Standardized, distributed intelligence will make the power grid smarter. However, massive new transmission capacity is needed to incorporate large renewable energy sources. Current power line technologies using semiconductors require huge towers, with huge footprints, to transmit the necessary amounts of electricity from wind- or solar-rich areas to urban areas. Superconducting power lines will require vastly less space and achieve better results than conventional lines a 1-meter right-of-way would accommodate an underground superconducting DC line able to transmit 20 gigawatts, according to Jack McCall, Director of Business Development, Superconductor T&D Systems at American Superconductor, presenting at the US-China Green Energy Forum on October 23, 2009. American Superconductor is in the forefront of developing this brawn to match the smart grids brains. The cost of such cables, which has been an impediment, is decreasing as the technology is scaled up, and the cost effectiveness as compared with conventional lines rises with the distance spanned. Superconducting lines and equipment, Mr. McCall said, will increase the efficiency and resiliency of grid components while reducing their size and weight. Jack McCall has over 25 years experience in the utility T&D business holding a variety of product engineering, product management, system engineering, business development, marketing, and strategic planning roles. He has his Masters in Electric Power Engineering

Greenville’s Main Street wins “Best Places in America” Award

The American Planning Association (APA) announced that Main Street in Greenville, SC has been designated one of 10 Great Streets for 2009 by APA’s Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. Main Street is singled out by APA for Greenvilles strategic vision, plan and implementation steps that have transformed the street during the past 30 years from being lined with vacant buildings to a commercial and social magnet. Its many man-made and natural features both small and large have created a unique sense of place that invites residents and visitors to join in the plethora of activities taking place here. Main Street exemplifies our long-term commitment to honoring the special assets we have in Greenville and to creating inviting public spaces, which attract residents and visitors alike, said Mayor Knox H. White. Destinations such as Falls Park, with its spectacular falls, gardens, and stunning suspension bridge, complimented our already unique Main Street and changed forever how we define our city. Main Street is a celebration of people and their stories, said Mayor Pro Tem Lillian Brock Flemming. The city rejoices in this recognition that honors a place brought back to life over three decades. “Were very excited to single out Greenvilles Main Street as one of this years Great Streets, said APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer, FAICP. “The

Strategic Planning For Dummies

Good stuff. All of it. – Sean A. Levin – New York, NY USA
“Strategic Planning” is a bit of a limited name in my opinion. I’d have called it “Business School in a Book” or maybe, “All the Things You Probably didn’t Think About when your Last Business Failed.” That’s pretty much how I feel as I read it. As I reflect on past mistakes with this as a lens, things seem so much clearer. Providing a birds eye view of the overall business process and all its relevant areas of concern, this already worn book will be sitting on my desk for a long time.
Strategic Planning For Dummies: : If you’re starting a new business or planning your business’s future, there are plenty of things you should take into account. Strategic Planning For Dummies covers everything you need to know to develop a plan for building and maintaining a competitive advantage — no matter what business you’re in.

Written by Erica Olsen, founder and President of a business development firm that helps entrepreneurial-minded businesses plan for a successful future, this handy guide covers all the basics, including:

  • How a strategic plan is different than a business plan
  • Establishing a step-based planning process
  • Planning for and encouraging growth
  • Taking a long-view of your organization
  • Evaluating past performance
  • Defining and refining your mission, values, and vision
  • Sizing up your current situation
  • Examining your industry landscape
  • Setting your strategic priorities
  • Planning for unknown contingencies

If you’re in business, you have to plan for everything — especially if you intend your business to grow. Whether you’re planning for a small business, large conglomerate, nonprofit, or even a government agency, this book has the planning specifics you need for your organization. Step-by-step, you’ll learn how to lay the foundations for a plan, understand how your plan will affect your business, form planning teams, discover what your strengths are, see where you are, and, finally, plan where you’re going. And there’s much more:

  • Learn to analyze business trends that will determine your business’s future
  • Set measurable, realistic goals that you can plan for and achieve
  • Make strategic planning a habitual part of the organization
  • Prioritize multiple strategies that you can implement simultaneously
  • Set a defining vision for the organization that guides all your planning and strategy

This friendly, simple guide puts the power of strategic planning in the palm of your hand. For small businesses that can’t afford to hire strategic planning consultants, it’s even more imperative. Careful, constant planning is the only way to handle an uncertain business future. With this book, you’ll have all the step-by-step guidance you need to ensure you’re ready for anything that comes. – read more.

The cuts are coming. They will hurt

Superintendent William Andrekopoulos first told the School Board’s Strategic Planning and Budget Committee this week that it didn’t take an economist to figure out what is going on with district finances: operations revenue is flat, and costs are increasing. “At some point you have to make cuts, because you don’t have enough money. And we’re not like the federal government — we actually have to have a balanced budget,” he said. Schools are proposing to cut about 397 full-time equivalent teaching positions, he said. “We’re running at a point where we may not have art, music and phy ed teachers working in the district,” he said. Central services departments are compiling their budgets. “Pain and anguish” are present with that process as well, he said.
