Date stamps are mechanical devices used to imprint date on large bunches of documents, like notices calling meetings, stock certificates dispatch, or acknowledgement of receipt of tax filings. The dates relevant to such activities are very important as there are legal stipulations relating to them. Accordingly, the inwards and outwards departments of all companies and government agencies have an inbuilt procedure for affixing date on the documents being received or dispatched by them.

Rubber date stamps are the most commonly used date stamps. These stamps have a wooden handle, which is attached to a support pulley system on which 6 to 8 flat rubber bands are loaded. There are engravings on these rubber bands. In traditional rubber date stamps, single digits from 0 to 9 are carved in such a way that combinations of numbers on these bands represent month, date and year. By rotating the bands to obtain required numbers, the exact date is arrived. This date is tested on a waste paper by tapping the bossing on inkpad, and imprinting it. This is necessary because embossed numbers do not appear like normal numbers. After confirmation, the required date is affixed on the entire lot of documents, almost mechanically. Manual implementation of such a procedure would be time consuming, laborious, and error prone.

Rubber date stamps are inexpensive. They can be used to represent dates in multiple formats, i.e., year, month, and date format, month, year and date format, or year, date and month format. They can also be used with different color inks depending on requirements. Of recent, rubber date stamps are being designed to hold the dies of additional words like “Confidential,” “Copy,” “Draft,” etc. These words help in organizing the documents more efficiently. For coloring stamps after you have applied them to paper you can use items such as colored pens, watercolor pencils, and even just normal everyday pencils. Ensure that you wait for the ink to dry before you start coloring it in to reduce the chance of any smudging or ink run. It is also a good idea to do a few tests on a stamp to see if the pens or pencils you are going to use will make the ink run.

One of my favorite scrapbooking storage ideas is using a cart with several drawers on wheels. This allows me to move around the house, as I don’t always like to work in the same place. On top of that, when I am finished, I can roll it away into the closet which makes for easy cleanup.

I adore rubber stamps and have a lot of them. Sometimes I like to stop and look at each one. I finally decided one day, that since I adore them so much that I would find small shelves and display them on the wall. I have grouped my stamps into themes, making it easy for me to find what I need. And I absolutely love the way they look on display.

Spinning Creativity

For the tools I use most often, like scissors, glue sticks, pencils, paint brushes and so on, I use a lazy Susan. I keep it within reach, and whenever I need something, I take it for a spin. This is the easiest most assessable solution that I have come up with for the tools I use most often.

The idea when coming up with scrapbooking storage solutions, is to have a system that will keep the clutter away, and make for the most possible easy access to your supplies. Keeping your scrapbooking work area clean will allow your mind to be clear and more creative.

While I enjoyed the creative ideas in this book, this is NOT the book for the beginning stamper. This is the first book I purchased. At that time, I didn’t know the difference between dye-based inks and pigment inks and where/how to use each. I didn’t know how to do backgrounds. Essentially, I was beginning the craft, and I needed very basic to intermediate information. This book glosses over much of the vital basic information needed by beginning stampers.

The book’s saving grace is its creative aspect. Each of the projects was accompanied by a very detailed description of the materials and techniques used for completing the project, with step-by-step instructions and color photographs. The book helped me develop my own creativity by providing me with an understanding of how each technique (within the project) affected the project’s outcome.

Now that I have passed the novice level, I greatly enjoy Grace’s creative ideas. I’d call this the “Almost Complete Guide to Rubber Stamping.” Hopefully, in the next edition, we’ll get something that does cover all the bases–in DETAIL.

Throughout the year, we see advertisements for children’s toys. These advertisements are on television, on the radio and in print, both in magazines and in the newspaper.

Of course the amount and intensity of these ads is multiplied the last few months of each year. Our experience has often been that many toys are just fads. They are promoted in a way that children are just begging to receive them, and then once received, they are often discarded after just a few uses.

Over they years, I have often opted for toys that encourage creativity or thinking. For example, we’ve always owned word games. We’ve owned Scrabble, Boggle and Word Yahtzee, both the adult versions and the children’s versions. These games have helped my children develop a love of words. My older daughter can not be beat at Boggle. I laugh that no one will play Boggle with her, as no one can win against her.

When my kids were young we owned blocks, Duplos and Lego. Building and creating are wonderful activities for children. My kids created all types of structures. They built homes for their dolls. They would follow patterns and build robot type figures and they would just create made up structures with no real definition. They loved building and creating. When they were old enough we bought the iron on bead designs and again they would create and create. They made magnets and bookmarks galore.

Crossword puzzle books, logic puzzle books and word find books have also always been very popular in our home. Of course these types of books are for older kids, not the under 5 group. We also always bought many workbooks, which both of my kids loved to sit and work on. Under 5, we bought a lot of shapes and counting games. Both of my kids loved Candy Land. They had to match their color cards to the space on the board. They could play this for hours upon hours. We also loved the game Sorry. Reading numbers and counting spaces was fun when they were young.

Over the years we have purchased hundreds of reading books. We actually discovered used book stores when the kids were young because we just couldn’t keep them in books. As the kids learned to read, they went through every book the library had that kids could read themselves. They read everything we had bought them and so we began visiting the used book store. Any gift giving holiday the kids knew they could expect at least a couple of books.

My final suggestion is an assortment of age appropriate art supplies. You can buy crayons, markers and paints. As my kids got older they also began loving rubber stamps. They loved making their own cards and wrapping paper with rubber stamps.

We almost always skipped the newest advertised fad and instead chose the educational and creative toys on the market.

Affixing receipt and dispatch dates on documents is a standard procedure in government departments and corporate offices. These dates are generally referred to as some legal procedure applicable to these departments and firms. Failure to produce evidence related to these dates entails penalties and legal action. Therefore, these organizations take utmost care to affix dates on their records and correspondence. Date stamps are mechanical devices used for imprinting such dates.

Traditional date stamps require inkpads. They are practically useless without such additional kit. A sleeker device has recently been developed, which has inbuilt self-inking mechanism. These self-inking date stamps are generally made of plastics or metals, unlike traditional date stamps, which are made of wood. There is a small replaceable inkpad within these self-inking date stamps. When the device is not being used, the date stamp die rests on the inbuilt inkpad that moves aside by a spring mechanism, when pressed. A plastic cover is also provided to prevent drying of ink.

The mechanism for changing dates in self-ink stamp pads is similar to rubber date stamps. There are six to eight flat rubber bands with single digit numbers, i.e., 0 to 9, carved on them. These bands are loaded on separate cylinders, which can be rotated. A combination of numbers on these bands gives the required date, month, and year. Such mechanism allows representation of multiple formats of date, i.e., year, month and date, or date, month and year.

Other die pieces like “Confidential”, “Faxed”, etc., are also available with self-inking date stamps. These additional words and phrases help in tracing and organizing the documents.
