Kris Kristofferson is one of the all time greats and deserves to be up there on the same lofty peak as Lennon and McCartney, Ray Davies, Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan (at his best). His lyrics are never cliche and while he may not be the greatest singer what he lacks in voice he makes up for in passion and passion is what has driven him over the years. Yes, I’m a fan of Kris Kristofferson and disappointed he doesn’t make the trip south to Melbourne (Australia) more often however this album is similar to The Beatles ‘Anthology’ series. The rough and the ready and it is just wonderful listening to hear songs in their early stages and knowing how many of them became so much better over time.

This album is one for the fans more than the person looking for a hit or something out of this world. What you hear is an artist at work and a great one at that. We can only hope that the album is just the first of this type. There is a good booklet containing background to the songs and some photos we’ve not seen before or rarely. Hopefully Kris will add to this album with the written story of his life.

While we shouldn’t forget his vast commercial accomplishments as an award-winning recording artist and actor, it’s these soul-stirring demos that laid the groundwork for his rough and tumble creative journey. Drop the needle and be transported into the intimate candle lit studio session like a fly on the wall.
