New Cottage Home This delightful book is chock full of carefully planned cottage designs, and it clearly illustrates how skilled and caring architects can combine ordinary materials and proven techniques to create simple yet elegant houses that are lovely to behold and a source of great pride and enjoyment to their owners. Lovely pictures. It was a little disappointing because I thought the ideas are those I have seen many times before in magazines. Still it is a nice book if you are new to country decorating.
I love just about everything in this book, though I will admit there are a few pictures I’m just not loving the colors they used in the rooms. But, what I do like in this book very much outweighs the rooms I don’t love. I very much recommend this book, because when they get it right, they really get it right. It is full of lots of pictures of beautiful rooms and only a few that are so so. :

A Very Modest Cottage

A Very Modest Cottage I’m obsessed with this book! – Anybook –
It’s hard not to fall in love with this little cottage the owners lovingly relocate and refurbish!
The book itself is small and portable–perfect to enjoy over a leisurely weekend by the lake. If you dream of a cabin by the lapping waters, even if they are just in your imagination, this is the book for you.
I read the book in about an hour, and am somewhat disappointed. The cottage is cute and the history is interesting. Transporting the cottage and restoring it kept my attention. The author shopped at flea markets, was involved in some do-it-yourself restoration projects and created a plan to decorate and landscape the cottage — all things that interest me and are enjoyable to read about. The photographs are illuminating reflecting the project from beginning to end. Perhaps the problem is that nothing is explored in depth – each aspect of the project seems designed for a series of magazine articles rather than a book where the author has more time and space to fully explore a subject. I have questions that remain unanswered, some because they were only briefly touched on and some because they were never addressed.

Also, given the state of the economy and a trend to live more modestly to minimize our carbon footprint, a reasonable expectation is that the end result of the time, effort and money invested be a structure someone could actually live in. That would entail, at the least, plumbing. Obviously, it is an honorable task to restore a 1920′s tourist cottage and record its history, just not what I expected.

The book is carefully crafted, and given the inclusion of receipts and photos from inception, a project always intended to be in print. It isn’t actually a coffee table book or a thorough do-it-yourself restoration blueprint. The book is beautifully packaged, and although I am not completely satisfied, it is always good to remind people that there is value in the past and it is often a better choice to restore rather than destroy. :
