Going back to school after a summer of fun, without schedules and homework, can be a rough time in your child‘s life. In addition to the nervousness caused by wondering whether or not he will like his new teacher and classes, there are the challenges of daily schedules filled with activities and reestablishing study habits. Here are some ideas to make the transition go more smoothly.

“Back to School” shopping. Develop a “Back to School” shopping list with your child. Have them write out the list. You may wish to include clothing items or a computer along with school supplies. Most schools have school supply lists available for each classroom. The lists are often in the local stores or you can pick up a copy at the school. Some states offer a few “tax free” days specifically for school supplies. If your area does so, you will want to time your shopping trip to take advantage of the savings. Have your child go with you to do “Back to School” shopping. Have your child read from the list and then check off each item as it is added to your cart.

Set back the clock. Usually summer schedules are more relaxed than school schedules. Maybe you permit your child to stay up later and sleep later during the summer. If so, start to adjust their schedule back to school times at least a week prior to the beginning of school. Bedtime can be set a half an hour earlier every couple of days until the schedule is back to school bedtimes. Wake-up time can also be adjusted. Sleep is very important to growing children. Most growth happens during sleep. Experts recommend children sleep 9 to 12 hours a night. If your child is having trouble adjusting to the sleep schedule, make sure there is a bedtime routine to follow (bathe, brush teeth, use the restroom, change to pajamas, bedtime story, lights out). A small glass of warm milk is often just the thing for helping a child drift off to sleep.

Homework already! Bookstores and online book vendors have workbooks available which help prepare your child for the grade they will be starting. Have your child work through one or more of these workbooks just to get them back into the mode of doing homework. It also gives him a chance to practice the highly perishable skills he spent so much time learning last year. In the end, your child will feel better prepared when he walks into the classroom and, as a result, he is more likely to be successful.

Decorate and embellish. As a craft project, let your child decorate his school notebooks. Have stickers, markers, colorful paper, crayons, and other craft items available. Encourage your child to personalize their school supplies. Not only will your child enjoy the process and create something they like to look at, they will also be able to easily spot their items.

Set the schedule. In the final week prior to the start of school, discuss schedules with your child. Have him write out a daily schedule and post it in his room. Be sure to include wake-up and bedtimes, study time, meal times, hygiene times, leave the house for school time, and extracurricular activity times.

Make the transition between summer vacation and school easier for everyone.

It is possible to get creative without having to spend large sums of money. You’re probably wondering how this is possible and, then again, you may know a few tricks and you’re simply looking for a few more. Do you have old magazines in your home? If you do, then you have the epitome of cheap craft supplies. You can use letters of different sizes and colors to make sayings and quotes. What you get is a very retro feel that is 100% original. You can create collages or you can use the letters to create other types of crafts. If you are looking for a particular graphic, you can go online and find the perfect graphics. You can find them and print them out with your printer, but you may not get the same quality. While you’re at it, you might want to invest in some glitter glue since it adds a really nice touch to some projects. You can never have too much glitter and other cute and pretty items around.

If you’re into making models, then you will also need modeling clay. Don’t go to your local craft supply store unless they sell at discounted prices. Now don’t say, “I know my store sells cheap supplies.” Always check the internet to see how cheap you can really buy your craft supplies for. This rings very true for modeling clay because you don’t have to spend a lot of money on it.

Just be sure to research prices for your supplies before buying. We live in a time where we need to use every spare cent we have to put gas in our cars, but we don’t want our hobbies to suffer. Using the internet to find the best deals will work to your advantage in many ways.

Clay

1c. Cornstarch

2c. Salt Enough Water to Make a Thick Paste.

Stir while cooking, and cook until stiff. Allow this to cool, and cover with a damp cloth until ready to use. Coloring may be added before cooking or when molded; let dry, then paint with water color.

–HOW TO CARE FOR CLAY:– Clay can always be broken up, dampened, and used again – even afterit has been painted. When it has been used, but has not been allowed to become hard, poke holes in the clay with your finger or with a pencil, fill these with water (to restore the original dampness) and place in an airtight crock or in a galvanized pail with a tight cover. A damp cloth placed over the clay will help to keep it moist until the next time.

Chocolate Finger Paint

1 (4oz.) pkg. Instant Chocolate Pudding and Pie Filling

2c. Cold Milk.

Put pudding mix and milk in a medium size bow. Beat with electric mixer at low speed for two minutes. Let set until it thickens. Finger paint on white construction paper and let dry for several hours. Now it’s ready to hang up.

Silly Putty

1c. Elmer’s glue

2 1/2c. Liquid Starch Food Coloring.

In a medium bowl, mix glue and one cup of the starch together. Add a few drops of food coloring, if you wish. Cover bowl, and let it stand overnight. The next day slowly stir in with a spoon 1 to 1/2 cups of the starch until a big blob forms. Pour off extra starch. Store in an air tight container.

Soap Crayons

One ice cube tray Liquid food color

2 tbsp. hot water for each crayon

1 c. soap flakes

Small bowl

Spoon

For each color, put two tablespoons of hot water and one cup of soap flakes into a bowl. Add as many drops of food color to the mixture as you wish. Stir the soap mixture until it thickens. This takes time, so be patient! Press spoonfuls of the first color of soap into the sections of the ice tray. Mix enough soap in the other colors to fill the ice tray, following the above directions again. Let the soap crayons dry for one or two days. Gently bang the ice tray to loosen the crayons. Pack them in a box for gift-giving. Great for birthday presents or holidays.

Homemade Playdough

2c. Flour

1c. Salt

1/4c. Salad Oil

3/4 – 1c. Water

Few drops of food coloring of your choice

Mix Flour, salt and oil. Then add food coloring to the water. Finally add water to flour, salt and oil. Knead until it no longer sticks to your hands. Baggies may be used to store playdough in so it doesn’t have to be divided every time it is used. Seal with plastic tie strings or coffee cans. If dough gets too hard or dries out, add more water. If dough gets too oil, add flour.

Easy Splash Place

Cut a rubber tire in half. You will have two containers now for children to play in with water. Add water toys.

Painted Toast

White Bread

Milk

Food Colors

Small Clean Brushes

Paper Cups

Toaster

Divide small amounts of milk into paper cups and add a different color to each. Using the clean brushes, let the children paint on their bread. Teach them to paint gently so they don’t tear the bread. Do not let them get the bread too wet. Let them drop into toaster and see what happens when it pops up!

Squeeze Bottle Paint

2c. White Glue

1/2c. Dry Plaster of Paris

1c. Powdered Tempra

Mix together and add enough water to make consistency of toothpaste. Make consistency of toothpaste. Put into squeeze bottle. Use black squeeze paint to make outlines for “stained glass” effect. When dry, use water colors or markers to fill in when dry. Use white to make “spider web” pictures. Dry flat overnight.

Big Beautiful Bubbles

1c. Water

2tbsp. Liquid Detergent

1tbsp. Glycerine

1/2tsp. Sugar

Mix all ingredients. Let stand overnight in covered container. Stir. Blow big beautiful bubbles. HINTS: Joy dish detergent works well. Glycerine can be purchased in the cake decorating departments.

Cinnamon Ornaments

3/4 to 1c. Applesauce

12 oz. Bottle of Ground Cinnamon

Cookie Cutters

Mix applesauce and cinnamon to make stiff dough. Roll to 1/2 inch on cinnamon to prevent sticking. Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Make hole for hanging and place on cookie tray to dry for several days. Turn occasionally.

It only takes imagination on the children and parent’s part to make a fun day with minimal money spent. You will enjoy the laughs, the smiles and the wonderful eagerness in your child‘s voice. Plan game and craft day at least a couple times a month.

When times get tough our hobbies are generally first to suffer the cutbacks. The list below has just a few ideas to help you save money on craft supplies and you may also find yourself a new creative burst by trying them. Crafts don’t always have to be so expensive and it is fun to improvise.

Paper and card

Newspaper offcuts: A great place to get plain paper, particularly for kids crafts and drawing is a newspaper office. Our local newspaper has always had huge rolls of plain white paper available for around $10 – $15, that is a roll that is over a metre wide and 30cm in diameter. I believe it was over 100 metres of paper, well my daughter has had the same roll for over 5 years. It isn’t great quality but it has tons of uses like as a drop sheet for other projects, making patterns for sewing.

Scrapbooking paper and card: If you are finding the scrapbook stores too expensive try looking in newsagents, office supply stores and department stores for paper and card. They may not have the same range and quality but you may find something to help your supply of better paper last longer.

Op shops and flea markets

Fabric and wool: Second hand clothes found in opportunity shops and flea markets can often be a great source of fabric when you don’t need large amounts. Even when clothes are fairly old there are generally parts that are not faded or worn.

Used knitwear is great for small amounts of wool for wool crafts.

Leather: Look out for old handbags, belts and leather jackets for leather scraps and fittings.

Beading: Op-shops often have old jewelry, which can be reused for findings, beads and pendants.

Buttons, zips and buckles: All types of sewing notions can be found in opshops, the biggest consideration is will be able to be removed easily.

Bears and dolls: Bits and pieces for dolls and bears could be found in opshop toys.

Mosaic

Second hand stores and garage sales are often a great source of plates that can be broken for use in mosaics.

Nature

Mother Nature has an endless bounty of craft supplies for free. Plus you get fresh air and exercise while you are beach combing, walking or fossicking. Shells, sand, driftwood, seedpods, pebbles, leaves and grasses are but a few things that can be used in many crafts.

Wood

Sometimes small timber stores or hardware shops have a bin of offcuts that could fit many uses. Salvage yards and secondhand stores can be another source of wood and old furniture that may be able to be recycled too.

Making your own

Some of the things we use in crafts can be made instead of purchased. For example decent paper glue can be made with cornflour, beads can be made with salt dough and there are ways to make stencils and stamps yourself too.

Kids love crafts and there are so many paper flower crafts you can make with them. If you let the child chose what type of paper flower craft they want to make you will be absolutely amazed at their little imaginations!

Do not be surprised if they make paper flower craft alphabets or paper flower houses! Kids are so imaginative if only we had a small fraction of the imagination that a child has it would be fantastic. When it comes to kids and crafts they can and will create what an adult sees as the impossible!

Be sure to supply them with plenty of crepe paper, scissors that are age appropriate and clear drying glue and just watch them go. If you want you can provide them with a few helpful hints or guidance.

If you can make a house out of candy and gingerbread I bet a child can make a house out of paper flowers. For this project they will need a square box to shape and glue the flowers on to. They may even want to cut out a space for the windows and door. They can cover the “house” in crepe paper (paint) before they start making their flowers and attaching them. Smaller flowers will work best for this project.

How about a flower family? That would certainly go well with the house. You will need pipe cleaners for the body and flowers for the head you may also want to pick up some wiggly eyes, red dots for noses and a few beads for the mouths. I wonder what type of flower family they will create. Roses, carnations or maybe even daisies.

If they have gone as far as creating the flower family to go with the house why not let them make a neighborhood? This project will certainly make a rainy day go by quickly!

Children also enjoy making gifts for the people they love so if you have a few extra vases this is a great time to let them make a few simple centerpieces. Flower stationary is another great idea. Just leave the stems off the flowers and attach the flower to a corner of the paper.

Flower magnets that can be added to the collection on the refrigerator are also a lot of fun. You will need a role of magnet tape. Before the afternoon is over you may have a very colorful and flowery refrigerator.

Do not forget paper flower crafts make great gifts especially when made by little hands. They can make photo frames, flower collages, even flower necklaces (use tiny flowers for this project.) Cards are another great gift especially pop up ones. Who would not love a pop up flower card? Little trinket boxes with a flower top are a great craft projects if you do not have a lot of time.

If you run out of ideas for paper flower crafts you can make with the kids just ask them, I am sure they will have dozens of ideas!

Arts and crafts bring out the dormant creativity in children. You may have noticed that children who indulge in creating artful materials from a tender age are the ones who become noticed in school or friends circle. The joy in bringing out a new work or art can only be experienced. No words can describe it. The confidence levels of creative children also soar.

There is a wide variety of crafts and arts that a child can indulge, according to his ability and age. The inexpensive and otherwise useless articles lying in the garage or the attic can be put to use in these creative endeavors. The older members in the family and teachers should guide the child about safe and clean handling of the materials, but discouraging words or actions need to be cut out at all costs.

Different kinds of arts and craft exist. Balloon crafts, paper crafts, art works from straw or waste boxes, pebble, rock, twig, macaroni, egg shells and cartons, toilet paper, plaster of Paris, pine cones-anything can be put to use to create ingenious products or art.

The results can be phenomenal. I have seen children producing an entire farm house with all its animals, barns, fields and people with these materials. The more technically inclined produce spring toys and pop up toys using simple and drab things.

When it comes to Halloween costumes, we always decided to make our own because we felt it was foolish to spend $35 and up, for a costume that our child was only going to wear one time. Over the years, my sister-in-law and I have made numerous costumes for our children and I thought I would share a few simple ideas with you.

If you are concerned about safety, I recommend purchasing some reflective material patches at your local fabric and crafts store, and sew or glue them onto your child‘s costume. This safety measure will help car drivers to see them at night as they are crossing the street. I always recommend that a responsible adult accompany children on Trick or Treat night.

Here are the Halloween costume ideas we came up with over the years.

Lady Bug – You will need: red leotard, red tights, 4 sheets of black felt and fabric glue. Cut out some circles and ovals from the felt and glue onto the red leotard so that it looks like lady bug spots. To make antennae, purchase a black headband, 2 round 3″ diameter Styrofoam balls, 2 pencils, black acrylic paint and gorilla glue. Paint the Styrofoam balls and pencils black and let dry. Glue pencils to the center of the Styrofoam balls, let dry and then glue the pencils to the top of the head band.

Note: You could use the same concept above and do a bumble bee and substitute the red clothing items with yellow clothing items and make black felt bee-style stripes.

Construction Worker – You will need: denim blue jeans, white T-shirt, flannel shirt and a yellow plastic hard hat found at a discount toy store. You can borrow a man’s tool belt or purchase a canvas-style apron with pockets at a local craft store for a few dollars. If desired, visit your local dollar discount store and purchase a plastic tool set to stick into the pockets of the tool belt.

Golfer – You will need: khaki colored pants, polo-style shirt and a plaid golfers cap. You can purchase plastic golf clubs and balls at your local dollar discount store. We made our own golf bag by emptying out a large round cardboard tube and painting it with acrylic paints. Punch a hole in each side of the tube and attach twine for a carrying strap. You can fit 3-4 plastic golf clubs into the holder and have your child carry it over their shoulder.

Nurse – You will need: white skirt, shirt, tights and shoes which your child most likely already has in her closet. To add to that, purchase a child‘s size nurses cap at a costume store along with a plastic doctor’s kit at your local dollar discount store. We also accented the white shirt with a name badge and a red felt first-aid cross that we hand drew and safety pinned to the shirt.

Mummy – You will need: white clothing, white ski mask, white sneakers, several rolls of white first aid bandages and numerous safety pins. We cut the bandages into 12-24″ lengths and safety pinned them around the legs, arms and abdomen of the outfit. We chose to use fabric glue to attach them to the white ski mask. If you are making this costume for a small child, then I recommend using non-toxic fabric glue instead of the safety pins.

Black Spider – You will need: black jeans, black sweatshirt, 2 pairs of black little girls tights, 1 bag of fiberfill stuffing, black thread. You need to cut the panty portion off of the tights and just use the legs. Stuff each leg firmly with fiberfill and then sew the end shut with thread. Do this for a total of 4 spider legs. You will want to hand sew (or machine sew) the stuffed legs onto the sides of the black sweatshirt about 4-5″ below the sweatshirt arm. If desired, you can paint the child‘s face black or lime green with face paints.

Crayon – You will need: your choice of colored clothing, we selected orange to fit with the Halloween theme, along with several sheets of black felt, fabric glue and a black fabric paint. Grab one of your child‘s crayons and use it as an example on how you should cut out designs from your black felt. Attach those designs onto the clothing items so that it resembles a crayon. You can use the black fabric paint to paint on the crayon-makers name on the front of the shirt. To further fit with our theme, we machine sewn a triangular hat out of matching orange felt, so that ‘our’ little crayon had a pointy crayon top.

Break free of the winter doldrums with some hands-on crafting fun geared toward preschoolers. Rare is the child who does not delight in glue and paint, so snap on the smocks and get started. The four easy winter crafts below will keep preschoolers occupied and learning at the same time.

Puffy Snow People

Combine a handful of fluffy white cotton balls, a stick of glue and a snowman shape cut from construction paper for this fun and easy craft. Children will enjoy gluing cotton balls on their snow person and teachers will enjoy the low-mess glue sticks. For a jaunty cap cut a top hat from black construction paper that can be glued on after the cotton balls are adhered. Small circular pieces of construction paper can be used for buttons if so desired. Use the puffy snow people as a tie in to a discussion about the science of snow.

Symmetry Snowflakes

Teaching symmetry starts in the preschool years. It can be made easy with a simple snowflake craft that will allow the children to practice their fine motor skills. Have them take a sheet of white construction paper and fold it in half lengthwise (like a hot dog bun) and then again in half widthwise (like a hamburger bun). Prepare a snowflake quarter template for them to trace onto the folded paper after it has been neatly lined up along the folded sides. Safety scissors will help them cut out the pattern. Once the snowflakes have been cut out, open them to see the symmetry. Add coloring, glitter or glue on sparkles to make the snowflakes stand out.

Silly Seedling

Bean plants grow year round and are a great craft activity turned science lesson for the preschool set. Have the children decorate a Styrofoam cup with a silly face using magic markers. Fill the cup about 3/ 4 of the way full with potting soil and place a dried bean into the dirt. Place the cups in a warm place that receives light and watch for the beans to sprout. The children love drawing the faces on their cups and getting dirty in the soil while the teacher has an instant lesson plan in hand.

Mitten Memories

It is never too early to have children tell of things that they remember, and the winter is full of fascinating memories and stories. In this simple craft the children will trace from a pattern and cut out two mitten shapes from construction paper. On each mitten they can recite to the teacher a fun winter memory that she will write onto the cut out. After a memory has been written on each mitten the child can decorate them on the blank side and tie a length of yarn to connect the two pieces. For very young preschoolers assistance may be required with tying the yarn. Hang the mittens around the room or on a classroom bulletin board for display. This activity is great to integrate into story time or show and tell. Consider sending the completed mittens home with a note asking parents to share their favorite winter memories with their children.

Crafts provide a wonderful opportunity to integrate other subjects into a lesson. They do not have to be overly messy or expensive to be effective and fun. Allow children the freedom to express their ideas and memories this winter with the easy craft projects above.

It is back to school time and this is a perfect time for crafts for children. Crafts are fun to do and offer children the opportunity to be creative. There are many popular crafts for elementary school children, but here are three that are sure to please:

Fun Shapes Craft Foam Magnets

You will need:

Craft foam (different colors, to your preference)

Non-toxic glue

Magnet sheets

Safety scissors

Begin by cutting the craft foam into shapes that you like. You can make animals, or traditional shapes or even letters.

Once you have some shapes you like, it is time to glue on the details that you would like to add to them. If it is an animal, you might want to glue on spots or eyes. If it is a shape, you might want to add a smaller shape. Add your own special touches and be creative about your magnets.

Tip: remember to make your magnets small – less than three inches square to get the best results

Allow your project to fully dry. This could take an hour or up to an afternoon depending on how heavy your project is.

Now that your project is dry, you can add the magnet sheet to the back. Most magnet sheets have self-adhesive on the back, it sticks quite well. This part you may want to ask a parent to do, it can be a little tricky to get it just right. Measure the craft foam project and make your magnet shape just a little smaller than the craft foam project. Then cut the magnet out. Then take off the backing and add it to the craft foam project. You’re done! Stick it on the refrigerator and enjoy!

Butterfly Headband

You will need:

Colored construction paper

A stapler

Safety scissors

Colored markers or crayons

Non-toxic glue

For this project begin by having a parent or adult measure the size of the child‘s head to create a headband. Then make a thick strip of construction paper, about three inches wide in any color that you like that will go all around the head. For this project we suggest using green construction paper. Staple it together.

Now it is time to make the butterflies. Fold a piece of paper together and lightly trace the half of a butterfly on it. Then cut it out. Repeat this process until you have at least six butterflies. Make them in different sizes and colors.

Decorate the butterflies using markers and/or crayons as you like best. Once you have decorated them, glue them onto the headband.

Once the headband is dry, your project is complete!

Apple Print Cards

You will need:

Fresh apples (at least three)

Knife (for parent to use)

Cardstock or cards

Craft paint

Begin by cutting the apples in half (a parent or adult does this). Then dip the apple in paint and press the apple onto the front of the card. It will make an interesting print!

To make this unique, make cuts into the apple, or cut the apple into different shapes. Then make more prints. You can also print on the envelope.

Allow the cards to dry, and then send them to someone special!
