CREEPY CRAWLIES!!! ONE OF THE BEST INSECT HORROR BOOKS I’VE READ!!! – Travis Deputy – Padukee, Keentukee
I’ve never read a killer insect book quite like Vespa. I guess that’s because I’ve never read a fiction book dealing with this type of creature. What type of insect is causing mayhem in this book you ask? Well, I won’t tell you exactly to hopefully leave some surprise for you, though you’ll guess what it is early on in reading the book or one of the other reviewers may have mentioned it. This is an insect I have a great fear of. In the summer time they’re always flying around my house and THEY STING! Thank goodness I’m not allergic to them. I guess that narrows it down to 2 insect choices for people that live in the U.S.
I won’t go into the plot and not because it’s the greatest in the world and I don’t want to spoil anything for you; far from it. What makes this book so great are the descriptions of the insect in question. Not just it either, but it’s larval stage. Those little things freaked me out like no ones business. Also, what keeps this book from staying out of mediocrity is all the very cool information the author provides, which I’m guessing is factual, about the insects. Very interesting stuff! The insect in it’s adult stage is completely creepy. Something very intelligent and as long as your arm with a 6 inch stinger coming after you… Yikes!
The characterization definitely could have been better, but it’s no slouch either. In other words, it gets the job done. No, this novel won’t win any awards, but it is a super fun and creepy ride(albeit short ride at 185 pages). There’s not many writers pumping insect horror books nowadays. There sure was back in the 1970′s and 80′s. Some of them were classics like Blight, Came A Spider, Webs, etc. etc. I think one of the best things about Vespa, that I almost forgot to mention, is the sci-fi overtones it takes on in the latter part of the book. Remember an old 1980′s horror movie called Night Of The Creeps? Think along those lines with those larval things I mentioned and you’ll be headed in the right direction.
Dean Lombardo can write. There’s no question about that. But he’s still at the amatuer stage and with some honing he could be a high caliber writer. If this book had not creeped and scared the pants off of me I would have given it 3 stars due to the plot being mostly forgettable, shallow characterizations, at times corny dialogue and too short in length. However, any book that can make me squirm is going to get kudos points. As it stands I give it 3.75 stars out of 5. A mostly above average book that I think most people will have a fun time with and be scared while doing it. I would definitely like to see more horror fiction from Dean Lombardo. Check out Vespa!
A little tidbit: Anyone that can speak or knows enough Spanish will know what Vespa means/is because… well, Vespa is Spanish…. and that will tell you what the insect in question is if you are really curious.
