Independent films sometimes do better than their big-budget blockbuster counterparts. The mere fact that the studio is not controlling the movie and the director is given a free rein is why top independent films have been churned out for the last couple of years. On that note, below is a list of the best independent films of all times and why you should watch them before you die.
1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
This movie is a brilliant comedy by the famous British comedy group that satires most of the Middle Ages. King Arthur and his knights go on a trip to find the Holy Grail after being ordered so by a grumpy-looking God. Along the way, they meet interesting characters, including witches and killer rabbits.
Why you should watch it: It’s done by the premier British comedy group who has made other top independent films such as ‘Monty Python’s Life of Brian’ and ‘And Now for Something Completely Different’. Also the characters have names such as Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. With such a winning formula, you can be sure it’ll tickle your funny bone.
2) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Some say this is the best independent film made in the 20th century. It’s a classic American film based on a classic American novel. It follows the story of Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck in his most memorable role) as he defends a black man from being falsely charged with raping a white woman, all seen from the eyes of Scout (Mary Badham), a six-year old tomboy.
Why you should watch it: It was listed as AFI’s greatest movie of all times list and the best courtroom movie ever.
3) Se7en (1995)
This thriller follows the exploits of a deranged serial killer (played wonderfully by Kevin Spacey) who sees himself as doing God’s work by choosing victims who embodied the seven deadly sins. Hot on his trail is the perfect pairing of Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt), who somehow find themselves tangled in the killer’s web.
Why you should watch it: This BAFTA nominated independent film showcases superb acting and storyline. Any gore movie fan should be able to appreciate the ways the victims were killed based on their sins.
4) The Usual Suspects (1995)
Another crime thriller, this one is made Bryan Singer in what many see as his best work. This top independent film tells the story of 5 hijackers who exacts revenge on the police after being wrongfully accused. Along the way, they find out about Keyser Soze, a mysterious mastermind, who had ensnared these 5 men into blowing up a boat which killed all but one.
Why you should watch it: Brilliant story line and cinematography. This movie was also told in flashbacks, keeping the audience guessing about the identity of Keyser Soze.
5) Pulp Fiction (1994)
This Quentin Tarantino film has brought a new way in story-telling in the 90s. It follows a day of the life of two hit men, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) as they carry out an assignment for their boss. The story also alternates between them and Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), a struggling boxer who just fought his last fight.
Why you should watch it: The best independent film of 1994 will hook you with its bizarre and somewhat funny events that occur to its characters. Not forgetting to mention, the unique storyline and Tarantino’s way of telling it will certainly make this movie a must-see.

Van Rompuy: ‘Philosophy is my core business, besides theology’
www.EurActiv.com journalist Georgi Gotev on Friday asked the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council about the cost of the compromise that made possible an agreement to change the Lisbon Treaty. The change, considered small but significant, will enable EU member states to create a permanent safety mechanism for troubled countries in the eurozone.
Family Reunion Invitations

Image : http://www.flickr.com
A family reunion is an event that everyone looks forward to; it is meant to spice up your life and make a good year even better, so there is no reason to have a boring family reunion. It should be a lot of fun. The first thing to consider when planning a family reunion is invitations. A good invitation can mean the difference between a large turnout and a small one. You can either buy them readymade, or you can invent them. Be creative; design your own family reunion invitations or buy them from a stationery shop nearby. Invitations should be sent at least 2-3 months before the reunion. While designing your own invitations, be innovative.
The invitation should reflect the spirit of the reunion. For example, design a customized t-shirt, with all the details about the reunion and a personalized message. It can also include a picture describing the place you have selected for the reunion, enclosing a map, if necessary. If you have selected a beach for the reunion, then a picture of a beach can be printed on the front and back of the t-shirt. You can also include a picture of a couple of common ancestors. This would serve as a reminder of what everyone has in common
Invitations can also be sent on behalf of the newest baby in the family, as an invitation or a request to all to come and meet the newly born. So plan properly and celebrate a family reunion of a lifetime.

AND: The Gathered and Scattered Church (Exponential Series)
AND: The Gathered and Scattered Church (Exponential Series) AND, by Hugh Halter and Matt Smay, asks and provides an answer for one of the most important questions for church leaders today: What is happening to the church in America? By all appearances, it looks like we are ‘doing’ church better than we ever have. In the past thirty years the number of mega-churches has increased from under 100 to over 7,500. In the past ten years the number of multi-site churches has increased from under 100 to over 2,000. By the numbers, these church movements enjoy the national platform, the national voice, and the resources to profoundly impact the Kingdom. In spite of the rapid growth of these prevailing church movements, why is the Western church still in massive decline? Numerous books have been written documenting the flight of members from the institutional church. This is not another book about how to do church better or how to just get people back into the pews. AND helps you—whether you are a mega-church, traditional, contemporary, or organic church leader—focus on the vast majority of unchurched Christians and non-believers who are not moving toward any form of church. You will learn how to value existing church forms—attracting people to a physical church and releasing people into hands-on ministry … bringing together the very best of the attractional and missional models for church ministry. AND will equip you and all church leaders to value existing church forms while catalyzing a missional movement of incarnational people into the world for Jesus Christ. AND is the second book in the Exponential Series—a partnership between Exponential Network, Leadership Network, and Zondervan featuring several signature books each year to tell the reproducing church story, celebrate the diversity of models and approaches God is using to reproduce healthy congregations, and highlight the innovative practices of healthy reproducing churches. Don’t wait Access 2007 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) Access 2007 for DummiesI have used Microsoft Access at home for about 10 years, but never fully utilized most of it’s powerful features, because I didn’t take the time to really study any of the manuals and guides that were available. Prior to Access, my experience with data base applications was limited to proprietary programs of the company I worked for. Then I talked to someone about Access 2007 for Dummies, and decided to try it. I have only been using it for about 2 months and already I am pleased with my decision. The way it is written has allowed me to quickly identify some things I have always wanted to do with the program, as well … read more.

Cheapest Hotel California DVD-A of ‘Hotel California’ worth gettingIf you were around in the late 70′s and were within earshot of rock and pop radio, you heard the Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ and if you’ve listened to classic rock radio since then and till today, you are familiar with this album many times over, possibly even sick of it (as you might be with Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’, Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and most of Led Zeppelin), as you might be sick of Eagles music in general. However, just this Christmas day, I was with family, and the household happened to have a superb DVD/Dolby surround setup and the man of the house received the DVD-A of ‘Hotel California’ as … read more.
The Genetic Strand: Exploring a Family History Through DNA
The Genetic Strand: Exploring a Family History Through DNA
The Genetic Strand: Exploring a Family History Through DNA The Genetic Strand is the story of a writer’s investigation, using DNA science, into the tale of his family’s origins. National Book Award winner Edward Ball has turned his probing gaze on the microcosm of the human genome, and not just any human genome — that of his slave-holding ancestors. What is the legacy of such a family history, and can DNA say something about it?
In 2000, after a decade in New York City, Ball bought a house in Charleston, South Carolina, home to his father’s family for generations, and furnished it with heirloom pieces from his relatives. In one old desk he was startled to discover a secret drawer, sealed perhaps since the Civil War, in which someone had hidden a trove of family hair, with each lock of hair labeled and dated. The strange find propelled him to investigate: what might DNA science reveal about the people — Ball’s family members, long dead — to whom the hair had belonged? Did the hair come from white relatives, as family tradition insisted? How can genetic tests explain personal identity?
Part crime-scene investigation, part genealogical romp, The Genetic Strand is a personal odyssey into DNA and family history. The story takes the reader into forensics labs where technicians screen remains, using genetics breakthroughs like DNA fingerprinting, and into rooms where fathers nervously await paternity test results. It also summons the writer¹s entertaining and idiosyncratic family, such as Ball¹s antebellum predecessor, Aunt Betsy, who published nutty books on good Southern society; Kate Fuller, the enigmatic ancestor who may have introduced African genes into the Ball family pool; and the author¹s first cousin Catherine, very much alive, who donates a cheek swab from a mouth more attuned to sweet iced tea than DNA sampling.
Writing gracefully but pacing his story like an old-fashioned whodunit, Edward Ball tracks genes shared across generations, adding suspense and personal meaning to what the scientists and Nobel laureates tell us. A beguiling DNA tale, The Genetic Strand reaches toward a new form of writing‹the genetic memoir.
