I've got a load of bike parts, many of them are identical, like 50 Campagnolo chainrings for example.
I need to set up an item to sell repeatedly at a set price for the whole quantity, without doing auctions, and with a flat shipping price to the US.
I'm thinking eBay is the best way to do this. I'm wondering what tips people might have for getting this accomplished, and perhaps any resources for learning to do this effectively.
My concept is that I should get an online store, not just a regular user account on eBay to do this the best way.
As anyone who has ever taken on the role of Guybrush Threepwood, the swashbuckling wannabe pirate from the Monkey Island series, will tell you – 2D point and click games are engaging and funny. For anyone late to the party or simply still stuck in the 90s there’s SCUMMVM.
SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Manic Mansion. It was brought to life by Lucas Arts as a platform for 2D point-and-click adventures and used for many highly acclaimed titles such as the aforementioned The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max Hit the Road. SCUMMVM is a video game emulator which provides a platform on which to play these classics – on nearly any system you can name.
The Basics
The virtual machine (which makes up the VM in SCUMMVM) comes in over 40 different flavours including the obvious modern Windows, Linux and Mac versions. For gamers on the go there’s an iPhone package as well as Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Symbian OS and Windows CE editions.
It doesn’t stop there however, and the developers have gone to great lengths to get the platform working on a homebrewed Nintendo Wii, GameCube and N64 as well as the Dreamcast and Amiga OS. Put it this way – if you own a fancy Samsung TV then there’s even a version for that. I’m serious.
I’m using SCUMMVM on Windows, but the process involved in getting your 2D adventures working is the same on any platform. You can download and install any of the versions from the official downloads page. Once you’ve fired up the video game emulator you will be presented with a list of games you have available and a couple of options. As you’ve not installed any games, the list will at first be empty.
Within the Options panel you can tweak graphics and audio settings, as well as MIDI emulation and theme settings. SCUMMVM can be run in full-screen or windowed mode (if you’re trying to work), and has a handy “Aspect Ratio Correction” option for widescreen users.
Available Games
There are eight titles available for download from the SCUMMVM website which have been made available as freeware by their respective publishers. Quality free titles include Flight of the Amazon Queen which sees you stranded in the Amazon rainforest and the devilish Beneath a Steel Sky in which your character can die in the very first room.
All are available from the downloads page here.
SCUMMVM also includes support for many more adventure games, though in order to play these you are going to need an official copy of the game. eBay is a great place to find old games at bargain prices and once you’ve got your hands on a copy head over to the SCUMMVM game data file list to see what files you need to extract and play. MS-DOS and unsupported Windows versions make perfect candidates, simply copy and paste the relevant files to a new directory and point SCUMMVM to it.
Playing Games
Playing games is quick and easy once you’ve added them to the list of installed titles. Folders containing game data files must be added one by one, using the Add Game button.
Navigate your way to the folder containing your game data files and click Choose. If everything’s in order, SCUMM will pop-up a window like this:
Settings for your particular version will be automatically detected and added to the fields above, click OK to add the game to the list. Once a game has been added it will remain in the list until you remove it. You can now select a game and click Start to begin exploring some surprisingly engrossing 2D worlds.
Conclusion
SCUMMVM sits alongside DOSBox as one of those well-intended freeware applications everyone loves. The simple interface means you’ll be up and running in no time – even on your mobile device. The free games alone will keep you busy for hours, and it’s easy to copy the files you need from game CDs or floppies. The developers have provided everything you need to get started on some funny adventure games.
Have you tried a version of the SCUMMVM video game emulator? If you have any tips or favourite games, let us know in the comments.
Just when you thought you had looked everywhere – and failed miserably – to distinguish yourself from the rest of the gang down at your favorite biker bar, the crew at Parker Brothers Choppers has come up with just the bike to, shall we say, kick it up a notch. Ah, yes… a Lightcycle should do the trick just fine. After clicking the the eBay Motors Buy It Now button and placing a “nominal” $500 deposit, all you have do is come up with the other $34,500 and let the fun begin.
According to the listing, Parker Brothers allows for further Lightcycle individuality by adding a neon accent color of red, blue, yellow, green or orange to the black bike. The colored LEDs will shine through clear panels, adding to the whole deadly streak motif of the Lightcycle. But if you really love orange, you better hurry, as only one color will be available for each of the five Lightcycles built. Seem a little frivolous? Not to worry, the ad assures us that “the Lightcycle is being built for everyday use” and will be complete with a certificate of origin and a unique VIN number ending in one through five.
Now, once you've chosen your powerplant, you're almost ready for battle. The two available choices include a high-powered gasoline engine or, for all you cutting edge conservationists out there, a high performance electric motor. No official power figures are available in the listing, just the promise of “high performance.” Wow… just bring your personalized TRON plates, and as long as you don't have to make any turns…. ever… this thing promises to be more fun that a barrel of monkeys.
We have a feeling the 22×12-inch wheels will make catching the inside line of your favorite long sweeper a bit of a challenge, but don't worry: the included non-DOT-approved Tron helmet should keep you out of harm's way when shooting off the road! We were almost temped to hit the button and get our own, but the staff simply could not decide between the green or blue accents, so we scrapped it. That means there is still one available for you… and we'll be sure to make way if we see you coming towards us! Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Ebay a Story
I caught my first glimpse Arne Norell's Sirocco chair in a New York Times article, and thought that it was exactly what my living room was missing, but after some research I realized that at a price of at least $1,000 from antique dealers, it was way more than I could afford. But I kept my eyes open and my fingers crossed. When I saw the chair on AT Scavenger for $225 I thought it would be worth trying to have it shipped — even if it was a cheap reproduction or not in perfect condition, the price was reasonable enough that I'd have no regrets.
Shipping on Greyhound is relatively inexpensive for large items compared to regular shipping. The catch is that you need to drop off and pick up the furniture at the nearest Greyhound station — they don't deliver door-to-door. I had a friend in San Francisco pick up the chair from the craigslist seller and ship it for me which was a huge help and everything went without a hitch.
Here are a few things that I learned from my craigslist Greyhound shipping experience:
Do Your Research
Buying anything from craigslist sight unseen is risky business so make sure to ask the seller for large images so you can see as much detail as possible. Research the piece as much as you can to make sure it's worth the price (don't forget to account for shipping, see below). You'll probably need to rely on your gut to make this decision. I knew my chair was missing the leather seat cushion that perfect specimens have and there was no way for me to know if it was in great condition or even original, but I knew I'd like the way it looked despite these things so I went for it.
Account for Shipping
You can estimate Greyhound's shipping costs at their website, www.shipgreyhound.com, if you know the furniture's dimensions and weight. They do have size and weight limits so make sure to check before you buy. Don't forget to factor in the cost of packing supplies. My chair cost $60 to ship and the supplies were another $60, doubling the price. Adding the cost of shipping, make sure that your find is still worth the price.
Rely on the Kindness of Friends (and Strangers)
Having a generous friend in San Francisco who was willing to pick up and ship the chair was a huge help. If you don't have anyone in the same location as the furniture to give you a hand, you can negotiate with the seller and see if they will ship it for you. That's always a risk so just make sure that you'll be okay if something goes wrong.
Be Patient
Greyhound's website estimates the time to ship, but don't rely on that. The website told me it would take 3 days, but when I called they said it could take up to 10 days — it ended up taking exactly a week. I had a tracking number, but I couldn't track the chair online because we hadn't paid online and the process for doing that was not self-explanatory.
In the end the chair arrived with a small tear in the back of the seat that I'm hoping can be repaired easily, but other than that the condition is good and it's totally comfortable so to me it was definitely worth the trouble. Have you ever shipped furniture on Greyhound? What was your experience like?

iPhone apps that will help you get through conference season. For the small business owner or entrepreneur, springtime often equates to conference season. From booking flights and accommodations, to finding out what's going on in the local area, there are plenty of apps that will ease your stress, Mashable reports. For the procrastinating businessperson, Priceline's Hotel Negotiator app is free, and will allow you to find last-minute hotel deals within a radius of your current location. Also free of cost, the Free Wi-Fi Finder app will use your location to find local spots that offer free Wi-Fi access, with the ability to filter results by types of location, such as cafes and hotels. Another great freebie app is beamME pro, which allows you to e-mail, text or tweet all of your contact information instantly – perfect for staying connected with fellow conference-goers, especially if you neglected to bring enough business cards.
Online ads that adjust to you. We've written before about the slightly creepy but cool trend in online advertising that is behavioral targeting, which allows websites to display ads to customers who, for instance, abandon their shopping carts. Now, Stephanie Clifford of the New York Times looks at something new: a start-up that allows companies to buy and customize online advertisements in a matter of milliseconds. The company, AppNexus, uses information collected about a given web user's purchasing and search history to make real-time decisions about which ads will perform best. Clifford reports that eBay is trying the system out, and that it's returning three times as much money as it costs. “Previously eBay had to buy a block of ads from a network or exchange, and when someone it recognized showed up, they could partially customize the ad,” she writes. “Now, customers are offered one by one, and eBay–using AppNexus's automated system–only bids on the ones it thinks are worthwhile.”
Did Mark Zuckerberg commit a felony? Last week, Business Insider broke the story (supported by more than a dozen sources) that early in Facebook's history, Mark Zuckerberg, then a 19-year-old Harvard student, used Facebook members's information to break into their private e-mail accounts, hack a competitor's site, and alter users profiles. Now, BI has interviewed privacy lawyers who say those actions from 2004 could be considered felonies under state and Federal law. It's a troubling development for a company that has access to the private data of some 400 million people.
How to advertise green products legally. It's no secret that making your product a little more green can also add some green to your profits. But it's important to make environmentally claims legally. The Federal Trade Commission has already gone after Kmart, Tender Corp., and Dyna-E international for making false claims of “biodegradability.” There have also been class-action law suites against companies like S.C. Johnson & Son, which added its own “Greenlist” seal to its Windex products that misled consumers into believing that a third party had certified the product independently. The FTC has a guide for the use of environmental marketing claims. An updated version is expected later this year, but in the meantime smart marketers should follow these tips from Advertising Age to avoid dishonest labeling.
Foursquare grows by leaps and bounds. Foursquare, the location-based social network/game just celebrated it's first birthday and it has been experiencing wild growth for the occasion. The site surpassed its own record of 275,000 check-ins in a day. TechCrunch contextualizes this milestone, explaining that the company had 1.2 million check-ins in a week just a month ago and half as many a month before that. Both Foursquare and it's top competitor, Gowalla, are gearing up for SXSW and TechCrunch writes that “both are absolutely on fire right now and could go nuclear this weekend.” So stop procrastinating and get your business on Foursquare.
Homes of the next big things. Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal and VentureSource teamed up to identify the top 50 venture-backed companies with the best chance to become “the next big thing”–a list that included HomeAway, Fusion-io, and Etsy. This morning, The Journal took a look at where these companies are located. Not surprisingly, just about half call Silicon Valley home. But New York City was well-represented, too.
