Easy read – Steven Koh – Singapore
This is a good and easy read for beginner to embark on the journey of development with high productivity.
It will spur your interest to know more.
Only downside is the technology used is quite outdated.
The author needs to come up with a new edition soon.

Continuous Integration in .NET

Excellent book covering scaffolding for Java development process – Will – Stamford, CT USA
The only problem of this book, that I can think of, is the title that does not give clear indication of the content. The book gives excellent overview of tools, technologies and products that can be used in the Java dev process. It is not a programming or design book but covers the area, I call scaffolding. A lot of contained information, for each covered product, can be retrieved from other sources but it would take substantial amount of time and effort. This books consolidates distilled information in one place and organizes this info in a clear, easy to find form.

The additional benefit of the book is that the author filters products and technologies that are most common and give the most benefit.

It is excellent reference source for any practicing Java developer, as well as very good read for managers, trying to decide how to organize software development process.

Highly recommended.

Good information on NAnt and CruiseControl – P Davies –
This serves as a good introduction to NAnt and NAnt contrib. Working through the excercises was helpful. The introduction for CC.NET is also good.

I recommend this for anyone new to NAnt and CruiseControl. I caution the use of Continuous Integration. It is an excellent way to immediately identify build and integration issues; however, you have to beware of “false positives”. For example, an auto-build everytime something is checked in will determine if that checkin causes a build failure with everything else that is checked in…. however, you need to do some soul-searching to determine if this is what you really want. Do you want to trap failures and correct them, or determine a development strategy ahead of time that will prevent these surprises? The continuous build isn’t a bad idea, but it becomes troublesome if you are substituting that for a good development and integration plan.

Speed 2: Cruise Control durchschnittlich… – Tuppi –
der zweite Teil ist schwächer als der erste. Man kann ihn sich anschauen, er ist auch spannend und unterhaltsam. Aber der erste Teil ist um Längen besser. Hier geht es hauptsächlich um Zerstörung und Schrott. Die Dimension eines Kreuzfahrtschiffes sind doch enorm und die Zerstörungsgewalt dieses kreuzers ist gewaltig. Lachen konnte ich gegen Ende über einen kleinen Jungen, der mit seiner Mutter am Hafen ein Haus besichtigt. Er steht am Fenster und sieht das Schiff kommen Mama, schau mal, da kommt ein Schiff Kluger Junge (der Börsenmakler) Mama, das ist ein großes Schiff und dann rennen sie.

Alles in allem kann man ihn sich anschauen, er ist auch spannend. Aber man darf ihn nicht mit dem ersten teil vergleichen…

FOX: Die Karibik-Kreuzfahrt mit ihrem Freund Alex Jason Patric entwickelt sich unaufhaltsam zur rasanten Todesfahrt, als ein wahnsinniger Computer-Spezialist Willem Dafoe den Luxusliner in seine Gewalt bringt und auf einen mörderischen Zerstörungskurs programmiert. Speed 2 – Cruise Control läßt Ihre Adrenalin-Wellen in rasanter Geschwindigkeit ganz nach oben schnellen. Hat irgend jemand Keanu gesehen? Der Actionstar von Speed hat sich aus dieser überflüssigen Fortsetzung herausgehalten, in der Co-Star Sandra Bullock sich in einen anderen Mann verliebt (Jason Patric) und an Bord eines Kreuzfahrtschiffes, das unter die Kontrolle eines verrückten Erpressers (Willem Dafoe) gerät, Ärger bekommt. Speed-Regisseur Jan de Bont steht auch bei Teil 2 wieder am Ruder, aber selbst er scheint vergessen zu haben, dass im ersten Film die Einfachheit der Story (eine Bombe, ein Bus, der nicht unter 80 km/h fahren darf, eine Handvoll sympathischer Passagiere etc.) das Erfolgsrezept war. In Speed 2 ist alles riesig: großes Schiff, viele Orte, an denen man in Schwierigkeiten geraten kann, und so weiter. Selbst das rasende, endlose Finale, bei dem das Schiff in den Hafen kracht (und eine Riesenzerstörung verursacht) kann den Film nicht einmal entfernt so spannend wie seinen Vorgänger machen. –Tom Keogh

Good introductory overview with a hands-on approach and list of tools – Juergen Kahrs – Bremen, Germany
I enjoyed reading this book, learned much from it and can recommend this book as a fast introduction to the practices of Continuous Integration. Having read the book, I would summarize it to be more of a bag of proven practices than a brilliant theoretical approach. The other reviewers have praised the good aspects of this book quite correctly. While reading the book, I kept filling and updating three lists for myself:

1. TODO: practices, ideas and approaches that I will take over. This list grew quite long.

2. blind spots: this book limits its focus to medium-sized Java and C# projects. Several aspects of large projects are not covered at all: C++ (handling of libraries), multi-platform, multi-language, UML-tools and model-based development (Rhapsody), generated code, HW/SW integration with FPGA, DSP and VHDL, integration of 3rd party products, maintaining product lines and their variants, integration of CI with existing quality assurance and documentation processes

3. reject: there is one recommended practice that I quite frankly reject, this is “collective ownership of code”; in medium-sized Java-only projects it may be possible to assign responsibility for the code to each and every developer who is involved. But in large projects (involving the tools Rhapsody, C++, VHDL, SQL) you would ask too much of the developers if you expect them to cover each and every of these tools.

Some reviewers have criticized that there is too much repitition in the chapters. This is true. The chapters were written by different authors and it is obvious that each chapter was written so that it could be presented without the other chapters. As a consequence, the basic priniciples are repeated again and again.

I have seen this book and its basic principles being applied in two very different companies. In one company, middle-management based their decisions on a combination of two sources:
1. this book as a Gospel and 2. SCRUM was their religion. The results were sometimes frightening. Reading this book is no replacement for a lack of craftsmanship and understanding your daily work and its details. Bad decisions can grow out of CI-ideology when applied blindly.

Take this book as a bag of good ideas, not as the only true church. Otherwise people involved might start hating their jobs.

Konfigurationsmanagement mit Subversion, Ant und Maven: Grundlagen für Softwarearchitekten und Entwickler : Kaum ein Softwarearchitekt oder -entwickler mag das Thema, über das Gunther Popp geschrieben hat — das ändert sich jedoch nach der Lektüre seines Konfigurationsmanagement mit Subversion, Ant und Maven in der nun vorliegenden, 2. Auflage, denn er beweist mal wieder, dass es für alles eine einfache und extrem wirkungsvolle Lösung gibt. Ohne viel Aufwand ein maximales Ergebnis erreichen — Popp weiß wie es geht!

Diskussionen über Projektstruktur, Build-Prozesse, Releases, Check-in-/Check-out Richtlinien, Verwendung von Kommentaren, die zwar nicht im Geld- und Zeitbudget vorgesehen sind, aber trotzdem “irgendwie” gemacht werden müssen, führen oft zu Frustration, Verzug und mehr Druck. Dabei sollen die Bestandteile des Konfigurationsmanagements (KM) den Projektalltag eigentlich erleichtern. Tun sie auch, wenn man weiß wie.

Popp wendet sich mit seinem Buch ausdrücklich an Softwarearchitekten oder -Entwickler — explizit weist er darauf hin, dass er sein Buch nicht aus der Perspektive des Managements, sondern aus der der Architekten und Entwickler auf der Grundlage der täglichen Bedürfnisse der Teammitglieder geschrieben hat.

Popp hat sein Buch um Anleitungen, Beispiele und Hinweise aus der eigenen Praxis auf der Basis des aktuellen Wissenstandes des KM gruppiert und zielt auf eine Umsetzung ohne viel Zeit- und Arbeitsaufwand. Dabei setzt er Kenntnisse um, und mit der Shell-Umgebung sowie die grundlegenden Techniken bei der Erstellung eines Java-Programms voraus. Erfahrung mit Maven, Ant oder Subversion muss man als Leser hingegen nicht mitbringen. Ebenso wie das KM selbst ist Popps Buch als Prozess mit miteinander verwobenen Teilbereichen aufgebaut. Er beginnt mit einem theoretischen Teil und schließt daran einen praktischen Teil an, in dem er die Werkzeuge und die praktische Umsetzung an Hand eines durchgehenden Beispiels beschreibt.
