Feel younger with this foolproof r&r plan

Better than Botox, fresher than a facial, surer than surgery – the best way to look younger is to think younger! Here are 10 winning ways to revitalize your thinking and your life.

  1. Get moving: factor a 15-minute walk into your normal day for the next two weeks. Walk to the station or go one bus stop further along the route, take the longer journey home from work. After two weeks of short sharp bursts, you will want to be more energetic, so review your exercise quotient and extend it so that you gradually build up to at least half an hour every day or one hour every two days.
  2. Love to learn: Find a language school or revive your childhood interest in drawing and find an art class, do whatever you like just so long as you are actively engaged in something that interests you. While you are learning something new, you know you are alive!
  3. Get dated: Whether your social life is full or empty, make a date with yourself to enjoy a special treat. Choose a walk through a particularly beautiful piece of countryside, treat yourself to a magnificent meal in your favourite restaurant, take yourself off to the museum or art gallery. Just enjoy your own company and make this a regular event.
  4. Dream a little: Use the power of your mind to create the world you want; imagine your life the way you would really love it to be and develop this imagined scenario into a movie that you can play in your head whenever you choose to. This kind of daydreaming – we coaches call it visualization – is fun, relaxing and hugely positive.
  5. Worry less: Ask yourself “what is the worst that could happen?” Finding the answer will liberate you in ways you can only begin to understand. Facing your worst fear and imagining how you would cope – and yes, you definitely would cope, even if the worst did happen – will free you from it.
  6. Simplify your style: take a leaf out of the book of the performance artist who wore the same brown dress for a year; make your wardrobe work for you and free up your time. Spend an afternoon throwing out anything from your wardrobe that doesn’t fit, flatter and inspire you. We all wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time, so there will be plenty of room for manoeuvre.
  7. Smile more: Research shows that children smile on average 400 times a day. By the time we have grown into adults our smile score dips down to a sad and sorry 15 times a day. Take charge by consciously smiling at everyone around you; smile when you pay your bus fare and when you collect your newspaper, when you have the car serviced and pick up your dry cleaning. See what a difference it makes to the way people greet you – it will work wonders for your confidence.
  8. Try a different persona: If you are usually quiet and thoughtful, try being the talkative one. If you’ve spent your whole life being reserved and shy, just try being outgoing and friendly for one afternoon. See how it feels to be different – you may just find a new personality trait!
  9. Let the world revolve around you: Putting too low a value on yourself and your time is guaranteed to encourage other people to undervalue you too. Regularly spend some of your time on yourself, doing exactly what you want to do; be a little selfish, think positive and put your needs first, without guilt or apology. You are, as the advertisers so frequently tell us, worth it!
  10. Unclog your social scene: if you always meet up with Bill and Jenny on Friday night for a meal, invite Charlie to join you all on Saturday for brunch instead. If you dress down for dinner, plan a diamonds and caviar night; swap the cinema for an evening at the theatre now and then.

Good luck and happy rejuvenation!

Great Literary Hoaxes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Margaret B. Jones published “Love and Consequences” in 2008 as a memoir of her life as an abused half black, half native child foster child when in fact she is a white woman from a middle class neighborhood.

“Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years” was written by Misha Defonseca in 1997. The book was a Bestseller and was translated into 18 languages, and made into a feature film in France. However, the author admitted in February 2008 that her story of trekking across Europe with a pack of wolves during the Holocaust wasn’t true. Apparently she’s not even Jewish.

James Frey wrote his 2003 memoir, A Million Little Pieces, about a 23-year-old alcoholic drug abuser who manages to get his life back together with the help of a Twelve Steps-oriented treatment center. Frey eventually admitted to fabricating large portions of the book and left a swindled Oprah apologizing to the world for defending him. Even though the books publisher was forced to offer money back to dissatisfied customers, the book continues to sell as a work of fiction.

JT LeRoy, aka Laura Albert… not only picked a pseudonym but made up a fake background and even sent a friend to impersonate LeRoy on book tours. Albert kept up the HIV-positive former drug addicted hustler double life for several years and managed to squeeze out a few bestsellers(“Sarah” and “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things”) before the hammer dropped.

Timothy Patrick Barrus wrote three ‘memoirs’ under the pseudonym Nasdijj: “The Blood Runs Like a River Through My Dreams” (2000), “The Boy and the Dog Are Sleeping” (2003) and “Geronimo’s Bones: A Memoir of My Brother and Me” (2004). Within them he claimed to be of Navajo heritage with abusive parents until LA Weekly blew the story open.

In 1999 Michael Pelligrino fooled US publisher Simon & Schuster into thinking that he was Michael Gambino, grandson of Mafioso Carlo Gambino, and went on to write `The Honored Society` a book that was supposedly based on his own experiences as a gangster. The pack of lies was exposed when a legitimate Gambino family member heard about the book and had his lawyers blow the whistle.

Binjamin Wilkomirski (aka Bruno Grosjean) wrote “Fragments”, a supposed Holocaust memoir, in 1996. The book recalled the horrors of two Nazi death camps in Poland and the book won the National Jewish Book Award for an autobiography. In 1999 a historian investigated accusations against the author it was discovered that Wilkomirski was actually Swiss a man named Bruno Grosjean who had never been in a camp.

Anthony Godby Johnson was credited for writing “A Rock and a Hard Place” in 1993. The story involves a 14-year-old HIV-positive boy describing the sexual abuse he suffers. A group of journalists eventually uncovered that Anthony didn’t exist and the story was totally fictional. The novel had been written by Vicki Fraginals, who claimed to be Anthony’s foster mother and impersonated the fictional child in telephone interviews.

Marlo Morgan, caused a stir among Australian Aboriginal groups when she published “Mutant Message Down Under” in 1994. The book claimed to be a memoir of her time spent with Aboriginals. After a number of protests by Aboriginal groups, claims that Morgan invented large portions of the book, and insights suggesting that she may have never stepped foot on the continent, the book is now published as fiction.

Forbidden Love (also called Honor Lost in the United States) was written by Norma Khouri (pen name of Norma Bagain Toliopoulos). It is the story the writers Jordanian friend who’s love for a Christian soldier had been kept secret from her Muslim father due to conflict in religion. When the father eventually finds out and consequently stabs his daughter to death in a so-called honor killing. In 2004 Sydney Morning Herald journalist Malcolm Knox discovered that book was a hoax leaving us with another work of fiction.

Asa Cater, a white Ku Klux Klan member published “The Education of Little Tree” in 1977 under the pen name Forrest Carter. The book is described as a memoir of Carter, who as a Cherokee orphan who battled racism and struggled to find his heritage. By the 1990s Asa was discovered to be the actual writer of the book and publishers re-classified it as fiction. It was around this time that Oprah removed the book from her list of picks.

Clifford Irving forged letters and signatures and created false names for Swiss bank accounts in an attempt to earn $750,000 for writing a fake biography of the reclusive Howard Hughes.

“Go Ask Alice,” by Anonymous, is the diary of a teenage girl who’d died of a drug overdose which was published as a cautionary tale to deter foolhardy teens from following in her footsteps. However it was eventually revealed that the book’s “editor,” Beatrice Sparks, was also the books author and the anonymous girl was in fact fictitious. The controversy didn’t deter Sparks, who went on to produce many other similar “diaries” about troubled adolescents.

Historical Hoaxes

Maria Monk’s book “Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk, or, The Hidden Secrets of a

Nun’s Life in a Convent Exposed” was published in January 1836. The book is about the seven years that Monk spent at the convent of the Hôtel-Dieu where was forced to have sex with priests who killed the illegitimate babies and made uncooperative nuns disappear. After several investigations it was discovered that building descriptions in the book did not match the actual building and that the claims of the book were false. Moreover, Monk herself was found to have suffered brain damage as a child and had trouble distinguishing fact and fantasy and it is believed she may have been manipulated into the role by publishers.

In the 1840s Reverend Johann Wilhelm Meinhold claimed to have discovered a manuscript written by Abraham Schweidler, a former minister of the old Coserow Church. Meinhold then published the story of Mary Schweidler: The Amber Witch in German as a fact based instructional document for the avoidance of witchcraft. Critics believed it to be authentic and it was only in later editions that the author admitted to it being a work of fiction. This book contains a hoax within the hoax as the English translator Lady Duff-Gordon gave herself credit as author in 1861 denying the original German edition until she was later found out.

In the late 1700s, Thomas Chatterton claimed to have found poems written by a 15th century monk named Thomas Rowley. When it was discovered that Chatterton had written them himself and the young poet panicked killing himself with arsenic. His work was eventually published after his death, and he became a beacon of inspiration to Romantic poets everywhere.

Also in the 1700s James Macpherson claimed a translation of the 3rd century epic Gaelic poet Ossian, it took nearly a century to prove that Macpherson had written them himself.

Hoaxes designed to expose

In an effort to show how literature in America had become mindlessly vulgar a group of writers at Newsday wrote “Naked Came the Stranger” in 1969, going into explicit detail about the sexual adventures of a suburban housewife. When it was found out that the author Penelope Ashe was in fact 25 Newsday writers, sales of the book were left unchanged.

A group of Science Fiction writers got together in 2005 to write book so bad it would be deemed un-publishable by any proper publisher. Each chapter of Atlanta Nights was written by a different author, including both chapter 12s and chapter 34 which was written by a computer program. The only chapter not written by a different author was the non existent chapter 21. The project was to test PublishAmerica s claim that they were a traditional publisher of high quality work, the manuscript was accepted but once the hoax was reveled they re-evaluated their decision and eventually rejected the book. The author group then self published the book on a lark under the pseudonym Travis Tea.

Ern Malley wasn’t an Australian mechanic turned poet, but the creation of James McAuley and Harold Stewart. The pair of poets wrote a set of poems and created an elaborate, albeit fake, back story for Erm Malley. As they hoped the poems were published in an effort to discredit the Australian poetry magazine Angry Penguins. The events all played out as planned and Erm Malley remains one of Australia’s greatest literary hoaxes.

In the mid 1950s, New York radio personality Jean Shepherd was outraged by the way bestseller lists were created. At the time the lists were composed of books sold as well as requests for books at a bookstore. Shepherd urged listeners to go to their local bookstores to demand “I, Libertine,” by Frederick C. Ewing when neither the book nor the author existed. The gag created a sensation and convinced, bestseller list creators that their methods were outdated and also got Sheppard a book deal to actually write the fake book.

Are Detox Programs Good For Your Body?

People come to my clinic and say, “I want to do a detox.”

“Okay,” I say. “We need to start with oil massage and get you into the steam box.”

They look startled. They were expecting be to given a bunch of herbs and laxatives to flush out their colon. After the initial shock, they ask, “Do I have to rest? Do I have to reduce my other activities? This looks like it’s going to take up some time.”

The Reality of Healing the Body

Next thing, they find themselves at the front desk, scheduling their life to slow down– just a little bit. What the heck is so important about that person’s life that they can’t take a few days off to oil themselves and relax?

The mentality is really destructive.

Today, the “detox craze” shows no sign of eliminating itself. People expect a week’s downing of detox pills to make up for months of unbalanced living.

Are You Going Against a Natural Sense of What Feels Good?

People are taking these bentonite cleanses. Yes, they do feel better for a few days (once it’s all over). But it was so difficult, uncomfortable and against the natural sense of what feels good they don’t do it again. Sure a few colon cleansing champions proudly keep up the regimen. The rest talk about doing it but don’t.

The UK online journal Science About Science did a press release, this time last year, recommending people forget about detoxing. UK’s leading scientists and clinicians said: “Save your money: have a glass of tap water, a turkey salad and a good night’s sleep!”

Now, I don’t agree with much of what they conclude, but they do make a lot of good points. Not only do most of those store bought cleansing kits provide little long term results… Yes, it makes you have a lot more bowel movements (or just plain diarrhea). In the process, though, they also dry the bowels out. If your colon is dry and worn out, how easy will it be to clean out toxins?

Another good point made by those UK scientists was that to recover from holiday-feasting, plenty of water, rest and fresh air can do wonders. All of these, of course, require you slow down and take it easy. Combined with a balancing diet, oil massage and sauna (see page 77 of my Effortless Ayurvedic Living Guide – free to all subscribers of my ezine), you will experience not a “detoxification” but a purification. Not just physically, but mentally and spiritually.

Modern Detox Versus Ayurvedic Purification

It’s no secret that most of these modern detox diets are unpleasant. It’s quite unlike an Ayurvedic Purification Program. We purify by using natural oils to lubricate the brain, the eye tissue, the sac around the heart… Detox diets tend to dry the system out. In the process they get rid of toxins, yes, but in the process damage tissue.

I’ve done all these other programs. The water fasts. The juice fasts. The pysllium husk fasts. I knows what it’s like. They don’t have the same level of deep comfort from the inside out that I experience with Ayurvedic Purification.

I think everybody who’s tried conventional detox diets know the kind of tinny vibration that goes through you. Your nerves are jangled for the entire program. Most of these detox-in-a-box kits ask that you keep it up for three consecutive months! And they don’t afford time to prepare the body with oil, sauna and massage.

It’s So Limited And Ridiculous

The ancients lived in a slow world. They lived in a world of texture and senses. They related to the body like nobody was in a hurry. They stayed with it until relaxed, until it felt its own grace again.

People today are really just being sold out of impulsive curiosity. It’s a huge consumer movement. I’m not trying to accuse anybody. But I’ve found no comparison to when you apply the simple, loving approach of Ayurvedic Purification.

Ayurvedic Purification wants to help induce your connection with yourself. Purify the body, revitalize the body. Reconnect all your nadis and chakras, so everything feels contained inside. It generates a sense of power from the inside out. Especially if you are a vata or pitta — you’ll experience a lubricated, grounded, invincible feeling.

Toxins Distort Your Relationship With Yourself

When I first discovered this Ayurvedic technique, I received emotional, psychic and spiritual healing. I was filled with a desire to do good things for myself. I learned how toxins distort my relationship with myself. All kinds of levels got addressed and healed.

In order to truly purify, we need to slow down (if only for a weekend) and devote time to balancing ourselves. A simple detox diet every few months isn’t going to have much effect on your life. The BBC completed a study last week called Does Detox Work?

They brought ten party animals to a cottage retreat. Five of them were fed — what the reporter called — a “balanced diet” of red meat, alcohol, coffee, tea, pasta, bread, chocolate and crisps. The other five were junk free.

The article reported: “After testing the kidney and liver functions and measuring the antioxidant and aluminum levels in their blood we found there were no differences between the groups.”

Hardly a perfect experiment, but it does illustrate my point. You need to truly slow down and focus on the reality of healing your body. A detox box or a one week cleansing diet is not enough.

Purifying Power of Daily Oil Massage

If all you do is experience the purifying power of daily oil massage, you’ll be far, far better of than the best of the best “Master Cleansers.” I’d encourage you to read Chapter 3 of my A-Z Guide to Healing Techniques from Ancient India (a free gift to all subscribers to my ezine). If all I ever accomplish from my work is convincing a few million people doing daily oil massage, I’ll be more than content.

Leadership Training Will Develop Your Pattern Skills

Leadership Training Will Develop Your Pattern Skills

By: Bill Thomas

Who is the better leader, Sarah or Jim? Both are managers of

their respective departments, they’ve taken similar leadership

training courses and they have the same number of team members.

According to their bosses, they are well-respected supervisors

and they seem to be equally as effective as the other.

However, when surveyed, Sarah’s people rank her leadership as

being superior to Jim’s style. In particular, Sarah was seen as

caring, committed, casual and highly competent. On the other

hand, Jim’s teams felt his leadership style lacked compassion, a

clear focus, empathy and control over most circumstances. What

could account for these glaring differences?

Most leadership training courses fail to prepare leaders for the

realities confronting them and their people – that we operate in

and need to manage the whirlwinds of our complex lives. People

are physical beings, we think and calculate, aspire towards

ideals and feel emotions, we have family, household, social and

community responsibilities.

Somehow, leaders have to understand and manage the challenges of

the human condition. Short of becoming a master sociologist,

psychologist or cultural anthropologist, successful leaders like

Sarah have learned to handle those challenges by employing a

variety of work patterns.

Sarah’s Success Pattern One – Show Them You Care, In-Time!

While she doesn’t spend hours of her time doing so, Sarah does

make it a priority to inquire about, linger around and delve

into the personal lives of her people every single day. Of

course, she asks them how their day is going but she puts even

more effort and emotion into concentrating on a family problem

or relationship situation of her one or two people.

For instance, Sarah made some time to ask Helen about her son’s

weekly football game and found out he was slightly injured –

Sarah heard Helen‘s concerns for her son’s safety so Sarah

decided to give Helen information about parental support groups

and the next day she shared a few sports injury website

locations with Helen too.

What Sarah really gave Helen was her time and attention – Helen

was shown appreciation and concern for being a mother, caregiver

and homemaker. Sarah’s total investment in time was a mere 20

minutes, the return on her investment was Helen‘s loyalty, trust

and commitment to helping the department succeed.

Sarah’s Success Pattern Two – Bridging The Gaps, In-Knowledge!

Jim believes leading is commanding, however, Sarah views leading

as an exercise in learning. A few times each week, Jim gets

unpleasant surprises and once or twice a month, he receives a

disturbing shock.

Sarah actively assumes she has gaps, shortfalls and errors in

her knowledge – so she methodically and persistently looks for

ways to gather as much information as possible. She relies on

the different perspectives, the answers to open-ended questions

and the ‘possibility-thinking’ of others to strengthen her base

of knowledge.

Being a “student” of human nature, the workings of Nature and

the dilemmas of the human condition, gives Sarah’s leadership

competence many opportunities to blossom.

Sarah’s Success Pattern Three – Provide Superior Service,

In-Deed!

Jesus Christ taught, “The greatest among you, will be servant of

all.”
History proves the wisdom His words – the most successful,

enduring leaders have left legacies of great service for those

whom they led – just ask the people of India (Gandhi), Israel (

Moses), USA (Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, etc.), African-

Americans (Lincoln & King), South Africa (Mandela & Tutu), or

Great Britain (Churchill).

Sarah’s leadership style involves asking about, listening for

and clarifying the needs, desires or experiences of her

associates. She successfully serves the ideals of her team’s

mission by:

=> Accepting the risks and uncertainty inherent in all decisions,

=> Realizing how humility and meekness leads to wise

deliberations

=> Avoiding the unethical, immoral behaviors which result in

failed ventures

Using conversations with her followers and the counsel of other

accomplished leaders, Sarah treasures their wisdom, she

discovers new ways to be of service and she makes more on-target

decisions.

————————————————————

“Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to

learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for

their apparent disinclination to do so.”
– Douglas Adams

As we seen in Sarah’s examples, leadership invokes the acts of

looking, learning and loving. Sarah also inspired us to adopt

open-minded, possibility-oriented, self-regulating attitudes.

Effective leaders employ patterns of behaviors, priorities and

styles to study, serve and support their people, their missions

and their knowledge. Leadership skills training courses which

include the subject of work patterns provide leaders with

reliable foundations for success.

“Love takes up where knowledge leaves off.”

- Saint Thomas Aquinas

Brotherly love, faith, inquisitiveness, service and creativity

are willful acts – when you intend on being like, acting like or

becoming like those actions, you will achieve them. Wise leaders

use pre-determined patterns of actions, resource usage and

mental controls to energize their visions and transform the

ordinary into the extraordinary reality.

Conducting a Successful Development Services Program

Conducting a Successful Development Services Program Definitely not worth the [money] – Patti J. Saunders – Anchorage, AK
The Jossey-Bass series has a good reputation, as does Kent Dove. But this book is a huge disappointment. It is billed as an indispensable aid for practitioners and a textbook for students, but it serves neither set of readers well. Practitioners looking for solid advice and good examples to illustrate principles in action find nothing of the sort. And pity the poor student who has to slog through this to pass a course. This is an uninspiring, tendentious, tedious exercise in making the elegantly simple art of fundraising appear to be some arcane mystery that only the likes of a long-time practitioner like Kent Dove can master.

Most people are intimidated enough about asking for money, they don’t need to be scared/shamed out of the field by reading this kind of mumbo jumbo that makes them feel stupid or inadequate.

The book has a few good tables and nuggets of useful information, but not enough to justify a [money] price tag. I’m glad I borrowed this from the library to preview it before buying — it saved me the effort of returning it.
: Nonprofits’ behind-the-scenes fundraising functions–information systems, development technologies, research, managing prospects, and stewardship–not only support an organizations’ overall development efforts but also are key to long-term success.

A first-of-its-kind resource, Conducting a Successful Development Services Program draws together in one book a tremendous body of knowledge on planning and managing an innovative and effective development services program. Written by master fundraiser Kent Dove, the book guides you through the process of identifying, researching, and managing prospects; creating, storing, and using data and information; and, properly administering gifts and showing appreciation to donors. An extensive resource section offers you a wealth of examples from real-life organizations.

Earnshaw and Arnold and the Great Escapements

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thomas Earnshaw and John Arnold, clock and watch makers of the highest calibre, were nevertheless fierce rivals. Earnshaw, by his own admission, was “naturally of an irritable habit.’ He was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on the 4th. February 1749. Arnold, in Bodmin, Cornwall in 1736.

Nevil Maskelyne, The Astronomer Royal, poor George Harrison’s nemesis, was so taken by Earnshaw when they were introduced to each other on the 1st. July 1789, that Maskelyne asked him to make a regulator for the Armagh Observatory. At first, Earnshaw didn’t like the idea at all.

“I have never made a clock, and I don’t know how many wheels are in one.”

It can’t have taken him long to learn the complexities of clockmaking, however, because the regulator he made for the Armagh observatory is considered one of the finest ever created. The Rev. Dr. John Thomas Romney Robinson, the Irish astronomer and physicist, and astronomer of the Armagh observatory, considered it the finest clock he’d ever seen.

Both Arnold and Earnshaw, however, are famous for their inventions of the spring and pivoted detent escapement. Earnshaw for the former, Arnold for the latter. The main problem between the two men arose when Earnshaw showed the design of his spring detent escapement to some of Arnold’s friends. Naturally, they told Arnold, who immediately patented his own design of the pivoted detent in 1782.

There’s no doubt that Arnold stole a march on Earnshaw, which caused the latter to become paranoid about anything that his horological peers might be up to. Although John Arnold rushed in with his patent, it’s only fair to point out that he invented his pivoted detent escapement in 1779, although he only finalized the design after seeing Earnshaw’s model. Earnshaw had a right to be angry, but he started out on the slippery slope of alienating virtually everyone with whom he came into contact.

So far as the two designs are concerned, there’s no question that Arnold’s is better, in that it’s more robust, and because it’s pivoted, doesn’t rely on a delicate spring to bring the detent back into place. The only problem is that it does require oil, something that Earnshaw’s spring detent doesn’t. Now in the 18th. century, this was perfectly valid, but when this criticism was leveled against it in the nineteenth century, it was no longer reasonable. The quality of oil had improved greatly by then, so there was very little difference.

Even so, Earnshaw’s spring detent became the one that was in general use until the 1930′s, and the twilight of the marine chronometer.

Earnshaw also developed the bi-metalic balance. Basically, a ring of brass inside a ring of steel in much the same way as the gridiron pendulum. Brass and steel expanding and contracting at different rates, thereby ensuring even timekeeping.

Another fault is that neither escapement is self-starting, unlike the lever escapement, which we’ll have a look at later. The timepiece would have to be gently rotated back and forth once to start it. Not only that, but the spring detent escapement in particular might stop if it received a hard knock. The normal movement of a ship, even in a severe storm, would have no adverse effects on the instrument, however.

Next time, we’ll have another look at the feud between the two, and attempt to describe the design of this most fascinating timepiece

My thanks to Wikipedia for some of the dates in this article

Hello, this is Mike, this time chatting about the chronometer. Watching one of these work can waste more time than almost anything else I know! I spent at least an hour once, watching one of these most fascinating escapements ticking away the seconds. They have relatively massive balances, and when you take the clock out of its brass case and lay it, dial down and movement up, on the bench, you can see its complete operation.
