would normally ignore) and give it to you.
Every day we get bombarded with advertising messages and other information across lots of different mediums. How many do we actually process or remember? Our brains can’t cope with this onslaught of information so it only filters in what it needs. For example, if you are looking for a loan or credit card you become more aware of advertising messages for loan companies. Normally you would block such messages out but now its needed the brain allows the content in and you become aware of the useful information.
By writing your goals down your brain will begin to filter information received from the world that could be useful to help you achieve what you have set out to do. So you will find that the world will be full of useful information, sudden ideas and chance happenings and meetings that can contribute to you succeeding.
Tip 3: Get SMART
All goals should be SMART. For those not familiar with that particular piece of business jargon it stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Bound.
Great goals are Specific, Measurable, and Time Bound.
I will lose ten kilos by April 2010 is better than I will lose weight this year. The latter is unspecific and unfocused. How much weight? Does losing one kilo count as achieving that goal? Is that all you want you to do?
Twelve months is a very long time and can stretch out forever leading to ‘I will start again in March or April or May etc’. I will lose X by Y is great because it sets a manageable target and means when you lose some weight you can feel yourself getting closer to a specific target not just some aimless half goal. Specific targets are achievable and give a sense of purpose alongside a feeling of satisfaction when you get there.
Another example is when your goal is to quit smoking. Try the following rather than the generic ‘I will quit smoking’.
I will reduce my smoking habit from 20 a day to 10 a day by Feb 2010
I will reduce my smoking habit to five a day by April 2010
I will quit all together by June 2010.
This prevents the Cold Turkey effect, sets specific, measurable, and time bound goals and has little successes on the road to the main goal.
Great Goals are also Achievable and Realistic.
We all have the big goal. It may be to win a reality show singing contest, writing a novel, or making a million. As a Life Coach I would never discourage this but what is needed is to be realistic. Is that really going to happen next year? What we need is stepping stones. What goals can you achieve this year to bring you closer to the big goal?
For example
Write a novel can become:
Write a fantastic first chapter of a book
Attend a creative writing class
Write five short stories and send them to a publisher
Be a millionaire can become:
Write a business plan
Write a thesis for my ‘big business idea’
Attend an entrepreneur’s class or read some autobiographies
Tip 4: Put the pressure on!
Another simple tip. Fear can be a great motivator so use it to your advantage. How many times have you feared failing a test or cocking up a business presentation so worked through the night to cram or meet the deadline? With some goals you can set similar deadlines. Want to lose weight? Book a beach holiday in the sun. Want to decorate your house? Book a house party and invite all your friends. Want to quit smoking? Well do it or you will eventually die! All goals can have deadlines that you have to hit or face humiliation. Sometimes cranking up the pressure on yourself helps you get the job done….
Tip 5: You are only going to bloody succeed if you actually want to.
Do you really want to quit smoking? Do you really want to write that novel? Have a long hard think about whether you are doing this because you think you should do or ‘because its time’ or because it would be a good idea. Unless you really really want to this then think hard whether this goal is making your list.
You should have at least 3 strong reasons for doing it and be able to draw on these at times of weakness from your emotional bank account. If your struggling to really picture succeeding or more importantly struggling to get excited by succeeding then perhaps its time for a chance of focus. A month spent deciding on your true goals is infinitely more useful then failing on goals that your not committed to in the first place.
I hope you have enjoyed my New Year Resolutions tips. Please remember it is only a date and there are another 364 through out the year so if you do slip then get back in the saddle the next day make a withdrawal from your emotional bank account and march on!
