The Royal Worcester factory was founded in 1751 and is the only porcelain factory established in the mid-18th century that has been in continuous production until the present day. The founders were Dr John Wall, a doctor of medicine and William Davies, an apothecary. They started with soft-past porcelain functional wares, particularly tea services. Their soft-paste porcelain had a unique property that made them famous around the world – it could withstand hot liquid. This meant that their teapots and cups could have hot tea poured into them without cracking. Early pieces were in the Chinese style, sometimes using blue and white on shapes copied from English silver.

The first Worcester figurine was made in 1757 – ‘Cupid at Vulcan’s Forge’, which is thought to be modelled by Chelsea modeller John Toulouse. Worcester excels in figurines to this day. During the 1760s and 1770s Worcester porcelain was influenced by Meissen with colours such as the very deep blue being introduced. By this time some of Worcester’s porcelain was being painted in London under their London agent, Thomas Flight, who took over the business with his sons John and Joseph, when Dr John walled died in 1776. They were later joined by Martin Barr and the factory went under the name Flight and Barr, and other combinations of the names until 1840.

During the Regency period Royal Worcester porcelain looked lavish and colourful and exhibited some wonderful gilding and painting. During this time Flight and Barr merged with the ‘Chamberlain factory and the ‘Grainger’ factory, who were both originally rivals of Worcester. In 1862 the ‘Worcester Royal Porcelain Co’ was established and wares were to become known as ‘Royal Worcester’.

In the mid 19th century ‘Parian’ was introduced and made a huge difference to their production. Parian is a durable material with a high feldspar content and is perfect for detailed modelling. This meant that figures could be produced with the finest of detail and quality. The material is also perfect for gilding and enamelling, which meant that pieces could be produced with lavish detail.

Worcester continued to keep up with the fashionable trends during the Victorian period. They excelled in ‘pierced’ porcelain and reproduced ivory images in porcelain. Figurines were very popular at this time and the majority of the work was being done by modellers such as Charles Toft and James Hadley.

During the 20th century Worcester had fierce competition from Royal Doulton and as figurines were hugely popular Worcester and Doulton fought for market share. Worcester produced a range of animals, starting with a tortoise in 1910. It was modelled by George Evans and was a massive success. This encouraged Worcester to produce further animals which included birds, fish, a rabbit and a mouse, which were being produced until the 1950s.

During the early 20th century Worcester artists specialised in hand painting. This was put onto vases, urns, and traditional tea and coffee services and they are highly collectable. The pieces by the Stinton family and Harry Davies are some of England’s finest porcelain of all time and Highland cattle and fruit are particularly famous subjects.

During the first World War Worcester produced figurines similar to those made in Germany in previous years. They also tried a cheaper production of figurines in a high-fired earthenware instead of ‘Parian’ ware, although this was not successful. The company tried to branch out in a new direction by making items such as Toby Jugs and ashtrays, although Worcester did not excel at this.

Going back to their roots Worcester had ninety new figurines modelled, to keep pace with Doulton. New modellers were brought in from London and the next few years were profitable. The most notable of these new modellers was Freda Doughty, whose contribution to the success of Royal Worcester figurines has been unrivalled since.

Worcester are still going strong and their output is varied, including tableware, giftware and the special ‘Prestige’ range. Current ranges include ‘Nine lives character cats’ which is widely available. As with all Royal Worcester, each piece is made by hand and skilfully painted by artists. Prices are between £15 – £25. A new Noddy set has recently been launched, including favourite characters from the book, Noddy, Big Ears, Mr Plod and Tessie Bear are all in the collection. Each figure is £25, while the whole set can be had for the bargain price of £100. Worcester also do a giftware range for children, consisting of bowls, mugs and plates as well as gift sets in a tin, with prices starting from £10.

A very popular range from Worcester is the Cicely Mary Barker flower fairy range, the famous images from Barker have been put onto plates and dishes and there are also twelve wall plates to collect, each featuring a different flower fairy from Cicely Mary Barker’s collection.

Worcester try to keep ahead of the competition by constantly introducing modern lines. Currently a Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen design range of mugs is available and Jamie Oliver tableware is also very popular. This does not mean that Royal Worcester neglect the traditional. Currently, in the Prestige range, Clive Christian is behind a lavish and sophisticated service. This is described as being ‘rendered in raised gold on a cream ground with rich burnished gold, accentuating the whiteness of the fine bone china’.

The company still produce the old pattern, such as the fruit and highland cattle. These works are inspired by John and Harry Stinton and are produced in enamels in the same way they were 100 years ago. Royal Worcester have been at the forefront of the ceramics industry for over 250 years and still produce innovative and original pieces that entice buyers of tableware, giftware and collectors’ markets.

Pretty Princess Parties for a Royal Celebration

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Every girl dreams of being a princess, and what better way to celebrate your royal beauty than by throwing her a princess party? Princess parties can easily be done on a tight budget or can be as lavish as Cinderella’s ball, all it takes is imagination.

Invitations to the princess party could be designed as scrolls rolled up and hand delivered to each guests “Hear ye, Hear ye, all maidens and knights of Stonebrook Elementary….”would be a clever way to kick off the theme. Once the children arrive they can each be announced properly as Lord or Lady of their last name and enter the room where the party is to be held.

After settling down at the princess party the guests can play dress up with tiaras, feather boas and pairs of mom’s high heels. For the boys invited to the party they can make their own swords and shields from cardboard from discarded boxes. Swords for the “knights” may also be purchased from the local dollar store.

Of course, no royal occasion is complete without a grand buffet at the princess party. Seating the guest of honor in her royal throne can be as simple as decorating an old chair with a sheet covered in plastic jewels. The grand feast can include the cake and punch served in “goblets” or plastic wine glasses.

Depending on the age of the birthday girl, parents may be in attendance at the princess party. Include the parents in the fun by offering adult snacks and by helping the boys with their swords. Princess parties create memories for lifetimes. With a little creativity your princess will be the belle of the ball.

Gallery 713 – A Royal Street Original

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The time of year doesn’t matter in New Orleans. The holidays may be over but the party never ends in NOLA. Get off your big bottom and take a little trip to that colorful Louisiana city on the mighty Mississippi.

I’m talking about Nawlins, yea you right! Streetcars, carriage rides, beignets and café au lait wait as you soak up the atmosphere and mystique of the historic New Orleans French Quarter. When you stroll down Royal Street checking out the shops and street performers, make a point of stopping in at 713 Royal. Located across from renowned Pirate’s Alley it is a great place to do a little shopping and little visiting. If you are headed away from Canal Street and get to Orleans Avenue you went too far. Take the few steps back, it is worth your while I guarantee, cher.

Filled with the work of many local artisans, Gallery 713 is a celebration of all that is New Orleans. A cornucopia of art, jewelry and original T-shirts (pssst – the artist is in the house!) there is something for everyone. Meet the proprietors, Dana and Heidi, and if you are lucky Shookie will be there too. These guys are so fun, easy to talk to and know all you want to know about any of the innovative work showcased in their unique shop.

Whether you are a serious collector, an appreciator or just a disoriented soul needing directions to your Vieux Carre’ hotel, the warm southern welcome is as sweet and enjoyable as a pecan praline. Dana’s long history in the French Quarter and French Market and Heidi’s vivacious personality make this a must stop on any French Quarter visit. The fact that you can get fabulous distinctive stuff and not break the bank is, as they say here, “lagniappe” (something extra). This Gallery is always rockin’ so don’t bother knockin’ – come on in ya’ll!

Royal Family Trees

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are interested in genealogy or history, royal family trees are excellent illustrations of the strange, convoluted, and always interesting tales of kings, queens and nobility. Take a look at a few them and you will be able to find the most remarkable tales with every line.

Thanks to both the adequate resources and the bookkeeping available to the nobility, royal family trees are among the most complete, most accurate, and longest kept family trees in the world. The nobility is often very interested in the genealogy of its members, as it is important to figure out just who is noble and who is not. Once upon a time, it was assumed that those with royal blood were superior to those without, so a precise role of all the members of the nobility was necessary to ensure that nothing was spoiled by mixing with those of inferior birth.

However, one of the problems with that was the fact that there was a very limited number of noble persons available. Thus, intermixing was a severe problem in the gene pool. So, when you look at a royal family tree, there will be lines that diverge, then suddenly meet up again a few generations down the road, when two distantly related, or sometimes not so distantly related people joined together and started creating new nobility. Thus, the generations started having that many more congenital problems, simply because they were receiving several genes that weren’t quite formed right and were being passed down with every generation, instead of being diluted by spreading them out amongst the general populace.

As well, there constant marriages and remarriages of many members of the nobility make some interesting viewing. King Henry XIII of the England comes immediately to mind. This kind was marriage six times during his reign, meaning that he needed to either divorce or kill off his first five wives at the very least. When reading a royal family tree, every line is a story and every person a somebody. You don’t need to wonder who any of the names are, they will show up in history books somewhere.

If you would like to read more about royal family trees, it is very easy to find them. They can be found on the Internet, in history books, and in the library. So feel free to take a look at them and dive into the strange world of the royalty and their often bizarre but never boring histories. Check one out today and start one of the most exciting history lessons you can ever receive.

How to Make Dark Colored Icing – Making Red, Black, and Dark Blue

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Making dark colored icing can be a little tricky. If you’ve tried, you’ve probably ran into the same problems most do.

The most common problem is that the color is simply not dark enough. Have you ever tried to make red, but it only looks pink? Then, to try to make it darker you add more and more food color. Makes sense right? Next thing you know the consistency of your icing has changed. So you give it a little taste and yuck! It now tastes bitter and disgusting. Does this sound familiar?

Are you frustrated yet? I am worn out just talking about it. Well, there is an easier way to make dark colored icing!

Let’s start with making red.

How to make Red

What you will need:

-red paste or gel concentrated food color

-red powder food color

-toothpick

The first thing we want to do is make our frosting a nice pink color. To do this use the red paste or gel coloring. Dip a clean toothpick into the color, or just squeeze a small amount if using gel in a tube or bottle. Now, mix in the color.

The goal is to get a nice medium (not too light, not too dark) shade of pink. Just add the color a little at a time and mix until you reach a nice medium shade of pink.

Next, we are going to use the red powder color. Sprinkle the red powder into your frosting a little at a time and mix it in. You will notice it getting darker. Add the powder color until the icing starts to look red. Set it on the counter and walk away for about 10 minutes. When you come back, it will have darkened to a nice shade of red.

How to make Black

What you will need:

-black paste or gel concentrated food coloring

-black powder color

-toothpick

There are two easy ways to make black.

The first is using chocolate frosting. Simply add your black paste or gel food coloring to the chocolate. Since it is already dark, it will not take much color to make it black.

Not everyone likes or wants to use chocolate though. The second method uses white or buttercream frosting to make black. It is exactly the same as making the red.

You want to first make your icing a nice shade of gray. Using the black paste or gel food coloring, mix in small amounts of color until you reach a medium shade of gray. Dip a clean toothpick into the color, or squeeze out a small amount if using gel in a tube or bottle.

Next, add the black powder color a few sprinkles at a time and mix it in until it starts to look black. Walk away for about 10 minutes and it will be dark black when you return.

How to make Dark Blue

What you will need:

-royal blue paste or gel concentrated food coloring

-blue powder color

-toothpick

When making dark blue it is best to start with royal blue paste or gel as your base. There are several shades of blue available, but royal blue produces the best results.

Dip your toothpick in the food color, or squeeze a small amount from the tube or bottle if using gel. Mix it in. Add color until you reach a nice “true” blue color. True blue to me is like the blue on the American flag, a nice medium shade of blue.

Now, sprinkle the powder color in a little at a time and mix it in until the icing starts getting darker. Set it to the side and come back in ten minutes. It will darken as it sits.

If you are trying to make navy blue, add a very small touch of black paste or gel color. When I say very small I mean literally just a touch of it. This will deepen it enough to make it a dark navy blue.

Use the paste/gel food color and powder food color combination to make all of your dark colored icing. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Royal Ascot – Dress Code For the Royal Enclosure

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Royal Ascot is considered one of the fashion highlights of the year and one would be forgiven for forgetting that this is, essentially a horse race meeting.

For many years Ascot has become an opportunity for women to dress in their best formal clothes and wear a hat and in particular Ladies Day has become very competitive, particularly in the hat department. Every year produces more and more exotic and outrageous designs.

Gentlemen are required to wear a morning suit, a uniform or national dress. At one time men would be barred from entry if they didn’t wear a hat worn. Brown shoes are a definite “no no”.

There are also some very clear rules for Ladies wishing to enter the Royal Enclosure. Etiquette states that hats must be worn, legs must not be bare, and dresses must not be above the knee. Exposed cleavage should be kept to the minimum and even sleeveless dresses can be considered inappropriate if the straps are too narrow. Off the shoulder and halter neck designs could also prevent entry.

If you are planning to go to Ascot this year the following suggestions may help;

Hats: should be large enough to cover the crown of your head but not overwhelmingly large. Remember you need to wear it all day, so it must be comfortable. Black is considered inappropriate. If a hat is something you rarely wear, consider renting one. It is more cost effective and means you can have a different style every year.

Shoes: again comfort is important but most formal dresses are enhanced with heels. Practice walking in them before the day, it is not acceptable to kick of your shoes and go barefoot later in the day!

Dress: knee length or longer and worn with tights or stockings is essential and necklines should be modest. A pashmina scarf or jacket can be worn to make a dress more acceptable by Ascot terms.

Bag: your bag can compliment your outfit and should be in proportion to your size.

Umbrella: it might rain! Make sure you have an umbrella in a coordinating color to off set your dress.

If you are comfortable, know you look great and are confident that you have abided by the “Ascot Rules” you will be assured of a great day out to be remembered for years to come.

Benefits of Royal Jelly – An Alternative to Potency Pills

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you seen those commercials that show middle-aged, graying men with a newly discovered twinkle in their libido-driven eyes? Sly smiles from coy women, motorcycles, guitars, pick-up trucks and hot tubs remind men of recaptured memories.

With Viagra sponsoring stock cars, as well as politicians confessing to “erectile dysfunction” on national television, America has embraced drugs like Viagra and Cialis that keep the romance alive. But what are these intimacy drugs doing to your health – and could the benefits of Royal Jelly be a much safer, healthier alternative to Viagra?

The Downside to the Miracle Drugs of Viagra

There’s an interesting irony to all of those advertisements inviting you to relive the exhilaration of the free love days of your youth. You must be healthy enough to have sex before you buy the product that makes it easier for you to enjoy sex. There is indeed an inherent risk in using man-made chemicals – regardless of the end purpose. Ironically, Baby Boomers take as much blood pressure medicine as prescriptions for erectile dysfunction.

Nature’s Prescription for Erectile Dysfunction

Thankfully, nature already had an erectile dysfunction cure long ago – in the form of Royal Jelly.

Royal Jelly has long been credited with improving sexual function. Scientists at the New York Medical College found that Royal Jelly contains a complex compound which stimulates the sex glands of women and men by acting like a natural hormone. And underscoring that report are discoveries by French biochemists, who determined that Royal Jelly super-charges the treatment of sterility and sex organ insufficiency.

One of the reasons that researchers are so enthusiastic about studying Royal Jelly for treating reproductive organs is the volumes of scientific evidence that confirms what it does for the queen bee. Because she is fed Royal Jelly exclusively from birth, she enjoys a life span about 30 times longer than the most senior worker bees. And during that life, she lays millions of eggs, as many as 2,000 a day!

Royal Jelly is considered one of the densest, most potent sources of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in all of nature. It is particularly rich in all the B vitamins, especially pantothenic acid, which promotes fertility and healthy reproduction. Research results showed it was important in rejuvenating sex glands, increased sperm count and sexual function in both men and women.

Good for Intimacy – and Your Heart!

Here is where the benefits of Royal Jelly truly outweigh that of Viagra or Cialis: Royal Jelly is good for your heart! Royal Jelly’s “disclaimer” is that this potent natural cure can prompt your entire circulatory system to work better, including the most important muscle of your body: the heart.

Research has demonstrated the benefits of Royal Jelly in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, arrhythmia and heart disease. Royal Jelly boosts adrenal function, and the adrenal glands are what control heart rate. These studies show that regular use will return high blood pressure to normal. Scientists have also learned that the benefits reverse hardening of the arteries, and in fact, can produce a 10% to 15% reduction in cholesterol.

Move aside Viagra! Royal Jelly is a potent erectile dysfunction treatment that strengthens and regulates your heart. Indeed, nature invented the only heart medicine that has the “side effect” of cranking up your libido.
