To many blues guitar fans, Savoy Brown is a band that should be mentioned in the same breath with outfits like Cream, John Mayall and The Blues Breakers and The Yardbirds; true powerhouses of the 60′ British Blues Invasion. These same people will tell you that Savoy Brown rode the final wave of that initial invasion to America’s shores and enjoyed an enormous popularity before interest in the blues began to wane in the early 70′s. And yet despite a revolving door lineup, Savoy Brown soldiers on.

Formed by Welsh guitarist Kim Simmonds at 19, The Savoy Brown Blues Band quickly established residence at the Battersea blues club, Kilroys, in 1966. At the time of their formation, Britain was in the midst of a love affair with American blues musicians and supported tours of bluesmen like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Big Bill Broonzy and that love affair spawned a spate of blues bands like The Rolling Stones, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac and others. Although Simmonds and the other members of Savoy Brown were too young to have learned their blues directly under these other bands, they certainly absorbed the sound and quickly became accomplished blues musicians.

The band came to attention of producer Mike Vernon (who had worked with Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack and Ten Years After as well) who, after briefly working at DECCA Records, formed his own label, Blue Horizon and their off shoots, Purdah and Outasite Records. Vernon was impressed with Savoy Brown saying that ‘they had a style that took no prisoners’ and quickly signed them to his Purdah label and released their first single ‘I Can’t Quit You, Baby’. Shortly after its release, harmonica player, John O’Leary left the band and was replaced by guitarist, Martin Stone. It set a pattern that was to run through the career of Savoy Brown; it’s near constant changing of musicians and line ups.

Through their deal with Purdah, Savoy Brown signed a long term deal with London DECCA and its subsidiary, Parrot Records and recorded their debut album Shake ‘Em On Down (a collection of blues covers) in 1967 to a limited U.K. release. Despite getting some notice in the U.K. Savoy Brown broke up immediately following the release of their debut album but Simmonds, perhaps in a moment of foreshadowing, opted to retain the name Savoy Brown and immediately reformed the group with a new line up. This line up became the motor for SB’s heyday. Simmonds added ‘Lonesome’ Dave Peverett, vocalist Chris Youlden (complete with bowler hat and monocle), drummer Roger Earle and bassist Rivers Jobe (although Jobe was eventually replaced by Tone Stevens.

The re-formed band released their second album Getting To The Point in 1968 in both England and the U.S. But getting the band together and getting the album out had their moments. “It was at the end of 1967. We’d had our equipment stolen, and Hughie Flint had his drums stolen and was still thinking of doing something different anyway, so that was kind of the last straw. Bob Brunning left at the same time and I think Kim wanted a change and so we auditioned and Roger Earl came to auditions and he got the gig. The first time he came with a bass player friend and they auditioned together. We weren’t keen on the bass player, so we passed on that rhythm section, and the next day I said ‘How about that drummer, I thought he was good.’ So we called him again and he got the gig. We got a bass player called Rivers Jobe. He was very young, about 15 or so. And that was the lineup for the Getting To The Point album,” recalled Peverett in an interview.

With the release of two additional albums in 1969, Blue Matter and A Step Further, and a ferocious touring schedule, Savoy Brown took hold in America. Curiously enough, they never achieved the same level of fan acceptance in their native England. In 1970, the band released two additional albums, Raw Sienna and Lookin’ In which helped cement their growing cultish like fame in the United States. Raw Sienna is considered by many to be the bands high point. As critic Peter Kurtz has written “There’s not a bad cut here, with enough variety to warrant frequent late-night listening”. However vocalist Youlden left the band shortly after its release leaving a huge hole in the lineup that has yet to be filled adequately. Youlden, perhaps the most impressive and distinctive voices in British blues left for a solo career that never found legs.

Following the release of Lookin’ In, the band lost three more members when Peverett, who had been asserting himself as more of a lead guitarist, Earl and Stevens left to form Foghat. Simmonds was beginning to get used to the idea of a constantly changing menu of musicians and again re-created the band with lineup after lineup. But with losing Youlden and the others, Savoy Brown was never able to quite re-create the power house sound that that they had cultivated in their glory years. Although Simmonds gave it an all out effort by adding Paul Raymond, Andy Silvester and drummer Dave Bidwell, all former members of British blues band, Chicken Shack (another band with trouble retaining a steady line up). This line up held together for two more Savoy Brown albums, the solid efforts Street Corner Talking and Hellbound Train (1971 and 1972 respectively).

Savoy Brown continued on throughout the Seventies and beyond but with a myriad of ever changing lineups, it had become nothing more than a vehicle for the mad, frenetic guitar lesson work of Simmonds, the only remaining original member. The band continues to record and tour, now a favorite of blues and rock festivals all over the world.

Those early Savoy Brown albums are some of finest boogie-blues / electric blues albums available and to student players, practically blues guitar lessons. And even now, Kim Simmonds can be counted on to deliver some of the grittiest, down and dirty blues guitar around. In a strange, an unintentional way, Savoy Brown could have been considered a training ground for British blues and blues rock players of that era.

How to Maximize Vehicle Battery Life

Car batteries, when you take a look at the function they provide, really are a strange component to a vehicle. As with the starter, they basically only provide a two second surge of electricity to start the car. After that, they’re pretty much dead weight being carried around with you. Why is that? Doesn’t the battery still run the electrical systems of the car? The answer really is no. Once the car is started, the alternator, which is basically just a standard generator, both runs the electrical systems and recharges the battery. In the long run, your alternator is responsible for the electrical components of the vehicle. So why not use the alternator to start the car then? Unfortunately you can’t.

The problem that’s difficult to overcome is that it takes a lot of voltage to turn over an engine and start the car. A battery gives a quick jolt of power that you can’t generate with an alternator. That’s why it’s still essential. But what I find most distressing is that your standard car battery is pretty expensive even though it has very limited use in the car. You only ever use your battery for a few seconds a day, and yet it sometimes costs $100 to change it out every few years.

That’s why I like battery booster packs. Battery booster packs are exactly what their name says they are, a device which boosts a dying or dead battery enough to give it that extra juice it needs to start the car. With a battery booster pack, you can prolong the life of a battery and have an emergency backup unit just in case. Battery booster packs are a nice thing because they have built in jumper cables, which makes them function as two tools in one.

Another nice trick is the rolling start. It’s true that this will only work for stick shift vehicles, but that’s just another reason why I prefer to drive a stick shift. If the battery in a stick shift car won’t start the engine, put the car in neutral and push it by hand to get it rolling. After that, with your foot down on the clutch, put the car in first and then quickly release the clutch again. If you’re rolling fast enough, and about 3 miles an hour should do it, the momentum will give enough energy to start the car. Pretty neat trick, huh. I’ve used it plenty of times.

Car batteries and starters are essential components of your car, no one’s doubting that. I just don’t like changing them at the first sign of trouble when they’re not technically critical to the vehicle’s function. General maintenance like brakes, oil changes, and replenishing vital fluids I make sure to keep well on top of. But car batteries and starters should be used up until they’re absolutely on their last leg if you ask me.

I’m one of the old school car drivers. Things like heat warmers, automatic push start buttons, keyless entry, and the like are just more things on a vehicle that can end up breaking down. Give me power windows and steering and I’ll be good to go. Everything else just seems like a headache.

I hope you learned something about car batteries and how battery booster packs might end up saving you some money. For more automotive tips, check out another of my articles on dent removal tools.

Response to your Inquiring

Unanswered Questions What are your feelings on time? Is probably the thing that people completely take advantage of. They’re always saying ‘Lifes too short’ or ‘Live in the moment’ But no one really understands that. For thousands of years people have been trying to harness time and tame it. Hence why to this day we have seconds, minutes, hours etc. But time is an uncontrollable force. It has always been, and will always be, there, even if nothing else is. Where would you get your ice cream? Ben and Jerry’s, Baskin Robins, or some Ice cream place that starts with an H and sounds German or something, I dont know the name xD What is the meaning of Life – This is a question that will never be answered to complete satisfaction. Life’s meaning could be absolutely nothing, a simple mistake in the warps of time and space, a coincidence. Life could be there to simply be there, something that seems phenomenal to us is just a blink in the eyes of time and space. The fact is that life may have no meaning and that people are simply trying to grasp something that is not there. Humans have a tendency to think highly of themselves, we love to think were the best, were special. They love putting themselves on pedestals above everything else. Which is why such a question even exists. We are here, so we MUST have some special reason for being here. For me, life was simply a coincidence, a tiny chance that came to be and that people are just thinking too highly of themselves by thinking

Pop Rocks Candy – Don’t Fear the Fizz

Don’t fear the Fizz, Pop Rocks Candy is safe, sound – and delicious!

Hard to believe it, but are still some people out there that are afraid to eat Pop Rocks candy or will never eat them with a serving of Coke. If you are one of those people, then I am writing this article especially for you. Years after the rumors have gone, the retro candy treat lives on.

Pop Rocks, the carbonated popping candy, was invented by chemist William A. Mitchell while working for the General Foods Corporation in 1956. Mitchell was also responsible for such innovations as Cool Whip, powdered egg whites, Tang, and quick-set Jell-O. He created the popular treat by mixing sugar, lactose, corn syrup, dye and artificial flavoring. The ingredients are heated, allowed to melt, and then carbonized. Bubbles form as the mixture is cooled. As you eat the candy, the bubbles burst, creating the signature popping sensation.

Contrary to urban legend, Pop Rocks candy does not contain an acid/base mixture (such as baking soda and vinegar) which produces large volumes of gas when mixed through chewing and saliva. Everyone remembers the rumor about Mikey from the Life cereal commercials. Mikey was reported to have died due to a stomach “explosion” after eating the candy and cola mixture. The rumor was and is completely false and the former child actor who was in the commercials, John Gilchrist, is alive and well.

If you have been craving the truly unique Pop Rocks candy experience, but were too scared, Don’t Fear the Fizz any longer! They have found their way back onto the candy scene; however, due the explosion in candy sales, they can still be hard to find. With their resurgence has come a wide variety of flavors, such as blue raspberry, watermelon, fruit punch, bubble gum, strawberry and occasionally the classic cherry flavor. They are even available now in sugar free! Sugar-Free strawberry Pop Rocks taste like their sugared cousins, only without the sugar. The are also available as Dips, which come with a lollipop to dip into the popping candy. Now, you just can’t beat that for good, clean, old-fashioned fun!

You can find Pop Rocks Candy and all your other Old Fashioned Candy Treats at Bulk Candy Store.

The Cute Show – Heartschallenger

FOR MORE OF THE CUTE SHOW VISIT: vbs.tv Have you seen a tiny pink ice cream truck with unicorns painted on it zipping around lately? That’s Heartschallenger! It’s a converted mail-truck that this adorable couple, Leyla and Ben, drive around to concerts and assorted events in LA and New York. They sell Pink Panther ice cream bars and Japanese trinkets and play good-vibes music on the truck’s loudspeaker. I met the Heartschallenger duo at Judi Rosen’s first annual Fleabag Fleamarket and Ice Cream Social—which is a party/stoop sale outside her store, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, on lovely, scenic Kenmare Street. It was a gorgeous day and every cute girl in New York was there. I bought a big blue muumuu with ruffles and embroidered watermelons on it. Oh no, wait, I didn’t buy it, my friend Emily gave it to me for my birthday. Thanks, Emily! It was one of her maternity dresses. It makes me look like a Weeble-Wobble but it’s my new favorite housedress. I wore it to the supermarket yesterday with red slippers and felt breezy and awesome. Anyway, thanks to Leyla and Ben for letting me interview them and for bringing their slice of LA sunshine to our gross, humid, fishy-smelling little town. Yay!

HD-DVD – What to Know About Blu-ray VS HD-DVD Formats

DVDs continue to be the prominent medium for home theater entertainment. The technology is being refined and improved upon by a number of manufacturers, making its future slightly uncertain though it is definitely clear that it will continue is one format or another. Many of you have probably been hearing about Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs and their path as the next generation of DVDs. The discrepancies between the two are confusing many home theater buyers, so it’s important to know just what each of these new technologies has to offer so that you can make an informed decision on what to purchase and when.

Let’s start by discussing just what Blu-ray is. Chances are, if you’ve stepped into any of the leading home theater and electronics stores in the country, you’ve seen Blu-ray discs advertised in the DVD section. In truth, Blu-ray discs are somewhat like traditional DVDs, except that they have the ability to record, rewrite, and playback high definition (HD) video that is compatible with the growing number of HD televisions finding their way into home theaters every year. Unlike traditional DVDs, Blu-ray discs can hold nearly five times as much data. On a single layer disc, they can hold 25GB of data, and 50GB can be stored on a dual layer disc. By being able to hold so much more, Blu-ray discs are able to easily store the advanced information necessary to provide content in HD format.

HD-DVD offers the same technology, though it isn’t able to hold as much information as Blu-ray. Developed by Toshiba and NEC, it is able to hold three times as much data as traditional DVDs. While this may be less than Blu-ray, the data capacity of HD-DVDs still exceeds the amount needed to watch major blockbusters in high-definition. HD-DVD also came out much sooner and was first quoted to be the successor to the standard DVD format. HD-DVD is completely compatible with HD-DVD players, which in turn are compatible with HD televisions. High definition technology is certainly the wave of the future for home entertainment, and HD-DVD was the first disc technology formatted for it.

Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs use a new form of laser that improves on what the standard DVD used. While older, standard DVD models used a red laser to transfer content from disc to player to screen, these two technologies use a blue-violet laser instead. The main benefit with using blue-violet lasers is that they have a shorter wavelength than red lasers. This means that they can be focused with a much higher rate of accuracy.

As you can see the differences between these two formats are very few, In short, Blu-ray is able to hold more information than HD-DVD, but HD-DVD has been around for much longer and still holds an adequate amount for any applications currently in the market. Both formats use blue-violet lasers to better read the information.

The biggest question right now is which format will end up on top. Blu-ray has the added advantage of being backed up by some major players in the movie business. Seven of the eight major Hollywood movie studios have released films in Blu-ray format recently, while five of them are releasing films exclusively on Blu-ray. HD-DVD has the backing of several major consumer electronics manufacturers but does have some ground to make up with the production companies. However, with the added experience of being in production longer and having consumers more familiar with the name, it’s very possible for them to pull ahead. The race to be the top home entertainment format will continue on and the consumer will simply need to wait to see which one wins. In the meantime, players are available for both formats and some manufacturers have players that satisfy both formats available.
