Why do you need a fiber identifier and what can it do for you?

If you have ever seen a telephone company technician working on the phone jump box outside your house, you should have noticed a special handheld phone like instrument. The technician uses it to identify the incoming telephone wires by tapping onto the wires and listening for a tone. Once he finds the correct wire, he connects the wire into your house.

During fiber optic network installation, maintenance, or restoration, it is also often necessary to identify a specific fiber without disrupting live service. This battery powered instrument looks like a long handheld bar and is called fiber identifier or live fiber identifier.

How does it work?

There is a slot on the top of a fiber optic identifier. The fiber under test is inserted into the slot, then the fiber identifier performs a macro-bend on the fiber. The macro-bend makes some light leak out from the fiber and the optical sensor detects it. The detector can detect both the presence of light and the direction of light.

A fiber optic identifier can detect “no signal”, “tone” or “traffic” and it also indicates the traffic direction.

The optical signal loss induced by this technique is so small, usually at 1dB level, that it doesn’t cause any trouble on the live traffic.

What kind of fiber cables does it support?

Fiber optic identifiers can detect 250um bare fibers, 900um tight buffered fibers, 2.0mm fiber cables, 3.0mm fiber cables, bare fiber ribbons and jacketed fiber ribbons.

Most fiber identifiers need to change a head adapter in order to support all these kinds of fibers and cables. While some other models are cleverly designed and they don’t need to change the head adapter at all. Some models only support single mode fibers and others can support both single mode and multimode fibers.

What is relative power measurement

Most high end fiber optic identifiers are equipped with a LCD display which can display the optical power detected. However, this power measurement cannot be used as a accurate absolute power measurement of the optical signal due to inconsistencies in fiber optic cables and the impact of user technique on the measurements.

But this power measurement can be used to compare power levels on different fiber links which have same type of fiber optic cable. This relative power measurement has a lot of applications as described below.

1. Identification of fibers

The relative power reading can be used to aid in the identification of a live optical fiber.There are several tests that can be performed to isolate the desired fiber cable from a group of fibers without taking down the link(s). Three methods that could be used include comparing relative power, inducing macrobends, and varying the optical power of the source. No single method is best or necessarily definitive. Using one or a combination of these methods may be needed to isolate the fiber.

2. Identification of high loss points

Fiber optic identifier’s relative power measurement capability can be used to identify high loss point(s) in a length of fiber. By taking relative power measurements along a section of optical fiber that is suspected of having a high loss point such as a fracture or tight bend, the change in relative power point to point can be noted. If a sudden drop or increase in relative power between two points is noted, a high loss point probably exists between the two points. The user can then narrow in on the point by taking further measurements between the two points.

3. Verify optical splices and connectors

Fiber optic identifier can be used to verify fiber optic connectors and splices. This test must be performed on a lit optical fiber. The optical fiber can be carrying a signal or be illuminated using an optical test source. Attach fiber identifier to one side of the optical connector/splice. Read and record the relative optical power. Repeat the measurement on the second side of the connector/splice. Take the difference between the reading on the second side and the first side. The difference should be roughly equal to the optical attenuation of the optical connector/splice. The measurement can be taken several times and averaged to improve accuracy. If the optical fiber identifier indicates high loss, the connector/slice may be defective.

When you have to choose between two processes in this case ‘screen printing’ or ‘embroidery’ it can be very difficult so hopefully the following information will help.

Screen Printing & Embroidery are mainly used for promotional clothing so choosing the best process to promote your company is a very important decision. They both have their advantages and disadvantages but either choose has a massive impact on potential customers.

The process of screen printing

There are many factors when it comes to screen printing, the artwork, the screens and the machines your t-shirts are printed on. Firstly we have to produce the artwork which is created in Adobe Illustrator and is known as Vector, this is then printed onto film which gets exposed on the light table. Screens are made up of many types of meshes from a 43 which allows a heavier deposit of ink to a 120 which puts a minimum deposit of ink down for finer detailed designs, emulsion is placed onto these meshes and then the film placed on top. These are both placed under the exposure unit to expose. The film blocks the light allowing the surrounding emulsion to cure whilst the covered area breaks down, the screen is then rinsed and ready for print.

Depending on your design this process can be done 1-12 times to produce screens for an individual job so setting up a job can be very time consuming. The screens are spun automatically around the machine in sequence whilst the squeegee pulls the ink across the screen depositing the ink onto the shirt. All colours are put down wet on wet unless we have dark shirts where a flash cure unit is used to dry the base before proceeding to the next colour. Once all the colours are completed the shirt is then taken off and placed through the dryer and there you have it a printed t-shirt.

The process of embroidery

Embroidery consists of two processes firstly you need your design digitised using embroidery software (Wilcom) this coverts the artwork into a format the machines can recognise and replicate the design into stitches onto your garments, Once completed this can be loaded into an embroidery machine (SWF) ready for sewing.

The time for processing the design can take 10 minutes to run; most manufactures machines have eight heads which enables multiple production runs.

The machine has a start point so wherever the designer has located this depends on how the image was created, most images are produced in layers and work backwards depending on the garment type. Each element is stitched with its specified colour which is taken from the industries standard (Madeira) threads with a maximum of 12 colours per head.

Whilst we have discussed the processes we haven’t spoken about the advantages and disadvantages of screen printing and embroidery.

The major advantage between them both is speed, whilst screen printing has alot of stages to produce the screen once complete the process is minimal with some companies producing around 20,000 t-shirts a day. Embroideries downfall is the digitising, most designs are small but when you have an intricate design this can take hours to digitise and when complete only a maximum of 8 designs can be produced at one time.

Last ability is a major issue as screen printing is the choice when comparing with digital transfers but when it comes to embroidery this wins hands down. Screen Printing is produced by using inks so after time and many washes the inks start to deteriorate, this is alot slower than transfers but faster than embroidery threads losing their colour. Embroidery is the perfect choice for corporate wear as these can be washed at high temperatures and multiple times.

Cost effectiveness is the most important issue for most people as applying these techniques to clothing isn’t cheap. The majority of the cost comes down to the design, if you have a small left breast 1 colour design this will be roughly the same cost, if you look at the other end of the scale and the design is large with multiple colours, screens become very expensive and programmes can have thousands of stitches. These two basically level out but setups on Print can cost 240 pounds and embroidery programmes around 120 pounds.

My personal opinion on this topic is that screen printing achieves more effectiveness for promotional clothing when trying to sell a product and embroidery suits corporate clothing but overall the both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Forsaken Archer 3v3 Guide

The Forsaken Archer is a flexible hero that can fill the role of a carry and a ganker. At the moment, the Forsaken Archer is my favorite hero. She can dish out heavy single target damage with a root and shoot combo, she can decimate entire teams with a well placed ultimate, and she can escape many dire situations with her high run speed and root. Please note that this guide is intended for 3 versus 3 games or smaller.

Starting Items

I’ve always been one to buy a healing potion or runes of the blight. With the Forsaken Archer I have skipped those lately and went straight for Ghost Marchers. This choice can pay off or hurt you later in the game. If you know you’re laning against a melee hero you can get away with it every time. If you’re going against a ranged hero you might consider buying healing items instead of ghost marchers. You can purchase a bottle and a winged courier at the start of the game. This lets you heal and spam your root ability throughout the whole game.

Early Laning

The first few levels are the weakest. The Forsaken archer doesn’t hit hard and you don’t have any skeletal minions. Be cautious. When you are level two with 2 points in your root and 2 points in skeletal minions you become a serious threat. Start hitting the enemy hero now. Don’t chase him at all. Just shoot him when he gets close. When the enemy hero is at approximately 75% life hit him with your root ability and attack. If you have 4 skeletons helping you, it’s a guaranteed kill. This is the tactic you use to kill enemy heroes.

Mid Game

My first item I purchase after ghost marchers is the thunder claw. The thunder claw increases your damage and has the chance to cast chain lightning. This will increase the rate at which you earn gold. Next you want to purchase any one of the life steal items. The next item to purchase is Slash. This makes you hit harder and increases the rate at which you fire arrows. After you purchase Slash you want to upgrade it to a Geomancer’s Bane. It’s a minor upgrade in damage as a raw stat, but when you activate the item, it spawns 2 illusions of yourself which in turn cause damage. It also increases your movement speed.

Late Game

Most games don’t make it this far. With just those items listed above you should be able to dominate the game. In the rare occasion in which the game lasts this long, purchase a wingbow or a shied breaker. These 2 items will increase your killing power!

You can turn the tide of team fights by a well placed root and ultimate combo. If you can manage to have your ultimate hit at least 2 of the opposing team, your ultimate will take them both under half. If you hit their whole team with the combo, all of them will be below half life and easy to clean up with the rest of your team.

I have seen lousy products before, but this one beats them by a mile. I can live with so-so accuracy, speed, but trying to transfer scanned text to PC is like a trying to communicate with a lost satellite in the space. I cannot believe that in this age and time, where you would take for granted connecting any electronic device to PC, that a product like this would actually come to market. I must have spent over 10 hours to make this work. For my use, the scanning is not bad, actually better for what I had paid for, which is why gets a one star, but PC interface for the device seem more like an after thought.

It works most of the time, sometimes scanning too fast messes things up, haven’t been able to test the Infra Red caperbilities yet, but i assume they work.
Typing is proberbly much faster, as scanning can take a while, unless of course you cannot type in a tight space.
All in all it’s ok, fairly basic but it depends on what you need it for.
I think it works best for lots of small bits of info, as opposed to large sections of text.

This is your beginners guide for Heroes of Newerth. Please remember as you play that the game has a steep learning curve, meaning that it will take time for you to play the game well. What makes this game really difficult for new players to get into is the fact that there is no single player mode. You can only play online versus other players who already know the ins and outs of the game. My first 20 matches were horrible. I wasn’t having fun, everyone was yelling at me, and I had no idea what I was doing. As I learned more about the game I began to be the best player on my team and often was the one carrying us to victory.

The first thing you need to know is that you should join games with new players as well. Scan the game list for titles that say new players only. When you join the game and are in the lobby check everyone’s stats. Some people like to join “noob” games just to beat up on everyone. You can look at their stats by right clicking on their name and going to the stats button. Some key stats to look at are; kills, deaths, and average creep kills. If you see someone with significantly more kills than deaths, it’s a sign saying that player is not new to the game. If you see the average creep kills above 100 that also tells you that the player is not new.

Once the game has started you will be in your base. There is a shop nearby. Open it up and become familiar with the items. You only have 1 minute before the action starts though, so be fast. I suggest you make a practice game first and start the game with no one else but you. Then you can browse all the items in the store without messing up a game. Important items to buy are; boots, healing supplies, and then weapons/armor. Generally you will want something that will heal you so you can stay out of your base gaining levels. The more time you run back to your base, the less time you spend leveling up and earning gold.

Now that you’re in a lane fighting creeps and enemy heroes there are some things you should do. First of all, DO NOT DIE. Each death hurts your team and makes their team stronger. Stay behind your creeps. Do not auto attack enemy creeps. This will push your lane closer to their base which will leave you open to being killed by enemy heroes. You want to get the last hit on friendly and enemy creeps. A last hit on a creep will result in gold for you. A last hit on a friendly creep will render less experience for enemy heroes.

Remember that this game takes time to learn. You’re first 25 games will be awful. You will die a lot and probably lose the majority of them. Stick with it and keep learning. Once you know how to play the game well it becomes a very entertaining game.
