Saab is no longer part of the GM matrix, having been sold by the Detroit-based automaker in early 2010 to Spyker, N.A., a Dutch supercar maker. That move in itself has presented some problems, an issue which we’ll explore shortly. Saab, the Swedish automaker, has been given a new lease on life. How that plays out down the road remains to be seen.

Selling Saab made sense for GM who already had made plans to close Saturn and Pontiac and was in the process of selling Hummer when that deal fell through. With Saturn, Pontiac and the now unsold Hummer out of the way, and Saab with it, GM is in a better position to concentrate on the fortunes of Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Chevrolet.

Indeed, General Motors says that it is best suited to manage four brands in North America instead of the eight it had as recently as summer 2009. Saab lives and will enjoy a few years of sharing product and technology with GM before the lifeline is cut.

The problem with Spyker is that this ultra low volume producer of exotic supercars knows nothing about mass production. With fewer than 50 cars built annually, the Dutch automaker has a huge learning curve to climb.

Annual Sales

Fortunately for them, Saab sales are below 100,000 units annually, but that still makes Saab a comparable giant to Spyker even though it produces less than two percent of the annual volume that car companies such as GM, Toyota and Volkswagen build. And, Saab has three product lines and has plans to offer another one in the near future.

That new product line, however, will not come with GM help. Nor does Saab have the resources to build another car itself. That means the Saab Spyker Automotive Group will need to turn to another automaker for help. The good money has it that the Fiat Group will supply the platform, engine and transmission.

And why is that? Because Fiat does an excellent job of leveraging and spreading its assets to serve other companies besides itself. Fiat platforms underpin cars sold by select European makes and will soon do the same for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat has gone on record saying that consolidation and cooperation between automakers is necessary in order to have the scale and volume to effectively compete globally.

New Model

Saab hasn’t announced its next model yet, but expect that news to come forth before the end of 2011. Even so, Saab Spyker may need a strong partner to emerge because when its present line up grows stale, the automaker will be in no position to update same.
