Things to Consider When Choosing Pet Insurance

There are varied pet insurance plans available for the most common domestic pets, and for many more exotic types of animal. But obviously, there will be a premium to pay for the more exotic types of pet. However, don’t assume that insurance for dogs, for example, is automatically going to be cheap. A lot depends on the type of dog you have. Pure bred dogs, for instance, will cost more to insure than a mixed breed. This is because there are risks inherent in pure bred dogs, risks of hereditary diseases which are in the bloodline. Different breeds would also have different premium rate.

When you get your pet plan, make sure that you know what diseases are covered by it. Many of the older insurance plans did not cover any kind of inbred illness, and often people would take out insurance without realizing this. Make sure you check every small print very thoroughly. Another subject riddled with controversy is that of pre-existing conditions. Some times, an illnesses with a similar kind of symptoms will provoke arguments as to whether the condition actually existed before the insurance was taken out. It is important to ask questions, and record the answers, particularly if your pet has any current health problems.

Look into the kind of lab and dental work covered and carried out by the pet insurance. These are the usual factors which will determine if your pets insurance is good and competitive with others in the market. Lab work especially can be frighteningly expensive; it can usually cover over a third of the expense of the entire medical treatment. Your pet‘s age considerations are also vitally important, as many medical providers will place age restrictions on insurance policies. Although it is a good idea to insure your pet at the earliest possible opportunity, there are many insurers who are unable to offer insurance below a certain age.

Get the most comprehensive pet plan insurance you can afford as no-one can predict the future, or know what misfortune may befall your pet. The exception to this is if you are in a financial position to cover all of the medical expenses which may accrue, in which case it will be better to just take out a very basic policy, and assuming most of the risk yourself. If you have a cross breed dog, there is a strong case for taking out an accident only plan. Because your breed will not be subject to the most common inbred illnesses, you can afford to assume most of the risk, and only take out very basic pet insurance.

Estate Planning For Pets – The Potential For Trouble

When hotel baroness, Leona Helmsley, died in August of 2007, she left a $12 million trust fund for her beloved white Maltese named Trouble.

Despite being the largest beneficiary of Ms. Helmsley’s estate, Trouble may need every bit of her inheritance. Trouble’s luxurious lifestyle reportedly costs $300,00 a year for security, grooming and chef prepared meals served on a silver tray. Additionally, Mrs. Helmsley’s former housekeeper has filed suit against Trouble (or rather Trouble’s trust fund) and Trouble has moved to Sarasota to escape death threats that dogged her life back in Connecticut.

While this may sound like the plot for a new sitcom, estate planning attorneys say that this gift to a beloved pet, aside from the amount, is not unusual.

A growing number of Americans are setting aside significant portions of their estates to make sure their pets are able to live comfortably, many times with a professional caretaker, rather than be given to a relative or even a complete stranger.

This process has become much easier as states are enacting laws allowing for the creation of trusts for the purpose of caring for pets after the death of their owners.

In Florida, a new law became effective on January 1, 2003, which allows pet owners to establish enforceable “pet trusts” to provide for animals after their owners die or become incapacitated. Prior to this law, Floridians could set up arrangements for the care of their pet, but the courts could not enforce those arrangements.

Now, if the pet’s caretakers try to use the pet’s money for themselves, any person having an interest in the pet’s welfare can petition the court to enforce the trust.

Under the Florida pet trust law, you can set up independently, or as a part of your personal revocable trust, a separate fund to provide for the care of your pet.

You would specify the amount of funds, either a set dollar amount or a percentage of your estate, and the pets that will receive the benefits. You can specify a particular pet by name or include all pets owned by you at the time of your death. This will allow it to apply to any pets you acquire after setting up the trust. You can only provide for the care of pets alive at the time of your death. The trust cannot apply to the later born offspring of your pets.

Under the terms of the trust, you would appoint a trustee to manage the money in the fund. This trustee may but does not need to be the same person you name as the pet’s caretaker. You can set up the trust to give the Trustee discretion to apply the funds to veterinary expenses, food, shelter and toys.

After the pet passes away, any money remaining in the trust can be distributed to your heirs or to a charity such as the Suncoast Humane Society.

You may also consider adding provisions to your Designation of Health Care Surrogate conveying your wishes that your pet remain at home with you as long as it is medically advisable and, if you must be moved to a new residence, that your pet be permitted to stay with you, if allowable, or that regular visits be arranged.

Unique Pet #1: Rats

Many people have phobias about rats or associate them with dirt and disease, but rats can actually be great pets. They are very sociable creatures that can be really enjoyable to watch and to interact with.

Stick insects protect themselves by camouflaging themselves to blend in with their environment. They measure only about four inches in length and are very fascinating creatures to have as pets. In addition, they are quite easy to care for.

Boston Terriers: Great Family Pets

The Boston Terrier has been called the ultimate family dog. Many owners say that your family is not complete until you have a Boston Terrier or two. And it’s easy to see why owners give glowing reports of the interactions between their Boston Terriers and their children. Not only will your children benefit from this playful and cuddly furry playmate – they will have a loyal friend for life.

Boston Terriers are intelligent, friendly and outgoing. They love to be around people and will benefit from a loving family “pack”. Typically eager to please these dogs are so lovable you won’t want to consider another breed. If you have young children and intend on buying or already own a Boston Terrier, here are some rules about making the relationship between the children and the dog as trouble free as possible.

1. Good socialization means a good family dog.

Boston Terriers are easy to socialize. Take your puppy with you in the car or out on errands whenever you can. The puppy should get used to being around people and other dogs. Although it is not recommended that you take your puppy into public places before they have received all their vaccines – you can take your puppy in the car with you when you fetch the children from school.

2. The dogs may not be treated aggressively

Children need to be taught not to tease or bother the dog while eating. Any dog gets aggressive if disturbed while eating and this has resulted in many tragic bites. Letting your children feed the dog is a great way to get them involved in caring for your dog. If your dog does growl you should discourage him by saying “No” and making it clear that growling is unacceptable behavior.

3. A few sessions with a dog trainer are a good idea

Even if your Boston Terrier is well behaved; a dog trainer can reassure you all that your dog is aware of the boundaries in your family.

4. The puppy may not bite the children – even playfully.

Teething puppies are no problem; their gentle little bites don’t hurt now – but they will when your dog gets teeth! Rather encourage a policy of “no bite”. Offer toys and other appropriate outlets for the play bites.

5. Make the boundaries clear

As with any dog – boundaries are the key. Your puppy should not be allowed to roam the house freely until he is properly housetrained. This is a fun process in which you can involve the children. The puppy will need to be taken out every time he needs to go and the children will benefit from taking them outside and waiting until they have done their business.

Following these tips should assure you of a family friendly Boston Terrier.

Having a dog in the house, particularly a Boston Terrier – can be a wonderful positive experience for your children too. Your children will learn many valuable life skills from their dog. They benefit by learning the value of respect. They learn responsibility (children should be encouraged to take part in caring for the dog too). In addition they will learn patience, kindness and compassion. Your dog will develop a special relationship with your children. Boston Terriers are generally content to be played with. If socialized correctly they are tolerant and will even allow the kids to play dress up with them.

Living With Pets – Keeping Your Carpet Clean

We love our pets and treat them as members of the family. But why should we sacrifice the beauty of our carpeting just because we own cats and dogs? With pet ownership comes the headaches of shedding fur, dander, odor and accidental urine or waste stains. Carrying out some routine cleaning techniques will help keep your carpet or rug looking good despite the issues that come with pet ownership.

One of the most reported problems with having a pet is the amount of hair and fur that is shed and embedded into carpet fibers and upholstered furniture. While you can’t stop your dog or cat from shedding, you can take some preventative steps to make sure the excess hair doesn’t find its way into your rug. Make sure you brush your pet on a regular basis. Some pets, depending on the breed, shed more often and with a larger amount of hair. However, even shorthaired pets will shed, so be certain you are brushing them often as well. You should brush your pet outside or in an area with bare floors for easy cleanup.

While brushing will certainly diminish the amount of hair that gets embedded in your carpet, you cannot completely stop the fur from shedding. You’ll notice the area with the most amount of shed hair will be in that area, so you can concentrate on cleaning and vacuuming in that specific spot instead of being overwhelmed with a room full of pet hair.

Not only can these strong vacuums suck up hair, they also pick up the dirt and dander that can get embedded into your carpet pile. You’ll notice the most heavily traveled areas in a carpeted room – both by humans and pets – will become dirty and trampled more quickly. A good quality vacuum will make sure you’re lifting the excess dirt, dust and dander from these heavily soiled areas.

Even well trained dogs and cats will eventually have accidents. The odors and stains that are associated with pet urine and waste can cause irreversible damage to your carpet. A good way to combat the odors and stains is by purchasing a enzyme cleaner designed to neutralize the acids and ammonia found in pet waste. Try to get to soiled spot quickly, soak up (dab the spot, do not rub) the excess with paper towels then use the enzyme cleaner as instructed on the bottle. Appearance-They are beautiful in color which in nature is usually a brilliant green, not unlike the color of new spring grass, with blue feathers and light grey on their face and chest. They average about 12 inches from beak to tail, and look very similar to a parakeet with a heavier body build.

Personality-Known for their sweet and gentle ways, particularly if they have been hand fed from an early age, they make a great addition to the family. Most will eat pellets, seeds, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables (organic is best), pasta, grains, legumes, and seeds (sprouted seeds are the most nutritious). Avoid chocolate, caffeine, avocado, rhubarb, and alcohol as all are toxic to birds.

Physical Requirements-Quakers need space to be active both inside and out of the cage. Provide a high quality cage that is spacious, easy to clean and it will probably last for your bird’s entire life. Setting up a play area outside of the cage with toys, perches, and swings will help keep you bird physically fit, and emotionally balanced as well. Plan to allow your bird several hours, more if possible, outside the cage daily.

Life Span-If you are looking for a companion for life, you’ll have a friend in this little bird as it often lives 20 to 30 years. These birds are illegal in some parts of the United States, so make sure you check your locality before purchasing one, and before moving to another part of the country with one.

General Health-Generally considered as quite hardy, these birds can also adapt well to changes in climate. They are still susceptible to diseases that are spread through airborne viruses. Maxi-Pet 31817K Tragetasche groß (50 x 30 x 22cm) Zweckmässig, aber in zweierlei Hinsicht bedenklich – B. Domagalski –
Hab mir diese Tasche für kurze Transporte gekauft. Von der Idee her ist die Tasche super. Reisverschlüsse an der Seite und zusätzlich oben zum “bepacken”. Das Gitternetz ist stabil und sehr großzügig verteilt.

Das Problem und die Gründe für 2 Sterne:

1. Der Trageriemen bzw. dessen Haken sind extremst billig verarbeitet und wohl auch aus irgendeinem Billig-Gussmetall. Kaum ein Tierhalter wird es reskieren, seinen Liebling fallen zu lassen, wenn das Teil bricht.
2. Die Tasche stinkt auf’s extremste. Da muss ein Haufen weichmacher enthalten sein, diese sind ja bekanntlich Krebserregend.

Der eine Stern ist für das kompakte Design, gefaltet ist die Tasche winzig und für einen Notfall kann man sie im Keller aufheben. Ansonsten find ich die Tasche sehr bedenklich.

Die Tasche finde ich optisch sehr schön und auch stabil. Wurde auch schon eingesetzt und hat die Erwartungen sogar mehr als erfüllt.

Leider musste ich darauf ca. 1 Monat warten, wurde ständig vertröstet und hatte auch nicht wirklich den Eindruck, dass man dies wirklich bedauert.

Bin gespannt, ob ich die Gutschrift, die mir versprochen wurde, auch wirklich erhalte. Wäre nach dem Ärger mit der liefernden Firma eigentlich das Mindeste. Ehrlich gesagt rechne ich aber nicht damit. Bin sowas über Amazon auch nicht gewohnt

Traveling With Your Pets Adds Joy to Your Trip

Do you travel with your pets? How I love camping trips with my animals! We just returned from hiking explorations of the Wind River Range, the Teton Mountains and the Gros Ventre Range. Cinnamon, our cat, and Maddie, our dog, travel with us. Maddie is sooo energetic. Those few people we passed on the trails would comment on her energy and joy.

“Now that dog has some hunt in her!” commented one man as Maddie flew back and forth across the grassy meadow. Well, we aren’t hunters, but I’m sure Maddie wouldn’t mind at all if we were. Watching her run and do her own form of hunting is a thing of beauty to watch and brings smiles to our faces. This is a picture of Maddie and me at the top of Coal Creek — Mesquite Divide with the back of Grand Teton in background.

My nephew, Brad and his fiance, Lauren, traveled from Boise, Idaho to meet us in the Wyoming Wind River Range before Tom, my husband and I rolled further north in Wyoming. Of course, Brad brought his black lab, Drake and Lauren brought her dog, Moose. You see Drake here with Maddie enjoying his daily hot dog treat from me at our campsite. It was an adventure in itself getting 4 humans, 2 large black labs, a Shiatsu, and a cat in one small camper for dinner!

And who says small dogs can’t do long hikes with the big dogs? Here is Lauren’s solution to Moose’s tired little legs, but that didn’t stop him from traveling up Green River Lakes trail with the rest of us!

My favorite has to be my 16 year old cat, Cinnamon, who gets braver each year. Here you see her looking out the truck window in Pinedale, Wyoming, a first for her since she began traveling with us at age 12. She used to hide in her litter box in the back seat during all stops. Who says an old kitty can’t learn to have new adventures?

I wouldn’t miss these trips with my special animals. Now I know why so many people travel in campers and RV’s, because most of them have at least one animal, usually a dog, along for the ride. It costs less, too. You don’t have to pay a kennel or a pet sitter to care for them while you are gone. You get the added joy of their presence while you are on vacation, and you don’t have to worry about them while you are gone with them right under your nose.

Heartworm Disease In Domestic Pets

Heartworm, scientifically known as Dirofilaria immitis, is a parasitic roundworm that is now considered as a global pest that primarily affects dogs and cats. Prevalence of heartworm exists in every continent except Antartic and Arctic regions.

Microfilariae are the infectious particles of the nematode that are present in the salivary glands of a mosquito and are transmitted from organism to organism during mosquito bites. Around 70 different species of mosquitoes are known to act as stable vectors for this disease. Mosquitoes provide the ideal body temperature required for the growth of microfilariae. Infection starts when these microfilariae enter the blood stream and mature. Adult heartworms reside inside the compartments of the heart and large blood vessels inside lungs. There are five distinct larval stages in the life cycle of heartworm.

Symptoms of this disease appear only when the disease has reached an advanced stage. Symptoms at this stage include dyspnea, coughing, enlarged abdomen and inflammation in the lungs, restricted blood flow, syncape, dizziness, loss of appetite, hepatomegaly and abnormal lung sounds. When the disease is left unattended, it can result in death within 72 hrs due to congestive heart failure.

Diagnosis of the disease is done using different types of blood tests. Some tests such as filter test and Knotts test look for the presence of microfilaria inside the blood sample. Occult test locates the presence of adult heartworms in the heart. Another type of diagnostic test is done for detecting the presence of heartworm specific antigens. Third type of diagnostic test is aimed at detecting the presence of antibodies to the larval stage of heartworm.

Treatment of heartworms is effective only when the disease is detected early. There are several drugs available in the market for treating heartworms. Most important of these include Immiticide, Ivermectin and Caparsolate. Some other important preventive drugs for heartworm infection include Moxidectin, Milbmycin and Selamectin. However, all these drugs are powerful chemical combinations that are highly toxic to the animal as well as the parasite and must be administered with utmost precaution. Another useful treatment option is surgical removal in advanced cases where substantial numbers of adult heartworms have infested the heart.
