Medical Drugs Dangerous Reactions

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Medical drugs are far from safe and there are often adverse reactions in the body associated with taking medical drugs. Adverse drug reactions are reactions that are unintended or undesired. If you take or intend to take medically prescribed drugs you need to be aware of the potential for these reactions in the body. Many people believe that taking medical drugs is the only option open to them. However, in many situations, this is not the case and there are a wide range of effective alternatives that do not have the adverse reactions on many medical drugs.
There are five main groups into which these adverse reactions can be placed. Those that:
- adversely affect the blood cells,
- cause toxicity in the liver,
- damage the kidneys,
- affect the skin, and
- affect the unborn baby.
In addition to these groupings there are individual reactions such as:
- allergic reactions,
- hypersensitivity,
- tolerance,
- dependence,
- drug interactions,
- destruction of vitamins and minerals,
- drug accumulation and so forth.
There are a number of factors that will influence the possibility of adverse drug reactions. These include:
- The number of drugs that a person is taking. The greater the number being taken the greater the likelihood that there will be an interaction between these drugs. The effects of these interactions are impossible to accurately determine – especially when the number of drugs taken exceeds two or three.
- Women, theoretically only require 3/4 of the male adult dose. This is related to the weight and metabolic differences between men and women. Often this difference is not taken into account when women are prescribed drugs and when they take over-the-counter medications. This means that there could be an increased risk of adverse reactions for women.
- The age of the person taking the drugs is also influential. Babies, children and the elderly all require modifications to the full adult dose. This is due to their reduced ability to metabolise and detoxify the drugs. Dosages in these cases are related to their weight and age. Digitalis (digoxin) is a very toxic drug used in heart disease – its dosages are related to the person’s body weight.
The disease state itself can contribute to drug side effects. For example:
- Taking digitalis when a person has kidney problems can lead to the accumulation of the drug (because the kidneys are unable to get rid of it from the body) and this can lead to digitalis toxicity – a very serious situation.
- A low level of potassium in the presence of digitalis increases the sensitivity of the heart muscle to digitalis toxicity – again a very serious situation.
- The presence of liver diseases such as hepatitis (an inflammation of the liver) or cirrhosis (a chronic degenerative disease of the liver) can lead to the accumulation of the drugs that are normally detoxified by the liver.
- A person who has allergic reactions to other drugs, food, pollens, dust, or other substance may be more likely to have adverse reactions to drugs.
- People undergoing treatment for cancer will generally have toxic effects from that treatment – depending on the dose and the nature of the drugs used.
- Some people have individual reactions to particular drugs – because of the uniqueness of their genetic make up.
- The use of cigarettes, alcohol and tranquillizers plus other drugs increases the possibility of an adverse reaction to the drugs – because of the combined effects that these drugs have on the chemistry in the body.
Symptoms associated with adverse drug reactions can be divided into three groups:
- life threatening (as in an major allergic reaction – which unless dealt with immediately could be fatal),
- severe or
- irritating and uncomfortable.
The symptoms generally subside when the drug which caused the reaction is withdrawn. An allergic response (or hypersensitivity) to a drug forms the majority of side effects or adverse drug reactions. These allergic responses generally follow a particular pattern:
There is an initial exposure to the drug – this establishes the allergic reaction and a state in which the person is now allergic to that drug.
Once the allergic state has been established an allergic reaction can be started by even very small amounts of the drug that is responsible for the reaction. The allergic reaction will occur each time the drug is taken.
The reaction can lead to the following:
- skin rashes that can be itchy, flaky, purple spots or red and raised,
- nausea and vomiting and other gut reactions such as diarrhoea,
- tightness and swelling in the lungs and throat which can cause difficulty in breathing.
These allergic reactions are often seen with the use of antibiotics in particular penicillins. However, they can occur with the use of any drugs.
Many drugs that are in common use have the side effects of:
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- diarrhoea,
- rashes and
- itching.
This list of side effects is however far from extensive as many adverse reactions are possible. Some other common side effects are:
- headaches,
- dizziness,
- constipation,
- felling faint,
- general fatigue and weakness,
- hand tremors,
- sweating,
- drowsiness,
- confusion,
- blurred or double vision,
- weight gain,
- acne,
- dry mouth,
- sensitivity to light,
- abdominal pain,
- the development of ulcers,
- ringing in the ears and
- so forth.
There are many possible adverse reactions to medical drugs. If you are taking medical drugs or are intending to take them you need to be aware of these possible reactions as well as the toxic effects of the medication. The list of possible side effects is very lengthy and extends for the annoying to the life threatening. Many people believe that taking medical drugs is the only option open to them – this however, in many situations, is not the case. There are often effective alternatives to the use of pharmaceutical medication. However, if you are currently taking pharmaceutical medication it is not wise to cease that medication without the supervision of a health professional.

Special Education Inclusion

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Special education inclusion signifies the participation of special education students in regular education classrooms and provision of support services to these students. The main objective of inclusion education is that all students in a school, regardless of their strengths and their weaknesses in any area, become part of the school community. Every student develops a feeling of belonging with other students, teachers, and support staff. In segregated special education, children will not learn how to function in a non-disabled world. For instance, children who are disabled in terms of communication and are emotionally distressed would not communicate and might remain in a more emotionally disturbed state in segregated settings. The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) holds it mandatory for schools to educate children with disabilities in general education classrooms.
The prime advantage of special education inclusion is that both disabled and non-disabled students are brought together in an environment of togetherness. Children learn to accept individual differences in inclusion education and this would lead to the development of new friendly relationships. Inclusion education also enables active participation of parents in their child’s education. The law also states that students with disabilities have a legal right to attend regular classes and receive an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. Although the advantages are many, inclusion education creates an uncertainty regarding the roles and responsibilities of regular classroom teachers and special education teachers. However, researches show that inclusion education can be made effective by a healthy collaboration of special education teachers and regular teachers. With the assistance of services that would be available from the health department, physical education department, occupational therapists, speech therapists, etc., the school administration can aid the teachers to develop active lesson plans for inclusion education. Thus schools can create a cooperative learning environment and promote socialization.

Car Dealer Giving Away Free AK-47′s With New Trucks!
Butler, MO car dealer Mark Muller talks about his popular promotion in which anyone who purchases a truck receives a free AK-47. You can tell the interview gets off on the right foot when Carol Costello introduces him as “Max Muller.” She also butchers his car dealership’s slogan, and then he questions whether or not she has “a problem with God.” Interesting interview.
Lower Cholesterol Naturally – Alternatives to Statin Drugs

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Huge topic. I can write a book on this but best not yet! Two more years of med school yet and by then I’ll be even more versed in how to lower cholesterol naturally.
First: What is cholesterol?
According to Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, cholesterol is “the most abundant steroid in animal tissues, especially in bile and gall stones, and present in food, especially rich in animal fats, circulates in plasma complexed to proteins of various densities and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atheroma formation in arteries.”
What is pathogenesis of atheroma? It is the beginning stage of atherosclerosis which is the building of lipid [cholesterol] plaques within the structure of arteries. These plaques narrow the vessel wall thereby limiting the flow of blood. Limiting the flow of blood causes turbulence which causes further deposition of plaque. The slowed speed of blood through the arteries helps lay down more plaque as well.
Ways to lower cholesterol naturally:
- Exercise: damn. How many times do you have to hear it – everyone says it. Because it works better than any drug out there. Why does it work? Simple biochemistry and physiology. Exercise requires energy. Energy comes from sugars, fats and proteins. When the sugars and proteins are burned, fats must be converted into useable forms of energy. The liver steps up by making good cholesterol, HDL. HDL goes around and picks up bad cholesterol, LDL. It converts this into useable energy. So, by exercising, your energy requirements increase thereby lowering cholesterol naturally. Exercise 30 minutes a day as often as you can in a week. Try one day a week and build up. You’ll become addicted to it. Better that than statins.
- Eat soluble fiber: Where can you find that? In beans and whole grains. Fruits and vegetables contain insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber actually binds to cholesterol removing it from your body. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your stools making you more regular – which is extremely vital as well.
- Limit animal fat foods: damn again. Even Stedman’s Medical Dictionary said cholesterol is the most abundant steroid in animal tissues. They didn’t say plant tissues. I’m not saying avoid it completely. Just keep an eye on it – don’t chomp down endless roast beef sandwhiches with mayo and four kinds of cheese.
- Inositol: This is time-released niacin in the no-flush form. Niacin is a main player in cellular metabolism. If one is low in niacin, then the energy reactions do not go forward. If they do not go forward, lipids accumulate which is directly tied to high levels of choleterol. A study on time-released niacin shows its effectiveness. The study I found used pharmaceutical time-released niacin but I believe these two are very similar – with the natural form being superior. The bottom line of the study: “The results show that niacin ER [extended release] produces a beneficial effect on lipoprotein subclasses, specifically decreasing the more atherogenic small, dense LDL particles and enhancing the cardioprotective large HDL particles.” Remember what I said about bad LDL and good HDL? The inositol sounds pretty good now doesn’t it?
- Red Yeast Rice: This is what the pharmaceutical companies make some statin drugs from – directly! So why not take it in its natural state? It works quite well. It works by limiting the cholesterol reaction from going forward. This means that cholesterol’s production is slowed down thereby lowering cholesterol naturally. I have found a great research article on PubMed for Red Yeast Rice. The research was done by the Center for Human Nutrition and is not biased by a natural supplement company. Here is another study about the cholesterol-lowering effects of a proprietary Chinese red-yeast-rice dietary supplement.
- Policosanol: This is sugar wax. Sound safe? It is. It does not turn off the cholesterol forming reaction as strongly as statin drugs. Our bodies need some cholesterol formed. Without it, numerous hormones would not be made and we would be dead. Thus, it is better to moderately limit production rather than severly limit. Policosanol has also shown to increase the levels of HDL. Do statin drugs do this? No. There is a good study on Policosanol that I found on PubMed. You’ll notice it is not a study made by a natural supplement company or with biased interests. The title of the study is: Comparison of the efficacy and tolerability of policosanol with atorvastatin in elderly patients with type II hypercholesterolaemia.
-
Bio Lipotrol:
Bio-Lipotrol has been shown to naturally lower cholesterol [http://www.healthegoods.com/product/bio-lipotrol-biogenesis-biolipotrol/natural-health-supplements]. Bio Lipotrol has Red Yeast Rice, Inositol, Policosanol and Guggal Gum extract. I have visited with physician after physician that have used Bio Lipotrol and the results are seen within a few weeks. Now this doesn’t mean you can sit on your couch eating hamburgers and pizza while popping Bio Lipotrol capsules. I have already stated that exercise is the best medicine – along with the limitation of animal fats and an increase in soluble fiber. I did not know about Bio Lipotrol until a classmate kept buying it. I found her in the hall one day and asked her what it is. She told me it is working very well on her grandmother’s high cholesterol levels. Then I became more interested. The benefits of being in med school – you find what works and what doesn’t.
What are the dangers of Statin drugs?
I don’t know all of the dangers but I know one that is not often addressed. Statin drugs give the false impression that the one taking them does not have to be proactive in lowering cholesterol. If a drug is lowering cholesterol without them doing anything, why not chomp on fatty foods? I’ll tell you why. Statin drugs limit the production of cholesterol. They do not limit the intake of cholesterol. You do.
Also – statin drugs seriously limit the production of Coenzyme Q10. This is a major energy source for the human heart and electron transport chain. So if you are on statin drugs, take CoQ10. I believe statin drugs also limit the conversion of active Vitamin D. This I need to check on but it makes sense if following the reactions down from HMG-CoA, which is the limiting step in cholesterol synthesis.
If you want to lower cholesterol naturally, these steps will no doubt help you. I recommend having a sit-down chat with your physician. Most docs will listen to you and be supportive and knowledgable about this arena. If not, find a licensed and qualified naturopathic physician who will listen to you.
This information is not telling you to stop taking your statin drugs. It is merely information. Do not stop your statin drugs without consulting with your physician. Only then, under their direction, stop the meds if you implement other means.
If you are not on statin drugs and you don’t have money to see a doctor, these steps may help you lower cholestrol naturally. But as I am not a doctor yet, I am not prescribing any of this information to you. It is up to you.
I hope you are still awake. That is a ton of information. I know I’m wiped. I’ve got to get away from this computer now.
Take care and stay healthy. And again – if you have any health questions, do ask me. I am here to help.
In health,
Ben

Satellite Internet on Your Boat

Image : http://www.flickr.com
One of the great pleasures of owning a boat is being able to get away from the daily grind for a while. Out on the water, you have a sense of freedom and independence that you can never quite attain on claustrophobic city streets. Just the same, there are frequent moments when you start to miss the usefulness of technology. An unusual bird lights down on your mast, and you wonder what species it is. Or you try to remember how to tie one of the knots you learned in Boy Scouts, and it drives you crazy because it won’t come back to you. You find yourself wishing that you had internet access from your boat.
Satellite internet has made this a real possibility. Even miles out into the ocean you can quickly connect. Sailors guide themselves by the stars above, and as long you can see the sky, you are in the line of sight of your satellite provider. The only possible drawbacks are that the latency means that you probably won’t want to use it for direct communication and videoconferencing, and the inherent susceptibility of satellites to bad weather means you shouldn’t look up advice on what to do in a storm once it’s already storming.
If you are accustomed to dial-up internet at home and you are concerned about adjusting to satellite internet broadband – well, your fears might be grounded. You will get so spoiled by the speed and quality that you’ll either never want to come ashore or you’ll wind up installing satellite access for your home computers as well! The point is, you certainly won’t be sacrificing any quality by using satellite rather than dial-up. A file that takes more than a minute to download using a 53k dial-up takes less than a second to download via satellite.
Internet can have some real and important advantages when you are on the water. Before long it may become just as essential to you as any of the other technological equipment you keep on board to help you operate your boat. You can look up navigational charts and plot your next routes. You can stay abreast of the latest weather reports. And – why not – you can even research the art of mixing the perfect martini to sip on while you enjoy the wind and the waves. The uses are as vast and varied as the web itself.
The mobility of your internet boat system includes the mobility to take it on or off your boat. If your boat spends long periods alone in a marina, you should be wary of leaving too much expensive equipment aboard. But a mobile satellite internet system is like carrying a small suitcase. Wherever your wanderlust may take you, you can go there connected to the world wide web.
Sometimes we just want to get away from it all and escape to the wild waters, but you don’t have to leave technology behind to do so. Stay connected throughout the seven seas using satellite internet.

When M?tley Cr?e was at the height of its fame, there wasn’t any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn’t do. He spent days — sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers — in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki’s journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions.
Here, Nikki shares those diary entries — some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre — and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more.

Find Discount Green Toys My First Stacker Another win for Green ToysThis is a great stacker. I love that there is no center pole. I bought a Melissa & Doug stacker and my (then) 11 mo old daughter immediately went for the center post…and I could see what was going to happen, and so now she has a set of wooden rings, with nothing to stack them on, since I confiscated the center post. Enter the Green Toys stacker, which has no center post and has a great design. For what it’s worth, mine is not exactly like the picture. Our bottom “sombrero” is yellow, and our top is green.
