Dieser Atlas ist schön übersichtlich. Das einzige Manko ist, dass es keine komplette Weltkarte gibt.
: Kinder sind neugierig. Und sie sind offen für alles, was es auf unserer Erde zu entdecken gibt. Mit dem Großen Ravensburger Weltatlas können Leser ab 10 Jahren bequem von zuhause aus die Welt bereisen, die nicht nur in aufregenden Satellitenbildern anschaulich wird. Rund 100 Reliefdarstellungen informieren auf anregende Art und Weise über die Oberflächenstruktur der Kontinente und Länder, die mit zahlreichen Informationen zu Einwohnern und markanten Orten, Tradition und Kultur sowie Flora und Fauna auf zumeist zwei Doppelseiten vorgestellt werden. Ein Register mit über 9.000 Stichwörtern macht die Suche nach Informationen für den nächsten Urlaub oder das nächste Referat zum Kinderspiel.
Ein Manko jedoch hat auch Der große Ravensburger Weltatlas. Wie viele andere Produkte dieser Sparte ist auch er eine Lizenzausgabe — sprich: Übersetzung — aus dem Englischen bzw. Amerikanischen, mit allen Nachteilen für den deutschen Leser. Dies spiegelt sich unter anderem in der Gewichtung der geographischen Artikel: Während sich etwa zu den USA fünf Doppelseiten finden, muss sich Deutschland mit Österreich und der Schweiz zwei Doppelseiten teilen — weniger, als dem Urlaubsland Italien zur Verfügung steht. Auch die Informationen zu unserer Heimat zielen eher auf eine touristische Perspektive. Deutsche Kultur wird fast ausschließlich auf Bayern (Dirndl, Oktoberfest, Neuschwanstein) und die obligatorische Kuckucksuhr reduziert, über die Schweiz erfährt man, das von dort berühmte Käse und Präzisionsuhren stammen. Das ist wohl eher das, was der amerikanische (oder japanische) Besucher für einen Zwei-Tagestrip über Deutschland und seinen Nachbarn wissen will.
Ansonsten aber gibt Der große Ravensburger Weltatlas kompetent und schön illustriert Auskunft über (fast) alles, was Kinder über unsere Welt wissen wollen. Ein überaus schön gemachter Band, der einem vor allem die Fremde näher bringt. –Thomas Köster
