As a society, we find it easy to judge each other by how we look: she’s too old for this, or she’s too young for that; she wears too much makeup, or why doesn’t she put on some lipstick? We’ve all done it, and I’m as guilty as everyone else. We allow ourselves to typecast people into roles, as a way of instantly editing information.

Unfortunately, this process doesn’t allow for much opportunity to see the diversity around us and within ourselves. You’d be amazed at the enjoyment you can experience with something new or what pleasurable time you can spend in the company of people you have allowed to be who they are, not what you want them to be.

Here we will go through 9 steps making up old ladies (over sixty years old).

To the left: Begin by prepping the skin with a light moisturizer.
Then a light crème foundation (to match) is smoothed onto the face and blended outward with the fingers. (Note: any excess moisture or oil should be blotted using a tissue.)
A sponge is used to apply a loose translucent face powder to set the foundation.
Brows are lightly groomed and filled in by drawing short, feathery strokes with a basic brown eyebrow pencil, then brushed upward and into place.
With a medium shadow brush, warm brown powder eyeshadow is washed all over the entire eyelid, into the crease, and softly under the eye, then blended.
The browbone is softly highlighted, using the same medium shadow brush, with a peach powder shadow. Add a soft dot to the inside corner of each eye, too.
Lashes are curled, then swept in an ample coat of black mascara.
Using a large blush brush, light pink powder blush is dusted onto the apples of the cheeks, forehead, tip of the chin, and temples.
Finally, the lips are lined and filled in using a light flesh lip pencil and covered with a cherry red crème lip color. Use a lip brush for accuracy.

The idea of wearing sexy and fun makeup is not the exclusive territory of the young, nor is wearing conservative maquillage something only the mature can appreciate. By allowing yourself to be positively influenced by the world around you, you set out on a journey to explore life, in all its glory. Being an esthetician, makeup artist, former assistant to a cosmetic surgeon, and a self-proclaimed “beauty junky” have all proven to be surprisingly helpful in my career as a fitness trainer and nutritionist. The majority of my clients have, at one point or another, asked for beauty tips that I’ve luckily been able to provide. And while I do get skin care, makeup, and cosmetic treatment questions from people with varying fitness goals, no one has more beauty questions than the ladies from two specific groups of my clientele: Those getting married, and those preparing for photo shoots.

After answering countless questions asked by my brides and models in regards to everything from breakouts, enlarged pores, and ashy skin, to Botox and lip plumpers, and on to longest lasting foundations, waterproof concealers, and preventing mascara smudges, I’ve noticed quite a few trends.

Since so many of you have similar concerns, I’ve decided to compile these questions into a series of articles outlining the basics of what you need to know to look amazing on your special day.

We all want full, sexy lips – even with minimal makeup, great skin and a perfect mouth can be enough to make for a spectacular look (yes, even on camera!). Whether you’re blessed with near-flawless lips or not, there are steps we can all take to perfect our pouts. Let’s take a look at a few of these now.

How do I deal with dry lips? My chapped lips are always peeling, help! 

No sweat here, just exfoliate your lips! You can use a sugar-based scrub, or even use your toothbrush in a pinch. To make your own sugar scrub, add a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar to 1/4 teaspoon of vaseline, and scrub your lips in a circular motion. 

Don’t feel like making a scrub? Just apply an emollient lotion (like vaseline) to your lips, run hot water over your toothbrush to warm it up and soften the bristles, and gently scrub your lips in a circular motion to take off all those flakes.

Once you’ve done that, apply your favorite balm (my pick: Nivea SOS or Q10 lip treatment), let absorb slightly, and begin applying your lip makeup.

How can I make my thin lips look full and sexy?

You have a few options here, as well. If you’re looking for a long-lasting solution and aren’t afraid of needles, you can look into injectable lip fillers.

There are several different types, the most popular being Juvederm and Restylane (though there are many others, including Perlane, Hylaform, Sculptra, and so on). Lip fillers can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 dollars, depending on the type used, the amount needed, and your geographical location.

If you’d rather not go the injectables route, certain makeup techniques can have a similar effect!

The first thing you’ll want to do, is line right over the ridge of your lips and through your entire lip surface rather than just along the outline of your lips, inside the ridge. Over the pencil, you’ll apply the lipstick, and over your lipstick, add gloss – but not everywhere! You’ll want to place a bit of it strategically, right in the middle of your bottom lip.

You’ll then want to add a slight bit of light-reflecting shimmery color to your cupid’s bow (over the top, center of your lips). A pale pink shadow will work well here. The reflecting light will result in your entire pout appearing much fuller and sexier than you ever thought possible – and all, needle-free!

Should I match my lipstick color to my outfit or gown? How do I color match the right way?

Unless you’re doing an artsy shoot, you’ll want a lip color that’ll match your coloring, not your outfit. It’s never a good idea to match your outfit without paying any mind to your skin tone and hair color – you’re not trying to make your outfit look good; your goal is to make yourself look good! 

Trendy colors are generally a no-no at weddings and other formal, heavily photographed events, because you don’t want to look through your photos twenty years from now and be embarrassed of the bright pink lipstick and bright blue eye shadow you wore. Neutral shades that deepen the natural hue of your lip color are the best bet here, and they’ll last longer with fewer touch ups, to boot!

How do I make the “glossy lips” look last?

This is all about using the right product. There are thousands of lip glosses out there, my personal favorites all happen to be super long lasting ones. Be forewarned, many of the ones that have the ability to last through the day are also quite sticky.

There are different degrees of shine, as well. The more demure brides – or those of you after a more classic look – may opt for a less shiny and more subtle finish of a product like Fresh Sugar Lip Gloss or Lancome Juicy Tubes Smoothie gloss.

If you’re after the full on vinyl look that’ll last through the day, try Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect, Make Up For Ever Super Lip Gloss, Mac Lip Glass, or Yves Saint Laurent Gloss PUR.

My naturally dark lips make it impossible for any lipstick to stay true to its color. Any ideas?

This one’s simple: Just cover your natural lip color! 

Some makeup artists suggest using foundation over the lips, though I personally dislike the idea because it’s drying, never seems to blend well, and never lasts long on that skin. There are, however, many lipsticks that will completely conceal your lip color and will allow any lipstick applied over them to hold true to its shade. Some of my favorites for this are Scott Barnes Show Off, and MAC’s Myth.

Your other option is to use a product especially formulated for this, like MAC’s Lip Erase. You’ll want to apply this product over balm, let it absorb for a few minutes, and proceed with lipstick application. The result? Perfect lips, the exact color of your lippie.

How do I keep my lipstick from bleeding? How about smudging?

If your lipstick tends to bleed, my best tip would be to stay away from creamy lipsticks and glosses, opting for matte ones, instead. If you dislike the matte mouth look, you can always use that as a base color, set with a translucent powder, and go over the top with a clear gloss.

Preventing lipstick from smudging is actually done in a similar way: Apply your lipstick over your pencil (applied over the entire lip, not just the outline!), allow to set for a minute, and set with a setting powder. Once set, apply another coat of the lip color, using a brush to make sure it goes on as thinly and perfectly as possible, and then blot lightly to get rid of any excess.

Set with gloss of choice, and you’re ready for your close up!

After spending months picking out the perfect dress, shoes, and jewelry, you’ve probably had your wedding day hairstyle on the brain. You’ve probably poured over magazines and had a couple trial runs, and now, almost at the last minute, you are finally considering your make-up. Your make-up is just as important as every other detail on your wedding day. After all, you are going to be taking pictures that will last forever, so it’s important that you look absolutely perfect. But, if your make-up artist makes you nervous or if you are just planning on doing it yourself, here are some great tips to ensure wedding day make-up bliss.

1.)   As with everyday make-up, less is always more! You definitely don’t want to look to overdone, so do your best to accent your best features and its okay to go a little darker with your make-up because of the photos, but try to keep it as neutral as possible.

2.)   You can mix your foundation with a light moisturizer to help it go on smoothly and help it absorb more naturally into your skin.

3.)   Don’t over-do the concealer. You should pick on that matches your skin tone perfectly and use just enough to cover up those blemishes, redness, and age spots. You should also consider dabbing a little under your eyes to help with the dark circles.

4.)   Use powder to set your foundation and concealer, and to eliminate shine. Shine is definitely not the wedding day glow you are looking for! You should choose a powder that matches your foundation, and stay away from translucent powders, which tend to eliminate color and will wash you out.

5.)   Choose a blush that matches your skin tone and apply in evenly. A lot of brides tend to over-do the blush, which then in turns makes them look like a clown on their big day! Blush is definitely one of those areas where less in more and if applied evenly will give you that wedding day glow you are looking for.

6.)   Don’t over-do your eye make-up. For an evening wedding, your eye make-up can be done slightly darker, but the best eye make-up is make-up that is done in neutral shades and makes your eye color pop. To make your eyes really stand out, you can take some white eyeliner or white eye shadow and put it on the inside corner of both eyes. This will really waken your eyes up without a whole lot of drama.

7.)   Be careful with eyeliner! You don’t want thick, heavy eyeliner and you should apply it after you are finished with your eye shadow. You should apply it as close to the base of the eyelashes as possible, in a thin steady line. You can also apply in directly under the lower eyelashes, but it is recommended that you use your eye shadow to define your lower lid because it will create a softer look. You should choose a eyeliner that matches well with your shadow and your mascara.

8.)   You should choose mascara that matches your skin tone and really helps your eye color stand out. There are a lot of great mascaras out there that are specifically formulated to help make your eye color stand out.

9.)   You should apply a lip liner that is clear or the same color as your lip. This will keep your lips from looking silly if your lipstick happens to wear off and all your left with is a ring around your mouth.

10.)  Your lip color should be one that accentuates your coloring and doesn’t look to over done. You should also use a brush for a more even application and to keep you from applying too much. Another trick, is to brush a little powder over your lips to help the color stick.

Just like your hair requires a trial run, so does your make-up, especially if you are doing it yourself, so you should consider setting aside a night every other week to practice applying your wedding make-up and definitely try to practice it the night or day before your big day. Remember this is your big day, so don’t be afraid to splurge on some nicer, high-end make up, but be sure to choose it in shades and colors you will use long after your big day to make the expense worth it. As with everything on your big day, remember to have fun with your make-up, but stay away from doing too much more than your normally do or you will be able to tell in your wedding photos and it will look over done.

Tooth Whitening – To Be or Not to Be?

Not satisfied with the color of your teeth? Do not despair. You can literally buy yourself a whiter smile! Though tooth whitening is not a dentally required procedure, it could greatly enhance your self-esteem and improve your appearance. There are several tooth whitening products and techniques currently available. Basically these can be divided into two groups:

(a) Dental Office Whitening involves a trip to your dentist. A mold of your teeth and gums is made, filled with peroxide, fitted onto your teeth and gums and left on for one to two hours. Three to four of such visits later and your pearly whites are officially whitened! A more advanced form of this technique is Laser Bleaching. Here concentrated peroxide gel is applied and activated by a special light, usually Argon. This speeds up the whitening process considerably, though it is more expensive.

(b) At-Home Whitening is much less expensive and more convenient than Dental Office Whitening but is not as effective. Brush-on gels, strips, or trays with bleaching gels are used. Their peroxide concentration is considerably lower than professional tooth whitening; hence they are not as effective. Also, over-the-counter at-home products may contain alcohol, abrasives or acids, all with unpleasant side effects.

Teeth whitening can lighten the color of your teeth several shades, depending on the method chosen. Its effects could last from six months to three years. However, these procedures only work on natural teeth, not dentures, crowns or veneers.

Care of whitened teeth includes twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on sugary snacks and drinks, and those which stain the teeth (e.g. tea, red wine, and coffee). You should definitely consider stopping smoking. Also, a visit to your dentist at least once a year is a must. Side effects, though temporary, may include sensitivity to cold, gum discomfort, sore throat and white patches on the gum line. However, these usually clear up within days of completing the treatment.

We continue our discussion on this intriguing topic rapport today. Today we will talk about body language but not what you normally think of as body language. While that is important when we delve into what is called matching and mirroring for now we will take a closer look at body language. A quantum look if you will.

When you are with someone in any situation be it business or otherwise start noticing the following:

Skin Color

Skin Tonus

Breathing

Lower Lip size

Eyes

Let’s look at each individually. With skin color look for any change in skin color particularly from light to dark. If you are practicing with someone of a darker complexion imagine the person is in a black and white photo and see if you can detect the changes that way.

Skin tonus refers to the muscles of the face. Even if a person has on allot of facial cream or powder the way the light reflects off of their skin can be seen to change. There are over 80 muscles in the face and many make only micro movements. As you start looking at people with your higher sensory acuity you will be able to detect these micro muscle movements.

Breathing is the next thing to pay attention to. Some people breath in the lower abdomen. Some people breath in the mid abdomen and some breath in the upper chest. People who breath in the upper chest are typically shallow breathers and this can be an indication of their preferred representational system. We will discuss representational systems in a later post.

Next we have the lower lip size. When I was first learning NLP, I found this most intriguing. As I looked at people’s lower lip size I was able to detect that the lower lip size do in fact change depending on the situation. It is very interesting to see.

The eyes or the window to the soul as some people refer to them are last in this list but certainly not least. As we continue our journey exploring rapport you will see that the eyes tell a very accurate story of what is actually going on in the person’s mind. Try this right now. Ask someone the color of the room they grew up in when they were a child. As they answer look at the movement of their eyes. If you did this correctly and did not look away you would see that they ended up moving their eyes up and to your right, their left. How did I know that? Well I am not psychic but these eye movements have been shown to be very predictable.

So what does all this have to do with establishing rapport? Well all these queues that you will pick up as you develop your sensory acuity will give you some very accurate indications as to if your communication is getting through to the person that you are working with. It is often easy to style your mane with the help of styling tools such as ironing tools, perming tools and blow dryers. Try to use natural products or dry your mane naturally to avoid damages caused to them. It is easier to style with them, but if you really want to use them ensure that you take care of it with good moisturizing agents and massaging. This will keep them moisturized and well groomed.

For curly follicles you don’t have to use blow dryer. If you add some leave in conditioners when it is wet, you can manage it easily. Just let them dry naturally, that is air dried rather than use heat drying techniques. Tips should be considered while applying conditioner. Leave them on for a while, you can use shower cap and seal in the moisture for a while.
