Reaching Everest Base Camp is an adventure that begins with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to the mountain runway at Lukla. Landing conditions are unpredictable at best with low lying clouds, winds, and snow or rain. Knowing this makes the rooftops of Lukla with their fluttering prayer flags a welcome sight and any safe landing a good landing.

The first two days of walking are along green slopes of pine forest, during which you will cross the churning Dudh Kosi river more than once on high suspension bridges. This part of the trek is more than a nature walk it is a cultural trek as well. You will pass numerous stupas and long mani walls comprised of hundreds of stones etched with the Buddhist prayer “Om Mani Padme Hum.” You’ll also walk through tiny villages cultivating healthy looking vegetables finally reaching the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar at 11,286 feet. Already at this point you are at an elevation higher than Mount Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak.

Namche Bazaar is a large village which sits in the shadow of Kwongde and Kwongde Ri, two white covered peaks. The market held weekly is positively bustling and provides for great people watching. Old women in traditional dress sit beside baskets of vegetables they’ve been carrying for a couple of days to sell; men in fur-lined hats pour dried beans and flour from ornate measuring cups; those with stronger stomachs may want to venture into the meat area to watch the butchers at work. Make sure not to miss the two small museums which contain interesting information about the Sherpa way of life and the Everest Region in general.

It’s a good idea to spend the day after you reach Namche Bazaar acclimatizing. On this day “off” consider hiking to the villages of Khunde and Khumding with their fascinating mix of old and new. Many mountaineering organizations have provided funding for local development which is why you’ll find a hospital and a school with modern computer lab sitting amidst houses outside which laundry is being washed on the rocks and pats of yak dung are drying on the walls for fuel. But the real highlight of your highlight of your day will be a visit to the Japanese ‘Everest View Hotel’ which provides a clear view of the top of the world’s highest peak.

On day four you could move on to Tengboche, which at 12,664 feet is only 115 feet short of Montana’s highest mountain, Granite Peak. Tea houses provide pleasant lodging in Tengboche and the views of Everest are awe inspiring. You’ll be able to pick out the shapes of Ama Dablam and Kangtega, and the looming bulk of Thamsherku. In the evening consider moving from the hypnotic atmosphere outdoors to another trancelike state indoors by sitting in the gompa’s prayer room as the monks chant.

Day 5 begins early with the sound of the gongs and trumpets from the gompa, and endsin at Dingboche 14,107 which is higher than the highest mountains in Wyoming, Nevada and Utah. Here you will be greeted by a phenomenal view of Nuptse and Lhotse, but Ama Dablam steals the show.

It would not be a bad idea to spend days 6 and 7 here to acclimatize before ascending higher. While based here you may wish to climb the nearby peak of Chukkung Ri. Just be aware that it rises 18,044 feet above sea level. On top you will be greeted by a phenomenal panoramic view, but it can also be phenomenally cold. Though a bit ambitious for an acclimatization hike, if you do this the first day you will have a full day of rest before setting off again.

On day seven you’ll climb up to the ridge above Tughkla where you’ll be met by stone memorials to climbers lost on Everest before moving on to Loboche at 16,076 feet.

Finally, day 9 brings you to Base Camp day assuming the weather is good. You’ll set off on the rocky trail to Gorakshep expect your pace to slow as you ascend. Since you will be sleeping at Gorakshep on you way back down you can deposit bags for a lighter climb for the last couple of hours.

You’ll likely find that from here to Everest Base Camp is the toughest part of the Three hours of ups and downs, finishing on a section of glacier. You become aware of how much the environment has changed over the past days from the green plots and coniferous forests around Phakding and Namche up to this wild emptiness where the only signs of life are a few hardy birds, yaks and the other humans. Eventually the orange specks in the distance turn into tents and then you reach the prayer flags.

Day 10 is when you will get your best view of Everest. Get up early, very early if you want to see the sun rise over Mount Everest. Walk up to the viewpoint at Kala Pathar at 18372 feet which from Gorakshep will likely take you under 2 hours and it’s worth it.

The climb up may take 10 long days, but getting back takes just 3 and a bit. Downhill most of the way and an abundance of oxygen increasing all the time the reverse trip can feel quite easy. Before you know it your big trek is over and you’re back in Kathmandu.

3 Simple Steps to Improve Your Relationship With Your Horse

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Would you like to have a better relationship with your horse? Because horse people “love” their horses, they want to feel like their horses love them back. If you want unconditional love from an animal, get a dog. Humans and dogs have a more similar social organization than horses. Horses don’t want your love. They want safety and security. They need to be able to trust and respect their herd mates, and particularly the herd leader – the alpha – to provide safety for the entire herd. Here are 3 simple steps you can take to gain your horse’s respect, build the foundation for trust and become your horse’s herd leader.

1. Awareness – Develop constant awareness of yourself, your horse and your environment. In the wild, horses’ survival depends upon their level of awareness. As prey animals, they need to be aware predators before they are too close. The top horse in the herd is the most aware horse. Not the biggest or the strongest. The most aware of potential danger so that she can tell the rest of the herd to move. The herd communicates through body language. When the alpha horse says there is danger and it’s time to move, there is no dispute or discussion.

2. Boundaries – Set appropriate boundaries that tell your horse where not to go. Horses do not pull each other around, they push each other. The horse that pushes another horse into a boundary is the better horse. A horse pushed into a boundary cannot run away. Not a good place to be for a prey animal. Use “contact” to create boundaries that tell your horse where not to go. Whether working with your horse in a halter or bridle, leading, lunging or riding, contact through the rope or reins creates boundaries. Respect your horse’s personal space (the head and neck) and ask that she respect yours. The alpha horse does not get bitten or kicked, pushed or blocked by any other horse in the herd. The alpha horse can go anywhere, take the best food, drinks first and all without challenge or question. If your horse nips you, threatens to lift her foot to kick or strike, pushes you with her head or shoulder, leans into you or pins her ears when you go into her stall, she is not seeing you as her trusted leader.

3. Consistency – Horse’s feel secure when the rules stay the same and they know what to expect. Whether you on the ground or in the saddle, apply the same rules every time you are with your horse. Horses are reading us as soon as they can see us not just when we are working with them. They don’t know that we don’t know their language. If we don’t make sense to them they will tune us out, push us around or be terribly insecure and flighty around us.

Riding starts with ground work. Your relationship with your horse starts the moment your horse can see you. They don’t miss a thing. In the wild, their survival depends on their level of awareness of their herd mates, their ability to communicate through body language and their awareness of their environment. If you want to develop a better relationship with your horse, start applying these 3 simple steps – Awareness, Boundaries and Contact – and you will create a trusting and respectful relationship. Your horse will love you for it.

Horses – One Of The World’s Greatest Animal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Animals are created to bring more color to the world. They are here for a purpose and that is to help people with their needs. They are major sources of meat and are also a major source of warmth and happiness. Before, some of the animals were used as a means of transportation since there were still no cars for them to use whenever they travel. Camels, horses and donkeys are just few of the most used animals for transportation and they have contributed greatly to the lives of our ancestors.

The swift and powerful horse is also being used by human beings as a draft animal during warfare. Their power and speed is what makes them very useful the same as that of a tazer gun which is very useful when it comes to capturing criminals because of its speed and efficiency. As you can see in epic movies, they had to use the horse during war since they can easily attack and kill the attackers. The riding of horses was not practical until suitable bits and other controlling devices were invented. They were only able to help farm labor when harness was already created.

Today, horses are used primarily for sports such as horse racing, horse show competitions, rodeos and simple riding for pleasure and enjoyment. You can train them in becoming one of the great and fast horses there is. Many enjoy watching a horse race and some even bet a large amount of money to the fastest horse on the track. This has been a form of fun and exciting activity to the people.

The horse is a large herbivore which is adapted for running. When they are out in the wild, they use and depend on their keen senses and their speed for survival. Their senses of smell and hearing are superior to those of humans. Their long neck places the large eyes up where they are able to see and easily survey the horizon for any danger. The horse’s wide set eyes have a broad field of vision to the side and even to the rear. That is why during horse race, they wear protection to their eyes so they will not get distracted and stay focused on the track.

The long and the slender lower legs bearing weight on a single toe plus the heavily muscled upper legs makes the horse to run fast. The speed of the horse is remarkable and researchers have found theories that were based on the speed or velocity of the horse the same as how remarkable the speed of air tazer is when used for self defense. The great lung capacity of horses also increases their endurance.

There is less worry with regards to the food of this type of animal because they are naturally born as grass eaters. They love to eat hay so you really need not to worry about their food when you plan of taking care of one. Horses are good pets. You can trust them and are very reliable in any type of work provided that you have trained them and given them the proper care that they deserve.

Best Car Wax

When you’re looking to wax up your car this upcoming summer, or maybe you’re wanting to do it in the near future, how the heck do you find the best car wax for your car? I want to show the steps that I take in order to find what’s best for me, and my car.

Since I like to clean my car myself, it’s always essential that I get what’s best for my car. What you’re going to find out is that if you get too cheap with your wax, you’re going to get a cheap look. A cheaper wax will generally leave streaks, or it will look “dirty”, since the streaks won’t wear away if you don’t do it right.

Now, when you want to find the best car wax, here’s what you do…

You will find want to hop online. Head to your favorite retailer / auto parts shop. The kicker here is to make sure that the store has a rating system. The reason you will want a rating system is because you will want to see what other people think of it. Does it have a good review? If so, you may want to consider it.

It’s also best to Google search the images as well. I love looking at the before, and after pictures. It gives me a great idea on what the car can look like.

Here are some brands that I recommend…

Turtle Wax

Black Magic

Mother’s California

Try these 3 waxes out, as well as check out my tips to see if you can find one that works for you!

How to Repair Car Windows

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Some people think that learning how to repair car windows is a tad technical. However, it is possible to learn the do it yourself job and even grow to be proficient in it. Taking over this activity and doing it satisfactorily will go a long way in boosting your self-esteem and of course, saving money. Other related duties require that you just be sure of your competency before embarking on the project however with the car window repair, you’ll be able to simply embark on it right away. The first step will involve you cleansing up the repair area. It should ideally be concrete as that is simple to clean up. If a concrete surface isn’t available, it is advisable to lay a tarp before proceeding.

The primary tangible step to repair the window is to make sure that you have the correct tools. These could be found lying around the house e.g. screwdrivers, painter’s cloth and a masking tape. Next, take away or undo the armrest and door handle. The inside panel will certainly come next. This part is expertly held all rounds with screws. Next, to be taken care of will be the moisture barrier. This element requires extreme caution. It is likely to be fixed with tape, screws or even clips. It’s crucial that you just take your time while undoing this. Any rapture or tear with this will lead to a complex problem, which can mean extra money for further repairs.

With this safely off, the next part will be the actual door. That is the primary stage in repairing car window that may involve you meeting the actual glass that is broken. This step is essential and it requires that you simply be very careful because the glass might injure you if not properly handled. It is very unwise to be aggressive. Ensure you take away all the massive glass shards before vacuuming out the minute ones. As soon as everything is clean and good to go, now you can bring in the new glass window. Ensure you set the glass window correctly on the track. The glass is held into place by a plug or a pin.

It is best to then maneuver the window down or up as soon as you are certain it is correctly set. It will guarantee you of its proper working. In the case of repairing car windows, there is no assumptions and you need to be sure that everything is done based on the set procedure. The subsequent step will be to make sure that the components are put back in reverse order i.e. the barrier now comes first, the panel, armrest and eventually the door handle. After the set up of every piece, you need to once again take a look at the car window to be sure of its perfect working.

The final step to repair window is to make sure that all damaged pieces of glass are cleaned off to avoid injury. It will ultimately mark the end of a truly nice and fun filled learning experience.

Wall Street to Main Street: News, Views and Commentary: May 25, 2006

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It’s Thursday May 25, 2006, and yesterday presented the debut of Vonage (NYSE: VG) on the New York Stock Exchange and a pin was put in the balloon. The stock was priced at $17, the first trade, which was done by the CEO, kicked off the debut. Shortly after that first trade the stock began to tumble a bit and at the end of the day it closed $14.85 down from its debut price.

Some attribute this to investor fears as the IPO was marked as oversubscribed but as we mentioned yesterday the reason for the oversubscription was that Vonage put aside a piece of the IPO for some of their loyal customers. This is the first pure play in the Voip arena and investors are probably just trying to get their arms around this one. Even though Vonage has lost money since inception they have been ramping up their customer base over the past 12 months while companies like Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) have jumped in headfirst.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) was upgraded to a Buy by Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER) analyst John Murphy and he gave GM a price target of $37. This was and still is our turnaround situation for 2006 on Wall Street to Main Street since the $19 range. The company is trimming the fat across the board and they are in survival mode which looks to be what will make this turnaround happen sooner than later. This is an American Icon that we are speaking about, with Toyota (NYSE: TM) and Honda (NYSE: HMC) expanding globally you can bet that this is just adding fuel to the fire that is burning deep within the driving forces of GM, the team of Rick Wagoner and Jerry York seems to be key. We also should let you know that GM is looking to re-launch the Camaro, the muscle car that was discontinued to compete with Fords (NYSE: F) popular Mustang.

CBS (NYSE: CBS) and radio shock jock Howard Stern who defected to Sirius Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) have reached a settlement. CBS filed a lawsuit against Stern citing that while he was on the air that he misappropriated millions of dollars of airtime promoting Sirius. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed as of yet but it’s a victory for CBS. Sirius shares have slide over the past several months going from the $7 range to below $4 a share. The initial boost to the stock in anticipation of Howard Stern’s arrival has faded and now it’s all about the content. Although Stern met his enrollment mark and got paid handsomely for that, he actually only brought over a portion of his former listener base. So where is Sirius headed? Unless they develop content that is so compelling that listeners cannot do without it they are at a standstill. XM Satellite (NASDAQ: XMSR) even went to the point of placing one of their programs on traditional radio to keep listeners interested and that stock has also fallen from grace.

Movers and Shakers

Some major movers in yesterday trading session include Payless Shoes (NYSE: PSS) which traded up $3.77 to close at $24.65, General Motors (NYSE: GM) which traded up $2.03 to close at $26.51, Dycom Industries (NYSE: DY) traded up $1.28 to close at $21.19, DreamWorks Animation (NYSE: DWA) traded up $1.51 to close at $27.10, Ansoft Corp (NASDAQ: ANST) traded up $2.04 to close at $20.57, AngioDynamics (NASDAQ: ANGO) traded up $2.50 to close at $26.57, and Daktronics (NASDAQ:DAKT) which traded up $3.86 to close at $44.36.

Downers

Due to market conditions we found it necessary to make our readers/listeners aware of companies that have been taking a little spanking, some of these stocks may be at a discount but you need to do your research, look at the charts and make sure that nothing fundamentally has changed with the company and whether it is just being dragged by the market or not. There are companies that are actually a slave to the Dow and present buying opportunities.

Some stocks that traded down yesterday include Perdigao (NYSE: PDA) which traded down against yesterday as the stock fell an additional $1.54 to close at $15.20. Yesterday we told you that PDA stated the tremendous drop in export revenues and that is affecting the stock today. The 52 week low is $12.88 and its on its way there unless something material changes its direction but a 22% drop in exports revenue is significant. Over the month of May the stock has come down from a high of $23.89 and dropping.

Meridian Gold (NYSE: MDG) dropped $2.59 to close at $29.14, it has come off a high of $36.69 which it hit on May 10, 2006. Now this run to $36.99 is attributed to rising Gold prices as well as other precious metals, but as Gold prices drop, as do the stocks that mine the precious metal. The stock may have a slight bounce but it will more than likely drop down a few more points before it starts some upward movement. It broke its potential base of $29.36 and unless something material happens with the company then you have to look at gold prices and the trading pattern of the stock. The next downward stop could be $28.00, if it breaks that level then it may trade down as low as $25. So if you are in this one you need to be very in tune to the company and the industry at this point.

The Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE) dropped again yesterday, it traded down $4.63 to close at $54.31. It may slip down another point or so before it begins to work its way back up. The stock has been free falling since May 11, 2006 when it traded as high as $79.17 so we may be basing out in the $53 to $54 range. Keep in mind that the run to $79 started in the $53 range, so a bounce from there would not be a shock.

Libbey (NYSE: LBY) continues to slide, the stock shaved off another $$1.51 to close at $12.24 in yesterdays trading session. It broke through its support base and unless something material happens with the company it could very well slide to the single digits. The last support based was $12.94 and it broke that on the downside.

Other stocks that traded down yesterday include Midway Games (NYSE: MWY) which traded down 92 cents to close at $8.95, NorthStar Neuroscience (NASDAQ: NSTR) traded down $2.02 to close at $13.48, Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC) traded down $1.76 to close at $15.17, Escala Group (NASDAQ: ESCL) a stock that fell from grace is now a dead cat bouncing as it closed at $7.57 down 87 cents and Home Solutions America (AMEX: HOM) traded down $1.24 to close at $11.96.

Analyst Upgrades/Downgrades

Recent Analyst upgrades include General Motors (NYSE: GM) which was upgraded to a Buy by Merrill Lynch, eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) was upgraded to an Overweight from a Neutral Weight by Prudential Equity Group, Imperial Tobacco (NYSE: ITY) was upgraded to a Buy from a Neutral by UBS, Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) was upgraded to a Buy from a Neutral by Banc of America Securities, KLA-Tencor (NASDAQ: KLAC) received a bump up from Banc of America as they upgraded the stock from a Sell to a Hold, Harbor Florida Bancshares (NASDAQ: HARB) was upgraded to a Buy from a Neutral by Janney Montgomery Scott, and GSI Commerce (NASDAQ: GSIC) was upgraded to a Buy from a Hold by Stifel Nicolaus.

Smart Cars – The Future of Road Safety?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you have ever seen movies that depict cars that essentially drive themselves, real life may be imitating art sooner than you think. Cars are becoming more intelligent in assessing dangers, enhancing our ability to react and protecting passengers when an accident is likely. As engineers create new ways to protect us on the road, crash and even injury avoidance is becoming front and center in new car designs.

Human error and our inability to react to impending crashes is a major factor in the 40,000 plus deaths attributed to car accidents every year. Car manufacturers are designing on board systems to increase our response time, enhance our ability to see potential dangers and intervene when the vehicle is put into situations that increase the percentage of having an accident.

One example of this new concept; Designing a system designed to alert the driver if a pedestrian crossing the road is in danger of being hit. Another system application could apply the brakes if the computer perceives that the car is about to run a red light. These “Smart Safety Sensing Technologies”, provide immediate information to the vehicle computer and allow the overall system to respond before the driver could react.

If a crash is imminent, some car companies will go into “Occupant Survival Mode”. Mercedes TM for instance has a new technology design called “Pre-Safe” that engages in preparation of a perceived crash. All windows will immediately close, seat belts will tighten and the front seats will immediately adjust for maximum airbag protection.

Another safety concept called “Gaze Detection” is designed to automatically read facial expressions and eye movement through an on board camera. If the system detects an object in the path of the vehicle at the same time your eyes are looking elsewhere, a warning signal triggers drawing your attention to the object to be avoided.

If you are one of millions of older individuals who have trouble with night driving, you know how difficult it can be to identify and avoid a potential roadway threat; whether it be road debris or an animal standing in the path of the car. To solve this some car makers are installing infrared sensors to detect objects several hundred feet ahead. This information would be transmitted to a dashboard monitor enabling a much better view of the road ahead, thereby giving the driver extra visibility and reaction time if needed. This device alone could save many people from accidents involving deer or other animals across the country.

Cars will also be able to transmit information to other cars via new Intelligent Transportation Systems, allowing information on possible dangerous road conditions or traffic accidents that may have just occurred.

Who knows, the ultimate in safety would be to eliminate the human factor altogether, by giving complete control to the on board computer. Driving as we know it would be replaced by the mundane task of telling your vehicle where you want to go and waking you when you get there…

Enduro racing is the ultimate entry level auto-racing opportunity. For less that $1000, you can build a great enduro car, go racing, and have a blast.

What is an enduro? An enduro is an auto-racing survival event. You are packed onto a racetrack with over 100 other cars and let loose.

No caution flags fly during an enduro and the race is only stopped in the event of a fire, a rollover, or should the track become blocked with wreckage.

Enduro races started out as a way to let regular folks try auto-racing without building a very expensive weekly racer. These races have become more and more popular and are now starting to pay the winners up to $5000.

Back several years ago, it was common for people to run junks in the enduros. You would see some cars make it just a few laps before they broke. With the money that’s being paid out these days, serious racers are building race cars specifically for running these enduros and are collecting some nice payouts during the summer.

Where can you find an enduro race? Here in Central Vermont, we can visit several tracks within just a couple of hours from us.

Thunder Road in Barre, VT hosts an Annual Enduro 200. This race is held in July or August on a Sunday night. This is my favorite track to drive on. The 2009 Enduro 200 will be the 25th Annual and is going to pay $5000 to the winner!

Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT hosts several enduro races throughout the year. These are shorter events that pay $50 to the winner. Bear Ridge is a little clay track out in the boonies of Vermont. It’s a fun track to drive on.

Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH hosts several enduros throughout the year. Highlights at this track are the Frostbite 400 held in October, and the Pre-Hangover 150 held on New Years! The Frostbite 400 is a blast to drive in!

Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY. This half mile track is fast! They hold an annual Enduro 200 in the late summer. I have yet to drive on this track but I am looking forward to it.

If you’re looking for some great family entertainment, or you would like to experience auto-racing for yourself without making a huge financial commitment, enduro racing is for you. Come on out this summer and enjoy an enduro race.

Teens Learn by Experience

In Indianapolis, Indiana, teen drivers were seen skidding around a local high school parking lot. Were they joyriding? Not this time. These teens were taking part in a safe driving program called Tire Rack Street Survival which was being hosted by the Hoosier Chapter of the BMW Club of America.

Sixty teens were put through a battery of tests that included acceleration, turning and braking that were designed to give them experience and increase their level of response to the demands of driving that they might encounter in their own cars.

Because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these activities are valuable. In addition to this the single-vehicle at-fault accident rate plunges by a whopping 90 percent after taking this course.

After the program, the teens who took part in the one-day event found that the experience helped them to realize the power that they have in their hands when they drive and the situations that can arise unexpectedly and how to deal with them.

Another method of helping teens that should also be implemented by families is to place a GPS Tracking device in the cars that they drive. Why?

Increased Safety Awareness

When drivers know that they are being monitored, it changes their behavior. This is true not just for teen drivers, but all those who get behind the wheel of a car. There is less chance of a lack of judgment which can help prevent accidents.

Increased Driver Accountability

Accountability is a character quality that young drivers need to learn. They are responsible for their actions which can have deadly consequences when they are driving.

Instead of ignoring teen driver issues, a proactive approach like this one along with closer monitoring will help bring the incident of teen vehicle accidents to a very low rate. And isn’t that worth the effort? Think about that the next time you hear about another teen killed in an automobile accident.

You can visit streetsurvival.org or call 502-649-4871 to sign up for one of these programs near you. Any licensed driver between 16 and 21 years of age can take part. The cost is $60. The lasting effect is priceless.
