Wood Checkers/Tic Tac Toe

If you’re looking for a set to play checkers (and/or tic-tac-toe), this set will probably fit the bill just fine. The gameboard and checkers themselves are solid wood, and you could probably use the gameboard as a cutting board if you grew tired of the game — it’s that thick and strong. It’s currently at a nice price, too.

Some cons about this set: the included instructions are not very detailed, about one paragraph long, so hopefully you already know how to play the game. (For what it’s worth, it contain several typos, too.) Clearly the company didn’t invest a lot of effort in the instructions.

The checkers have an embossed pattern on one side, but in my set, one of the checkers wasn’t embossed. It’s not a big deal, but I think shows some lack of quality control on the part of the manufacterer.

One more thing to throw out: the gameboard smells like — and I am not making this up — barbecue. Maybe it’s made of mesquite or something. It’s a fairly strong scent, pretty much detectible the whole time while playing the game. It’s not a bad smell. Who knows, it might even be a selling point if you like barbecue.

I absolutely love the combination chess board and backgammon game set. What makes this design so wonderful is that the folding board also has a handle to carry this combination game set. The major downside to this set is that the construction is made of very very thin wood or stimulated wood and is extremely fragile. This would not be a good game set for young people because of its lack of durability.

Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Chinese Checkers Game Board

Hi! I bought a cheap sheet metal version for $[...] at Walmart. Considering the fact that my kids aged 10 & 7 liked this game very much, I went looking for something (i) a little more durable , and (ii) something having the game area, i.e., the star, large enough that moving and placing the marbles is not an issue. After doing a search in other department stores and on the web, I purchased the present unit. The board looks durable and at least 1.5″ thick. Though the overall board measures 19.5″ x 19.2″, the star is a lot smaller, more like 12″ in diameter. As a result picking and placing the marbles is still a problem. There is lot of empty space all around the border. Melissa & Doug may consider increasing the size of the game area, i.e., the star.
