Many companies these days are getting on the Green bandwagon. If a company is marketing their products or services as being environmentally friendly, they sometimes scramble to find office supplies that back up their message. Turning to the big box office supply companies doesn’t always give you the best selection of recycled office products. Most companies find what they are looking for at smaller “Mom & Pop” type office supply stores; which are few and far between these days. These smaller stores know that they have to provide better competitive advantage to their larger competitor that will beat them almost every time on price. Some of these small office supply stores have turned to environmentally friendly office supplies to maintain that edge.

There are some great recycled papers that have a higher post consumer recycled content than what the bigger companies are carrying. Living Tree Paper out of Eugene, Oregon has some great papers that are 90% recycled and 10% Hemp/Flax. We are starting to see pencils made of recycled paper. One of the biggest problems has been with vinyl. Vinyl or PVC is a petroleum based product that is toxic to manufacture and dispose. When your binder’s rings bend or your cover rips, it’s off to the landfill where it will be thousands of years before that material can break down. Manufacturers really need to think through the impact their materials have on the environment. There are many materials like corrugated cardboard, non toxic chip board, recycled bending chip and even bioplastics that would make excellent materials for office supplies and recycled binders.

Office supply stores that carry these types of products will give them the competitive edge over their competition, as well as, give them the satisfaction that they are doing their part for the environment.

Handbook of Transcription Factor NF-kappaB

Handbook of Transcription Factor NF-kappaB : Recent evidence proving the molecular link between unchecked, chronic inflammation and cancer has implicated the transcription factor NF-kB as a key factor in both inhibiting apoptosis and promoting cell proliferation. Since its initial identification 20 years ago as a simple regulating factor in one small part of the immune response, NF-kB is proving to be the most protean of all transcription factors. It has been shown to function in most cell types as a key regulator of a number of inducible genes. Research on the responsibilities and resulting pathologies of NF-kB has been prolific, but until now there has been no consolidated, multidisciplinary reference.
Providing contributions from leading authorities involved with seminal discoveries on the subject, Handbook of Transcription Factor NF-kappaB is an entry point to understanding the broad role of this widely studied factor. Beginning with a summary, the authors introduce the uninitiated reader to the complexities of the NF-kB system. They explain how a multitude of extracellular and intercellular signals integrated at the level of this transcription factor have led to fundamental insights about many aspects of gene regulation and signal transduction.
The chapters delve into specific research aspects concerning the function and regulation of NF-kB in a number of biological systems. They discuss inflammation, innate and adaptive immunity, liver integrity, and nervous system development, as well as the formation of hair, skin, teeth, and many other aspects of the developing vertebrate body. The pathological effects of excess NF-kB activity are addressed in chapters on diseases related to chronic inflammation, such as heart disease, muscular dystrophy, cancer, and tumor proliferation, as well as diseases caused by inherent deficiencies in NF-kB. The text culminates in a discussion of current efforts to develop therapies aimed at inhibiting the aberrant activity of NF-kB in different diseases.

The Apocrypha

The Apocrypha : The Apocrypha consists of the books that are found in the Greek version of the Jewish Bible–the Septuagint, the earliest complete version of the Bible we possess–but that were not included in the final, canonical version of the Hebrew Bible. For this reason, they were called “Apocrypha,” the hidden or secret books, and while they formed part of the original King James version of 1611, they are no longer included in modern Bibles. Yet they include such important works as The First Book of Maccabees, the Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, and the stories of Susanna, Tobit, and Judith, and other works of great importance for the history of the Jews in the period between the rebuilding of the Temple and the time of Jesus, and thus for the background of the New Testament. These works have also had a remarkable impact on writers and artists. Beyond this, they are often as powerful as anything in the canonical Bible.

The translation into contemporary English is by Edgar J. Goodspeed.

Saboteur Winning Edge

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Whilst the chances are that you and I haven’t met, I could make a guess that you have at least two different sides to yourself. Perhaps one part of you is primarily happy, successful and productive and you have another side that can be quite the opposite. How much of the time you exist in the empowering mode and how much time in the disempowering mode will vary, depending on you natural disposition and what is going on in your life. Yet in my experience, every individual has the ability to move between these two modes. The more time spent in the empowering mode, the greater the benefit for your business, and of course vice versa.

The seemingly disempowered side of the human psyche has come to be known by some as the saboteur. Everyone has a saboteur, and every business is subject to saboteur like-behaviours demonstrated by everyone through out the organisation – including the leaders of the organisation.

Both on an individual level and an organisational level, the purpose of the saboteur is the same: to resist change whilst also presenting us with a learning opportunity. Whilst individuals usually feel safe with their familiar behaviours, both they and the organisation are likely to be missing out on some opportunities.

Saboteur-like behaviour comes in various guises. As a first step, it is important to simply notice these behaviours. Here are some of the most common ones which you may recognise in yourself or in your team:

• Procrastination – especially putting off the difficult stuff, not going for something in case you fail, lack of confidence, inertia, apathy, expecting disappointment, being distracted, feeling confused.

• Putting others first: not asking for support, not saying “no”.

• Doing too much: being driven, getting overwhelmed, poor time management.

• Not believing in yourself: letting people dominate you

• Needing to be perfect

• Beating yourself up: negative self talk

• Being impulsive, giving up too soon.

The list goes on…

If you recognise some of these behaviours in yourself, don’t despair! There are many ways to disarm your saboteur.

You may wish to start by making your saboteur-like behaviour your friend. Whilst this may sound strange, he/she or it is certainly not your enemy, or a part of you that would benefit from being killed, as I have heard some clients initially say. Accept these behaviours as a normal part of being a human being. You may even be able to laugh at them. Your next move is to set an intention of being willing and open to change.

Converse with your saboteur

Whilst this may sound too “new age” to some, I do recommend you give it a try. Tune into your saboteur and have a conversation with him, her or it. You can do this by writing (using your non-dominant hand for the saboteur), have a direct conversation in your imagination, or you can do chair work (whereby you become the saboteur in chair one, and then yourself in chair two, and keep switching chairs as necessary).

Start by finding out his name, or does he identify himself by his behaviour e.g. victim (“Help me!”), or rescuer (“I’ll look after you”!). You can ask questions such as:

• What are you here for?

• What are the positive payoffs of your behaviours?

• What shall I do?

When you have the answers – take the necessary action. If you don’t get any specific answers, a guess will often be bang on!

Fran’s story illustrates how this can work. Fran started in a new high-powered role which she enjoyed – but there was excessive work for her department and tight deadlines. Before long she had put on a huge amount of weight. When she asked her saboteur what this was all about – the answer came back. She was given a bigger body so she would feel more powerful, and so that she could register her discontent and make appropriate requests. All she needed to do was a combination of saying “no” to excess work, insist on reasonable deadlines, and explain why it was beneficial to recruit new resources. She did put all this into action, and low and behold, her weight did drop off.

When you have your answers, it might sound strange but do say “thank-you” to your saboteur. Be kind and understanding towards yourself. Experiment with using these processes, whenever you need to. I promise you, they work!

Down to earth approach

Sometimes we find that are unhelpful beliefs cause our saboteur to show up.

I have a client, a Managing Director of a communications agency who used to have a deeply ingrained belief: “If you want something doing well, does it yourself”. He knew he could come across as controlling and wanted to be an effective leader, without resorting to control”. Not only that but his self imposed workload meant he was constantly feeling under pressure, as well as alienating some members of his team.

When I asked him which what other approaches would be worth trying, the following range of alternatives emerged from our coaching conversation:

• He could challenge himself by asking himself: “Am I really the best person to do this?” and “Is this the best use of my time/resources?”

• He could challenge his own definition of doing something properly by comparing it with doing something differently

• Whilst he might not have naturally trusted others, it immediately came to him as a wise path to follow.

• The idea of training and coaching his team also made sense

Finally we looked into the possibility that others might may able to do an even better job than he could. He soon realised that one of his directors was already doing just that in the area of business development. He now had evidence that perhaps his old disempowering belief was really not true. When he took on board the new evidence and started experimenting with new ways of being a leader, his old belief became redundant. Instead, a new belief took effect: “I get the best results by trusting and delegating!”

Back to your saboteur. You can be fairly certain that your saboteur will show up in your life next week (or over the next few weeks). My invitation to you is start working with some of the actions I have suggested here. Start wherever you feel most drawn. Do remember that different approaches work for different people, so be prepared to experiment. I’d love to hear how you get on. Do drop me an email telling me what does and doesn’t work for you, or if you have any questions you would like answered, I’d be happy to help.

Stokke Natural Tripp Trapp Chair

Stokke Natural Tripp Trapp Chair When our son got to the age of needing a high chair, I started trying to research different ones but between dealing with a 7 month old, moving, and a bunch of other stuff, we got overwhelmed and decided to go the cheap/easy if temporary route of buying a Fisher Price seat that straps onto a regular dining chair. That worked for a few months… until our son started rocking sideways in the chair, and our chair legs were not wide enough to tolerate it and the whole thing would rock side to side.

It was at this point that a generous and wonderful friend told me that she had an extra Tripp Trapp high chair that her mother had used when her kids were young, and would we like to borrow it? YES! We instantly loved it. The base is wide enough so that no amount of side-ways rocking could tip that thing over sideways. It took a little getting used to not having a tray, but he surprised me as well by actually dealing quite well with eating off a plate on the table (he was about 1 yr old by then). Soon he was also able to get on and off the chair by himself, which I also saw as a huge bonus– I like to encourage independence. At first we’d still use the straps to keep him from getting up before meal time was over, but by about 18-20 months or so we didn’t need them anymore (and whenever he got up, that was the end of the meal… he learned quickly not to get up before he’s done).

My friend forgot to give me the little wrench to adjust the height of the seat and footrest, but it happens to be the same size and shape as the alan wrenches used for Ikea furniture, so I was able to use one of the many that we already had. ; ) No problems there, keep them in a specific drawer with our other tools.

Now, there was *one* time when he pushed himself against the table and the whole chair fell backwards. This was scary, but he fell onto carpet and was fine. I think it needs to be said that this happened while I was in a different room, not watching, not supervising. Since then I’ve been firm about not pushing against the table, and sit with him at every meal so if he starts doing anything dangerous I’m right there to stop him before he tips too far. We’ve never had another scare. I agree there’s the potential, obviously, for this chair to tip, but my guess is many chairs on the market have this same danger if the kid moves wildly enough (*anything* is dangerous if not used properly). Proper supervisions seems like it’d take care of this problem.

My son is now 27 months old, and we’re about to move to a different city, so will have to give this chair back. I am so sold on it (and the ability for him to climb up and down independently– are there *any* other chairs that allow this??) that we will be splurging on our own chair, which we’ll then also use with baby #2.

(BTW we never messed with getting a cushion for the chair, seemed unnecessary to me.. one more thing to clean, and the chair on its own seems comfortable enough) Stokke: Free Shipping on all Tripp Trapp Chairs. Product Details: Dimensions: H31 D19.95 W18 Materials: Cultivated beechwood This is just smart. Despite it’s overwhelmingly complicated name, the STOKKE KinderZeat, is a valuable transitional seating solution for kids who are too big (or think themselves too big) for a highchair but not yet ready for full-size kitchen chairs. Triangularly shaped, the chair features an adjustable seat and an adjustable foot rest so it can be tailored specifically to the needs of growing kids. The foot rest also functions as a sort of ladder rung so younger kids can climb up into the seat. What’s remarkable about the KinderZeat, again besides the name, is how incredibly strong it is. The fact that it can withstand 300 pounds doesn’t just mean Dad can jump up and down on it, it means that the chair can easily take all the punishment that high-impact kids routinely dish out. –Charlie Williams Stokke Natural Tripp Trapp Chair
