Michener uses the unifying device of an archeological dig at a fictional site in Israel to probe the history of the region from beginnings of agriculture to modern times (as of the book’s writing, though now nearly 50 years behind). However, I for one failed to fall in love with it as much as so many other people have.

It is interesting, but the persistent theme is the development of humanity’s view of religion. I personally thought it was perhaps a little simplified, but that probably couldn’t be helped.

I do say that it’s given me a much deeper and broader understanding of the area, and of the history of the Jews, than I had previously. I’m not entirely certain of the accuracy of everything, but I’m sure I do have a better overall context.

For example, I never dreamed that before it was conquered by the Roman Empire, that Israel was run by the Greeks, and that Greek ideals were at one time the outside influence the orthodox battled to keep their religion. Somehow I’d thought that between the end of the exile in the desert and being conquered by the Romans that the Jews controlled Israel, and that’s not true at all.

Some of the stories seem to be kind of a whitewash. There’s a proto-Moses figure who comes out of the desert and moves into the nearest town nonviolently. However, the real heirs of Moses did not seem to wrestle with the concept of nonviolence. God gave them Jericho and then the rest of the area, so they conquered the Canaanites by force and that was that.

It also filled in some of the gaps regarding Jews after Christianity began. I’ve always been hazy on how they were driven from Israel into Europe.

Some of it has me shaking my head. Michener seems to praise the effort by Jewish holy men compiling a huge set of laws called the Talmud. I just couldn’t believe it. What a waste of time and effort. I’m sure they needed some laws, especially dietary restrictions, in the desert. But add huge layers of bureaucracy?

Michener makes some social commentary on the current (back then) state of Israel and the Jews, including an implication criticizing the refugee status of Palestinians who left in 1948. I’m sure he’d be appalled at the lack of progress in their situation since then.

However, his look at the ignorance and cruelty of the Crusaders is enlightening. I have to believe that when he pictures them killing local Jews before setting out to free the Holy Land, and then once they get there, killing local Christians who tried to join them, because they were dressed the same as local Muslims, is pertinent.

As I write, Iran is itching for a military showdown with Isreal and Helen Thomas is being chastised for telling Jews to leave “Palestine” and go back to their homes in Germany and Poland. These events make it obvious this region of the world is still a dangerous one full of extreme emotions that are not likely to calm down soon.

Human beings always seek outside of themselves that which resides within: “I kept reaching around for you, but you were inside my hand.” (Rumi)

Inside everyone, as if stored in the “deep freeze” of the unconscious mind, is any potential we have failed to actualize in our waking lives. We are all, to some degree, “failure to thrive” adults. Dreams are one profound tool that access these untapped resources. Dream images birth into our awareness the talents, capacities and energies stored within us. One extraordinary case made this abundantly clear.

June S. began exploring her dreams at age 68, when she was markedly declining. Her early dreams excavated the interior forces active in the present and eventually addressed her earliest roots. Her childhood in the deserts of Utah was rugged. Her sister did not survive childhood… and many parts of June did not either! Various non-essential qualities and their attendant life-force simply did not emerge from the unconscious.

After several years of intensive dream work, June reported a dream that changed her life–and my own understanding of dreams: June is holding three babies and is feeling a radiant joy filling her heart as she cradles and loves and adores these three infants. “Probably, to see if you’re a vegetarian yet,” by which I meant, that this new energy is not to be consumed directly and applied to more of whatever projects the ego already intends. It is new life meant to grow on its own terms.

I had no idea what this remarkable dream foreshadowed, and I have never seen another case so dramatically clear, though this process is very common in dreams. It is why late bloomers benefit so much from the midwifery of dream interpretation.

Within a year of this dream June called to tell me she was having a bit of a “problem:” while her peers were growing visibly older by the month, she was growing visibly younger. And gaining more energy and more enthusiasm and was developing new interests she had never had. She made it clear she would be happy to cope with this new “problem” however long it continued!

I lost track of June for several years, but got occasional reports when she resumed dating (and affiliated activities she had assumed were long extinct). I remember her joking about how all the “middle-agers” would tire from dancing (she was taking lessons) and from partying (she was giving lessons) long before her energy ran down. Then she returned to school to study mystical and spiritual topics and writing and poetry and art.

Next I heard she had completed the 400 mile peace march across Russia! When she started her Sunday evening poetry salons I attended and was amazed that her energy and life force had continued to strengthen for years after the famous “3 babies” dream which she marked as the turning point in her transformation. It seemed that three separate one year old aspects of her psychic energy had been “averaged in” with her 70+ year old self, resulting in reverse aging. Too bad Ponce de Leon died seeking the fountain in Florida, when it was within, all along.

Virtually every cutting-edge lecture or performance I attended for years revealed June S. well ahead of me in line or already seated somewhere in the front row. I remember telling her at a Robert Bly lecture, the best thing I could do to further my spiritual education would be to steal her daytimer.

When I last saw June she was in her eighties and still so full of life and enthusiasm and playfulness, I could not believe this was the deteriorating 68 year old I had met, long ago. I now know that unlived potentials reside within every person. Whenever we fail to thrive, we store that life force, and if we do the work to reclaim it, we find ourselves as poet David Whyte says, “growing younger each day toward death.”

John McCain and his love for the government nanny state has struck once again. Now because Mr. McCain and many other politicians are not capable of exhibiting self control your bumper sticker might land you a letter of admonishment or worse from Big Daddy government. Why are you laughing? Oh ye of little faith in our power hungry bureaucrats! Do you not know the lengths to which our politicians will go to shred the Constitution and our basic rights as Americans?

Kirk Shelmerdine, formerly one of NASCAR’s greatest crew chiefs and since turned struggling driver, has already been attacked by government bureaucrats empowered by Mr. McCain. You see, Mr. Shelmerdine is not exactly a driver who has sponsors falling over themselves to plaster their brand name on his racecar. He is perpetually at the back of the pack in any race he manages to qualify for and about the only time the cameras or the crowd even look at him is when he is getting lapped by the race leader.

Overall he is not what we would call a “good investment” if you know what I mean.

So during the 2004 race season and during the last Presidential election he decided to slap a Bush/Cheney 2004 bumper sticker on his race car to fill up some of the empty space. Well that was simply too much for one Sydnor Thompson! Comrade Thompson, as he shall now be known, simply could not deal with someone else practicing their free speech. So he filed a complaint which basically boiled down to how dare Mr. Shelmerdine be allowed to do use the first amendment.

The FEC graciously spared Mr. Shelmerdine a fine. But they did admonish him. How nice. Maybe our government masters can be even more gracious and let him have an extra log for the fire too?

Where do we go from here? Companies pay thousands of dollars for billboards and other outdoor advertising after all. So your back bumper must have some value and it just might exceed an arbitrary limit and trigger a violation of campaign finance laws.

The answer is as obvious as ugly is on Helen Thomas. We need a new government bureaucracy! We’ll call it the Bureau for the Establishment of Noticing Deficiency with Obedience to Vehicle Election Regulations or BEND OVER for short.

BEND OVER will set up government stations where you will be required to report to each month during a presidential campaign. To keep costs down however we will only have one per state. You’ll just have to deal with driving several hours to get to your state’s facility.

Once there and after inching your way up through the line a government bureaucrat not even capable of asking “would like fries with that” and holding down a real job will inspect your vehicle. He or she (or possibly it?) will take a mandatory two hours to check every inch of your vehicle with a high powered magnifying glass for political advertisements and endorsements. Luckily these only cost the taxpayers $500,000 each due to a bulk discount.

If your car is deemed not have such things you will be free to go; after paying a $500 inspection fee of course. However if you do have a bumper sticker or other form of political endorsement anywhere on your vehicle it will be duly noted in triplicate. At this point its exact size will be measured by three other government bureaucrats.

They will then retire into committee to discuss the exact size of said political advertisement while consulting thousands of pages of guidelines. Some of the regulations will obviously contradict each other so only those regulations that will maximize your potential violations will be used while all others are discarded.

If these bureaucrats are unable to agree upon the actual size, your vehicle will be impounded for up to six months while lesser qualified but higher ranking bureaucrats are consulted. Where do you think you are going? You will not be allowed to leave the facility. Instead you will be placed under arrest for the potential violation of campaign finance laws. At the end of those six months if there is still no agreement your car may be impounded for another six months repeating this cycle until consensus is achieved.

However, once the exact size of your political advertisement has been agreed upon, another bureaucrat highly trained in reading numerals will record your odometer reading. This will be done ten separate times over the course of a day just to verify that the readings are accurate and then sent to the newly formed Department of Odometer Standards and Measures for approval (a procedure that can take several weeks).

At this point you will be allowed to leave but only after posting $200,000 bond (in cash) to cover any potential fines. If you cannot post the bond you will be held in a special detention center while your case is under review. Don’t worry, your family will be allowed to visit you once every six months and a government approved illegal alien will fill in for you at work.

If you are capable of posting the bond you will have a special tracking bracelet clamped to your ankle just in case you have any ideas about not showing up for your court ordered re-inspection next month. You may also notice black helicopters and vans filled with federal agents following you. Have no fear. They are just there to make sure you do not try to flee the country.

After month of “freedom” you will return and your odometer reading will be rerecorded and your vehicle checked for any new political advertisements which you might have dared to add to your vehicle. Then the Department of Odometer Standards and Measures Oversight Committee will be consulted to approve the difference between the new reading and the old reading.

Now the real fun begins!

The previously agreed to size of your political advertisement and your odometer readings will be fed into a state of the art computer (with no paper trail of course) along with the total number of people which have seen your advertisement and which you will be required, under oath of course, to keep records of and attest to. Remember, there have been federal agents on your tail for that month so you had better be honest!

You will also turn over the records for things such as hourly wind speed and direction, cloud cover, precipitation, and assorted other meteorological data. Don’t roll your eyes at me young ward of the state! This information is important to determining the value of your advertisement.

As the computer spits out the final value, it will be written down by yet another bureaucrat on special paper and sealed without you being allowed to look at it. This package will then be sent to the offices of the FEC where they will review the information for the next two years. During those two years you however will be free to go. However your car will not be allowed to leave the inspection station.

Once the FEC has reviewed your case the packet will be sent back to the inspection station via armed courier along with either an “admonishment” (if you are lucky) for daring to show support for the candidate of your choice in public or (if you are unlucky) a fine to be paid plus interested accrued since the date your political advertisement was first noted by the government bureaucrats. If you posted the $200,000 cash bond and your fine happens to be less than that amount sorry, but you will not receive any refund. The federal government has already spent the money. There are tons of people out there with their hands out after all!

If your fine is determined to be in excess of your initial bond and you cannot pay the difference you will be thrown in jail for not less than 50 years for daring to practice your free speech. But if you can pay all applicable fines your vehicle and your keys will be returned to you.

You might however notice that the vehicle is in decidedly worse shape than when you first got it and that your “political advertisement” has been forcibly removed by scraping the paint off the vehicle down to the bare steel. This is because for the two years while your vehicle was impounded the government was using it for a variety of purposes to better serve the “common good” and being generally run into the ground. Hey, just be thankful that you got it back!

Please also be aware that in order to be “fair” to “poor” families who obviously do not have the means to post the $200,000 bond when they place political endorsements on their vehicles, you may be asked to post the bond for them. If you are not able to post the bond for them then you will be treated just as if you were not able to pay your own bond. Hey, you’re “rich” so stop your damn gripping!

How can a country smaller than Vermont, with a population of less than 10 million people, demand so much of the worlds attention? Every president during my lifetime has committed great amounts of energy to find peace in the Middle East, but only find frustration. There is much more to Israel than headlines.

The battle over the land of Israel or Palestine is nothing new. The entire Old Testament in the Bible is mainly about the land. God promised the land to Abraham, called Moses to lead the people to the land, and had King David establish Jerusalem as the capital of the nation and Jewish religion.

Israel’s history turned really sour when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (Iraq today) captured the country and enslaved it’s citizens. Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the beautiful Temple of God that King Solomon had built. This all happened over 2,500 years ago! I find it interesting that after the Persians (Iran today) had taken over Babylon, King Cyrus allowed the Jewish people to have their land back and rebuild their temple. the book of Ezra tells this story.

Have you ever heard of Jesus? Yeah, he was a Jew. After that little story of his death, burial, and resurrection the Jewish nation was destroyed and scattered the final time by the Romans. For 2000 years the Jewish race survived without a national home. Throughout their history their enemies have done everything they can to kill them all. Remember Hitler? So Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the current President of Iran, is not the first to call for the complete destruction of Israel.

The Old Testament foretold of the scattering of Israel and the ultimate return to the land in Ezekiel 37-39. On May 14, 1948 this prophecy was fulfilled, with the blessing of the United Nations, Israel declared their independence and ownership of the land. The Palestinians and other Arabs have battled them to this day.

Politically, Israel is our greatest ally. They have a democratic form of government and a free market economy.

The Bible has another prophecy about this area of the world – there will never be peace until Jesus returns. The last battle Armageddon will be fought there. This all makes Helen Thomas and her comments seem a little small. Feel free to deny all this Bible stuff, but it is all pretty amazing.

George W Bush was the first president to suggest the two state solution for Israel and Palestine. This may happen some day but it will never solve the problem. The Arab world is determined to destroy Israel, regardless of any political solutions.

There are 25 Arab countries with their distinct religion and race. There is one small Jewish country with their own religion and race. Forget the religion thing, it seems logical that American would continue to support Israel.

Both the Christian and Islamic religions were birthed out of the Jewish faith. Christians are instructed to love their enemies and try to save all people. Muslims are instructed to kill their enemies. Makes one wonder why liberals are more supportive of Arab position.

I think I want to stay on Israel’s side.

Its a beautiful addition to any living room or bar area. With clean, clear water, the diffused light on top making the entire aquarium glow, and with plants (purchased additionally) and gold-fish, this is quite striking.

A note on maintenance and care: It needs to be kept clean and devoid of algae, or it quickly loses its look. They say the algae can sometimes permanently cloud the acrylic making it just a wee bit duller than pure transparence. If you keep the aquarium away from any direct or indirect sunlight and maintain temperatures under 75F, algae will generally not develop. The filter can be cleaned and re-used a few times before replacing (less often than what biorb would suggest). When cleaning the aquarium ensure that the stones don’t scratch the acrylic surface (which can happen quite easily if you’re not careful while swinging a suction tube inside the aquarium). As you can guess, i did exactly that and the scars on the acrylic look bad from close range – irreparable

Bought this as a gift for a friend. She found the Biorb handy for a first-time pet-keeper. The Biorb can be kept easily on a computer desk. The installation was very easy. The pump, gravel and other accessories that came along were good. A useful thing would be to buy the Biorb cleaner pump and an extra pack of gravel along with this.
I would have preferred to get her a 16 gallon one instead of a 8-gallon. The 8-gallon Biorb now houses 4 neon tetras and 2 guppy fish. If you are planning to house a few gold fishes I would suggest going for the bigger version.
I would not suggest the Biorb if you are planning to have salt-water fishes.

I got the deal of a lifetime on my BiOrb, so I am much more forgiving with the review than some I have read. True, the BiOrb does come with everything you need to get started, with the exception of fish and water. It is a little tricky to get everything right, so maybe you can learn from my mistakes. I found the water was getting cloudy, so I pumped a gallon out of the tank and replaced with a new gallon (as per instructions). Didn’t help… it looked like Gophie was swimming in the H2O equivalent of Los Angeles. Gophie the First couldn’t take it anymore and died..bummer.

So… before my 4 year old could get back from preschool, I raced to Petsmart to find Gophie’s twin. Found one. Put him in the BiOrb and have applied the following lessons…

First, there is NOT ENOUGH biological media (OK, rocks..)in the starter kit. You need at least twice the amount. Buy the 2lb bag on Amazon, it’s the best buy out there. Also, the Stress Zyme in the starter kit isn’t real clear with the instruction. You MUST use this, or your “rocks” won’t grow the necessary bacteria to filter the water. However…you have to use it like this… 1ml per gallon of water at set up. Half that amount on the 7th, 14th, 21st…ok..you get the pattern…put it in every week. Do this, and you will LOVE the BiOrb. It looks cool, easy to care for and there are lot’s of cool accessories… (like the pink base and top ring that I got for my daughter’s room). OK, so the pump is a little noisy… it’s isn’t a 10, but it IS pretty close…

I’ve had this tank for a couple months now and I have to say that I really like it. I feel that as for appearances, there is nothing that beats the biorb. More importantly, my betta fish really loves his new home. He has so much more room to swim now and swims around a lot more than he did in his old tank. I do have to say that you do have to spend money to maintain the biOrb in buying new filters and maintainance kits, but it is worth it to keep your water clean, the tank clean, and your fish happy in a relatively easy manner. Overall, the aquarium is working fine and aesthetically, it looks amazing especially with the extra decorations I have added to it. I wouldn’t get any other tank
