Measuring your running in miles and minutes is fine when you are starting out, but if you want to become fitter, faster and stronger, then training with a heart rate (HR) monitor will allow you to gauge the true effort you are putting in to every run.

Find your MHR

There is more precision with HR monitor training because it is personal to you and how your body is feeling on any particular day. The first step to training using HR zones is to find your maximum heart rate (MHR).

MHR formula

For a rough estimate, use the following formula:

o Men: 214 – (0.8 x age)

o Women: 209 – (0.9 x age)

So a 33-year-old woman, for example, would be:

209 – (0.9 X 33) 179.3.

Treadmill test

To calculate your maximum HR more accurately – since some people’s can deviate from this estimate by as much as 24 beats per minute – do this simple treadmill test.

Wearing a HR monitor, warm up slowly for about 10 minutes, before running as fast as you can evenly for three minutes. Get your breath back by jogging for a few minutes, then again run as fast as you can evenly for three minutes. Note your maximum HR (this might be halfway through the three-minute bursts rather than at the end).

Resting HR

That’s the hard part over – the next step you must take is to measure your resting heart rate (RHR). For the next five days, take your pulse when you wake up every morning. Add the rates together and divide by five to find an average.

Working heart rate

The final step is to calculate what your working heart rate (WHR) should be when you are running. Using the following formula you can calculate your working heart rate at different levels of effort. If you want an easy run at 6o per cent effort, for example, the formula would be:

(MHR-RHR) x 0.60 (per cent effort) + RHR = WHR

So if you have a MHR of 190 and RHR of 55, then your WHR should be 136 beats per minute: (190 – 55) x 0.60 + 55 = 136

Heart rate zones are roughly divided into:

o Easy (60-75 per cent)

o Moderate (75-85 per cent)

o Hard (85-95 per cent)

These percentages refer to your WHR calculated using the formula above rather than a simple percentage of your MHR.

Monitoring your running

As you become fitter, running a certain distance at a certain HR should become easier, on a set route, run at a steady pace and note your time and heart rate. Try the same route again in a couple of weeks at the same steady pace. Your HR should be lower on the second run.

The 2009 Hyundai Elantra comes with the exterior styling and body design of European model. Elantra has been quite popular throughout the world, but in the Indian market it has special significance because it happens to be India’s first high performance luxury sedan car marketed at low price range.

The 2009 Elantra is offered in two different engines – the 2.0 liter diesel Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) engine and the 1.8 liter Dumi overhead Camshaft petrol engine. The four cylinders CRDI generates 112.2 bhp of power at 4000 rotations per minute and the other variant produces 127 bhp at 6000 rotations per minute. The new Elantra is equipped with the advanced features like Electronic Brake Force Distribution System, Traction Control System and the Brake Assist Control.

The striking features in the vehicle include temperature sensors that have intelligence to sense the temperature in the car and the independent suspension. Other features apart from these two are Ultra smooth all wheel independent suspension, Ultra sensitive automatic temperature sensing, rear and front gas filled shock absorbers, generous room space and the advanced tubeless tires.

The vehicle is being offered in two different models – Ebony Black (EB) and the Noble White (NW). Hyundai aims at providing greater security and safety features in the Elantra model.

As of now, the most noticeable ones amongst these will be Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBD), Traction Control System (TCS), Passenger presence Detector, Anti Lock Braking System (ABS), Energy Absorbing Collapsible Steering Column, Brake Assistance System and the Pre-tension Seat Belts.

Looking at its awards and achievements, the 2008 Hyundai Elantra was awarded the “Best Value for Money Car of the Year” title, by the CNBC TV18.

The Jaguar XF motor car has a modern feel and an air of superior craftsmanship. The centre console is high and wide so that it envelops driver and front passenger. A seven-inch colour touch-screen controls most cabin functions, reducing buttons to a single intuitive panel. The dashboard fascia is brushed aluminium and polished wood, flawlessly detailed. The XF employs a unique entry and start-up system. First, there is a keyless entry system that is available on select XF models. The system automatically activates when the Jaguar Smart Key that correlates with the car goes near the car. When the door is opened the car will activate its unlocking procedures. Inside, you will notice the red start button on the console is pulsing like a heartbeat. Press the button and the rotary shifter rises up into the palm of your hand, signaling you to select a drive option. The air vents rotate to open and the navigation system will automatically turn on after this is done.

The engine for the Jaguar XF is one of the most powerful engines among Jaguar cars. This engine is a 4.2L V8 engine. This features thirty two values and four overhead cams. Camshaft phasing can be manually controlled so that different responses can be used for different driving situations. Additional automatic shift modes are programmed for different driving conditions including Drive, Sport and Winter modes. Manual gear can be used as well.

In keeping with the rest of the car industry, computer aided design has been used in the design of the XF´s light, but high-strength new generation steel body shell that is torsionally stiff for safe, precise handling. ABS antilock brakes with traction and cornering controls reduce stopping distances without sacrificing stability. In addition a computer active technology suspension senses the contour of the road and adjusts the ride accordingly for optimum comfort. Two-stage Dynamic Stability Control manages grip when conditions vary. These active safeguards are complimented by two-stage driver and front passenger airbags, occupant position and weight sensing, front seat head restraints, and ´soft-landing´ technology in safety belt retractors.

There are all sorts of additional options that can be used for this car. A rear parking camera can be used for parking in tight areas with ease. The rear window has an available sunblind too. The car also uses Bluetooth and iPod integration as well.
