I have been reviewing all different types of baby carriers and love my Maya wrap. I carry my 22 pound one year old on my hip in it and was looking for something more substantial to support him on my hip- after reading reviews I purchased this and when it arrived it was just what I was looking for! I put it on and it looked great and the straps are SOOO long!!! I am 5’10 and a size 18w- so I was expecting this to be small, but it was not at all! Then before we left the house for the day I decided to give it a test run with my baby in it before we left and I am so glad I did! As soon as I placed him in it- I hated it! It made him sit so low that it was very uncomfortable. Then I tried to put the straps around my waist line instead of my hips and the straps had to be so tight around to keep him up that it was very uncomfortable! The shoulder strap was also very little. Would be good for someone who has a little shoulder and a VERY tall toddler. still on the hunt for that perfect carrier…..
I was looking for a carrier that would allow close contact with my daughter, but would also offer a good amount of support so I wouldn’t feel it in my back or shoulders. The Mei Hip definitely suited that purpose. I was able to keep her close to me, and most of the weight was distributed on my hip, not my back or my shoulders. She also didn’t seem to mind being in the carrier. I also have a Kelty Kangaroo, which she pretty much hates. The only drawback is that she does ride rather low in the carrier, and when she gets tired, she slouches even more. This causes her cheek to rub on the carrier, which caused a heat rash. I had really high hopes for this product as the Baby Bjorn I was using was killing me since my baby is over 22lbs! The design was lovely (I got the Helsinki) but the product just did not feel comfortable on me. I even had a tingling muscle sensation on my shoulder after placing my baby in it for 15 mins. Also, the baby couldn’t sit still, I think she did not feel as comfortable as she did on the bjorn.

I think it would be great for infants but for a baby who’s reached over 20lbs, probably a different carrier would work out better.
we have a 9 month old, and she already weighs 23lbs. so finding the right sling for her age and my comfort was not easy. we own 4 other slings and this, our 5th one, is the best! with my baby on my hip it’s comfortable for me and she can see the world (unlike being on my back with other carriers. the design of the ella roo is simple, beautiful and not bulky, and extremely functional. oh joy! Ellaroo Mei Hip Baby Carrier – Osaka I’ve been using this carrier for about three months with my son who is now 6 months old and weighs about 16 pounds.

The best features of this carrier are:
- the hip is the perfect position for a baby 4-6 months old, because it lets him see what you’re doing and be involved, but places his increasing weight on your hip. Much more comfortable than a sling for long periods of time, and okay for a child who can’t yet sit up on his own.
- it’s very trim and can be easily stuffed into a diaper bag.
- very easy to put on (no adjusting, just click and go).

Room for improvement:
- the straps are almost IMPOSSIBLE to thread through the buckles. Take the time to get it just right when you receive it, and then never do it again!!! Because of this, it would be really hard for this carrier to be shared between two parents of different size.
- The body is very wide for a smaller baby. It would be great if there were elastic or a drawstring feature in the bottom of the body to narrow it for smaller babies. When my son was smaller, he would kind of slump forward because the body was bunched up around his tiny legs and he couldn’t let them hang down out of the carrier.
- The straps are not padded (which make it very packable, but it can definitely get tiring on the shoulder after a while… my right shoulder often feels a bit pins and needley after wearing for a long time).
- It could use a POCKET!!

Note about the fabric: It is very stiff when you buy it, but after one wash it softened up significantly.

I would definitely recommend this carrier for older babies and toddlers who either aren’t ready to be worn on the back (for this I HIGHLY recommend the Ergo), or when you want to wear them in a way that lets them see what you’re doing and be involved.
