Blair Witch Episode 2: Coffin Rock 1886

Blair Witch Episode 2: Coffin Rock 1886 Just so everyone knows… – Benjamin J. Schultz – Minneapolis, MN
You can pick up all three games, along with both movies and a stickman necklace for around (used, of course). Just run a search for The Blair Witch Experience in DVDs.
Gathering of Developers: This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Please click on our logo above to see over 15,000 titles in stock. Blair Witch Volume 2: The Legend of Coffin Rock is the second of three budget-priced horror games from Gathering of Developers that revisits the woods around Burkittsville and locations from the popular film. This second outing takes us into the past, back to the Civil War in fact, to tell the tale of the five-man search party that was found massacred at Coffin Rock. The game concerns an amnesiac Union officer who awakens as if from the dead. He is named Lazarus by the young girl and her grandmother who find him and nurse him back to health. But the young girl disappears in the woods and the stranger takes it upon himself to find her.

The most interesting thing about Coffin Rock is how it shifts from Lazarus’s search for the girl to the recent past where he’s in the same area seeking out a party of Confederate raiders. You’ll frequently black out after fighting ghosts in the woods and find yourself wearing the blue uniform and leading Union troops into the same woods. It’s an eerie effect that works, yet becomes too predictable to ever become truly scary. But it is evocative of Ambrose Bierce’s eerie Civil War Short Stories.

Where Coffin Rock falls apart a bit is in its interface. The view shifts as you wander around the beautiful maps, you can’t control the camera, and sometimes it stops on an awkward view. This can be terminal when a ghost or wild dog appears and starts tearing at you. It also makes moving around the game a slow affair (even with the “always run” option on). Despite this, the game is extremely short and consists of far more exposition than actual play. Overall, the challenge is only slight and the ending is remarkably disappointing.

Horror games, particularly story-driven thoughtful horror games, are about as rare as can be on the PC. Coffin Rock is a triumph in that regard. It’s also probably a must-have for any Blair Witch fanatic. It expands on the myth and tells the Coffin Rock story in a most interesting way. It may not scare you, and it may ultimately disappoint you, but it will get under your skin and entertain you until then. –Bob Andrews

Pros:

  • Good graphics and great atmosphere
  • Excellent sound
  • Strong, unique, and clever storytelling

Cons:

  • Clumsy controls
  • Too short
  • Bad ending

Railroad Tycoon 3 won’t run on Vista basic. I’ve downloaded four patches and nothing works. Vista will open the game to the menu for a few seconds and then the menu disappears and a message appears that says, in effect, the game won’t run. Big bummer.

Rune (Mac)

Rune (Mac) This game is haunting me – in a good way! – E. Harris – San Francisco, CA United States
I got this game and began playing and did not instantly like it – put it away and then months later, after I had let Max Payne become a memory I played it again. I played it three times in all – once at each level. That is unusual for me. I play a game once, rarely twice and I move on. Not this game. I sold my copy a few months ago and I can STILL hear the little grunts and growls of the goblins in my head, the clank of the sword. I enjoyed all the bad guys, the little puzzles, the timed runs even the nasty vegetation. This game has so many levels, so many different little worlds… I confess I miss it horribly and want to play again. And again. I wish I had never played it so I could play it for the first time. I wish they would make an advanced version for the Mac so I could keep playing it! So, I am buying for the second time. This is a winning game in my book. Better than any other I have played.
Gathering of Developers: This third-person action/adventure game is steeped in Norse mythology. Players assume the role of Ragnar the Viking, mightiest warrior of a bygone age. In an age when might makes right, it is Ragnar who doles out justice on the blade of his massive battle-axe. Players explore beautiful settings both above and below the mountains of the far north as Ragnar fights his way through several stunning and unique kingdoms to an ultimate confrontation with the Sark Amen, the shadowy warrior-masters of the netherworld.

Rune is a third-person perspective game of intense action and adventure steeped in a blend of Norse mythology and high fantasy. Players have to use their brains as well as their massive brawn to survive as they explore the fully 3D game world fighting off fantastic creatures from both Norse legend and the fertile minds of the Human Head staff with their array of swords, axes and magical devices.

The game focused on equal parts melee combat and exploration, with levels ranging from a Viking town to the caverns of the Dwarves to a city in the mountains. Players have access to a array of melee weapons based both in fact and fantasy as Ragnar delves deeper into the realms of myth and further from his old reality.

Rune included a full single-player game as well as several specially designed multiplayer levels that allow players to cooperate or compete as Ragnar or another Viking warrior. The multiplayer game also included special handicap and team modes to widen the multiplayer experience.

System Requirements:  (MAC only)

  • MAC OS 8.1
  • PCI PowerMac (including IMac 2nd generation machine)
  • Hardware Accelerated 3D video card (supporting OpenGL) – 6MB or better
  • RAM: 64MB
  • CD-ROM; 4x
  • Disk Space: 400MB
  • Supports Internet Connection (TCP/IP – 28.8Kbp)

Combine the Unreal Tournament 3-D engine with hard-nosed Viking melee combat and what do you get? You get Rune, an epic third-person action game from Human Head Studios. You take on the role of Ragnar, a young warrior spared from death by Odin but who must fight his own way up from the underworld to defend his village and exact revenge upon the dark Vikings who killed his father.

Set in grim, exceptionally well-designed environments ranging from ancient crypts full of undead warriors to a towering mechanical Dwarven city, Rune mixes typical first-person shooter gameplay with the rigors of close-quarter melee combat. Instead of the shotguns and rocket launchers you’ve mastered in other games, you will find yourself armed only with an array of swords, hammers, and axes in Rune. Combat with these weapons is very different–and very challenging, particularly in the game’s latter levels and against multiple opponents.

The graphics in Rune are excellent, with an exceptional attention to detail on just about every level. The lighting is very well done and so are the sound effects used throughout the game. The music is suitably heroic, though it plays too infrequently and loops too quickly. Overall, the game does a marvelous job of setting the mood for head-smashing Viking combat. There are even some nifty gameplay twists that keep you in the proper frame of mind. When you’re wounded, for example, you can drink mead, scarf down a leg of mutton, or grab and eat a lizard off any nearby wall to gain some health back. And when Ragnar is done drinking his mead, he smashes the cup on the floor. He deals with crates, barrels, and many doors in his path the same way.

While the single-player game is outstanding–and features one of the flat-out coolest game-won reward sequences ever–the multiplayer action is where you can really test your sword-fighting skills. Although the game includes 43 single-player levels and only seven multiplayer maps, Rune has proven to be quite popular online, with up to 16 players going at it in wild melee combat.

The only disappointment in Rune may be the fact that it does not offer any computer-controlled bots for solo deathmatch play. Even without the bots, Rune is easily one of the year’s top games in any genre and an intense epic that no action fan should be without. –Michael Ryan

Pros:

  • Intense melee action using the Unreal Tournament engine
  • Epic story line set in the land of Vikings and Nordic mythology
  • Excellent level design, with impressive attention to detail
  • Great graphics, sound, and music

Cons:

  • An occasional AI flaw will halt action on some levels
  • No bots for multiplayer mode

Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes

Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes Gathering of Developers: This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Please click on our logo above to see over 15,000 titles in stock. Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: orcs and ogres battle against humans and elves in a war for ultimate domination of a fantasy kingdom. It’s not the most original premise for a game, but Kingdom Under Fire does try to innovate. The game diverges from similar titles like the WarCraft series in that it really makes an attempt to meld two distinct types of gameplay. On the one hand it tries to be a real-time strategy game, with buildings to be built, technology trees to climb, and epic battles to fight. One the other hand it tries to be a role-playing game, with heroes to develop, quests to complete, and plenty of scripted events to further the plot line. There are main characters that carry over from mission to mission, and if they die the game ends. This adds a strategic element that most games of this type lack, and the missions are designed to take full advantage of this twist.

Kingdom Under Fire‘s disparate elements would make for a memorable game if each was executed properly, but execution is precisely where the game falls short. It suffers from graphical glitches and horrible voice acting that do little to draw players in. It also has few of the conventions that gamers have come to expect from real-time strategy games, such as combat formations and the ability to select and control an unlimited number of units. The pathfinding is terrible, as units often get stuck on some impassible terrain and must be guided by hand where you want them to go. This is frustrating under normal circumstances, let alone during a heated battle.

Kingdom Under Fire tries hard to be a great game, but the designers should have shed the tired theme and polished the gameplay if they wanted it to meet modern expectations. –T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Terrific mission design
  • Role-playing elements add strategic considerations to this otherwise tactical game

Cons:

  • Poor production values
  • Can’t select an unlimited number of units

Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 (Mac)

Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 (Mac) Gathering of Developers: Description
Set in the extremely rich universe of the popular film, Heavy Metal, FAKK2 allows you to assume the role of Julie. Based on the most advanced modification of the Quake3 engine as of now, the game will feature vast, expansive and organic terrains with tremendous attention to details. Julie will be able to hold (not carry) two types of weapons at a time, and this should allow for some interesting variations — for example, in multiplay, whether you use a sword-shield combo or an Uzi combo will affect the way you play. Anyway, among the recent influx of third-person shooters, this seems to be one of the most impressive.

“In Heavy Metal you take on the role of F.A.K.K.2, a legendary hero of the multi-verse. Take her on a journey of unimaginable proportions where death and danger lie in the most unsuspecting corners of a world you have to see to believe. Only a story straight from the pages of Heavy Metal could give you the goods like F.A.K.K. 2 does. GITH is coming and he wants you!”

Mac OS 8.6-OS 9.2.2 to Mac OS X 10.0 (not compatible with 10.1 or 10.2) F.A.K.K.2 is a universal warning to all Federation deep-space navigators, indicating a dangerous biohazard where life enters and only death remains. F.A.K.K.2 is also the name of a world so sublime, with a secret so great, that only the most terrifying classification could keep the spoilers away. F.A.K.K.2 is also a woman who has assumed the name of the world she cherished, when that name alone could no longer protect her tranquil paradise from greed, cruelty, and annihilation. With vengeance in her soul, love in her heart, and two fully automatic, four-barreled blasters in her hands, F.A.K.K.2 is a ravishing avenger on a deadly mission. A steel-eyed huntress and expert warrior, F.A.K.K.2 fights with a single purpose: she will not rest until she’s freed her sister from the ruthless, power-hungry monster who abducted her when he ravaged their majestic planet and stole its greatest secret.

The game’s story picks up where the movie leaves off. You control F.A.K.K.2, who must now defend her home world from invasion by a Borg-like collective known as GITH Industries. GITH is an ugly megalomaniac who wants to dominate the universe and either possess or decimate everything that lives and breathes. He has been motoring around the galaxy in a spaceship strapped to a conquered, decimated planet. The company is looking for an upgrade and has discovered Julia’s world. F.A.K.K.2 is the only thing that stands between GITH and total control of the universe. Time for our heroine to break out the four-barreled blasters again.

The game is played in a third-person perspective with equal parts action and adventure. Among its key features are dynamic environments, visible damage, and two-handed combat.
