Das Buch fängt zwar etwas langsam an, aber nach einigen Seiten kann man es einfach nicht mehr hinlegen. Besonders das Ende fande ich spitze. Ein tolles Western.
: Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless–McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities–but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends: The Publishing Demos1968-72 For the Fans – The Maestro –
Kris Kristofferson is one of the all time greats and deserves to be up there on the same lofty peak as Lennon and McCartney, Ray Davies, Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan (at his best). His lyrics are never cliche and while he may not be the greatest singer what he lacks in voice he makes up for in passion and passion is what has driven him over the years. Yes, I’m a fan of Kris Kristofferson and disappointed he doesn’t make the trip south to Melbourne (Australia) more often however this album is similar to The Beatles ‘Anthology’ series. The rough and the ready and it is just wonderful listening to hear songs in their early stages and knowing how many of them became so much better over time.

This album is one for the fans more than the person looking for a hit or something out of this world. What you hear is an artist at work and a great one at that. We can only hope that the album is just the first of this type. There is a good booklet containing background to the songs and some photos we’ve not seen before or rarely. Hopefully Kris will add to this album with the written story of his life.

A treacherous road condition during winter is a bane to all drivers. Driving through snow and sleet doubles the travel time, or even worse, you and your car can even end up immobilized because of the extreme conditions.

While moving to a region with warmer climate may be the permanent solution, there are always certain precautions that are more realistic and achievable for drivers living in winter lands. To make it through the snow season without major issues, here are a few suggestions:

Check the Battery. Fact: Cold weather decreases the performance of a car’s battery. To avoid this situation, you may want to get a plug-in charger. Plug it in at night and attach it to your battery and in the morning you will be assured of a charged battery. It is also important to have your car’s battery and electrical system tested every once in a while. If the battery is almost 3 years old, it may be a good idea to have it tested at local service stations on a regular basis.

Check your Anti-Freeze. Good anti-freeze protects water in the radiator system against freezing and increases the boiling point of the water in the radiator system. To avoid it from leaking, it’s best to check your anti-freeze a couple of times a year. Experts also advise to change your anti-freeze every 2 to 3 years to keep it from breaking down. Anti-freeze is usually diluted with water following an estimate of 50/50 normal ratio. Check the directions on your specific brand to know the exact proper mix.

Pressure Check for Leaks. Conducting a pressure check can wash away any impurities such as rust that may clog the vehicle’s system. Don’t forget to inspect the cooling system for any visible leaks, especially around the water pump, radiator, hoses, freezing plugs, heater core, and clamps. If you notice that the belts are worn out, replace it right away. Frayed belts cannot drive the water pump, no matter how new or unclogged your system is.

Oil. Synthetic oil works well in both low and high temperatures. While conventional oil might lose its viscosity during the bitter cold months, the chemical makeup of synthetic oil keeps the lubrication fluid from freezing up, resulting to better lubrication of engine parts.

Tires. You may want to switch to all weather tires or get specially made snow tires for better handling when driving through the slippery and snowy roads. Keep your regular tires though because all weather tires are not advisable for prolonged normal road use. You can also attach snow chains to tires for increased traction.

Windshield Blades. Proper windshield blades can save you from a snowstorm as much as a good engine and cooling system can. Remember that visibility is the key to accident avoidance.

As for you, it’s best to keep a flashlight, a cell phone, and a medical kit in your car, just in case the weather is too much to bear for your vehicle. Think of survival, so pile up on essential items that will help you get through any unforeseen accidents or situations while driving until the winter season ends.

I’ve been a huge fan of Ben Folds back since his days with Ben Folds Five. I still think that this band was one of the best of the 1990s and I was upset to see them break up when they did. Despite the fact that Ben Folds is an incredible musician who has had a great career going solo this past decade, I still think that his best work was with the backing support of his other two band mates, Darren Jessee and Robert Sledge. It’s not the same without a talented bassist and drummer backing him up, not to mention the subtle but effective backup vocals.

The band came out with three albums during their existence. A few others that consisted of unreleased material, EPs, and B-tracks, but these don’t really count for the sake of this conversation.

Was their best album their self titled debut? Packed with some amazing songs like Philosophy, Jackson Cannery, Underground, Boxing, and so many other memorable hits, it could very well be this. The raw energy of the band was awesome here.

Was it possibly Forever and Ever Amen? This CD brings back great memories and I think the sound was a bit more polished, but the amazing song writing was still there. Songs like Selfless, Cold, and Composed, Missing the War, the Battle of Who Could Care Less, and others were all great.

Then there was the Biography of Reinhold Messner. All in all, a bit less consistent but the song “Magic” may be better than any other they ever made.

My vote goes to the band’s second album, Forever and Ever Amen.
