Having a nice appearance is related to how you keep yourself healthy. The minds of the many are mostly dominated with making their overall appearance look better and better each day. Sometimes, we find ourselves gazing on hundreds of celebrity magazines just to check out what the latest on fashion is, and how to keep us updated with the phases of style. Celebrities play a big role on how to influence people. Before, we could notice that most top celebrities are seen on all covers of the newspapers or magazines, being talked about a small scandal or gossip about them. Today, we have scrunched on seeing b and c list celebrities on the magazine covers as they do their simple doings in their daily lives. People talked about the little things they do. Everything is changing and we cannot tell whether these changes are negative or beneficial. Therefore, what significant matters are we going to obtain when we browse these magazines.

The fashion world is humongous, and anyone would not deny that, but what is within fashion that will be beneficial for each one of us. Can we say that fashion is something that would relate a normal person to some high class individual or we just really need some assistance on how to make our self look presentable in front of other people? Maybe we could stick to the 2nd concept that fashion is our guide to making our own style and help our self look and be confident to face the world.

If some kind of denim style is a hit this year and you come rising to the stores to get a pair, you should not do all these things, rather think about what your style is and what clothes you are comfortable of wearing and if a pair of jeans which is in fashion does not fit you, do not go for it. Some people have a great body shape, therefore, these individuals do not have any hassle on choosing any kind of pair of jeans whether in style or outdated.

Other styles of jeans, don’t look good on some jeans as well. Picking out styles from all of the fashion trends available is what really matters on creating your own individuality. But remember to not overdo it because you might look ridiculous in the end. If you want to create your own fashion sense, then you may try to refrain from going to huge shopping malls rather drop by some smaller fashion outlets or independent clothing retails that provide clothing lines which are not produced at large quantities.

Mercury Makes Some Changes to the 2010 Mountaineer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Mercury Mountaineer, Mercury’s version of the midsize Ford Explorer SUV, returns for 2010 with no engine changes.

Base and Premier models come standard with a 4.0-liter SOHC V6. This 12-valve engine is the latest iteration of Ford’s long-lived Cologne V6, developed in the mid-sixties by Ford of Germany. Originally an all-iron pushrod engine, it was updated in 1997 with aluminum heads and overhead camshafts. A jackshaft in the block, located where the camshaft used to reside, drives each cam via a timing chain. This engine is shared with the Ford Explorer, as well as the Ford Ranger, Mazda B-Series, Land Rover LR3, and Ford Mustang. In the Mountaineer, it produces 210 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque.

Optional on Premier models is Ford’s 4.6-liter modular V8. This SOHC engine, shared by the Explorer, Expedition, Mustang, and F-150 pickup, is also a very old design, dating back to 1991. Truck versions of this engine were updated in 2006 with three valves per cylinder and Ford’s Variable Cam Timing system, but they still use a cast-iron block. In the Mountaineer, the 24-valve V8 makes 292 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque.

Critics find both engines more than adequate for the Mountaineer’s weight, although even the V8 fails to match the muscle of newer rivals like the Nissan Armada. In daily commuting, the V8 does not feel dramatically stronger than the V6, although its extra torque gives it the edge for towing, and it is noticeably more refined. Both engines are well muffled, except at full throttle.

With nearly two and a half tons to haul, neither engine is thrifty. Surprisingly, EPA estimates suggest that the V8 is the more economical of the two, thanks mostly to its six-speed automatic; the V6′s automatic has only five speeds. Both engines use regular fuel.

Ronnie is currently the lead researcher for SWEngines.com. He logs various news regarding Mercury Mountaineer Engine and related items.

Collective Action For Disaster Management

It’s befitting that the issue of disaster management was highlighted at the recent 35th UNESCO general conference in Paris since it served as one ideal platform to remind the world community of the challenges which natural disasters posed and the consequences of inaction. It’s noteworthy that the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took the mantle to sound the clarion for collective action on managing natural disasters. There has been numerous wake-up calls given by various quarters notably international aid agencies, disaster management institutions and practitioners, yet it somehow got lost in the milieu of challenges and issues at hand. Inclusion of climate change and disaster management in his keynote address at the conference was timely and opportune coming in the wake of the string of natural disasters which affected some Asian countries.

The call to action was clearly intimated when he stated that “We have to manage some of the natural disasters that occur in our regions” prior to the conference. (i) His thrust on climate change and in the same spirit, disaster management, resonates well with those international agencies and institutions already deeply involved in providing humanitarian assistance to recent disasters in the region. At the conference , the Malaysian Prime Minister aptly drove home the point that climate change posed a major challenge to the present generation and not just those in the distant future. Its impact was clearly illustrated through the recent experience with major natural disasters and catastrophes, including the earthquake in Padang, Indonesia, tsunami in Western Samoa, hurricanes in the Philippines and the major floods in Southern India. These calamities remind us on how fragile the world is, and how interdependent our world has become. (ii)

The emphasis is on sustaining the quality of life for mankind for future generations, and focussing on need for a strong global commitment and action to address the adverse effects of climate change. In essence, our survival rests on the world community’s willingness to address disaster management challenges and related issues collectively and with concerted will. He has long recognized that countries beset with natural disasters should expedite steps to mitigate the impact of disasters and with the increasing magnitude of calamities faced, it behooves comprehensive collective action. It’s rare indeed to see a leader showing a sustained and avid interest in disaster management and this is clearly reflected in Datuk Seri Najib’s purposeful tabling of the issue at such forum. Throughout his tenure as a Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister, he has on several occasions been on the forefront of promoting initiatives in that direction. In June 2006, during a high-level security forum in Singapore, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak called for the setting up of a regional based humanitarian relief centre to be mobilized in the event of disaster.

The call for collective action on disaster management is not new. Yet, inititiatives in this area is seldom seen vested in the leadership nor governments. At the 7th Asian Security Summit , held in June 2007, at the heels of natural disasters which befall Myanmar and the People’s Republic of China, he called for collective action, with initiatives for the former spear-headed by ASEAN ( Association of South-East Asian Nations). Datuk Najib subscribed to the idea that disaster risk should be taken seriously and the severity of natural disasters impact on lives and livelihoods as well as the development of nations could no longer be ignored and. Grounded as an economist, he recognized that marginal investment in incorporating hazard resistance could have protected property and assets. Without appropriate mitigating measures, development achieved over years of investment could be completely wiped out in a natural disaster. Acknowledging that vulnerability rest with the communities at the ground level, building effectiveness of disaster management at the community level was of utmost importance since local needs and risks could be adequately assessed and managed. Highlighting disaster risk reduction measures, he placed emphasis on community based initiatives to minimize vulnerabilities. He fully recognized the wider collective responsibility of stakeholders and the importance of partnership in handling disaster risk reduction.

At that stage he was already pronouncing consideration to incorporate disaster risk reduction elements in new development plans and ensuring community resilience in facing natural hazards. Integrating disaster risk reduction into plans, programmes, and development projects together with developing or modifying policies, laws, and organizational arrangements are aspects which need to be undertaken, according to him. The negative economic implications on development arising from natural disasters are enormous. Datuk Najib reiterated the Malaysian government’s commitment to disaster risk reduction through continuing its efforts towards implementing the priority areas of the Hyogo Framework for Action. In addressing disaster management, the Malaysian government since the 1990s had put into place policy, infrastructure and operational mechanisms to ensure coordination and partnership with all pertinent stakeholders.

With human catastrophe resulting from natural disasters reaching similar level of conflict situations, calamities certainly deserve collective attention and action. (iv) It’s hightime that governments and the leadership take the lead in disaster management. It’s heartwarming when leadership is perceived to grasp the elements and dynamics of disaster management and taking a proactive stand.

Mustek DV5200 6-in-1 Multi-Function Camcorder w/1.5″ LCD & 4x Digital Zoom Good for small projects – U. lucero – Wyoming USA
This camera is small and light, that was a plus. You have to learn how to get around on it, as in deleting, transferring files to the computer, learning how to change options, ect which is kind of confusing and takes time to learn. Unless you get a memory card, dont plan on saving or video taking much..as it doesnt hold much memory at all. Its annoying to have to keep downloading to the computer to have more memory. It came with an awesome cd program for movie making and picture editing. In all, I like the camera, even my daughter can use it without huriting it, but its not for long trips or exppert video taking. And it doesnt cost much, so no big waste in money.
it is just ok… – Johnnycakes – Conroe, TX
This little camera is handy…but not always reliable. We took a cruise to Alaska from Vancouver and I thought this would be a great little toy to take with me. Some of the pictures and video turned out great. Some was extremely grainy. Many of the pictures were completely out of focus, and while that does not surprise me on landscapes, portrait shots of people taken less than 12 feet away should not have focus issues. The video recorder itself works ok, but I would suggest spending just a little more and getting something with better quality.

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art Sensationell gut! – Parsec –

I like to take things apart and figure out how they work, except instead of doing internal combustion engines or pocket watches I like to play with books, movies and television shows. In “Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art,” Scott McCloud not only takes apart comic books, he puts them back together again. Certainly comics are a neglected art form. Put Superman, Batman, Spawn and Spider-Man on the big screen and there will be some cursory comments about the actual all-in-color-for-a-dime, and names like Stan Lee and Frank Miller will get kicked around, but nobody really talks about how comics work (the exception that proves the rule would be the Hughes brothers talking about adapting the “From Hell” graphic novels). Part of the problem is conceptual vocabulary: we can explain in excruciating detail how the shower scene in “Psycho” works in terms of shot composition, montage, scoring, etc. That sort of conceptual vocabulary really does not exist and McCloud takes it upon himself to pretty much create it from scratch.

That, of course, is an impressive achievement, especially since he deals with functions as well as forms. To that we add McCloud’s knowledge of art history, which allows him to go back in time and find the origins of comics in pre-Columbian picture manuscripts, Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Bayeux Tapestry. Topping all of this off is McCloud’s grand and rather obvious conceit, that his book about the art of comic books is done AS a comic book. This might seem an obvious approach, but that does not take away from the fact that the result is a perfect marriage of substance and form.

This volume is divided into nine chapters: (1) Setting the Record Straight, which develops a proper dictionary-style definition of “comics”; (2) The Vocabulary of Comics, detailing the iconic nature of comic art; (3) Blood in the Gutter, establishing the different types of transitions between frames of comic art, which are the building blocks of how comics work; (4) Time Frames, covers the ways in which comics manipulate time, including depictions of speed and motion; (5) Living in Line, explores how emotions and other things are made visible in comics; (6) Show and Tell, looks at the interchangeability of words and pictures in various combinations; (7) The Six Steps, details the path comic book creators take in moving from idea/purpose to form to idiom to structure to craft to surface (but not necessarily in that order); (8) A Word About Color, reminds us that even though this particular book is primarily in black & white, color has its uses in comic books; and (9) Putting It All Together, finds McCloud getting philosophical about the peculiar place of comic books in the universe.

“Understanding Comics” works for both those who are reading pretty much every comic book done by anyone on the face of the planet and those who have never heard of Wil Eisner and Art Spigelman, let alone recognize their artwork. Which ever end of the spectrum you gravitate towards McCloud incorporates brief examples of some of the artwork of the greatest comic book artists, such as Kirby, Herge, Schultz, etc., as well as work by more conventional artists, including Rembrandt, Hokusai, and Van Gogh. “Understanding Comics” is a superb look at the form and functions of the most underexplored art form in popular culture.

I am using Spider-Man comic books in my Popular Culture class this year and will be using some of McCloud’s key points to help the cherubs in their appreciation of what they are reading. If you have devoted hundreds of hours of your life to reading comic books, then you can take a couple of hours to go through this book and have a better understanding and appreciation of why you take funny books so seriously. : As all good card-carrying comic-book fans know, their sheer passion will never overcome narrow-minded critics and their baying cries of derision. There is far more to this perpetually underrated medium than a mix of art and prose. With this indispensable, spellbinding tome, writer/artist Scott McCloud rises to the challenge of dissecting what remains the most enigmatic of art forms. After all, says McCloud, “No other art form gives so much to its audience while asking so much from them as well”. Over the course of 215 impeccably formed pages, McCloud joyously exposes and deconstructs a hidden world of icons in a most literate and valid manner. His charming guidance finds a place where Time and Space is effortlessly malleable and the reader is both a willing accomplice and necessary vessel for comics’ singular magic. Cunningly presented in comic form, McCloud (or his comic equivalent) conducts a journey that spans thousands of years, taking in art from Prehistoric Man to the Egyptians to Van Gogh to Jack Kirby. Never has psychological and cultural analysis been so understandably clear, beautifully aided by clever visuals and his truly infectious love for the medium. By the end of this funny, charming, rare and exciting book, you’ll not doubt the notion that a comic book “…is a vacuum into which our identity and awareness are pulled … an empty shell that we inhabit which enables us to travel to another realm”. A fine exchange for a little faith and a world of imagination. –Danny Graydon A comic book about comic books. McCloud, in an incredibly accessible style, explains the details of how comics work: how they’re composed, read and understood. More than just a book about comics, this gets to the heart of how we deal with visual languages in general. “The potential of comics is limitless and exciting!” writes McCloud. This should be required reading for every school teacher. Pulitzer Prize-winner Art Spiegelman says, “The most intelligent comics I’ve seen in a long time.” Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

When it Comes to Networking Comfort is Not a Requirement

I attended my first national convention in 1999 and didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. I was going on the advice, “If you want to be a national speaker, you have to network nationally.” That made sense, so I decided to attend the AWC (Association for Women in Communication) national convention in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Once I got there, I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t just walk up to people and say, “Hey, do you need a motivational speaker or a workshop?”

I didn’t have the networking skills one needs to begin the relationship building process. I also lacked the social skills to connect with people. For example, instead of focusing on others and learning about their profession, I compared myself with others, and sure enough, every time I sat down at a general session, I had to converse with a Clarion winner or the president of a company, which did little to raise my confidence level.

I learned a lot from that experience: Keep your focus on others instead of on yourself. To create enjoyable conversations, research before attending a meeting whether it is a local or national event. Ask questions to uncover important information. Most of all, remember that relationship building takes time and you might not see instant results as far as increased sales or new business. You might not even recognize the opportunities in front of you when you first get started.

Realize that if you have been out of the loop, you might be uncomfortable or make several mistakes.

I admit that I was uncomfortable at my first national conference, but I kept repeating a mantra “comfort isn’t a requirement for me.” In fact, on the night of the Clarion Awards Banquet I was seated by two Clarion winners, one from Atlanta Georgia and the other from Washington DC. I remember feeling inadequate because I didn’t live in a big metropolitan area, and I was just starting my professional career. At one point the woman from Atlanta complimented me on my dress and asked, “So, are you having a good time?” To which I replied, “No, actually I’m quite miserable, but fortunately for me, comfort is not a requirement.” (Both women looked at me like I was from outer space!) Even though it was embarrassing at the time, it has become one of my favorite stories when I perform a keynote or workshop about networking. Even though I realized my faux pas, I forged on and made the best of the situation.

Why do people stumble when they hear the word “networking?” Many people think of networking as exchanging lots of business cards, going to a social function, or getting leads. But networking is building relationships and relationship building means you develop common interests, build trust, communicate on a regular basis and find mutual ways to help each other. In other words, you become a resource to others.

At that national convention many years ago, I became friends with several people that I still stay in touch with by e-mail and phone. Out of that one event (where I didn’t have a clue,) came a speaking opportunity at a national convention, a working relationship with a PR professional and an article in Fitness magazine and several interviews on radio and magazines, but it didn’t happen over night. The more relationships we build the more fun business is and you can start the process in your local club.

If you are a seasoned member of a civic or business club, become aware of new members in your club and invite them to sit with you. Make it a habit to call those who have recently joined and make them feel welcome. Use your club as a “vehicle” to invite that prospect that you have been trying to do business with. Be mindful of what it was like when you were just starting, moving from another state or feeling a bit overwhelmed, and consciously look for those who have transferred from another city. Give potential members a call and tell them about what your organization has meant to you.

If you are a new to networking and you are frustrated, just remember that relationship building is long term. There is no way you can predict all the wonderful things in store for you three or five years from now. Just do the work and trust the process, and remember that comfort is not a requirement!
