I was a college student in 1979 when Chrysler Corporation made its appeal to the Carter Administration for a government bail out. Back then, the automaker was bleeding through cash and seeking a one billion dollar loan guarantee in a bid to stay afloat. After months of bargaining, the federal government agreed to help Chrysler, signing off on a larger 1.5 billion dollar loan guarantee, a move that insured the survival of America’s third largest automaker while saving tens of thousands of jobs.
Today, Chrysler is looking for new assistance from the federal government, but this time they are being joined by their two largest American competitors, General Motors and Ford. Unlike in 1979, the chances of any one of the three automakers getting government help — beyond the $25 billion already earmarked for plant retooling — is greatly diminished for reasons that neither one of the companies may fully understand.
Let’s take a look at the current automotive climate and what the three automakers must do to win federal bailout approval.
In 1979, Chrysler’s survival was at stake as were tens of thousands of automaker jobs. With 250,000 employees, Chrysler’s demise could have sent shock waves through an already strained economy, an economic climate not too different from what is being experienced today.
Back then, Chrysler took five months to lobby Congress for assistance, even replacing their chairman, John Riccardo, with Lee Iaccoca, the executive who helped bring the iconic Ford Mustang to market. Iacocca, unlike today’s automaker chiefs, traveled back and forth to Washington on commercial jets to negotiate on behalf of Chrysler. Today’s automotive bosses have private jets to whisk them back and forth, a source of contention for many who oppose helping the automakers.
Even before the federal government offered to help Chrysler in 1979, the automaker was forced to seek union concessions while state and local governments connected to plants provided tax concessions. White collar workers, dealers, suppliers and banks each chipped in, providing what eventually amounted to two billion dollars in cost cuts.
It was only after Iacocca and Chrysler managers made these changes did the federal government intervene. Finally, when Chrysler had the money in hand they were able to develop new products including their popular K-Cars and managed to pay back their loan seven years early. In the end, the federal government made a profit on lending money to Chrysler.
Today, the automakers are asking for cash, but they’re going about it all wrong. As recently as October, General Motors was considering purchasing Chrysler while saying that they had enough money to last through 2009. Now, the purchase is off and both companies say that they probably only have enough cash on hand to last through 2008. Ford, is somewhat better off, saying that they should have enough money to last through the end of next year. Still, Ford has joined its Detroit brethren in asking for government assistance.
Public support for helping the Big Three isn’t anywhere as strong as it was three decades ago when the three companies dominated the automotive scene. At that time, only Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors were building cars in the US, but today a number of foreign automakers have set up shop. Americans see plants being run by Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Mercedes, Hyundai, and BMW making money and cannot understand why union run shops continue to bleed Ford, Chrysler and GM dry. As long as there are stark differences between the labor arrangements between foreign and domestic producers, support for any loan assistance is tepid at best.
Perhaps the most difficult part of bailing out the automakers is that it is coming on the heels of a massive $700 billion bail out of the financial industry. That earlier plan is increasingly unpopular with many citizens who see that financial accountability is virtually nil and that the so-called emergency isn’t as dire as once made out to be.
Thus, even if the Big Three can find the time to make a compelling case for government assistance, support from legislators may not enough to help out. In that case, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing would be necessary, a move that could repair automaker problems quicker and more forcefully than any sort of assistance from Washington, D.C.

Punitive Damages in Medical Malpractice Cases

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Not all patients who file medical malpractice lawsuits are successful in their goal of being compensated by the health care provider in the proper amount that they want. The reasons are not all those who file complaints are able to prove negligence on the part of the doctor, nurse or health care facility and the courts limit the amount of damages awarded to malpractice victims. Courts are very meticulous when it comes to analyzing evidence and they require the presentation of strong and concrete evidence for every case they handle.
What happens then to patients who feel they were deprived of their right to safe and proper health care? The court can grant punitive damages which are non economic in nature apart from the compensatory damages award. However, these are only allowed in cases where the plaintiff can provide clear proof of misconduct by the health care provider involved. In other words, the plaintiff needs to establish that there was indeed an intention to cause harm or the defendant was reckless in its duty to provide safety to patients.
If you’re a patient who felt neglected while undergoing treatment in a hospital or were not given the proper medical care you were seeking during an emergency, you can consult a medical malpractice lawyer to help you understand this matter. An attorney whose specialization is in handling medical cases will be able to assist you in the legal process should you decide to file a lawsuit.
The goal of punitive damages is mainly to encourage reform notably in the behavior of the defendant and prevent the occurrence of the same mistake in the future. No monetary compensation will be granted in this case unlike those seeking compensatory damages.
Additionally, the court may decide to carry out punitive damages in cases where compensatory damages may not be a sufficient solution to the misconduct done by the defendant and to the personal injury suffered by the plaintiff. Courts can punish the health provider to discourage the repeat of the same misbehavior and this can be done through the granting of punitive damages.
Laws governing punitive damages vary from one state to another. States that allow this type of damages in medical malpractice cases usually set a limit to the amount of claims that can be awarded. Many states also set a high standard for the granting of punitive damages.
Florida is one state that has a comprehensive medical malpractice bill in place. The bill provides for the implementation of reform measures such as requiring hospitals and physicians to adopt patient safety plans and inform patients when they are injured, allowing insurance firms to study malpractice cases and offer settlements, allowing the state to suspend the license of doctors who fail to pay damage awards within 30 days and requiring doctors, hospitals and insurers to provide the state with information on premium rates, medical errors and malpractice cases.
If you or a loved one becomes a victim of malpractice, the first step to take is to consult with a reputable lawyer. Cooperation and constant communication are vital to be able to file the necessary lawsuit within the allowable statute of limitations.

Should You Buy a Car From a Struggling Car Manufacturer?

Image : http://www.flickr.com
I cannot imagine that executives of certain car companies, such as Chrysler, will like what I have to say about them in this article. After all, when you’re struggling for your very survival, having someone tell you to look elsewhere for a new car isn’t exactly supportive. Then again, far be it from me to tell anyone what to do!
It is difficult not to single out a particular car company as only a handful are in precarious shape, possibly facing bankruptcy followed by liquidation. That bit of news doesn’t bode well for buyers who could be stuck with a car that is no longer made, no longer supported, and may no longer have a warranty. That thirty thousand dollar investment could suddenly be worthless, a loss that few consumers can afford to handle.
If you are looking to buy a new car this year and are considering a model from an automaker going through severe financial difficulties, you may not be completely vulnerable. But, you need to do some research (including keeping your eyes and ears open to the news) to see what the future holds for that company. Some questions to ask yourself include:
Is my car company insolvent? If so, will federal funds bail the company out and for how long? Both General Motors and Chrysler are going through an incredibly stressful financial time, but both have received some financial assistance from taxpayers in the form of low cost loans. The key for each company is whether those funds will be enough or whether additional funds will be requested and approved by Congress and the president.
Is my car company looking at other business options? One way that automakers plan on remaining around for the long haul is to reorganize their operations. General Motors will be getting rid of two brands – Saab and Hummer – while scaling back on Pontiac and, perhaps, Saturn. The company is still closing factories and laying off workers to align production with demand, a good cost saving move that could help. Chrysler is teeming up with Nissan to build a few models and recently announced a deal with Fiat which could bring several new models stateside as early as next year.
Will my warranty be protected? Even if Chrysler or General Motors were to fail, most analysts believe that Congress would step in to at least guarantee warranties. This means that car values would stabilize and dealers would be able to clear their lots of inventory before shutting down. Owning a brand that is no longer produced may not sound appealing, but given the good buys sure to follow, it could be an attractive option for some people.
In all, these are difficult days for car manufacturers as well as for consumers. If you are risk adverse, then you’ll take your hard earned dollars elsewhere. If not, an excellent buy awaits you as does much caution when making your purchase decision.

Tips For Getting Cell Phone Wallpapers

Image : http://www.flickr.com
People who want to be different from others may have unique characters, clothes and hair styles, no exception to their mobile phone wallpapers. There are many people who are fond of getting new wallpapers, especially young teens. These wonderful wallpapers give them a fresh and interesting feeling. When looking at these pretty wallpapers on their cell phones, they feel very happy and relaxed.
People who want to get wallpapers should follow some tips, which might help them to get ideal wallpapers.
On the one hand, when you download wallpapers, make sure you know your cell phone can receive it or not. The bigger the size of the wallpaper, the more memory space they require. Sometimes big wallpapers cannot be downloaded by your cell phone, for your cell phone might not have enough memory space. However, the wallpaper’s size determines whether it would appear good or not on your screen. The bigger the wallpapers are, the more vivid they are. So what you should do is to download proper sized wallpaper according to the memory space of your cell phone.
On the other hand, in order to get unique wallpapers, more and more people prefer to make wallpapers themselves. Cell phone wallpapers can be made with the help of wallpaper production software. It is important for you to know that different cell phone brands and models use different software. You can’t make wallpapers with the help of any software unless you find the compatible software for your cell phone. There’s a lot of information offered for this kind of software on the internet, just search for it and download the compatible software for your cell phone.
If you prefer the convenient way, you can download cell phone wall papers directly. While if you enjoy making wallpapers yourself, just try to do it with the help of the compatible software. Anyway, I hope you can get new, fresh and clean wallpapers for your cell phones and would enjoy looking at them for a long time.

The Death and Life of Bobby Z”.
Einfach mal drauf achten!

Rune (Mac)
Rune (Mac) This game is haunting me – in a good way! – E. Harris – San Francisco, CA United States
I got this game and began playing and did not instantly like it – put it away and then months later, after I had let Max Payne become a memory I played it again. I played it three times in all – once at each level. That is unusual for me. I play a game once, rarely twice and I move on. Not this game. I sold my copy a few months ago and I can STILL hear the little grunts and growls of the goblins in my head, the clank of the sword. I enjoyed all the bad guys, the little puzzles, the timed runs even the nasty vegetation. This game has so many levels, so many different little worlds… I confess I miss it horribly and want to play again. And again. I wish I had never played it so I could play it for the first time. I wish they would make an advanced version for the Mac so I could keep playing it! So, I am buying for the second time. This is a winning game in my book. Better than any other I have played.
Gathering of Developers: This third-person action/adventure game is steeped in Norse mythology. Players assume the role of Ragnar the Viking, mightiest warrior of a bygone age. In an age when might makes right, it is Ragnar who doles out justice on the blade of his massive battle-axe. Players explore beautiful settings both above and below the mountains of the far north as Ragnar fights his way through several stunning and unique kingdoms to an ultimate confrontation with the Sark Amen, the shadowy warrior-masters of the netherworld.
Rune is a third-person perspective game of intense action and adventure steeped in a blend of Norse mythology and high fantasy. Players have to use their brains as well as their massive brawn to survive as they explore the fully 3D game world fighting off fantastic creatures from both Norse legend and the fertile minds of the Human Head staff with their array of swords, axes and magical devices.
The game focused on equal parts melee combat and exploration, with levels ranging from a Viking town to the caverns of the Dwarves to a city in the mountains. Players have access to a array of melee weapons based both in fact and fantasy as Ragnar delves deeper into the realms of myth and further from his old reality.
Rune included a full single-player game as well as several specially designed multiplayer levels that allow players to cooperate or compete as Ragnar or another Viking warrior. The multiplayer game also included special handicap and team modes to widen the multiplayer experience.
System Requirements: (MAC only)
- MAC OS 8.1
- PCI PowerMac (including IMac 2nd generation machine)
- Hardware Accelerated 3D video card (supporting OpenGL) – 6MB or better
- RAM: 64MB
- CD-ROM; 4x
- Disk Space: 400MB
- Supports Internet Connection (TCP/IP – 28.8Kbp)
Combine the Unreal Tournament 3-D engine with hard-nosed Viking melee combat and what do you get? You get Rune, an epic third-person action game from Human Head Studios. You take on the role of Ragnar, a young warrior spared from death by Odin but who must fight his own way up from the underworld to defend his village and exact revenge upon the dark Vikings who killed his father.
Set in grim, exceptionally well-designed environments ranging from ancient crypts full of undead warriors to a towering mechanical Dwarven city, Rune mixes typical first-person shooter gameplay with the rigors of close-quarter melee combat. Instead of the shotguns and rocket launchers you’ve mastered in other games, you will find yourself armed only with an array of swords, hammers, and axes in Rune. Combat with these weapons is very different–and very challenging, particularly in the game’s latter levels and against multiple opponents.
The graphics in Rune are excellent, with an exceptional attention to detail on just about every level. The lighting is very well done and so are the sound effects used throughout the game. The music is suitably heroic, though it plays too infrequently and loops too quickly. Overall, the game does a marvelous job of setting the mood for head-smashing Viking combat. There are even some nifty gameplay twists that keep you in the proper frame of mind. When you’re wounded, for example, you can drink mead, scarf down a leg of mutton, or grab and eat a lizard off any nearby wall to gain some health back. And when Ragnar is done drinking his mead, he smashes the cup on the floor. He deals with crates, barrels, and many doors in his path the same way.
While the single-player game is outstanding–and features one of the flat-out coolest game-won reward sequences ever–the multiplayer action is where you can really test your sword-fighting skills. Although the game includes 43 single-player levels and only seven multiplayer maps, Rune has proven to be quite popular online, with up to 16 players going at it in wild melee combat.
The only disappointment in Rune may be the fact that it does not offer any computer-controlled bots for solo deathmatch play. Even without the bots, Rune is easily one of the year’s top games in any genre and an intense epic that no action fan should be without. –Michael Ryan
Pros:
- Intense melee action using the Unreal Tournament engine
- Epic story line set in the land of Vikings and Nordic mythology
- Excellent level design, with impressive attention to detail
- Great graphics, sound, and music
Cons:
- An occasional AI flaw will halt action on some levels
- No bots for multiplayer mode

One of my favorite golf instruction books . . . when I have a bug to fix in my swing, I actually refer to this oldie along with Butch Harmon’s “Four Cornerstones of Winning Golf,” and Harvey Penick’s “Little Red Book.”
Highly recommend for all levels.
